Razzaq to join Afridi, Mendis for Hampshire Hawks

London, Mar 8(ANI): England’s reigning Twenty20 champions Hampshire Hawks have signed Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who will be joining his national team-mate Shahid Afridi at the Rose Bowl.

Razzaq is an integral part of Pakistan”s one-day and Twenty20 squads and is considered especially vital in the Twenty20 team, where his all-round skills make him an important asset to the squad.

Hampshire will be hoping that the 30-year-old and Afridi can provide the big hitting firepower they will need to retain their title, as the Friends Provident Trophy kicks off in June, Cricistan reports.

With the arrival of Razzaq to partner Afridi and Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, the Hawks have raised the bar to unprecedented heights.

Afridi and Mendis were two of the top wicket takers in the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup and Hampshire will be hoping that the spin twins will choke the life out of the Hawk”s opposition.

Razzaq had earlier played at the English county level for Middlesex, Worcestershire and Surrey. He joined Surrey in June 2008 on a short-term contract to play in the Twenty20 tournament. (ANI)

New Zealand Cricket appoints Saqlain Mushtaq as spin consultant

Wellington, Aug. 9 (ANI): Former Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq has been appointed as spin consultant for New Zealand Cricket (NZC) for the next 12 months.

Saqlain’s first assignment will be New Zealand’s six-week tour of Sri Lanka.

“NZC has an agreement with Saqlain Mushtaq who will work with the Black Caps over the next 12 months,” the Daily Times quoted Stephen Hill, as saying.

“His experience as a spin bowler is considered to be of significant assistance. He will be working with both our bowlers and batsmen, usually for a few days at a time during the team’s international series over that period,” Hill added.

Saqlain initially worked with the team at a training session in Derby, during the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, helping the team in preparation for its league game against Sri Lanka.

“He (New Zealand coach Andy Moles) wanted me to help the batsmen play spinners like Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis,” Saqlain told a website in London, before taking off to Sri Lanka.

He also had a chat with Daniel Vettori and the other spinners on spin bowling, and discussed the thought process and preparation a spinner goes through.

Saqlain played his last Test for Pakistan in 2004, and was pushed out of contention once the selectors favoured the all-round skills of Shoaib Malik.

He said the main reason he was brought on board was to help New Zealand counter the danger posed by Muralitharan and Mendis.

“I watched the New Zealand batsmen in the nets and told them where exactly they committed the mistake. They were not picking the ball at the point of release.

“So I bowled them some doosras and asked to watch my hand while I bowled with tennis balls to make them understand how the ball would behave if someone like Mendis bowled it.”

Saqlain plans to bolster the New Zealand spin attack since he believes slow bowlers will be a dominant force on the slower and flatter pitches in Sri Lanka. (ANI)

We want to start the series on a winning note : Younis Khan

Galle (Sri Lanka), July 4 (ANI): As Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first in the first Test of the three match series here on Saturday, captain Younis Khan expressed the hope that he would like to start the series on a winning note.

Khan said his batsmen would have no problem countering ‘mystery’ bowler Ajantha Mendis.

“We have a lot of off spinners, left-arm spinners and leg spinners. The wickets are similar to Pakistan. Both teams know each other’s weaknesses. Because of our nature we compete with each other very well,” Khan said ahead of the first Test.

He said Pakistan is going into the Test with a positive frame of mind and would play three fast bowlers.

With Muttiah Muralitharan ruled out due to a leg injury, Khan said he would be missing Murali on the field.

“The last series I played against Murali, I pulled my hamstring stretching all the way trying to play him for two days. He is a fantastic bowler. Whenever Murali is under pressure, he talks to you,” The News quoted Khan, as saying. (ANI)

Meanwhile, rookie pacer Mohammed Aamer provided Pakistan a flying start here as he grabbed two wickets to provide his team with an early advantage.

Aamer removed both openers, Warnapura and Kumara Sangakkara with his fast swinging deliveries.

