”Safe” ciggies as hazardous as tobacco

Washington, May 13 (ANI): Tobacco-free cigarettes may be more carcinogenic by actually inducing more extensive DNA damage than tobacco products, a team of researchers has found.

In the study, researchers found that cigarettes made without tobacco or nicotine may be more carcinogenic because they actually induce more extensive DNA damage than tobacco products.

The research team was led by Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology. Their study, “DNA damage response induced by exposure of human lung adenocarcinoma cells to smoke from tobacco- and nicotine-free cigarettes,” will appear in the June 1 issue of Cell Cycle.

Using laser scanning cytometry (LSC) technology to measure DNA damage response to the smoke from commercially available tobacco- and nicotine-free cigarettes, the research team expected to find the alternative products were less hazardous than regular tobacco cigarettes.

However, their data suggest that exposure of cells to smoke from tobacco- and nicotine-free cigarettes leads to formation of double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs). Since DSBs are potentially carcinogenic, the data indicate that smoking tobacco- and nicotine-free cigarettes is at least as hazardous as those containing tobacco and nicotine.

The authors conclude that their methodology to assess the potential carcinogenic properties of tobacco smoke, based on measurement of DNA damage response as assessed by LSC, provides a useful addition to the battery of genotoxic tests for probing cigarette smoke hazards. (ANI)

Robert J. Mislevy Appointed to Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement & Statistics

PRINCETON, NJ, Apr 02 (MARKET WIRE) —
Dr. Robert J. Mislevy will assume the Frederic M. Lord Chair in
Measurement and Statistics at Educational Testing Service (ETS), company
officials announced today. He is currently a professor in the Department
of Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation, and an Affiliated Professor
of Second Language Acquisition and of Survey Methods, at the University
of Maryland, College Park. Mislevy worked at ETS from 1984 to 2001.

The ETS Board of Trustees created the Lord Chair to honor the outstanding
achievements and contributions of the late Frederick M. Lord, not just to
ETS but nationally and internationally in the fields of statistics and
psychometrics. In addition, the position honors the achievements of an
individual whose research in these fields has built on the foundations
created by Dr. Lord. Mislevy succeeds Dr. Paul Holland, first holder of
the Lord Chair.

“We are extremely pleased that Dr. Mislevy is returning to ETS to assume
the Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics,” said ETS President and CEO
Kurt Landgraf. “Fred Lord was a pioneer in the field of educational
measurement, and his innovative work was instrumental in helping ETS

today, and Dr. Mislevy’s demonstrated leadership in cognitive psychology

Mislevy received his Ph.D. in Methodology of Behavioral Research at the
University of Chicago. He has published two monographs and three edited
volumes. In addition, he has published more than 150 journal articles,
book chapters, and technical reports, including the chapter on Cognitive
Psychology and Educational Assessment in the 4th edition of “Educational
Measurement.” He is a co-holder of three patents.

“Dr. Mislevy is the perfect fit for this role, given his exceptional work
in applying advances in statistics, technology, and the learning and
cognitive sciences to practical problems in educational assessment. We
are extraordinarily fortunate to have Bob rejoin ETS,” added Senior Vice
President Ida Lawrence, who leads ETS’s Research and Development Division
where Dr. Mislevy will be located.

Among his honors and awards are the National Council of Measurement in
Education’s award for career contributions to educational measurement and
the American Educational Research Association’s Lindquist Award for
contributions to educational measurement. In 1994, he was elected
president of the Psychometric Society, and in 2007 was elected to the
National Academy of Education. He has served on the Defense Language
Testing Advisory Board, the Board of Testing and Assessment, and
committees of the National Research Council on issues concerning
assessment, instruction, and cognitive psychology. Mislevy also was a
primary author of the final report of the National Assessment Governing
Board’s Design Feasibility Team.

The holder of the Lord Chair will work to advance the field of
educational measurement and contribute to the improvement of ETS products
and services by providing intellectual leadership, conducting and
disseminating research, and providing consultation to ETS staff and
clients, especially in the areas of measurement and statistics. He will
assume the Lord Chair on
February 1, 2011.

