India will send black box to US

New Delhi, May 28 — The black box and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which hold the key to investigations into the tragic May 22 Mangalore Air India crash, would be sent to USA, where it would be decoded. Top sources in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – the civil aviation safety regulator – said they had decided to use the services of the best available lab in the world.

“We don’t want to take any chances. We have decided to send the black box and CVR to the best lab in USA. Certain formalities need to be completed before this can be done and we are in the process of completing them,” a DGCA official said.

Sources said the laboratory of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an autonomous agency of the US government, could be used for this purpose. A three-member team of the NTSB is already in Delhi coordinating closely with the DGCA team probing the case.

“Though the CVR was recovered in partially damaged state – affected by fire – it is expected to yield the desired information. Digital Flight Data Recorder commonly known as Black Box, the most vital source of information, has also been impacted by the crash,” the official said.

Mercedes GP chief backs Schumacher despite flop comeback

London, Apr 1(ANI): Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has been given a vote of confidence by his Mercedes Grand Prix team chief Norbert Haug despite a nightmare start to his comeback.

Schumacher finished sixth and 10th in his first two races in Bahrain and Australia after three years out of the sport, and has also been outraced by team-mate Nico Rosberg.

However, Haug insisted: “Michael is as good as ever. He has got it still.”

“He could sit on his sofa saying, ”Nobody won more than I did” – but this is his passion. But he is a more relaxed guy than ever, he has fun, he is a very good team member, team player,” The Sun quoted Haug, as saying.

Haug further said that Schumacher is back in the F1 to be competitive, and reiterated his claims that Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was blocking the German in qualifying last Saturday.

“If you look at the times, if you look at qualifying, Michael was handicapped behind Alonso. It is fair to say it was a very comparable lap to Nico, who I think is one of the highest-rated guys of the current generation, with four years” experience,” Haug said.

“We have one of the strongest driver pairings in the field. It is up to us to improve the package further. It is fair to say we improved it on this track compared to Bahrain,” he added. (ANI)

Four-member team set up to probe Air India fire incident

Mumbai, Sep 5 (ANI): A four-member in-house committee has been set up to probe the Air India fire incident that took place at Mumbai International Airport on Friday.

Nearly 200 passengers were onboard on Riyadh bound Air India flight (AI-829) while the aircraft’s left engine caught fire while taking off.

Many passengers suffered bruises and cuts while sliding down from the chutes but were taken to the Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) casualty centre and given first aid.

Ruling out the possibility of a technical snag leading to the grounding of the aircraft at Mumbai Airport, aviation experts said the fuel leaked onto the heated engines of the aircraft and that had caused the fire.

They said that timely information provided by a passenger led the crew to stop the flight from taxing off the runway for Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.

Flight 829 was immediately grounded when sparks were detected flying out of one of the engines.

The 213 passengers onboard were evacuated by slides to safety. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot, as also other equipment and personnel. (ANI)

The team skied down the peak, despite heavy snow accumulation and high velocity blizzards.

Renowned Everester Harbhajan Singh led the 47-member team. Earlier, Singh had led a successful ski down expedition from Mount Abi Gamin in 2006.

Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on this occasion appreciated the team and described their feat as “a big achievement” for the team.

TSNM chief Sufi Muhammad missing since Apr. 25

Peshawar, Apr 28 (ANI): The exact whereabouts of Tehrik-i-Nifaz-i-Shariat Muhammadi chief Sufi Muhammad, who negotiated the Swat deal with NWFP Government, is not known and is reportedly missing since April 25.

The government as well as followers of his defunct TNSM are looking for him for one reason: To start talks to remove the last few remaining hurdles in the enforcement of Nizam-i-Adl Regulation in Swat.

Sufi Mohammad was last seen leaving for his home in Lal Qila area from his base camp in Maidan on Saturday afternoon, The Dawn reported.

According to TSNM spokesman Ameer Izzat, the cleric started for his base camp along with his son Ziaullah, just when the paramilitary forces moved in to attack militants’ hideout in Lal Qila.