Sri Lanka were 72 for 2 when reports last came in. (ANI)

Fitness, prime importance during Sri Lanka tour : Alam

Lahore, June 28 (ANI): Pakistan cricket coach Intikhab Alam has said that the fitness of the players would be of prime importance during the Sri Lanka tour.

Talking to media persons before leaving for Sri Lanka, Alam highlighted that the players must be more than 100 percent fit to cope -up with difficult weather conditions in the island nation.

“Sri Lanka will be hot and in such a climate your fitness is tested, so we have put a stress on fitness, which will play an important role,” The Dawn quoted Alam, as saying.

Alam expressed hope that Pakistan batsmen would tackle the world-class spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis efficiently.

“Sri Lanka have quality spinners in Muralitharan and Mendis, but our batting is good and I hope it will be up to the challenge of playing in the heat and against two world-class spinners,” he said.

Pakistan team has been bolstered by the return of middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf, and all rounder Abdul Razzaq, both of whom have terminated their respective contracts with the rebel Indian Cricket League, (ICL).

Yousuf vowed to give his best during the series, and said that he wanted to return to the international cricket in a ‘memorable manner.’

“It will be tough because when you play international cricket after a big gap its difficult, but I will do my best to play my part in the team’s win against Sri Lanka, who are a very tough team on their home grounds,” said Yousuf. (ANI)

Yousuf certain to make comeback in Pak cricket team

Lahore, May 22 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to include Mohammad Yousuf in the national squad for the forthcoming Sri Lankan tour.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt described Yousuf as a valuable player who was needed in the team.

“Yousuf has told us that he has resigned from the ICL and we have formed a committee to look into cases of the players who played in the ICL. Situation would become clear in a few days. There is no doubt that Yousuf is required in the Pakistan team,” The Nation quoted Butt, as saying.

Earlier, the PCB had asked the middle order batsman to table the ICL’s response over his decision to quit the rebel league.

Yousuf’s return to the team would certainly bolster its batting line-up for the forthcoming three Test match series against Sri Lanka.

The PCB is particularly worried about Sri Lanka’s world-class spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis besides its more than decent pace attack.

Pakistan lacks bothdepth and experience in their batting order.Besides captain Younis Khan, and former captain Shoaib Malik, the line up is in experienced. (ANI)

PCB asks Yousuf to obtain ICL’s response over his resignation

Lahore, May 21 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has asked middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf to table the ICL’s response over his decision to quit the rebel league.

Yousuf met PCB officials Wasim Bari, Mohammad Naeem and Zakir Khan to convey to them that he has terminated his contract with the Indian Cricket League (ICL), and is now available to play for the national team.

“We met Mohammad Yousuf and he told us he wants to play for Pakistan and that he has resigned from the ICL.He showed us the resignation letter. We have asked him to come back to us with their response, whatever that is,” The Daily Times quoted Bari, as saying.

Bari said the PCB would decide about Yousuf’s inclusion in the team only after it gets a response from the ICL.

“Once we have something from them, we can move forward. We have to take it step-by-step,” he said.

According to sources, the PCB is mulling recalling Yousuf in the national team to bolster its batting line-up for the forthcoming three Test match series against Sri Lanka.

The PCB is particularly worried about Sri Lanka’s world-class spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis beside a decent pace attack.

Pakistan lacks depth and experience in their batting order and besides captain Younis Khan the middle order has no other experienced batsman in the line up.

Yousuf had already expressed his desire to make a come back in the national squad, saying playing for country was always his priority. (ANI)

Yousuf may be recalled for Sri Lanka series

Lahore, May 20 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may ‘pardon’ middle order batsman Mohammad Yousuf for siding with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) and include him in the national squad that will do duty in the forthcoming Test tour of Sri Lanka.

According to the sources, the PCB is mulling recalling Yousuf in the national team to bolster its batting line-up for the three Test match series.

“The final decision on Yousuf’s induction will be taken by PCB chairman Ijaz Butt on his return from India,” The Daily Times quoted a PCB source, as saying.