90 percent of distant galaxies have gone undiscovered, say astronomers

Washington, March 26 (ANI): Astronomers, using two of the four giant 8.2-metre telescopes that make up ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), have determined that 90 percent of galaxies whose light took 10 billion years to reach us have gone undiscovered.

Astronomers frequently use the strong, characteristic “fingerprint” of light emitted by hydrogen known as the Lyman-alpha line, to probe the amount of stars formed in the very distant Universe.

Yet there have long been suspicions that many distant galaxies go unnoticed in these surveys.

The new VLT survey demonstrates for the first time that this is exactly what is happening.

Most of the Lyman-alpha light is trapped within the galaxy that emits it, and 90 percent of galaxies do not show up in Lyman-alpha surveys.

“Astronomers always knew they were missing some fraction of the galaxies in Lyman-alpha surveys, but for the first time we now have a measurement. The number of missed galaxies is substantial,” explained Matthew Hayes, the lead author of the research paper.

To figure out how much of the total luminosity was missed, Hayes and his team used the FORS camera at the VLT and a custom-built narrowband filter to measure this Lyman-alpha light, following the methodology of standard Lyman-alpha surveys.

Then, using the new HAWK-I camera, attached to another VLT Unit Telescope, they surveyed the same area of space for light emitted at a different wavelength, also by glowing hydrogen, and known as the H-alpha line.

They specifically looked at galaxies whose light has been travelling for 10 billion years, in a well-studied area of the sky, known as the GOODS-South field.

“This is the first time we have observed a patch of the sky so deeply in light coming from hydrogen at these two very specific wavelengths, and this proved crucial,” said team member Goran Ostlin.

The survey was extremely deep, and uncovered some of the faintest galaxies known at this early epoch in the life of the Universe.

The astronomers could thereby conclude that traditional surveys done using Lyman-alpha only see a tiny part of the total light that is produced, since most of the Lyman-alpha photons are destroyed by interaction with the interstellar clouds of gas and dust.

This effect is dramatically more significant for Lyman-alpha than for H-alpha light. As a result, many galaxies, a proportion as high as 90 percent, go unseen by these surveys.

“If there are ten galaxies seen, there could be a hundred there,” Hayes said. (ANI)

Wimmera jobless rate improving

The Wimmera’s high employment rate is showing signs of improvement.

In the Wimmera and Central Highlands in January, the unemployment rate reached a 30-month high of 10 per cent.

February figures are showing improvement, with unemployment now down to 7.5 per cent.

But the participation rate – a measurement of how many people are in or looking for jobs – has shown more people have given up the search.

It is at just under 62 per cent compared to 64 per cent last month and 66 per cent this time last year.

The new figures also show improvement in the Loddon Mallee region.

The unemployment rate is down from 6.7 to 6.3 per cent and the participation rate is up slightly from 62 to 63 per cent.

2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines well tolerated, induce strong immune response in adults

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Early results from various clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines in healthy adults seem to be quite encouraging, say U.S. health experts.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S., has revealed that the early data from these trials suggest that 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines are well tolerated, and induce a strong immune response in most healthy adults, when administered in a single unadjuvanted 15-microgram dose.

It has even congratulated the companies that have carried out these trials, which it claims are an important part of the ongoing worldwide effort to develop vaccines to protect the public from 2009 H1N1 influenza.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is also conducting clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, produced by Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited.

The trials are testing two different dosages-15 micrograms versus 30 micrograms-and evaluating the immune response to one and two doses of these vaccines.

More than 2,800 people are said to be participating in the ongoing NIAID trials of these vaccines.

The institute says that preliminary analyses of early data from its trials align with the recently announced findings, and those to be announced imminently by other companies.

Additional data from the NIAID trials are forthcoming.

“However, on the basis of these strong early data, our results are consonant with other reports that a single 15-microgram dose of unadjuvanted 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is well tolerated and induces a robust immune response in healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64. For adults aged 65 and older, the immune response to 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is somewhat less robust, as is the case with seasonal influenza vaccines,” the institute said in a press release.

