Jaya Ho, says SP for Amar snub

Lucknow, May 27 — The Samajwadi Party (SP) sprang a surprise on Wednesday by re-nominating actress-turned politician Jaya Bachchan for next month’s Rajya Sabha elections from UP. The move is likely to further alienate former SP leader Amar Singh, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s one-time close aide. Singh was forced to leave the party, along with actress Jayaprada, in February. The announcement also reflects the changed equations between Singh and the Bach-chan family. Singh used to call himself the younger brother of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya’s superstar husband. He often stated the Bachchans were like family to him. When Singh left the SP, it was widely speculated Jaya would also go with him. But she remained with the SP, raising eyebrows. Jaya did support her political mentor in the days before he finally left the SP, but distanced herself later. In March, at a rally of Thakurs in New Delhi, Singh criticised her for staying with the party. This widened the rift between him and the Bachchans further.

Masood’s nomination is aimed at placating Muslim voters, who had deserted the SP when Yadav cosied up to his bete noire and former BJP leader Kalyan Singh in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

Pak Army between ‘devil and deep sea’ over US pressure to move into N.Waziristan

Washington, May 11 (ANI): Not only the civilian leadership, but the Pakistan Army too is facing the heat, as it is being pressed upon by the United States to extend its campaign against militants holed up in North Waziristan, following reports that Faisal Shahzad, the confessed Times Square bomber, had received terror training in that volatile region.

The United States has long been coaxing the Pakistan Army to launch an offensive in North Waziristan, however, the military has been reluctant to go into the region on the plea that it is already overstretched and lacks resources to open new fronts against the extremists in the troubled tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

“The army realizes that it must go into North Waziristan. They have been looking at this option for quite some time, but they have been hesitant as they are overstretched,” Time magazine quoted retired general and analyst Talat Masood, as saying.

“It”s a very complex area, particularly because there are elements there that are not so hostile to the Pakistani military,” Masood added referring to the Haqqani network, an al-Qaeda linked Afghan Taliban group, which targets US led international forces in Afghanistan, but is viewed as a strategic asset by Pakistan”s intelligence services.

“The army will prefer to take a limited operation, one that is confined to the Mehsud areas,” Masood said pointing towards the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) warlord Hakimullah Mehsud.

With the US sending some strong signals, it is being speculated that the Obama Administration might send troops to Pakistan to take on the militants themselves, a situation which could be catastrophic, said Aftab Sherpao, who served as Interior Minister in General Pervez Musharraf’s regime.

“The presence of U.S. troops would be truly disastrous. The mere presence of foreign soldiers would inflame public opinion to dangerous proportions, weakening the hand of the civilian government and the army,” Sherpao highlighted.

He explained that dismantling the terror safe havens flourishing in the tribal regions was not that easy a task as the US and the international community believes.

“It will take years,” Sherpao said adding, “You can”t start operations against all these groups simultaneously. You have to proceed step by step. You have to consolidate your gains first, then move on to the next target.”

But he also noted that the Times Square incident certainly served as a wake-up call for both the civilian and military set-up.

“The political and military leadership have to sit down now and devise a serious response.Otherwise, it will become very difficult,” Sherpao said. (ANI)

Pak Qaeda hand in 2006 trans-Atlantic bomb plot revealed

London, Sep.8 (ANI): New evidence put before a British jury during a retrial of three Brit Muslim convicts suggests that the men used code words to discuss their plans with an al-Qaeda fixer based in Pakistan.

The e-mails and conversations suggest that the plot was in its final stages, possibly days away from execution in 2006.

The seven daily flights highlighted by the three plotters were: 14.15 United Airlines Flight 931 to San Francisco; 15.00 Air Canada Flight 849 to Toronto; 15.15 Air Canada Flight 865 to Montreal; 15.40 United Airlines Flight 959 to Chicago; 16.20 United Airlines Flight 925 to Washington; 16.35 American Airlines Flight 131 to New York; 16.50 American Airlines Flight 91 to Chicago.

According to The Telegraph and the Daily Express, the batteries the gang planned to use as part of their detonators were bought in Pakistan.

An ingredient in the bomb mix was the orange soft drink Tang – sold in Pakistan – which had a high sugar content to aid the explosion.