Yousuf had already expressed his desire to play for the national team.

“I am available to play for Pakistan which has always been my priority. I have resigned from the ICL and have spoken to captain Younis Khan on the matter,” Yousuf had said earlier.

Pakistan will play three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 international on its tour of Sri Lanka beginning June 27. (ANI)

Shah Rukh Khan hits back at Gavaskar for criticizing Buchanan

Mumbai, Apr 5 (ANI): Bollywood actor and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday slammed former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar for criticizing John Buchanan.

Buchanan, who is the manager of Kolkata Knight Riders, had suggested the four captain theory for the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“I have great respect for Gavaskar. I have grown up enjoying his performance. I respect him too much. I would like to say that please give the multiple-captain theory a breathing space to try now. If we fail we can always go back to the traditional way,” Khan said at a media conference here.

Gavaskar had recently criticised Buchanan’s theory saying too much importance is being accorded to the Australian, who is a failed first-class cricketer and is only trying to get lucrative jobs for his Queensland pals.

Shah Rukh also expressed hope that his team would perform much better than last year.

“All our players like Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Ishant Sharma, Mashrafe Mortaza are available,” he added. (ANI)

Kolkata Knight Riders bag Charl Langeveldt for IPL second season

Cape Town, Mar.28 (ANI): Former Proteas medium pacer Charl Langeveldt has joined the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to Sports24, Langeveldt has struck a deal with the Kolkata Knight Riders after his county team Derbyshire ‘reluctantly’ set him free to participate in the five week cricket extravaganza starting from April 18.

“I am pleased he has the opportunity to play alongside the world’s best in the IPL competition. We will undoubtedly miss a bowler of Charl’s experience and ability for the early part of the season,” Head of Cricket at Derbyshire, John Morris said.

Langeveldt would be joining the likes Ishant Sharma and Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis, making the Knight Riders bowling attack look ominous, and his immense control and command bowling at the end of innings in familiar conditions, would certainly provide an edge to John Buchannan’s team.

He would certainly prove more than an asset to the team, given the fact that the second season of the IPL has been shifted to South Africa.

Langeveldt has been in stupendous form recently. He played an important role in his team’s Standard Bank Pro20 tournament win.(ANI)

BCCI expresses shock over attack on Lankan cricketers in Pakistan

New Delhi, Mar. 3 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed shock over the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, claiming lack of security measures in Pakistan to be the main reason behind the mishap.

They have been taken to a hospital in the city.

“We have been saying that there was a lack of security and safety in Pakistan. But this is not the time to give statements on that. At the moment our concerns are only for the Sri Lankan players,” Srinivasan said.

In December 2008, India had called off its Pakistan tour in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks.

Later, Sri Lanka agreed to replace India and split their tour in two visits-playing the three-match one-day series in January followed by the two Tests.

Sri Lankan cricketers shot in Pakistan terror attack

Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack also left six security men and two civilians dead.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chief, said the Test has been called off. Salman Tasheer, the Punjab governor, said a helicopter will soon evacuate the Sri Lankan players from Gaddafi Stadium and take them to a nearby airbase from where the team will fly back to Sri Lanka. Duleep Mendis, the Sri Lanka Cricket chief, said that they were “getting the team back [to Sri Lanka] today”.

There have been terror strikes on the peripheries of cricket, but this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five armed terrorists near Liberty market. Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said 12 masked terrorists fired at the Sri Lankan team bus. The gunmen shot at the wheels of the bus and also injured the driver. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed.

“The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus,” Mahela Jayawardene told Cricinfo. “We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff], but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris.”

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, confirmed that the remainder of the tour had been cancelled. “We note with dismay and regret the events of this morning in Lahore and we condemn this attack without reservation.

“It is a source of great sadness that there have been a number of fatalities in this attack and it is also very upsetting for the wider cricket family that some of the Sri Lanka players and one match official have been injured in this attack. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with the injured people and also the families of those who have died.”