“We note that the slight discrepancies seen in our trials between the Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited vaccines may be due to technical differences in the preliminary measurement of the amounts of antigen in the doses used in the clinical trial lots and the relatively limited numbers of samples studied to date, as well as the fact that our data are drawn from a very early time point after immunization,” the institute added. World’s most advanced CT scanner to see through solids

Washington, September 11 (ANI): Researchers at The University of Nottingham, UK, have created the most advanced 3D X-ray micro Computed Tomography (CT) scanner in the world, which will help scientists from a wide variety of departments across the University literally see through solid materials, including soil.

Known as the ‘Nanotom’, the machine will make previously difficult and laborious research much easier as it allows researchers to probe inside objects without having to break into them.

The Nanotom will produce high-resolution 3D and slice images of solids with a pixel resolution of up to half micron or 500 nanometres.

It will be based at the School of Biosciences as the centrepiece of research into efforts to understand the microscopic interactions between plant root growth and soil structure.

The first project to use it will examine the sensing ability of roots to grow in the best direction for the health of the plant through the soil.

It aims to provide evidence of how the root reacts and adapts to soil stresses like drought and compaction by adjusting the genetic information in the tips of the root as it grows.

The Nanotom will allow researchers to follow the progress of the root growth and soil structural development for the first time without disturbing the sample of the plant growing in the soil.

The eventual aim of research like this is to contribute to worldwide efforts for food security and sustainable food production by preserving and improving the vital but finite soil resources of the planet.

It will enable scientists to come up with a recipe for the best soil composition and level of compaction as well as informing plant breeding programmes.

Accurate soil structure measurement will be also be essential in changing farming practices to cut CO2 which is released into the atmosphere during traditional ploughing of agricultural soil.

According to Dr Sacha Mooney from the University’s Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, “This new kit will completely revolutionize our work in trying to understand the key factors that control some of the many functions that soils perform.”

“Of course it’s not just soils we’ll be scanning, I think I am just as excited about the opportunity to look inside newly created environmental building materials, eco-friendly crops developed to improve yield and even chocolate bars for the food industry,” Mooney added. (ANI)

New biomarker can bring rapid relief from major depression

Washington, Sept 11 (ANI): Scientists from University of California have identified a biomarker that can help accurately predict whether a particular drug will be effective in treating major depression.

During the study, the researchers measured changes in brain-wave patterns using quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), a non-invasive, computerized measurement that recognizes specific alterations in brain-wave activity.

These changes precede improvement in mood by many weeks and appear to serve as a biomarker that accurately predicts how effective a given medication will be.

The new non-invasive test would help predict within a week whether a particular drug will be effective.

The added benefit of the biomarker test is that it ispainless and fast – about 15 minutes – and only involves the placement of six electrodes around the forehead and on the earlobes.

The researchers recruited a total of 375 people who had been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and prescribed the antidepressant escitalopram, commonly known as Lexapro.

Then they examined a biomarker called the antidepressant treatment response (ATR) index – a specific change in brain-wave patterns.

The study showed that the ATR predicted both response and remission with an accuracy rate of 74 percent, much higher than any other method available.

The researchers also found that they could predict whether subjects were more likely to respond to a different antidepressant, bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin XL.

“Until now, other than waiting, there has been no reliable method for predicting whether a medication would lead to a good response or remission,” said Dr. Andrew Leuchter, professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and lead author of the study.

“And that wait can be as long as 14 weeks. So these are very exciting findings for the patient suffering from depression,” said Leuchter.

The study results appear in the journal Psychiatry Research. (ANI)

Need to prevent periodontitis to cut head and neck cancer risk

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Buffalo have stressed on the need for increased efforts to prevent and treat chronic periodontitis, a form of gum disease, to reduce the risk for head and neck cancer.

Led by Dr. Mine Tezal at Buffalo, periodontitis is an independent risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

“Prevent periodontitis; if you have it already, get treatment and maintain good oral hygiene,” said Tezal.

Chronic periodontitis is characterized by progressive loss of the bone and soft tissue attachment that surround the teeth.

The researchers assessed the role of chronic periodontitis on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, as well as the individual roles on three subsites: oral cavity, oropharyngeal and laryngeal.