A British intelligence source said: “The use of drink bottles sold in Pakistan and batteries sold in Pakistan underline the plot’s ties to that country. The foot soldiers were from Britain – but the organisers were in Pakistan.”

A security source said of the conspiracy: “It was very clever and the airport scanners would not have picked up the devices at all.”

Prosecutor Peter Wright told the Woolwich Crown Court in South East London how the would-be bombers were “a cell of home-grown terrorists activated and directed by a designated leader in Pakistan.”

That was confirmed by a government source in Pakistan, who said the plot was believed to have originated “with al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.”

Seized e-mails showed the chain of terror stretched from there, across the lawless border to Pakistan, to London and to the woods of High Wycombe where explosives were buried.

The aim was to mirror the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, which killed 259 passengers and 11 in the Scottish town.

Aliases exposed during the trial revealed the terror kingpin in Pakistan was dubbed “Paps” or “Papa”.

Ali called himself Imran and Chacha and also set up email accounts in the bogus names Tippu Khan and Jameel Masood.

His co-conspirators used aliases such as Fatty, Arro and Nigga.

Hydrogen peroxide was known as “aftershave”, police surveillance as “skin problems” and martyrdom videos were referred to as “wedding tapes”.

It is also thought that the bomb makers received training at an al-Qaeda camp in Pakistan.

A mystery Pakistani, thought to be a top al-Qaeda envoy, made contact with the three would-be suicide bombers during a flying visit to Britain in June 2006.

Experts who tested the explosive mix on the aircraft were horrified.

A witness said: “It was absolutely devastating.” (ANI)

Lahoris to have Hollywood, Bollywood film feast for Eid

Islamabad, August 29 (ANI): Cinemas across Punjab, Pakistan, are set to screen Indian and American movies on the upcoming occasion of Eid after local films were said to have failed to attract the audience.

Lollywood will reportedly come out with just three films while most of the cinemas in the country would offer three new Bollywood and two Hollywood films.

Nadeem Mandviwalla, renowned film promoter and director DHA Cinema, confirmed the DHA Cinema would run ‘G I Joe’, ‘Wanted’ and ‘Dil Bole Haddipa’ on the festive occasion.

But apparently, not all hope was said to be lost with few cinemas looking to present a local Punjabi film ‘Nach K Yaar Manana’ directed by Masood Butt.(ANI)

Former IB chief claims operation ‘Midnight Jackal’ launched to dislodge Benazir Govt.

Lahore, Aug.28 (ANI): Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz has said that the ‘Operation Midnight Jackal’ was targeted at dislodging the Benazir Bhutto government.

In an interview with a private television channel, Brigadier Imtiaz disclosed that the then Army Chief General Aslam Beg had hatched the conspiracy to destabilize the Bhutto government, as he believed that its policies were contrary to those of the Army.

He claimed that the day Bhutto assumed charge, General Beg and the then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan started discussing the possibility of replacing her.

Imtiaz said his failure to refuse to obey General Beg’s orders led to his retirement from the Armed Forces.

The Daily Times quoted him, as saying that President Ghulam Ishaq had offered him to join his ‘gang’ and offered him privileges.

When asked that why he maintained silence over the conspiracy despite knowing so much, Imtiaz said he did not wanted to defame his institution.

Brigadier Imtiaz along with Former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) operative Major Amir had allegedly conspired with other political leaders to bring down the first Benazir Bhutto government in 1989.

Both the ISI operatives had launched an operation ‘Midnight Jackal’ to make the then PPP Members of National Assembly (MNA) support a no-confidence motion against their own prime minister (Benazir Bhutto).

The then Director-General of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau, Masood Sharif Khattak has also said that both Major Amir and Brigadier Imtiaz were caught on videotapes persuading PPP MNA’s to topple the government. (ANI)

Ex-spy says former Pak IB chief wanted to file high treason cases against Benazir, two others

Islamabad, Aug.28 (ANI): After the recent outbursts of Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz, another officer of Pakistan’s intelligence services has revealed that the former IB director-general had planned to register high treason cases against Benazir Bhutto, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Salmaan Taseer and Masood Sharif.

Rana Abdul Baqi, who had served under former IB director-general Masood Sharif and retired as senior director, in an exclusive interview with The News, disclosed that Brigadier Imtiaz wanted to try Benazir Bhutto and three others because they leaked secret tapes to an Indian journalist and got it published in India Today.