“The last time we had contact with Sufi Sahib was when he said he was on his way to Maidan. He said that he wanted to return home but he was not allowed to proceed by security people because of the fighting there,” Ameer Izzat said.

“There has been no communication since then and we don’t know where he is. Everybody is looking for him. We are looking for him. The government is looking for him. We are concerned. We want him to come back and resume talks,” he said.

Ironically, the NWFP Government faces the same predicament. It desperately needs to start talks and announce the remaining steps for the implementation of the recently announced regulation, but it does not know where to find the TNSM chief.

In fact, a two-member team of the NWFP government comprising Senator Afrasiab Khattak and Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain flew into Upper Dir on Monday. But Sufi was nowhere to be seen.

Anxious to resolve the remaining issues, the government is believed to have reached out to all those who could locate Sufi Mohammed. One significant announcement would be the setting up of Darul Qaza in Malakand. (ANI)

Poll panel orders transfer of three Jaunpur officials

New Delhi/Lucknow, April 20 (IANS) The Election Commission Monday ordered the transfer of three officials of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Indian Justice Party’s (IJP) Jaunpur candidate Bahadur Sonkar even as the state police dubbed the suspected murder as a ‘suicide’.

‘After going through the report of two IAS (officers) deputed by the Election Commission to visit Jaunpur, the commission orders immediate transfer of Ramkishore, Additional Superintendent of Police (city), Dipender Nath Chaudhary, Circle Officer, and Sanjay Kumar Rai, SHO Jaunpur,’ the poll panel said in a statement.

‘Election will be held in Jaunpur (Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh) as scheduled,’ it said.

Addressing a press conference late Monday evening, state Director General of Police Vikram Singh said in Lucknow: ‘The preliminary investigation carried out by a special team headed by Additional Director General – Criminal Investigation Department – Padman Singh has found that prima facie the death of Bahadur Sonkar was a result of suicide.’

He parried questions raised by journalists and literally dragged away ADG (CID) Padam Singh in an obvious bid to avoid answering uncomfortable queries.

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) nominee for the Jaunpur seat Dhananjay Singh is a key accused in the death.

Sonkar’s body was found hanging from a tree, at a height of 15 feet high, on April 13 days after he refused to withdraw his nomination. He was reportedly being pressurised to withdraw from the race by a local deputy superintendent of police, known for his proximity to Singh.

The poll panel had sent a special two member team of non-Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officers to carry out a separate inquiry into the incident.

It received the probe report on the death of Sonkar Sunday evening.

Sonkar’s brother Barhu Ram Sonkar had accused the state government of going all out to put a smokescreen over the alleged involvement of a BSP candidate in the murder.

The victim’s brother had filed a complaint to the Election Commission.

Video of Taliban flogging girl a fake: Investigators

Islamabad, April 19 (IANS) The video footage of a girl being flogged by Taliban militants in Pakistan’s restive Swat valley is a fake, a five-member team of investigators has said in its final report.

Interior Secretary Kamal Shah said: ‘It (the probe team) has completed its investigation and handed over a report to me.’

The report said the video footage was ‘false and fake’ and no such incident had taken place, Shah was quoted as saying by the Dawn.

Shah was speaking at a press conference Friday at the Commissioner’s House in Saidu Sharif in Swat district.

He said the probe team, headed by the Malakand deputy inspector general of police, had been formed after the Supreme Court chief took a suo motu notice of the incident.

The report would be submitted before an eight-member bench of the Supreme Court during the next hearing, he said, adding the team had recorded statements of ‘both the girl and the man who were allegedly flogged and they had disowned the video tape’.

The dangers of imposing Sharia laws in Pakistan’s restive Swat Valley were brought into sharp focus earlier this month with the airing of a two-minute video showing the 17-year-old screaming, burqa-clad girl being whipped by Taliban fighters for coming ‘out of her house with another guy who was not her husband’.