Television footage of several gunmen creeping through the trees, crouching to aim their kalashnikovs then running onto the next target were aired by Pakistan’s private channel Geo.

I don’t think they’ll stay back and play. I think they will come back as soon as possible. Depends on the injuries.”

Speaking on Geo TV, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, said: “This is the first time that a cricket team has been seriously targeted… Pakistan’s image will be hit and only time will tell how much damage has been done to Pakistan cricket. The World Cup too might be affected… no country would want to come now to Pakistan… I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad.”

The Indian cricket board, which called off a scheduled tour of Pakistan last December, expressed its sorrow over the attack. “We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured cricketers, and sympathise with their families and compatriots,” BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in New Delhi. “The BCCI stands alongside Sri Lanka Cricket in this hour of crisis.”

The Sri Lankan team had stepped in after the Indian government had barred the Indian team from touring Pakistan after the terror attack in Mumbai.

Pak skipper Younis Khan scores his first triple ton in Tests

Karachi, Feb.24 (ANI): Karachi’s National Stadium was set alight on Tuesday by fireworks from Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan’s bat. Taking full advantage of a dead pitch, Khan scored his maiden triple-century, and the third by a Pakistani batsman – to push the match towards an inevitable draw.

The only interest now left in the contest is whether Khan will try to break Brian Lara’s Test record of 400.

Khan brought up his triple ton with a reverse-sweep. Khan reached the landmark with 27 hits to the fence and four over the top.

The game lapsed into a farce in the last session with Sri Lankan cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene giving Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara and himself some overs.

Jayawardene picked up the wicket of Faisal Iqbal. Younis helped himself to easy boundaries in that phase and moved from 243 to his triple-hundred.

All of Sri Lanka’s bowlers toiled on the fourth day, including champion spinners Muthiah Murlitharan and Ajantha Mendis. They both got a wicket each. The pace bowlers-Chaminda Vaas and Dilhara Fernando couldn’t do much either.

In reply to Sri Lanka’s mamoth 644 for seven, Pakistan scored 574 for the loss of five wickets. Khan is batting on 306 and keeping him company is wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal on 23. (ANI)

Pak mulls ‘lively wicket’ to neutralise Lankan double ‘M’ menace

Karachi, Feb.18 (ANI): To counter Sri Lankan spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to prepare a ‘lively wicket’ to assist fast bowlers for the first Test match beginning here from February 21.

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has said the team management would prefer some ‘fresh grass’ on the National Stadium pitch

“It would be good to have a lively wicket with the ball coming to the bat properly. We would like to see some grass on the pitch so that the fast bowlers can get help from it,” The News quoted, Alam, as saying.

Pakistan which would be taking on the mighty Lankan spin attack with only one specialist spinner, leggie Danish Kaneria, also lacks experience in the fast bowling department with no Shoaib Akhtar or Mohammad Asif available for their services.

Alam expressed hope that the inexperienced pace attack would perform according to their capability during the series.

“We have some good fast bowlers like Umar Gul, Yasir Arafat and the uncapped Sohail Khan and Mohammad Talha. They have the potential to shine against the tourists,” he said.

Alam said his team was fully focused on its task, and would offer the islanders some stiff competition during the series under the new captain Younis Khan.

“No doubt it is a big challenge as Sri Lanka is a very good Test side. But we have the best possible team and all the boys are completely charged up which is why I’m confident it is going to be a good series,” Alam said. (ANI)

Sri Lankan cricket captain Jayawardene quits

Colombo, Feb.11 (ANI): Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene resigned from the post on Wednesday.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board sources said Jayawardene decided to quit the captaincy from both forms of cricket after the Test series against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka was handed a 4-1 drubbing by India in the recently concluded One-day series during which Jayawardene’s lacklusture performance was criticised by top cricket officials, The Colombo Times reports.

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Duleep Mendis said Jayawardene’s decision had been accepted and a new captain would be appointed for the one-day home series against Zimbabwe, which follows the Pakistan tour.

