Sarkozy: Hamas responsible for suffering of Palestinians

Ramallah – French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Monday night for an urgent truce between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip, and blamed Hamas for the violence which has seen 550 Palestinians killed and over 2600 wounded in 10 days of Israeli attacks.

Addressing a joint news conference in Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and a European Union delegation, he condemned the firing of rockets into Israel, stressing that Hamas “acted in an irresponsible and unforgivable way” when it ended a truce on December 19 and began launching missiles at the Jewish state.

“Hamas bears a big responsibility for the suffering of the people in Gaza,” he said.

At the same time, the French leader condemned the Israeli ground incursion into the Gaza Strip which began Saturday night after a week of heavy Israel Air Force raids on the salient.

“We had very clearly condemned the Israeli ground assault,” he said, adding that he will make this position very clear to Israeli officials when he meets them later Monday night.

“Violence should stop and humanitarian assistance should be delivered and facilitated. We cannot understand how Israel, a democracy, can allow the humanitarian situation in Gaza to get worse,” he said.

He said the urgent thing at this time is to bring an end to the violence.

“We want a ceasefire as soon as possible,” he said. “This alone will help resume the peace process.”

He said Europe has a responsibility and a role its wants to play in the Middle East.

Sarkozy’s call for an immediate ceasefire was also echoed by Abbas and the EU delegation.

“What we want is to see an end to the aggression against the Palestinian people,” Abbas said, explaining that he was leaving for New York later Monday night to attend a Security Council meeting on Gaza hoping to get a resolution calling for an immediate truce.

Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, said Europe is working on a ceasefire.

In addition to Schwarzenberg, the EU delegation at the news conference included EU top diplomat Javier Solana, EU Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt. (dpa)

‘Revised’ Harry Potter encyclopaedia set to go on sale in UK

London, Jan 2 (ANI): A new version of the Harry Potter encyclopaedia, which multi-millionaire author JK Rowling went to court to stop, is to go on sale in Britain later this month.

The 43-year-old author of Potter took Harry Potter fan and author Steve Vander Ark to court over the 400-page Lexicon which she said constituted “wholesale theft of 17 years of my hard work”.

A US judge ruled in Rowling”s favour in a copyright-infringement lawsuit in September, permanently blocking the publication of the reference guide.

But now Steve Vander Ark is to publish a revised edition which he says meets specifications laid out in the ruling.

Vander Ark, a 50-year-old former school librarian who launched The Harry Potter Lexicon web site in 2000, spent five or six months working on the new version.

It also includes information revealed during the three-day court hearing in April, reports the Telegraph.

“We learned a lot at the trial about what was acceptable, what would follow the fair use guidelines,” said Vander Ark, of Michigan.

“That was not clear before. There was no law on the books that made it clear what was acceptable and what wasn”t. So, coming out of the trial, I had a much better idea of what should go into the book,” he added.

Publisher Roger Rapoport said the biggest difference between the two versions was that the new one contains “a lot more critical commentary, which means more analysis”.

“It isn”t just saying what happens, it”s his interpretation of why it”s important,” Rapoport said.

The Lexicon: An Unauthorised Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Materials will go on sale in the UK on January 16. (ANI)

Steven Soderbergh plans rock ””n”” roll 3D musical about Cleopatra

New York, January 1 (ANI): Oscar-winning American director Steven Soderbergh is planning a rock ””n”” roll 3D musical about Cleopatra.

He is teaming up with Hugh Jackman and Catherine Zeta-Jones for the musical.

“Our version (of the Cleopatra story) will be like an Elvis musical in 3D. It””s a total rock ””n”” roll, 1966 aesthetic – like ””Viva Las Vegas”” meets ””Tommy””,” the New York Post quoted Soderbergh as telling Britain””s Independent.

“I””ve wanted my whole career to make a musical. And the 3D makes it more challenging but makes it more fun,” he added.

Soderbergh””s most recent work was the 4½-hour ‘Che’, which was critically slammed. (ANI)