They used radiographic measurement of bone loss to measure periodontitis among 463 patients, 207 of whom were controls.

The results of the study revealed that chronic periodontitis might represent a clinical high-risk profile for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

The strength of the association was greatest in the oral cavity, followed by the oropharynx and larynx, according to Tezal.

When they stratified the relationship by tobacco use, they found that the association persisted in those patients who never used tobacco.

The researchers did not expect the periodontitis-head and neck squamous cell carcinoma association to be weaker in current smokers compared to former and never smokers, according to Tezal.

However, this interaction, although statistically significant, was not very strong.

“Confirmatory studies with more comprehensive assessment of smoking, such as duration, quantity and patterns of use, as well as smokeless tobacco history are needed,” said Tezal.

“Our study also suggests that chronic periodontitis may be associated with poorly differentiated tumor status in the oral cavity. Continuous stimulation of cellular proliferation by chronic inflammation may be responsible for this histological type. However, grading is subjective and we only observed this association in the oral cavity. Therefore, this association may be due to chance and needs further exploration,” she added.

Andrew Olshan, Ph.D., said these results lend further support to the potential importance of poor oral health in this form of cancer.

Olshan said, “Although the study is comparatively small, the researchers were able to also see an association between bone loss and the risk of head and neck cancer.”

The results of the study have been published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. (ANI)

Kolkata slum kids make music instruments out of waste material

Kolkata, Aug 28 (ANI): A group of slum kids gave the waste material a shape of a musical instrument and established a music band in Kolkata.

Known as ‘Hriday Akash’, the band has the music instruments made out of waste material like bowls, plastic bottles, glass bangles, bottle covers, thermocol and tin drums.

The turning point for these nine school dropouts came when they were picked up by Niranjan Goswami who got engaged them in this activity.

“We first tried to engage them by entertaining them. We thought that by learning painting they would get knowledge of geometry and measurement. Then in music, they will learn sounds and will get knowledge of sounds. Then this is how slowly an orchestra was formed,” said Goswami, secretary, ‘Hriday Akash’.

The kids are happy to have given their imagination a full play.

“What we play here are not original instruments. We use things which are normally thrown away, like bowls, plastic bottles, glass bangles, bottle covers, thermocol and tin drums. We learn along while playing these instruments,” said Surojit Hazra, a member of the music band.

‘Laughing gas’ leaves ozone layer in splits

Washington, August 28 (ANI): A new study has determined that nitrous dioxide, popularly known as ‘laughing gas’, has now become the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities, and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century.

The study was authored by A.R. Ravishankara, J.S. Daniel and Robert W. Portmann of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) chemical sciences division.

For the first time, this study has evaluated nitrous oxide emissions from human activities in terms of their potential impact on Earth’s ozone layer.

As chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which have been phased out by international agreement, ebb in the atmosphere, nitrous oxide will remain a significant ozone-destroyer, the study found.

Today, nitrous oxide emissions from human activities are more than twice as high as the next leading ozone-depleting gas.

Nitrous oxide is emitted from natural sources and as a byproduct of agricultural fertilization and other industrial processes.

Calculating the effect on the ozone layer now and in the future, NOAA researchers found that emissions of nitrous oxide from human activities erode the ozone layer and will continue to do so for many decades.

ESRL tracks the thickness of the ozone layer, as well as the burden of ozone-depleting compounds in the atmosphere. It maintains a large portion of the world air sampling and measurement network.

NOAA scientists also conduct fundamental studies of the atmosphere and atmospheric processes to improve understanding of ozone depletion and of the potential for recovery the ozone layer.

“The dramatic reduction in CFCs over the last 20 years is an environmental success story. But manmade nitrous oxide is now the elephant in the room among ozone-depleting substances,” said Ravishankara, lead author of the study and director of the ESRL Chemical Sciences Division in Boulder, Colorado.

The ozone layer serves to shield plants, animals and people from excessive ultraviolet light from the sun.

Thinning of the ozone layer allows more ultraviolet light to reach the Earth’s surface where it can damage crops and aquatic life and harm human health.