Jayawardene, who sat out Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 international against India on Tuesday, called for a meeting with the selectors on Wednesday morning and proposed that the time was right to hand over the captaincy, ensuring his successor had sufficient time to build the team for the 2011 World Cup. He was asked to reconsider but reiterated the time was right, given the heavy season ahead.

He then met Mendis and informed his teammates.

“This is something I have been considering for some time as it has been my long-held belief that my successor should have at least 18 months in the job to imprint his vision on the team for the 2011 World Cup,” Jayawardene said in a statement.

“I have concluded that the time has come for fresh leadership to takeover. It was not an easy decision to make because being the Sri Lanka captain has been the source of enormous pride. I hope to play a major part in the team’s success as a batsman,” he said.

Wicket-keeper batsman Kumar Sangakkara, who is vice-captain of the squad, is likely to replace Jayawardene.

Jayawardene was appointed ODI captain in 2004 and took over the Test captaincy from Marvan Atapattu in 2006.

One of his major achievements was taking Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup where it was defeated by Australia. In 2008, Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup defeating India in the final.

Jayawardene led the side in 94 one-day internationals, winning 54 and losing 35.

He led the Lankan squad in 26 Tests, winning 15 and losing seven.

Despite his recent poor form in, he remains a prolific run-getter in the longer version of the game averaging 64.70 as captain. (ANI)

Intikhab warns team against complacency in Sri Lanka Test series

Karachi, Feb.7 (ANI): Pakistan’s cricket coach Intikhab Alam has warned his players against any complacency during the forthcoming Test series with Sri Lanka, that might creep- up due to the islander team’s drubbing by India in the on-going ODI series.

Alam said that Test matches are different from one day games, and Sri Lanka was capable of turning it around with several world-class players in their squad.

“Test cricket is a different ball game altogether. You can’t predict the performance of a side in Test matches on the basis of its one-day showing, at least not Sri Lanka,” The News quoted Alam, as saying.

He added that though India has defeated Sri Lanka in all the four games quite comprehensively, the Lankan’s would be a different side altogether in the longer version of the game with the return of veteran left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas.

“Sri Lanka has two of the best spinners in the world, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, and with Vaas returning, their bowling attack will be very strong,” Alam said.

Referring to Pakistan’s lack of playing Test cricket, he asked the players to shift their game plan from the fifty over match to the five day game.

“Our first target would be to switch off the one-day mode and get into the Test mode,” Alam said.

Commenting on new skipperYounis Khan, Alam hoped that the team will perform cohesively under the new leader.

“Younis is a new captain and it would be good that he spends time with his players before the Tests. We would need a team effort to win the series and I’m confident that boys will gel behind Younis,” he added. (ANI)

Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations: Jayawardene

Karachi, Jan 19 (ANI): Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene has refused to single out spin sensation Ajantha Mendis as the major threat for Pakistan in the one-day series.

The 23-year-old Mendis and his more famous partner Muttiah Muralitharan are tipped to hold the aces against the home team in the three-match series, which starts here from Tuesday, The News reported.

But Jayawardene said Mendis doesn’t carry extra burden of expectations.

Mendis, who made his debut in the West Indies in May last year, became the fastest bowler to get 50 wickets, achieving the total in 19 matches, breaking Indian Ajit Agarkar’s record of 23 matches.

Jayawardene said he would not like to put extra pressure on the newcomer.

Jayawardene refused to agree Sri Lanka are struggling with their overall form after losing to Bangladesh in the last league match and scrapping to a narrow two-wicket win in the final of the tri-series in Dhaka last week.

Chasing a modest 153, Sri Lanka lost their first five wickets for a mere six runs — the lowest total at the fall of five wickets in any one-day international — before Muralitharan’s 16-ball 33 saw them home.

Jayawardene admitted Pakistan are a dangerous team.

“Pakistan is always Pakistan for me. They are a very tough side whether they play regularly or not, so we will have to put up the best effort,” said Jayawardene.

The second match is here on Wednesday, while the final match will be played in Lahore on Saturday. (ANI)
