“FlashForward,” NBC medical dramas face ax

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – After returning from a four-month hiatus, a pair of ABC sci-fi dramas face diverging hopes of renewal.

Entertainment | Television | Media

“FlashForward” is considered highly unlikely to get a second season, as its ratings have dropped below the 2.0 threshold in the key adults 18-49 demographic on Thursdays.

After its midseason premiere last week, “V” remains uncertain, but if it can maintain its current ratings level, the show’s evil reptiles will most likely invade ABC next season.

On NBC, “Heroes” is the network’s biggest question mark, with the Peacock strongly considering a final-season order. “Chuck” is less of a mystery, but the network is more optimistic this year than last. If freshman drama “Parenthood” can remain stable in the coming weeks, NBC likely will give the series another shot in the fall.

“Law & Order,” now in its 19th season, is costly and modestly rated — the two most common causes of death for older shows — but NBC will find it tough to resist the lure of making “L&O” the longest-running drama series in history.

NBC’s medical dramas are another story. “Trauma” is headed to the morgue, and “Mercy” is on life support. NBC keeps pulling for “Mercy” to succeed and feels the show has creatively improved, but its numbers are below the line.

NBC’s other game show, “The Marriage Ref,” is considered a lock for a pickup. Although its ratings have slipped a fair amount, the Jerry Seinfeld-produced advice show has performed solidly for an unscripted program in a tough time Thursday period.

Fox, which recently canceled “24,” has only a couple of “bubble” shows that could go either way: “Human Target” and the new comedy “Sons of Tucson.” “Target” has managed to win a humble Wednesday time period with an equally humble number. But the network likes the show, and its ratings have appeared to stabilize at a level Fox finds acceptable for its slot. Like most live-action comedies put into Fox’s Sunday animated lineup, “Tucson” has struggled to gain traction and is considered a long shot for a comeback.

For a network with few slots to fill, CBS has plenty of bubble shows: “Cold Case,” “Numbers,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “Medium,” “Accidentally on Purpose,” “Gary Unmarried” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”

This group is tougher to prognosticate as all the shows are fairly stable in the ratings, and CBS pilots will play a heavy deciding role. “Numbers” and “Cold Case” are considered the least likely to return among the dramas, with “Old Christine” the most likely renewal on the comedy side.

On the CW, veteran “One Tree Hill” and freshman “Life Unexpected” are duking it out for a presumed single slot on next season’s schedule, with the former tending to pull stronger ratings but the latter a less expensive show.

Pak inks 220-million-dollar satellite deal with China

Islamabad, Sep. 19 (ANI): Pakistan has signed an agreement with China to provide a 220-million-dollar financial grant to help the Islamic country launch a communication satellite.

The operational life of Pakistan’s existing satellite PAKSAT-1 will be over in November 2011.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui and Pakistan’s Economic Affairs Secretary Farrukh Qayyum signed the contract.

“China has agreed to fund the project through a soft loan with low mark up for a period of 20 years,” the Daily Times quoted Qayyum, as saying.

The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Organisation (SUPARCO) and the China Great Wall Industry Corporation have agreed to develop the new satellite PAKSAT-1R, which would replace PAKSAT-1 in September 2011, he added.

The satellite will support all conventional and modern fixed satellite service (FSS) applications.

The satellite will have 30 transponders, 18 in the Ku-band and 12 in C-band (ANI)

Katona’s ‘hubby wants to leak couple’s sex tape on net to ease cash crisis’

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Already troubled Kerry Katona fears getting into more mess as hubby Mark Croft wants to sell off a steamy sex tape of the couple to alleviate their cash crunch, it has emerged.

Pals say Katona’s former taxi driver hubby tried to sell the idea to her, which has made the ex-Atomic Kitten even more anxious about losing the custody of her two daughters, Molly and Lilly Sue, to their father and divorced hubby Brian Nicholas McFadden.

