Arvind Kejriwal to take loan to settle Rs 9.27 lakh I-T dues

NEW DELHI: Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal has decided to pay his dues to the income tax department in a bid to ensure that his application seeking voluntary retirement from the Indian Revenue Service ( IRS) is finally accepted.

The I-T department, where Kejriwal worked, has turned down his application, insisting he first clear the Rs 9.27 lakh he owes the department. “I have decided to pay the dues claimed by the I-T department. I will take a loan from a friend to pay the amount,” Kejriwal said.

While the issue had remained on the backburner for quite some time – with Kejriwal treating his association with the government to be over – the I-T department suddenly slapped a notice on him on August 6, asking him to pay up for his VRS application to be accepted.

The notice came just days before Gandhian Anna Hazare went on his hunger strike.

Northwest Pipe Appoints Richard A. Roman Chief Executive Officer; Brian W. Dunham Continues as President

Northwest Pipe Company (NASDAQ: NWPX) today announced that the Board of
Directors has accepted Brian Dunham’s resignation as Chief Executive
Officer, and appointed Richard A. Roman to serve as Chief Executive
Officer of the Company. Mr. Roman has been a member of the Company’s
Board of Directors since 2003, and remains on the Board. Mr. Dunham will
continue to serve as President and as a member of the Board of Directors.

Mr. Roman joins the Company from Columbia Ventures Corporation (CVC),
where he has been President since 2002. CVC is a private investment
company with significant holdings in the United States and Europe. During
more than 17 years at CVC, Mr. Roman has served in a variety of
capacities including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer.

Lahore, Sep.19 (ANI): Experienced Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq is disappointed over his non-selection for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Razzaq said he was surprised at not being selected.

RPI activists ransack Congress office in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 18(ANI): Activists of Republican Party of India (RPI), a regional party in Maharashtra, on Friday ransacked the Congress office in Mumbai.

The activists were protesting against eviction of their senior leader and former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Ramdas Athawale from his official bungalow in New Delhi.

Athawale was evicted for overstaying after he lost the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll.

RPI activists raised slogans against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and broke windowpanes of the party office.

“I was in office of NSUI (National Students Union of India) when I came to know that alleged workers of RPI are ransacking Congress office. I was surprised that policemen standing outside remained mere spectator even though I told them they are attacking our office,” said Sadaf Aboli, President of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), student wing of Congress.

According to reports, the police also arrested some of the activists. (ANI)

Election Commission issues notification for assembly elections in three states

New Delhi, Sep. 18 (ANI): The process for forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh will begin formally with the issuance of notification on Friday.

The prospective candidates would be able to file their nomination papers till September 25.

The prospective candidates can file nomination papers to the Returning Officer or to the Assistant Returning Officer from Friday till September 25.

The assembly elections in three states are expected to be a litmus test for all major parties after the Lok Sabha elections.

The vote-counting will take place on October 22.

It is notable that all the three states that are ruled by Congress, which shares power in Maharashtra with NCP as a major coalition partner.

Maharashtra has a 288-member Assembly, Haryana a 90-member House and Arunachal Pradesh Assembly has 60 members.

There are 2,061 polling stations in Arunachal Pradesh, 12,894 in Haryana and 82,028 in Maharashtra. (ANI)

Will Sarabjeet be spared the gallows under Pak Govt.’s plans to commute death sentences?

Islamabad, Sep.17 (ANI): The Pakistan government is considering commuting death sentences, but such a step may not help the cause of Sarabjeet Singh, the Indian inmate who has been awarded a death sentence by a Lahore anti-terrorism court in October 1991.

Interior Advisor Rehman Malik said the government has sent a draft to the law division seeking legal opinion on the proposal to commute death sentences.

Rehman, however, said that even if the proposal is accepted there would be no mercy for terrorists.

“They (terrorists) will have to face the death penalty,” The Dawn quoted Malik, as saying.

According to an estimate there are 7000 death inmates in Pakistan at present.

Pakistan security agencies have maintained that Singh had admitted that he was sent to Pakistan to carry out serial bomb blasts in Lahore, Faislabad, and Kasur, and was trained by the Indian Army, and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).

Singh was awarded the death sentence by a Lahore anti-terrorism court in October 1991.

He challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court, however, the apex court quashed his appeal in September, 2005, saying that the review petition was not filed within the time period as mentioned in the law.