According to Baqi, the tapes which were leaked contained conversations between MNAs and Brigadier Imtiaz and Major Amir, and also included classified information about training camps of the Army and other strategic security information which may still be classified.

“In 1991, after completing medical leave, I reported at the IB headquarters and started waiting for my next posting, as I was previously working as personal staff officer to IB director-general Masood Sharif. One day, Brigadier Imtiaz called me in his office because he was upset with the episode of Salmaan Taseer, who had conducted a press conference against the architects of ‘Operation Midnight Jackal’ and India Today had also published some extracts of those secret tapes. The brigadier asked me how did Salmaan Taseer get those tapes? “He (Taseer) is an agent of RAW and India Today got those tapes through Taseer.” “Brigadier Imtiaz alleged according to his information Taseer got those tapes through me.”

“According to my sources, Masood Sharif and Benazir Bhutto got those tapes from you,” Brigadier Imtiaz blamed me, adding: “Benazir Bhutto gave those tapes to Taseer.” Imtiaz added apart from Benazir Bhutto and Salmaan Taseer, Aitzaz Ahsan was also present there and in his presence these tapes were handed over to Taseer.

“I want to initiate high treason case against these four because they have handed over classified national secrets to India and you (Rana Abdul Baqi) would become approver in the case and you would admit that these secret tapes were handed over to Taseer in your presence.

“I told Brig Imtiaz that I do not know Benazir Bhutto, Aitzaz Ahsan and Salmaan Taseer personally and I can not give any sort of false evidence. I was offered promotion by Brig Imtiaz and upon my refusal I was threatened of severe consequences and an inquiry was lodged against me and I was accused of leaking those secret tapes.”

“I told Brig Imtiaz that three sets of these tapes were prepared each containing 12 cassettes. One was sent to the Military Intelligence director-general; one to the Prime Minister Secretariat and the third was kept in IB director-general’s office. I don’t know how Taseer got those tapes. Brig Imtiaz constituted a committee to discuss my involvement in handing those tapes to Taseer.

Brig Imtiaz’s committee comprised Air Commodore Khalilullah Ghauri, Col Bashir Wali, who has remained IB director-general and Major Salim Khan.

The committee inquired from me and I gave a ten-page reply on how these tapes were distributed. The Army men took the last copy of these cassettes which was at IB director-general’s office and a receipt was also given of that episode.

“The committee exonerated me after getting satisfactory answers. Commodore Khalilur Rehman Ghauri told me Brig Imtiaz wanted to initiate high treason cases against Benazir Bhutto, Aitzaz Ahsan and Masood Sharif. I was asked to be careful as Brig Imtiaz could be dangerous. I only said I will not give any false evidence.” (ANI)

China cites technical hitches for not supporting ban on Jaish.

New Delhi, Aug.13 (ANI): China continues to remain reluctant about supporting India’s proposal at the United Nations to place sanctions on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

ANI has learnt that in the recent meeting between the Special Representatives of the two countries led by National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo, the Chinese Representative cited “technical” reasons for not supporting the ban on the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

China is the only country in the Security Council which is blocking sanctions on the Jaish and its chief Maulana Masood Azhar.

New Delhi’s argument has been that Azhar benefited from a terror act – the hijacking of IC 814 – and, therefore, there can be no objections on the grounds of evidence.

According to sources, during the 13th round of Special Representatives talks in New Delhi, India handed over more details and documents about Azhar which establish that he is a terrorist.

Beijing’s response, however, was tepid.

India has already submitted detailed documents on the Jaish-e-Mohammad’s terrorist activities to the United Nations, which in turn has been circulated to other nations, including China.

Beijing, however, has been denial mode about receiving the document.

The Maulana Masood Azhar led Jaish-e-Mohammed is a Pakistan based terrorist organization which has orchestrated series of attacks against India.

Once sanctions on an individual or the origination are imposed under UN resolution 1267 which is also known as Al qaeeda and Taliban sanctions, it empowers India to demand action from Pakistan.

After being released from the Indian jail, Masood has been seen in various Pakistani cities addressing huge congregations and is reportedly living undercover within the patronage of the ISI.