Though the role of nitrous oxide in ozone depletion has been known for several decades, the new study is the first to explicitly calculate that role using the same measures that have been applied to CFCs, halons and other chlorine- and bromine-containing ozone-depleting substances.

According to scientists, nitrous oxide is also a greenhouse gas, so reducing its emission from manmade sources would be good for both the ozone layer and climate. (ANI)

Soon, simple blood test to identify stroke survivors at risk of another cardiovascular event

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): A simple blood test would soon help identify stroke survivors at risk of another cardiovascular event, say researchers.

The research team from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill suggests that measuring blood flow in the ankle may identify stroke survivors at risk of subsequent events such as asymptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) and transient ischemic attack (TIA).

In the test, the ankle brachial index, compares blood flow in the ankle to blood flow in the arm to detect poor circulation caused by fatty plaque buildup in the lower body, a condition known as peripheral artery disease (PAD).

The findings revealed that 26 percent of the survivors had asymptomatic PAD, and they had three times more subsequent cardiovascular events – stroke, heart attacks or death – in the following two years compared to those without PAD.

Furthermore 50 percent with asymptomatic PAD suffered subsequent events, compared with 16 percent of those without the disease. PAD was significantly associated with future vascular events, especially strokes.

PAD occurs when arteries in the extremities become obstructed by plaque. Leg pain, cramping, weakness and limping during physical exertion are the primary symptom.

“ABI measurement may be appropriate for screening stroke/TIA patients who may be at high risk for vascular events,” said lead researcher Dr Souvik Sen, M.P.H., director of the Stroke Centre at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

“The test is easily performed in less than 15 minutes at the physician’s office or at bed-side in hospitalized patients,” he added.

Airframe tests to help ensure better air travel safety

Washington, August 27 (ANI): Recent tests by researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will provide much needed, independent data on how electromagnetic radiation penetrates aircraft, helping to ensure continued air travel safety.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires aircraft manufacturers to demonstrate that their aircraft have effective high intensity radiated field (HIRF) protection.

The manufacturers conduct tests on their aircraft and provide those results to the FAA as part of the certification process.

The tests are designed to show where and to what extent electromagnetic radiation, across a wide spectrum of frequencies, penetrates a given craft’s airframe.

This information is important in determining if and where shielding is needed to protect vital electronic instrumentation from malfunction or damage while flying through ground-based radar beams, for example.

This effort was undertaken to assist the FAA with HIRF measurement procedures and data processing methodologies.

The FAA has struggled with data sets provided by HIRF testers because they use a wide range of measurement/data processing techniques that are not standardized.

For an independent analysis of the situation, a NIST team recently performed HIRF tests on three representative aircraft to give FAA officials a frame of reference for the procedures and data reduction techniques used for typical low-level airframe HIRF attenuation/shielding tests.

Having this information will help the FAA ensure that commercial aircraft are indeed meeting minimum shielding requirements and, ultimately, make the safety of tested aircraft more transparent.

“This will get everyone on the same page,” said Chriss Grosvenor, a NIST electronics engineer. “The FAA and aircraft manufacturers now have a lot of unbiased data they can look at, and our method is just another method to obtain that information,” he added.

The three aircraft chosen for the representative tests were a Boeing 737-200 and a Bombardier Global 5000 business jet, both owned by the FAA, and a Beechcraft Premier IA carbon-fiber composite business jet, owned by the Hawker-Beechcraft company.

By measuring all three aircraft and comparing the results, NIST was able to provide a guide for the optimization of HIRF testing standards for the EMC aircraft manufacturing community.

The tests were conducted over a two-year period using a commercial measurement system that incorporates NIST-developed ultra-wideband antennas, a network analyzer and an optical fiber link to obtain high-resolution measurements from the megahertz to gigahertz range. (ANI)

World’s first new DeBakey heart assist device implanted successfully

Washington, Aug 18 (ANI): In a revolutionary surgery, cardiac surgeons at Heidelberg University Hospital for the first time implanted the HeartAssist 5 ventricular assist device, the modern version of the DeBakey VAD in July this year.

The device augments the pumping function of the left ventricle in an especially effective, gentle, and quiet manner.