The grainy video, shot on a mobile phone, showed the girl face down on the ground. Two men held her arms and feet while a third, a black-turbaned fighter with a flowing beard, whipped her repeatedly, London’s Guardian newspaper had reported.

The newspaper said it received the video through Samar Minallah, a Pashtun documentary maker.

After 34 lashes the punishment stopped and the wailing girl was led into a stone building.

The NWFP government ceded authority to the Taliban under a peace deal, giving the militants a free hand to impose their puritan Islamic rule on the around 600,000 people of Swat and its neighbouring districts.

The peace accord signed with pro-Taliban cleric Maulana Sufi Mohammad includes measures to establish Islamic courts, a ban on music, expulsion of prostitutes and pimps from the area, closure of businesses during prayer times, and a campaign against what they call obscenity.

Taliban disrupts polio campaign in Hangu

Hangu (NWFP), Apr. 14 (ANI): The Taliban has stopped the polio vaccination drive in Hangu region by threatening to kidnap health officials if they go ahead with the campaign.

“Armed Taliban came here and told my three-member team to stop vaccinating children. We stopped work in the area immediately after the Taliban warning, and this is the reason the Taliban have not done anything so far,” the Daily Times quoted Khan Meer, head of one of the polio teams working in Darsmand, as saying.

The campaign was launched on Monday in Darsmand union council of Lal tehsil as part of three-day polio drive in Hangu and Orakzai Agency.

No health official had been kidnapped, but the campaign had been abandoned in one union council.

“I have given clear directives to the polio teams across the province to stop the drive in case the Taliban show up,” Gul Rehman, Head of Hangu polio drive, said.

Under this drive, polio vaccine was planned to be administered to 83,674 children in the agency and 92,418 children in Hangu. (ANI)

Raghavan panel reaches Himachal to probe ragging death

Shimla, April 9 (IANS) A three-member commitee of the Supreme Court Thursday reached Himachal Pradesh to probe the death of a first-year medical student last month allegedly due to ragging.

Aman Kachru, 19, died March 8, a few hours after being allegedly ragged by four final-year students of the Rajendra Prasad Medical College at Tanda town in Kangra district.

The magisterial inquiry as well as the police report pointed out that Kachru succumbed to his injuries caused during the ragging by the four senior students.

‘A three-member team of the Raghavan Committee this (Thursday) evening reached the medical college to investigate into the death of the first-year student,’ Anil Chauhan, the new principal of the medical college, told IANS on phone.

He said the committee members included A.K. Aggarwal, dean of the Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, and Rajindra Prasad, principal of Ramjas College, Delhi.

‘They (the team) will study in detail ragging incidents in the college and the alleged negligence on the part of college authorities in treating the victim (Kachru),’ he said.

‘The team will remain here till Friday.’

The Raghavan panel will submit its report to the apex court before the next hearing in the case.

Earlier, a team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) had completed its probe and submitted it to the apex court.

The team had recorded the statements of doctors from various departments, staff of the college, Kachru’s friends and students.

State Principal Secretary (Health) Deepak Sanan said the government had initiated action on the report of the magisterial probe.

‘Show-cause notices have been issued to 40 persons, including two former principals of the college, in whose tenure ragging incidents had taken place from 2001 onwards. Their names cropped up in the magisterial inquiry report concerning the death of Kachru,’ he said.

They have been asked to file their replies by April 23, he said.

Former principal S. Shankayan was suspended on the directions of the apex court March 30.

A bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly ordered immediate suspension of Shankayan after the MCI and the Himachal Pradesh government, in their separate reports to the court, disclosed that he had ignored the incidents of ragging despite being informed about these by the security guards of the hostel.

Soon after Kachru’s death March 8, the state government divested him of the post of the college head, but let him continue as the head of the Department of Forensic Medicine in the college.

But infuriated over Shankayan’s inaction, the bench ordered his suspension, saying: ‘Don’t let him even enter the college premises.’

The bench observed that deaths and suicides by students ‘due to ragging is a national tragedy’.