“Mark’s not given up hope by any means. He thinks it’s a guaranteed earner, which could make them anything up to half-a-million,” a pal was quoted by the Daily Star, as saying.

Friends say the 39-year old Croft has no plans to change his mind and he intends to use the cash from the tape’s sale to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

A friend said: “Mark thinks he knows it all and is determined to take over every aspect of Kerry’s life. He thinks that a sex tape of them, which somehow found its way on to the internet, would earn them a lot of cash – at least 250,000 pounds and possibly as much as 500,000 pounds.

“Mark is absolutely obsessed with money and has told Kerry that it could be a life-saver for them, but at the moment she’s having nothing to do with it.

“She’s scared stiff of anything so tacky being the last stop in her attempts to hold on to her two little girls by Brian McFadden.” (ANI)

Facebook crosses 300m users mark, cites rapid growth in profits

London, September 16 (ANI): Facebook has announced that it has crossed a benchmark of 300 million active monthly users from across the world and also started raking in profits ahead of schedule.

Founder of the world’s largest social networking site Mark Zuckerberg said the company had not expected to begin reaping financial benefits until sometime next year.

“This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term,” The BBC quoted Zuckerberg as saying in a blog post.

“We are succeeding at building Facebook in a sustainable way. We are just getting started on our goal of connecting everyone.

“We face a lot of fun and important challenges that require rethinking the current systems for enabling information flow across the web,” he added.

Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s vice president of engineering, also said: “Passing these milestones to me means we can continue to fund our development and our innovation and be self sustaining as we grow this network.

“We think 300m is a just a step on the way to get as much of the entire world on the social network communicating with the friends and family and the people they want to communicate with.”

Nick O’Neill of AllFacebook.com added: “That Facebook is able to continue this growth and build a “cash flow positive” business is an impressive feat.

“If the company can cover the cost of scaling to 1 billion users and still manage to break even, there’s no doubt that the company will have a great opportunity to rake in billions.”

The news that the company had crossed the two benchmarks was made at TechCrunch 50 in San Francisco. (ANI)

Humans can’t run 100m faster than 9.2 seconds, claims expert

London, Sept 6 (ANI): Usain Bolt believes he can race past the 100 m sprint finish line in 9.4 seconds, and experts seem to agree with him. However, if the time limit is compressed to 9.2-second mark, analysts cast doubts.

Raphael Brandon, of the English Institute of Sport, believes the 6 feet 5 inches tall Bolt can inspire athletes of a similar built on the track, which would further bring down the time for the finish.

However, he points out that running faster means sprinters have to have their feet on the ground for a certain time in order to generate the speed.

The BBC quoted Brandon as saying: “I think there will come a point where to run any faster you will have to spend so little time on the ground that you won’t actually be able to generate the speed.”

Brandon thinks its unlikely someone would get past the 9.2 seconds barrier, but also confesses that such limits had been drawn in the past only to have been broken. (ANI)

PAF using unmanned drones in war exercise

Islamabad, Sep.5 (ANI): The Pakistan Air Force (PAF), for the first time, is using unmanned UAV drone planes in its ongoing annual war exercise in Sargodha.

The focus of the drill named ‘Saffron Bandit 2009-10′ is to train fighter pilots in counter insurgency operations and carrying out precision attacks on militant hideouts.

Briefing media persons about the exercise at the Air Force Headquarters, Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Hasan said the drills were aimed at training the PAF for operations against the terrorists.

“PAF is employing for the first time in the recent drills pilotless UAV drone planes to target the enemies. It was due to the precision of PAF planning that common people were not among the casualties,” Air Vice Marshal Hasan said.

Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman also inspected the drill, The News reports.

Air Vice Marshal Hasan also informed that a joint military exercise, Exercise High Mark 2010, involving both the Army and the Air Force would be held next year. (ANI)

PCB chief miscalculated on ICC compensation package to Pak

Lahore, Sep 1 (ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt was off the mark when he claimed last week that Pakistan would receive around Rs 1.5 billion (18 million dollars) from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after settling its 2011 World Cup dispute with the game’s governing body.