Security experts believe that Pakistan is using its close tactical and strategic relations with China to block India’s attempts in the UNSC to ban the Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Earlier, the United Kingdom had shown reluctance to support the ban on the Jaish, but once India submitted details about the group, it agreed to come onboard and support the ban. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

‘Hu Jintao’s absence from G8 will be a big setback’

L’Aquila (Italy), July 8 (ANI): Taking a serious note of the absence of the Chinese president at the G8 summit, Indian officials believe that Hu Jintao’s absence during the summit will be a big setback to the G5 outreach nations.

Jintao has cut short his visit and have rushed back following a ethnic conflict in Xinjiang province where more than 150 people are reportedly killed in a ethnic conflict.

Indian officials are of the view that it is extremely serious that the Chinese President had to rush ack for such a reason despite the presence of Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.

Although G8+G5 is not a negotiation forum but is an important fora to build a consensus on key issues like the climate change, food security and democratization of international institutions.

The emerging economies have actually drawn near consensus on most of the issues. India believes that the absence of Chinese President in the summit will weaken its case especially on the pesky issues like cutting down carbon emissions and green technologies.

Declining to comment on the situation in China certain sections of Indian officials say that so far China has remained a mute spectator to Pakistan sponsored insurgency against India and in fact has supported them by blocking the sanctioning of Jaish-e-Mohamed chief Maulana Masood Azhar. Pak Police poorly trained, ill equipped to handle Taliban onslaught

Islamabad, July 6 (ANI): The Pakistani police force is underpaid, poorly trained and ill-equipped to handle the Taliban onslaught, as the army drives them from their strongholds in Swat and surrounding areas.

Experts say the Taliban has now stepped up their attacks on the police because they find them far easier targets than the military, which has employed helicopter gunships, tanks and heavy artillery to push the Taliban out of Swat.

Talat Masood, a military analyst, said the government had been slow to train and equip the police for a wave of attacks.

“The police in this situation are not trained, equipped or geared to fight insurgency,” said Malik Naveed Khan, the Inspector General of the NWFP police.

“It’s a very serious war. You’re fighting the shadows of an invisible army,” the Chicago Tribune quoted Khan, as saying.

“For a force of 50,000, Khan’s department has 7,500 bullet proof vests and 17,000 automatic rifles. The department lacks explosives-detection equipment, a computerised fingerprint database and updated ballistic lab equipment,” the paper reported.

The microscopes that technicians use to conduct ballistics examinations, Khan said, “are the same ones used in high schools.”

“The department has 12 armoured personnel carriers, only three of which function. They are Russian-made and from the 1960s. They’re so old that we have to put a mechanic inside while they run. Every 3 kilometres, they break down,” Khan said.

Sub-Inspector Naseem Hayat said that he is fighting a war he knows police should not be asked to. With a handful of officers, he spends his days and nights opening car trunks, never knowing whether the next vehicle that pulls up is the one primed to explode.

“We are on the front lines. We know this is not our job. But we have been ordered to do this, to check every vehicle. That’s why we do it,” he said.

The Taliban focuses its sights on police stations and checkpoints; police commanders know it takes more than fighting spirit to fend off the terrorists. (ANI)

Don’t fool people by claiming “premature”success in Swat operation : former PAF official

Islamabad, July 1 (ANI): While the Pakistan government has been claiming that the Swat military offensive has been successful and nearing its end, a former Pakistan Air Force (PAF) top official, Air Marshal (retired) Masood Akhter has raised questions over the claims by saying that people shouldn’t be fooled through such statements.

During a discussion on ‘Post-Swat Operation Outlook’ here, Akhter said people should not hope that the war against terrorism and the extremist threat would end within a few weeks.

“We shouldn’t befool people by saying war against militancy will end within a few weeks. The army is rendering sacrifices there and we must support it but it’ll take some time to completely defeat these elements,” The Daily Times quoted Akhter, as saying.

Akhter said the military offensive in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) would continue until militants are rooted out from region, and added that it was in Pakistan’s interest to quell extremism.

“It’s our war because it threatens our vital national interest and our moderate way of life, and the non-state actors are also threatening all of us,” he added.

Akhter highlighted that the government’s work should not be limited to flushing out of the militants, but it should also cover the post-war scenario.

“The government should socially and ideologically isolate adversaries, sever links between local terrorists and international jihadis, and wean people away from religious extremism,” he said. (ANI)

Indian and Pakistan border forces celebrate Chamliyal Mela

Chamliyal (J-K), June 26 (ANI): Indian and Pakistani para-military troops guarding the borders joined thousands of devotees at the annual religious fair held at the Dargah (mausoleum) of Baba Dalip Singh Manhas near the border village of Chamliyal village in Jammu region on Thursday.