In March 2006, a two member Supreme Court bench dismissed Singh’s petition against his conviction in the Lahore’s Yakki Gate bomb blast in 1990.

Singh has been languishing in Pakistan jails for the last 28 years, as Pakistan has stonewalled release even on humanitarian grounds, despite continuous efforts by Indian diplomatic channels. (ANI)

Planck spacecraft obtains first peek of big bang’s ‘afterglow’

London, September 18 (ANI): European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Planck spacecraft has obtained its first peek at the afterglow of the big bang, revealing it in unprecedented detail.

The ESA spacecraft was launched into space on May 14 this year. It is observing the glow of hot gas from just 380,000 years after the big bang, called the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

According to a report in New Scientist, the detailed properties of this background may contain hints of hidden extra dimensions or multiple universes, as well as providing clues to what caused a brief, early period of incredibly rapid cosmic expansion.

Planck began surveying the microwave background on August 13, a few weeks after reaching its planned perch 1.5 million kilometres from Earth at a point called L2 and cooling its detectors to within 0.1 degrees Celsius above absolute zero.

Now, the Planck team has released the probe’s first image, an observational strip covering about 5 per cent of the sky.

Slight variations in temperature from place to place in the early universe give the image its mottled appearance.

“With a few per cent of the data in, you can see it’s working well and delivering good stuff,” said team member George Efstathiou of the University of Cambridge.

Planck is expected to provide the most detailed all-sky map of the cosmic microwave background yet, improving on the best current map, obtained by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), which launched in 2001.

Planck’s detectors have more than 10 times the sensitivity of WMAP’s, and about 2.5 times the angular resolution.

“Every strip that Planck scans, we’re getting data that is many, many times more sensitive than WMAP,” Efstathiou told New Scientist.

Although Planck was only designed to observe the sky for 15 months, the team believes it could last for more than 30 months, based on new estimates of how long its coolant will last.

The extra time will allow Planck to measure the radiation with even greater precision, since it will scan the entire sky four times – two more than originally planned. (ANI)

MIC chief to apologise to Dr Mahathir over ‘slipper garland’ insult

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 18 (ANI): Malaysian Indian Congress president S. Samy Vellu has said that he will personally apologise to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the ‘slipper garland’ insult by a MIC member during the recent party congress.

He said he would seek an appointment with Dr Mahathir to tender his apology over the incident.

“I will meet him personally to explain the whole episode and extend my apology,” Samy Vellu said in a statement on Thursday.

The MIC chief said he and the MIC regretted the incident. “I have always had the highest respect for Tun Dr Mahathir. He is a great leader and a statesman.”

He said Dr Mahathir had brought tremendous development to the country and had united the people. “He will always be respected by us and all Malaysians,” The Star quoted Vellu, as saying.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir said he did not feel anything about the incident and added: “Nothing would have happened to me.”

Instead, he said he would have felt angry and saddened if Umno members had made such an insult.

“This is not the first time I have been insulted. People might have forgotten how Umno leaders had insulted me. Nazri (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nazri Abdul Aziz) and the previous mentri besar of Kedah wanted me expelled from Umno.

However, then no one gave any reaction. No one dared to say anything,” he said. (ANI)

Tibetans living-in-exile surprised over China’s opposition to Dalai Lama’s visit

Gangtok, Sep 17 (ANI): Members of the exiled Tibetan community living at Gangtok said China’s opposition to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh is “surprising”.

The Dalai Lama plans to visit Arunachal Pradesh soon. China has claimed part of Arunachal as its territory.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader’s aide said the Dalai Lama would be in Arunachal Pradesh state in the second week of November.

The intended visit has already sparked off controversy. China claims about 90,000 sq km of Arunachal Pradesh as part of its territory.

The Dalai Lama’s travel plan was announced a week after the completion of his visit to Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by Beijing. China denounced the trip.

“This time round when they (Chinese Authorities) are making some kind of pressure or some kind of opposition to the upcoming visit of his holiness to Arunachal Pradesh it is really very surprising.

Why would they complain when the government of India has no problem in his holiness visiting Arunachal Pradesh? So why should people of republic of china have some problem?” said Zimba Bhutia, Tibetan youth committee member.

“Chinese authorities have always been against the trip of Dalai Lama. So I think that they should know why Dalai Lama has been there. Dalai Lama has been welcomed by the people of Arunachal Pradesh as the spiritual and a Buddhist monk,” said Dhondup Dorjee, Tibetan welfare officer of Sikkim.