“The PCB stands to gain about Rs.1 billion (12 million dollars) from its deal with the ICC that was struck in Dubai last week,” sources said.

The settlement between the ICC and the PCB was reached following a meeting between ICC president David Morgan and Ijaz in Dubai last Wednesday.

Sources said Ijaz quoted that figure under pressure from the newsmen, who were surprised when Ijaz initially said that Pakistan would get Rs 1 billion from the deal.

“Rs 1 billion is only slightly higher than the amount of 10.5 million dollars which Pakistan would have got in any case as hosting fees for 14 of its World Cup matches,”the Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

Before making the deal with the ICC, Ijaz had claimed that Pakistan would get a substantial compensation for settling its court case with the ICC over the staging of the World Cup.

The PCB had issued a legal notice to the ICC early this summer after the game’s governing body moved Pakistan’s share of matches out of the country because of security concerns. (ANI)

Students gift house to teacher as mark of respect

Namakkal (Tamil Nadu), Aug 31 (ANI): In a unique and loving gesture, students presented a house to their former teacher at Gurusamypalayam village in Tamil Nadu.

Eighty-three-year-old Soballapuram V Venkataraman, who has been living in a rented run-down house at the village in Namakkal district even after 25 years of retirement with his aged wife and a widowed daughter, will now have a new place to live.

Venkataraman will soon shift into the new house, which is spacious and much larger than his present accommodation.

The house, built in an area of 1,200 square feet, is nearly ready and will be formally gifted to the guru on the ‘Teachers’ Day’ on September 5.

Venkataraman says even though his students have been successful in life he never ever expected anything like this from them. He recalls he never complained about his financial problem to them. However, he said he was overwhelmed by this gesture.

“I have been teaching from 1954 to 1985 for 32 years. And during the course of my teaching profession, I have taught about nearly 1,500 students. Many of them are now working as industrialists, doctors, engineers, senior administrative officers,” said Venkataraman.

Venkataraman taught Tamil language at the Sengunthar Mahajana Higher Secondary School at Gurusamypalayam village and inspired many of his students with his knowledge of poetry and oratory.

Two years ago when his former students came to meet him, they were sad to know about his living conditions, and the financial debt he incurred for the marriage of his two daughters.

Even though he receives a monthly pension of Rs.9,000, it’s inadequate to meet the daily expenses of his family, let alone living a better life.

The students who had achieved success and made it in their professional life decided to alleviate their loving teacher’s suffering in their own unique way.

“We took up a list of our old students, we collected their addresses, and we printed a small notice and sent it to them. The old students responded and we were able to collect nearly 10 lakh. We constructed this house. We are very much pleased to hand over this house as ‘Guru Niwas’ to our teacher as a ‘gurudakshina’,” said Dr Mohan Raj, a physician and former student of Venkataraman.

Money was sent by students who are now settled in various parts of the country. It took two years to build a two-storey house at the cost of Rs 10 lakh. By Jai Kumar (ANI)

2,500-pound machine strapped around Flintoof’s knee to save his cricket career

London, Aug 30 (ANI): England all rounder Andrew Flintoff is praying that the 2,500 pound machine strapped around his knee will save his cricket career.

The Lancashire all-rounder has to strap himself to the contraption for eight hours every day as he starts his gruelling rehabilitation from his latest operation.

The state-of-the-art Continuous Passive Motion equipment was prescribed by surgeon Andy Williams and is designed to bend the 31-year-old Ashes hero’s knee up to 1,500 times a day, News of the World reported.

“I had a choice of either using this machine or doing three sets of 500 knee bends a day, so I thought the machine might be the way forward. I strap my leg into it for eight hours a day. It bends my knee up and down all the time and makes sure the movement is controlled,” Flintoff revealed.