The pump weighs 92 grams, and is made of titanium and plastic. It pumps blood from the weakened or failed left ventricle into the aorta.

Professor Dr. Matthias Karck, Director of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Heidelberg, who headed the surgery, said: “Following the 3.5 hour surgery, the patient is doing fine.”

The 50-year-old woman suffered from heart failure that could not be effectively treated with medication.

Since a heart transplant was not an option due to medical reasons, the implanted heart pump will now assist her heart permanently.

“The heart pump can also be used as a bridge-to-transplant while the patient waits for a matching donor heart,” says Dr. Arjang Ruhparwar, senior registrar in the Department of Cardiac Surgery in Heidelberg.

When a donor heart becomes available, the pump and the diseased heart are both removed and replaced by the new donor heart.

The DeBakey VAD was first developed in the 1990s in cooperation with NASA by Professor Michael DeBakey, the renowned American cardiac surgeon at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, who died in 2008 at the age of 99.

The modern version of the device, the HeartAssist 5, is manufactured by US company MicroMed Cardiovascular and is considered to be a fifth generation VAD because it can be implanted adjacent to the heart and has an exclusive flow probe that provides direct, accurate measurement of blood flow from the left ventricle to the aorta.

The new miniature device is light, easy-to-handle and can be monitored and controlled externally.

“The new device has great advantages – at only 92 g, it is the smallest and lightest approved VAD in Europe that can completely replace the function of the left ventricle and it works very quietly and effectively with a high flow coefficient,” said Karck.

Thus, patients are able to live a nearly normal life at home. (ANI)

Lack of sunlight can cause ‘brain drain’ in depressed people

Washington, July 28 (ANI): Depressed people are less able to think clearly when there’s a short-term lack of sunlight, a new study has found.

Writing in BioMed Central’s open access journal Environmental Health, researchers used weather data from NASA satellites to measure sunlight exposure across the United States and linked this information to the prevalence of cognitive impairment in depressed people.

The team of US researchers, which was led by Shia Kent, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, used cross-sectional data from 14,474 people in the NIH-NINDS-funded REGARDS study, a longitudinal study investigating stroke incidence and risk factors, to study associations between depression, cognitive function and sunlight.

He said, “We found that among participants with depression, low exposure to sunlight was associated with a significantly higher predicted probability of cognitive impairment. This relationship remained significant after adjustment for season.

“This new finding that weather may not only affect mood, but also cognition, has significant implications for the treatment of depression, particularly seasonal affective disorder”.

Kent and his colleagues speculate that the physiological mechanisms that give rise to seasonal depression may also be involved in sunlight’s effect on cognitive function in the context of depressive symptoms.

Cognitive function was assessed by measurement of short-term recall and temporal orientation. As well as regulating the hormones serotonin and melatonin, light has been shown to also affect brain blood flow, which has in turn been linked with cognitive functions.

Award-winning device to revolutionise treatment of hand injuries

Washington, July 8 (ANI): Bioengineering students at Rice University have invented a device to measure intrinsic hand muscle strength, called PRIME, which could revolutionise the diagnosis and treatment of hand injuries and neurological disorders, specifically carpal tunnel syndrome.

The OrthoIntrinsics team behind the patent-pending creation have won first place and 10,000 dollars at IShow, an innovation competition for graduate and undergraduate students.

Graduates Caterina Kaffes, Matthew Miller, Neel Shah and Shuai “Steve” Xu invented PRIME, or Peg Restrained Intrinsic Muscle Evaluator, for their senior project.

“Twenty percent of all ER admissions are hand-related. Neuromuscular disorders like spinal cord injuries, Lou Gehrig’s, diabetes, multiple sclerosis-all these diseases affect the intrinsic hand muscles,” said Xu.

For starters, the team is focusing on carpal tunnel syndrome.

“U.S. surgeons will perform over 500,000 procedures for carpal tunnel this year. We spend $2 billion per year treating this disease but up to 20 percent of all surgeries need to be redone. Our invention can be used across the spectrum of care from diagnosis to outcome measurements,” said Xu.

Xu said that previous devices lacked the repeatability to be useful and did not adjust for small hands or unusual morphologies.