This annual fair was discontinued following the attack on Indian Parliament in December, 2001 and later revived in 2004 as a part of the peace initiative mooted by the two.

Thousands of devotees including many from Pakistan took part in the fair.

Officers and other personnel of Pakistani Rangers crossed the border to offer ‘Chaddar’ at the shrine. And in the process, the Border Security Force (BSF) officials played hosts to their Pakistan counterparts, giving them handful of soil from the shrine which happens to be a part of the tradition, practised since many years.

A high ranking officer of the Pakistan Rangers who took part in the fair termed the event as stepping stone in bridging the divide between the two nations – Pakistan and India.

“Certainly, this is a step forward to enhance the mutual co-operation, trust and understanding between the two security forces. And we are looking forward to have more interaction, more exchange of views with the BSF officials,” said Brigadier Masood, Pakistan Rangers.

The pilgrims were happy with the opportunity to interact with people from across the border.

“A hostile environment was created between the two countries due to militancy. A good message is spreading from here as people from both the countries are interacting. The message is that people residing in both the countries they want peace, brotherhood and solace,” said Mohammad Hussain, a devotee from Lahore.

Reportedly, this festival dates back to more than 300 years and it takes place at two spots, 600 yards apart, one being at Chamliyal on the Indian side and the other being at Saidanwali in Pakistan.

According to folklore Dalip Singh Manhas, a pious person, was returning home when he was assaulted by some criminals and beheaded. His body fell in Saidanwali village (now in Pakistan) and his head in Chamliyal.

One of his disciples suffering from an incurable skin ailment had a vision of Baba telling him that the soil where his (Baba’s) body had fallen had medicinal value. Baba then advised him to mix the soil with water and apply it over the affected parts.

The disciple tried it and was cured. As news spread, people began thronging this place and turned it into a holy shrine.

Since then, believers follow the ritual of applying the soil of Chamliyal referred as ‘Shakkar’ (surgar) and ‘Sharbat’ (water) on their bodies. (ANI)

Pak Army ahead of schedule in Swat operation, claims official

Peshawar, May 27 (ANI): The Pakistan Army has claimed that its offensive against the Taliban and other extremists in the Swat Valley is ahead of schedule as troops have forced the extremists back and have confined them to a very small area.

“Operation Rah-e-Rast is ahead of schedule and is forcing the Taliban to give up mentally and psychologically,” Peshawar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Masood Aslam said.

He, however, did not revealed the exact time when the military operation in Swat and surrounding areas would be discontinued.

Lieutenant General Aslam also claimed that cracks have emerged among top Taliban commanders, and they are complaining against other.

“There is bickering among the commanders as one is complaining against the other for not sending reinforcements. We believe they could be betraying each other,” The Daily Times quoted Lieutenant General Aslam, as saying.

Officials also claimed that differences have also creeped among the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud and his ranks.

“Not only the TTP was experiencing differences in its ranks but its leader was also facing another serious problem with a tribal commander Qari Zainuddin challenging his absolute writ in the Mehsud area of South Waziristan,” an official said. (ANI)

Pak Mumbai attack suspect confesses providing logistical support to attackers

Rawalpindi, Apr.16 (ANI): One of the arrested suspects of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks, Shahid Jamil Riaz, has reportedly confessed to his involvement in providing logistic support to the attackers.

According to The Daily Times, Riaz’s statement was recorded by the Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Masood Janjua.

“Riaz’s statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Pakistan Penal Code, in which he confessed that he and his four accomplices, Hammad Amin Sadiq, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Abdul Wajid alias Zarar Shah and Mazhar Iqbal alias Abu Al Qama, assisted the Mumbai attackers and provided them logistic support to carry out the attacks,” sources said.

Riaz, a member of the banned terror outfit Lashkr-e-Taiyaba (LeT) was arrested by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) last month.

However, Riaz’s counsel said that the court refused to record his client’s confession statement. (ANI)

Congress claims NDA paid five crore dollars to end Kandahar hijacking

Mumbai, Apr.15 (ANI): Congress leader Rajiv Shukla has claimed that the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government paid five crore US dollars to end the 1999 hijack of an Indian Airlines plane in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in January 2000.