A visit to Arunachal Pradesh could now draw further attention to China’s treatment of Tibetan activists and the Dalai Lama’s calls for cultural and religious freedoms and autonomy. (ANI)

US folk singer Mary Travers passes away at 72

London, Sept 17 (ANI): Mary Travers, a member of the hugely popular 1960s US folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, has died in the US. She was 72.

Heather Lylis, the band’s publicist, said Travers passed away yesterday at the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She had battled leukemia for several years, reports The Times.

Travers joined forces with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey in the early 1960s. The trio formed the folk band Peter, Paul and Mary, mingling their music with liberal politics, both onstage and off.

Peter, Paul and Mary had hits including If I Had a Hammer, Lemon Tree and Puff, The Magic Dragon.

They won five Grammies and released a five-disc box set of their greatest hits, Carry It On.

They were strong supporters of the civil rights movement and opponents of the Vietnam War. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee hits out at Leftists

New Delhi, Sept 16 (ANI): Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee hailed the good showing of Trinamool Congress in civic polls in Darjeeling district as victory over state-sponsored terrorism.

In the 47-member district council, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress combine bagged 15 seats each. The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxists) won 17 seats.

“I think this is a victory of democracy against state-sponsored terrorism, the autocracy and every day they are making conspiracy against the United Progressive Alliance and the central government and the central ministers also. This is their habit. This fort was absolutely the red fort and you know how Darjeeling … it is a prestigious district. It is a very prestigious victory,” Banerjee told reporters in national capital New Delhi.

Banerjee also accused the State Government of not helping the Central Government’s efforts to curb Maoists.

“P. Chidambaram is very correct. He said he was trying his best but he was not getting any help from the State Government. When the Central Government is trying to do something, then the state police are giving information to the Maoists that the Central police are coming. They did not allow the Central police to come to the actual area where they exist,” said Banerjee.

Maoists have formally been labelled as a terrorist group by the Central Government. (ANI)

General strike curbs Manipur’s normal life

Imphal, Sep 12 (ANI): Normal life has been curbed in Manipur on Saturday due to a 24 hours general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) to protest against the alleged fake encounters.

The JAC is a group of NGOs, protesting the recent killing of a driver in an encounter.

The markets, shops, and business establishments in most parts of the state remained closed.

The transport services within the state and also with the neighboring states have been affected due to the strike.

A driver named Md Rehaman alias Tomba was killed along with five others, in an encounter with the security forces on September 8 at Awang Khul in Imphal West district.

The security forces maintain that the youths who were killed in the encounter were militants.

The All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers and Pullers Association (AMRDPA), said that Rehaman, who was member of the organization, was use to ferry passengers from Imphal to Moreh town from last 15 years. (ANI)

MJ Vienna tribute gig postponed

London, September 12 (ANI): The concert in honour of Michael Jackson slated to take place in Vienna this month has been rearranged for London in June next year.

The singer’s brother Jermaine previously named a host of artists who would perform at the tribute that was set to take place in front of former imperial Schoenbrunn Palace on September 26.

But the former ‘Jackson 5′ member revealed many top artists were unavailable for the date due to prior commitments.

“Numerous stars were just not able to change their schedules to make a live appearance at the Vienna event possible,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

He added: “Many artists and performers who I have spoken to personally told me that it would be a great honour to be part of this memorial concert for my late brother.

“However, due to the short time-frame it was not possible for many of them to change their schedule so that they could be on stage in Vienna on 26 September, therefore we decided, after careful consideration, to change the date of the tribute concert to June 2010 – just a few weeks before the first anniversary of his untimely death.

Geri Halliwell on women-welfare mission in Nepal

Washington, September 11 (ANI): Former Spice Girls member Geri Halliwell showed her humanistic side by launching a campaign to help women suffering from gender based violence in Nepal.

As goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund, the singer is currently on a visit to the country to promote maternal health care and women’s rights.

“When we empower women and take care of them, everyone benefits,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling reporters in the region.

The beauty met the country’s Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal for support to raise awareness of violence against women in the south-west of the country.

Halliwell also spoke about the dangers of domestic abuse and a lack of medical care for pregnant women. (ANI)

Arrest warrant issued against ex-Pak diplomat for issuing fake passport to Indian

Islamabad, Sep.11 (ANI): An arrest warrant has been issued against Pakistan’s former Consul General in Houston (US) on charges of issuing a Pakistani passport to an Indian national.