PRIME has three elements: a pegboard restraint, a force transducer enclosure and a PDA custom-programmed to capture measurements.

In a five-minute test, a doctor uses pegs to isolate a patient’s individual fingers.

“You wouldn’t think it works as well as it does, but once you are pegged in, you can’t move anything but the finger we want you to,” said Miller.

A loop is fitted around the finger, and when the patient moves it, and the researchers measure the amount of force generated.

“PRIME gets the peak forceThen the doctor can create a patient-specific file with all your information, time-stamped, and record every single measurement,” said Xu.

PRIME integrates with existing systems in a manner compliant with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, better known as HIPAA, he said.

According to Xu, it will help hospitals and rehabilitation clinics compare the effectiveness of surgical interventions and diagnose neuromuscular degenerative diseases. (ANI)

Cell phone towers can help predict the next big flood

Tel Aviv, July 7 (ANI): Researchers from Tel Aviv University, Israel, have said that they can predict the intensity of the next big flood by using common cell phone towers across the United States.

Their model, which analyzes cell phone signals, adds a critical component to weather forecasting never before available.

“By monitoring the specific and fluctuating atmospheric moisture around cell phone towers throughout America, we can cheaply, effectively and reliably provide a more accurate ‘critical moisture distribution’ level for fine-tuning model predictions of big floods,” said Professor Pinhas Alpert, a geophysicist and head of Tel Aviv University’s Porter School for Environmental Education.

Cell phone towers emit radio waves that are diminished by moisture in the air, a factor that can be used to improve model warnings on flood levels.

In addition, the researchers measured the rainfall distributions and were able to accurately estimate the size of impending floods before they struck.

This was demonstrated in post-analysis of two case-studies of floods in the Judean Desert in Israel, where cell phone towers and flash floods are abundant.

Using real data measurements collected from the towers, the researchers demonstrated how microwave links in a cellular network correlated with surface station humidity measurements.

The data provided by cell phone towers is the missing link weather forecasters need to improve the accuracy of flood forecasting.

“Our method provides reliable measurement of moisture fields near the flood zone for the first time,” said Professor Alpert. “This new tool can add to the bigger picture of understanding climate change patterns in general,” he added.

“Accurate predictions of flooding were difficult before because there haven’t been enough reliable measurements of moisture fields in remote locations,” Professor Alpert further added.

Using the signals collected from cell phone towers as they communicate with base stations and our handsets, weather forecasters will now have a crucial missing piece of information for flood prediction that they never had before.

It will permit forecasters and residents alike to more accurately gauge the danger they face from an impending flood. (ANI)

Space and robotics technology used to improve forest planning and harvesting

Washington, June 30 (ANI): Space and robotics technology have been combined to develop an advanced Precision Forestry Positioning System, which allows more efficient forest planning and harvesting.

Invented by researchers at the Institute of Man-Machine-Interaction at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, the system has helped catalogue 240 million single trees in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia. he system combines remote-sensing maps from airplanes with satellite navigation data to map each tree in a forest.

This information is then used to plan which trees are to be cut, and when.

Finally, the plan is used on harvesters to identify which trees to cut. This helps make the harvesting more efficient, optimises overall wood production and reduces costs.

The system won the North Rhine-Westphalia Region’s 2008 European Satellite Navigation Competition, which was supported by ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office.

“We already have one harvester in operation with our system onboard. As the prototype works well, we are fairly close to the stage where we can go into production. Another 6 to 12 months, and we should be there,” said Professor Dr Jurgen Rossmann from RWTH Aachen University, who developed the system together with Petra Krahwinkler, Arno Bucken and Dr Michael Schluse.

The objective of the Precision Forestry Positioning System is to automate and optimize all the work involved in foresting, from the early planning of the forest to the final cutting of single trees, in order to be competitive on the worldwide market, and to overcome efficiency problems related to the forest ownership structure of the region.

“Precision farming is important in today’s agriculture, where farmers can save money with the use of satellite navigation systems,” explained Arno Bucken.

“However, the accuracy of the GPS navigation system, which is of 20 to 30 m, is not enough to identify single trees in a forest. Much higher accuracy is needed,” he added.