Shukla claimed that the amount was paid to Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist Maulana Azhar Masood in exchange for the nearly 200 passengers taken hostage in December 1999.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, All India Congress Committee spokesman Rajiv Shukla said: “Was (Gujarat CM) Narendra Modi aware of the release of Maulana Azhar Masood and Jaswant Singh accompanying him with a booty of five crore US dollars?”

He alleged Masood used the money to set up the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group and armed it to attack Parliament, Askhardham and Raghunath temples. hukla asked Modi if he approved of senior BJP leader L. K. Advani going to the mazar of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, which no Congress leader ever visited, and “prostrating before it and calling him a secular leader and a great visionary”.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javdekar denied knowledge about any money given to the terrorists as alleged by Shukla.

He also rubbished Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that there were 28 prisoners on death row and Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s number was 22.

“There is no queue for death row. He (Afzal) should be immediately hanged. Afzal Guru’s trial and conviction was expedited due to POTA,” Javdekar said. (ANI with inputs)

Election observers enjoy state-sponsored boat cruise, dinner

Panaji, April 9 (IANS) Three election observers, deputed by the Election Commission to ensure free and impartial polls in Goa, were treated to a complimentary boat cruise and dinner by state tourism department last weekend, sources said Thursday, though one observer said he knew nothing about it while another denied being on the junket.

The trip, on board the state-run cruise boat Santa Monica, for the three observers Chanchal Tewari (Indian Administrative Service), Masood Hassan (Indian Administrative Service) and T.C. Jose (Indian Revenue Service) and their liaison officer M. Olwatt April 4, has kicked off a storm with terse noting being exchanged between the state tourism department, which initiated the junket, and the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) which is now dithering from footing the bill.

When contacted, Tewari said that he ‘does not know anything about this’. Hassan, on the other hand, denied being a part of the junket. ‘You better clarify this with the tourism department,’ he said.

Tourism department sources told IANS that the request for the junket for the three officials came from deputy director in the tourism department Pamela Mascarenhas, who called up the assistant manager at Santa Monica booking counter asking him to arrange a complimentary dinner and cruise.

‘We do not give such complimentary tickets until the managing director of GTDC Benjamin Braganza clears it. But being a weekend he could not be contacted. So complimentary passes were given to the observers and their liaison officer,’ a source said.

On Monday, however, the managing director in his noting said that the GTDC would not foot the bill and it would have to be paid by the tourism department.

‘The act is highly objectionable and inappropriate, more so because the officials are attached to the Election Commission in Goa to conduct free and impartial polls,’ the managing director’s note reads. IANS has a copy of the note.

A copy of the note has also been forwarded to the Election Commission.

Deputy Election Officer P.S. Meena, who wrote the letter to the GTDC chief seeking the complimentary passes, has been relieved of election duties, though a senior official said this was because he had some ‘urgent family work’.

The three observers were appointed to Goa by the Election Commission from a pool of senior bureaucrats to oversee the election process and ensure that the poll exercise is fair and impartial.

In the past, the apex court has taken serious view of state government funds being used for the entertainment of election observers, as it ‘would have serious impact on the impartiality of such observers’.

‘This should be taken care of by the Election Commission and strict instructions should be given to observers not to accept undue hospitality of states because that would unnecessarily compromise their objectivity and transparency,’ the Supreme court had said in a 2005 ruling.

Former ISI ‘Midnight Jackal’ operative’s secret trysts with Zardari revealed

Islamabad, Apr.9 (ANI): Former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) operative Major Amir has reportedly developed close ties with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and other top leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Sources said that Major Amir has met President Zardari several times in the recent past, and also accompanied him to Saudi Arabia in November last year.

Interestingly, Major Amir is the same man who along with Brigadier Imtiaz had allegedly conspired with other political leaders to bring down the first Benazir Bhutto government in 1989.

Pakistan’s presidential spokesperson, Farhatullah Babar, has, however, denied reports of meetings between Major Amir and President Zardari.

“I have never seen Major Amir in the Presidency during my stay. Moreover, I have not seen his name in any of the scheduled meetings of the president,” Dawn quoted Babar, as saying.

He failed to reply to queries as to why Major Amir accompanied Zardari on his entourage to Saudi Arabia. (ANI)