“I will have the machine on most of the time, even when I’m sleeping. The hard part is getting used to having your leg strapped into a machine for most of the day. It’s designed to help with the healing but, inevitably, my right leg is going to waste away a bit and the muscles are going to disappear. There’s not a lot I can do about it because I can’t bear any weight on my right leg for six to eight weeks.”

Flintoff underwent keyhole surgery in London on Monday night – just a day after helping England beat Australia at the Oval to regain the Ashes.

It was the second op on his troublesome knee and the ninth of his career, following four on his left ankle, two for hernias and another on his back.

Flintoff announced his retirement from Test cricket during the Ashes after admitting his 16-stone body could no longer cope with five-day cricket.

“I have set myself a target of returning for the tour to Bangladesh, which is from mid-Febuary to the middle of March, but whether that’s realistic or not, I’m not sure,” admitted Flintoff.

“There is a possibility I may not play again. It’s something I’m going to have to be prepared for in case the operation is not as successful as I hope. There will be a question mark in my mind about whether I have played my last game until I know how the operation has turned out.

“I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t crossed my mind, but the success rate for an operation like this is pretty good,” the paper quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Britney went on tour to avoid $100m loss: Book

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Britney Spears was forced to hit the road just months after a public breakdown because she faced financial ruin, says the author of a new book.

Best-selling author and journalist Steven Dennis claims in a new book, ‘Britney: Inside The Dream’, that she stood to lose as much as 100 million dollars if she failed to honor the tour commitments that she made prior to her meltdown.

Dennis spent six months writing and researching the book, reports the Daily Express.

Robert Baker, the studio director at the Millenium Dance Complex where Britney regularly trains, told him: “If Britney didn’t go on tour she could have been hit for 100 million dollars because she was contractually obliged for another album and another tour and there was a deadline.

“The whole contract was set up and a timetable was in place before Britney had her meltdown.

“Had she quit and walked away then the recouped advances, penalties and accrued interest would have been near the 100-million-dollar mark – for someone estimated to be worth just 60 million dollars to 65 million dollars.”

Since announcing her world tour, critics have voiced their concerns that Britney was taking part in a gruelling nine-month world tour at a time when she remained mentally vulnerable.

Legally, she has been under the control of her father since February because of her mental problems.

Dennis adds, however: “I think the chief reason behind her tour was to protect Britney – firstly, to return her to an identity and routine in which she felt safe and secondly to safeguard her financially.” (ANI)

Theo Walcott shines in Nike TV ad

London, Aug. 28 (ANI): Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is the latest Premier League star to feature in Nike’s “Make The Difference” campaign.

Walcott is seen recreating some of his favourite moves around a deserted Emirates stadium in this short which is subtitled: “Fast is not enough,” reports The Sun.

The voiceover picks up the story: “Fast is good, people take notice, but blistering pace is something different. You could stop when they have done ‘enough’ and go no further, satisfied with being just another name on the team sheet. Others aim to be the opposition’s worst nightmare, electric pace that strikes fear into the heart of defenders, making your mark on each and every match. This is the difference. This is Theo Walcott. This is the time to earn total respect. To add to your reputation and to that of the shirt.”

Some of the Premier League’s biggest stars have made pledges on how they will ‘Make the Difference’ in the Nike’s campaign. (ANI)

Salman Khan puts off US trip fearing detention by immigration officials

Washington, Aug 28 (ANI): Bollywood star Salman Khan who is scheduled to go to USA early next month reportedly cancelled his visit on Friday.

According to sources Khan decision comes in the wake of the humiliation faced by Sharukh Khan at New Jersey Airport.

Khan is scheduled to partake in a promotional event of his upcoming movie ” Wanted” besides participating in an auction of his personal paintings to raise funds for charity.