“We found a solution to this problem, which increases the accuracy to 50 cm, by using GPS as the initial reference position, and then taking remote-sensing data to identify the single trees in the forest,” he explained.

To help the planning, a virtual computer-based forest has been developed with all trees being identified by their location, based on the GPS and remote-sensing data.
In addition, a fourth dimension, ‘time’, has been added, and is of the utmost importance for this system.

“All trees are not only known by their geo-coordinates, but they are also time-stamped, and all measurement data are archived.

This makes it possible to see ‘how trees grow’, as well as look back to learn from the past,” said Rossmann. (ANI)

Complications in previous pregnancies may affect health of next baby

Washington, June 29 (ANI): Dutch researchers say that complications early in pregnancy or in previous pregnancies can help predict further risk in current or subsequent pregnancies.

Dr Robbert van Oppenraaij, a medical doctor and PhD student in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Erasmus MC University Medical Centre (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), believes that the new findings may help predict more easily which women might need greater care and supervision during pregnancy.

“There were several interesting findings,” said the researcher.

“To name two: firstly, we found that after any first trimester complication or event, the risk of preterm or very preterm delivery is increased in the subsequent or ongoing pregnancy.

“Secondly, we found that increased risks of adverse obstetric outcome are, in all cases, related to the severity or recurrence, or both, of the first trimester complication or event,” he added.

The researchers have found that a history of one or more miscarriages nearly doubles the risk in an ongoing pregnancy of preterm premature rupture of the membrane that surrounds the baby in the womb.

It also increases the risk of premature or very premature delivery (earlier than 37 or 34 weeks respectively).

If a previous pregnancy had to be terminated for any reason, that may increase the risk of premature rupture of the membrane, premature and very premature delivery in subsequent pregnancies.

“While it is true that most conditions are difficult to prevent, with improved monitoring in high risk pregnancies it is possible to reduce perinatal or postnatal foetal complications,” Dr van Oppenraaij added.

For example, in pregnancies with increased risk of preterm or very preterm delivery or intrauterine growth restriction, extra ultrasonic measurement of the cervical length and foetal growth can provide a better prediction of pregnancies at risk and better therapeutic care can be given, such as bed rest, corticosteroids and monitoring of the baby’s heart beat.

“Events and complications in early pregnancy are amongst the most common complications in women during their pregnancy and can be extremely distressing for them,” van Oppenraaij added.

The findings were presented at 25th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam. (ANI)

Gene that makes colon cancer resistant to treatment identified

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Researchers have found that low levels of a particular gene make colon cancer patients resistant to celebrex treatment.

Lead researcher Dr Sanford Markowitz, the Markowitz-Ingalls Professor of Cancer Genetics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and an oncologist at the Ireland Cancer Center of University Hospitals Case Medical Centre said that individuals who have low expression of the gene 15-PGDH also called ‘Celebrex gene’ make individuals resistant to colon cancer treatment.

“These findings have two important practical implications,” said Markowitz, who is also an investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

“First, they suggest that measurement of 15-PGDH may identify which individuals are most likely to benefit from treatment with Celecoxib as a colon tumor preventative.

“Second, they suggest that identifying drugs that could increase 15-PGDH expression in the colon could be a potent new strategy for preventing development of tumours in the colon,” Markowitz added.

Previous studies by Markowitz had shown that the gene 15-PGDH is expressed by the normal colon and acts similarly to Celecoxib in preventing colon tumors by inhibiting the COX-2 pathway.

Another study led by Dr Monica Bertagnolli, at the Harvard Brigham and Women’s Hospital showed that with Celecoxib treatment, individuals who had previously developed colon adenomas cut the rate of developing new adenomas by one-third, and cut the rate of developing new large adenomas by two-thirds.

In the new study, the researchers sought to determine whether protection from colon tumors by Celecoxib actually require the joint action of both the drug and the 15-PGDH gene

They found that in mice that genetically lacked the gene 15-PGDH Celecoxib proved unable to prevent the development of colon tumors, suggesting that both the drug and the gene are needed to protect the colon from tumour development.