Assistant Consul General Muhammad Naeem, who is under the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) custody for the last 17 months, told a three member Supreme Court bench that former Pakistani Consul General, Ghulam Rasool, has been asked to appear before the court while issuing an arrest warrant against him.

It may be recalled that Naeem was also arrested for issuing a forged Pakistani passport to an Indian national named Aziz Moosa.

The passport issued by Naeem was in the name of Sayyed Ali.

After the hearing the court rejected Naeem’s bail plea and disposed of the case with directions to the NAB to decide the case within three months, The Daily Times reported. (ANI)

Cabinet approves signing, ratification of BIMST Convention

New Delhi, Sep 10(ANI): A Union Cabinet meeting on Thursday discussed topics, including the revamping of the National Rural Health Mission and approval for the signing and ratification of the BIMST (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand) Convention.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said: “This convention will provide strong legal basis for cooperation among the law enforcement agencies of the BIMST member states. It will give a much needed thrust to the enforcement agencies of the BIMST member states which are Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand.”

The proposal will be signed during the forthcoming BIMST Ministerial Conference.

On the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Soni said: “The mission (National Rural Health Mission) now seeks to provide universal access to affordable and quality healthcare which is accountable and at the same time responsive to the needs of the people.”

She said the Government would launch an annual health survey in some states to provide feedback on the impact of schemes underthe NRHM on health indicators like Maternal Mortality Rates and Total Fertility Rates.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with the Registrar General of India, Ministry of Home Affairs will be conducting the survey and would compute the statistics, she added. (ANI)

Shekhawat says Jaswant’s expulsion wrong

New Delhi, Sep 10(ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Thursday said the decision to expel Jaswant Singh was wrong.

“The way Jaswant Singh has been treated, I do not approve of it,” Shekhawat said.

Shekhawat was in the national capital. Jaswant Singh called on him, but said his visit did not have any political motive.

“I had come to enquire about his health and did not come here (Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s residence) with a political motive. As you know, I’m not a member of the BJP and Bhairon Singh was one of the founder members of the party. So, I have come to see him,” said Singh.

Jaswant Singh was expelled from the party last month for writing a controversial book that was sympathetic to Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, but critical of India’s first Home Minister Sardar Patel and first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru for their role in the partition of the Indian subcontinent. Demonstration in Shopian over death of property dealer

Shopian (J-K), Sep 10 (ANI): Hundreds of residents on Wednesday took to the streets in Shopian town, 60 km from Srinagar, after a missing local was found dead.

Frenzied locals raised anti-India slogans during the funeral procession of Mohammad Hussain Zargar, a prominent member of the local ‘Majlis-e-Mushawarat’ (council for discussion), the organisation that spearheaded protests to seek justice for the rape and murder of two Muslim women.

The body of Zargar, a 42-year-old property dealer, was discovered on Tuesday He was missing since Saturday and residents alleged he had died under mysterious circumstances.

Government offices and schools remained closed and business activity came to a standstill in the town on Wednesday after Majlis-e-Mushawarat gave a shutdown call demanding a probe into Zargar’s death.

“Nothing can be said at this time. The post-mortem report is not out, when the report is out only then we can clear about that what has happened. Let’s wait for report then we will talk about it and thereafter investigations also take place, things become clear then we will come out with a positive response on the case, well,” said Muhammad Shafi Khan, spokesman for the majlis. Jermaine Jackson backtracks on Chris Brown tribute announcement

London, September 10 (ANI): Jermaine Jackson has climbed down from his announcement that Chris Brown would form a part of the forthcoming concert in honour of his late brother Michael.

The former ‘Jackson 5′ member previously revealed Brown would be among a host of other artists to perform at the tribute set to take place in front of Vienna’s former imperial Schoenbrunn Palace on September 26.

But representatives for Brown, who is presently on probation for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna earlier this year, subsequently denied the story, reports the Daily Express.

And now, Jackson has backtracked on his earlier announcement, saying he was only inviting the shamed singer to perform.

The 54-year-old said in a second press conference in London that he was not announcing headline acts but would like to see Brown be part of the show if he is allowed out of the U.S.

He said: “It’s up to the judge if he gets let out of the country or not. I’m not worried at all. He wants to be here. It’s just up to what he’s going through with his court case right now.

“He’s asked for forgiveness. If Christ can forgive him, so can we. People make mistakes, but he’s a wonderful performer.” (ANI)