Khan’s decision was also propelled by the hard time being given by the US Consulate in Mumbai in approving the visa of his associates, including one of his family members, whom Salman wanted to bring along with on the promotional trip, sources said.

Besides Khan, producer Boney Kapoor, Bollywood star Sridevi and Prabhu Deva were also scheduled to attend the promotional event.

Following the Shahrukh Khan episode, which attracted a lot of media publicity both in India and the US, there is a sense of reluctance among local promoters and organisers of Bollywood events to risk inviting stars, sources added.

Khan’s decision has put a bug question mark before the promoters and also local organisers in cities like Chicago, Houston and Dallas who have invested a lot of effort and money in organising these events. (ANI)

McGrath’s advice to Johnson: Keep it simple

Sydney, Aug.27 (ANI): Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has told left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson not to overdo or over think things and keep things simple if he wants to reach his considerable potential as a Test match bowler.

McGrath, who has high hopes for Johnson and the other two members of Australia’s Ashes pace attack – Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, feels Johnson’s potential, will be reached only through a clear head uncluttered by countless theories about his bowling technique.

Though finishing with a solid return of 20 wickets at 32 in the Ashes series, Johnson was not the rampant force he was in South Africa and earlier at home.

“All his problems were sorted out when Michael Clarke said to him ‘just bowl fast’,” McGrath said.

“I can understand that. He needs to keep it simple. That is the key. He just has to clear his head and not complicate things. Less things can go wrong when you keep it simple. I just used to switch a voice off in my head, pick out a song to sing at the top of my mark and trust myself that my body knew how to bowl. It didn’t always work. But if you win the battle with yourself you are 75 per cent towards being successful,” the Courier Mail quoted McGrath, as saying.

“That’s all Mitch needs to do. Just relax. Even when he isn’t bowling well he still takes wickets. It is just a confidence thing. He needs to just run in and bowl,” he added.

McGrath also felt that Brett Lee can again return as a Test match force for Australia but the Johnson-Siddle-Hilfenhaus union has the potential to be a long-term one for Australia.

“Those three guys will grow as time goes on. They were the leading wicket-takers in the Ashes from both teams. You can’t really sledge them too much because I think they have done pretty well,” he said.

McGrath said Lee bowled well in an early tour game before being injured and cannot be dismissed from Test match calculations this summer when Australia play the West Indies and Pakistan in three-Test series.(ANI)

Rising water of rivers continues to wreak havoc in UP

Siddharthnagar (UP), Aug 25 (ANI): Rising water level of the rivers in Uttar Pradesh continues to wreak havoc.

More than 350 villages have been affected in the Siddharthnagar district.

Floods have been attributed to the release of water from barrages in Nepal. As a result, rivers like Burhi Rapti, Rapti, Kuda and Khonghi were flowing above the danger mark.

Till now, floods has claimed eight lives in the district.

Villages like Tariya, Maghuliya, Puraina are all submerged in the floodwaters.

Villagers are facing immense difficulties in commuting because of the lack of boats. Roads are inundated inside the floodwaters.

“We have no boats in our village to commute. Roads are submerged. We have nothing to eat and no basic amenities to sustain. We haven’t received any help yet,” said Radheyshyam, a resident of Tariya village.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Coal Sri Prakash Jaiswal accused the Uttar Pradesh Government of not taking the flood situation seriously.

“The State Government has not yet woken up from its slumber. By this time, someone from the state administration should have come to inspect the flooded areas. The State Government should have started the relief work by now. Relief workers haven’t reached the flooded areas yet,” said Jaiswal.

Heavy downpour after a delayed monsoon has created havoc in many districts of Uttar Pradesh which skirt the India-Nepal border since the waters of swollen rivers and reservoirs in Nepal rush southwards into these districts. (ANI)

‘Teen-proof’ room cuts out the clutter

London, Aug 24 (ANI): The days of teenagers’ messy bedrooms may finally be over, courtesy an Edinburgh-based company, which has designed a room they can’t ruin.

Design firm IDP claims to have created the ‘teen-proof’ bedroom, which provides solution for the cluttered spaces that have enraged parents for decades, reports the Scotsman.

It features drawing pin friendly fabric wallpaper; a wipe-clean desk; a swivel chair with secret pockets for stashing chocolate and electronic gizmos; stain-resistant carpets; and enough space under the bed to hide a mountain of clothes and computer games and still leave room for a set of iPod speakers.

Gilly Corkery of IDP said: “It was an incredibly challenging project. How do you counteract the natural messiness of teenagers?”

The room includes shelves tailored to the size of CDs, along with compartments in the bed space so that electronic equipment such as stereos or PlayStations can be plugged in – great for easy access when the teens are still lounging in bed at noon.

The room will be exhibited at the Homes and Interiors Scotland Exhibition at the SECC in Glasgow next weekend.

The design firm is keeping some details a closely guarded secret – just releasing a rough sketch of a suspiciously tidy-looking room and a sample of some dog-themed furniture decor.

Corkery, who modelled the design on the taste and habits of her son Jamie, 12, said: “We’ve tried to do little quirky things that teenagers will think are quite cool,” says

“No self-respecting teenager wants to move for too long so we’ve designed a desk chair which has a pocket where they can keep a remote control, their iPod, pens, chocolate or whatever, without having to move.

“Then there’s the upholstery fabric on the walls, which means they can put posters up with drawing pins without leaving a mark,” Corkery added. (ANI)

Katona ‘sniffed up more coke after drug video went public’

London, Aug 23 (ANI): Drug shamed Kerry Katona indulged herself in more cocaine after learning that her shocking snorting video was made public, it has emerged.t is reported that Katona was sniffing up more cocaine and repeating: “I’ve lost everything. I’m going to lose my kids – the lot!”

The News of the World quoted an insider as saying: “It’s unbelievable, but she was still taking cocaine to try to numb the pain, even after she was rumbled. All she wanted to do was get completely out of her mind.

“She was crying and saying she was going to lose her advert contract with Iceland and was terrified her ex, Brian McFadden, would get custody of their daughters Molly and Lilly-Sue.

“And she kept repeating how social services would take away her youngest two, Heidi and Max. But never, at any stage, did she say she was actually going to DO something about her problem and STOP taking the cocaine.

“It was the opposite, she was just wanting to get more and more drugs to get wasted. She was up all night Saturday (after the News of the World told her about the video) and couldn’t string a sentence together by Sunday lunchtime, she was a total mess.

“And her husband Mark kept whining over and over, ‘We’ve lost the f***ing lot, Kez!’ And he was taking cocaine, too. He’s no better than her.”

Katona has publicly admitted her fear of losing her children after she returned from a holiday in Tenerife.

Katona said: “I’ve let my children down. I’m so sorry and so ashamed. I know I let everyone down – my fans, my family and people I work with.”

She also said her latest cocaine snort was “a moment of weakness” due to hubby Mark’s escapades with strippers in Majorca.

“I did it because I was very unhappy at the time and thought it might make me feel better about myself,” she added. (ANI)

Now, Bolt wants to be knighted by the Queen

Berlin (Germany), Aug.21 (ANI): Jamiacan sprinter and world record holder in the 100 meters and 200 meters dash, Usain Bolt, has set himself a new goal of being knighted by the Queen.

Bolt’s new goal was announced hours after he lopped off 0.11 seconds off his previous 200 meter mark to win in 19.19sec. Earlier, he had set a new 100 meter record of 9.58 seconds. Bolt said he like to also set a world record in the 4x100m relay.

“It would be a great thing for Queen Elizabeth to knight me and for me to get the title Sir Usain Bolt,” said the Jamaican, who is 23 today.

Bolt’s 19.19secs gave him gold by almost 10 metres – despite the first five men all going under 20 seconds.
