Westlife were “lazy” on many of their albums

London, May 14 (ANI): Irish pop group Westlife has revealed that they regret recording so many cover songs during their pop career, as they had been “lazy” on many of their albums.

The boyband is famous for re-recording tracks by other artists, most famously taking on Barry Manilow’s ‘Mandy’, Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl’ and a cover of Phil Collins’ ‘Against All Odds’, a duet with Mariah Carey.

And despite being the only act in U.K. history to see all of their first seven singles reach the number one spot in the British charts, singer Nicky Byrne admits the band has made some “mistakes” along the way.

“We’ve certainly made a lot of mistakes. We’ve recorded songs that we should never have recorded. We look back on some of them and think, ‘Oh God, that was terrible’,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling the Sun.

“Sitting in rooms and nodding our heads and doing everything that was asked of us was what we did for years and years.

“But we are happy to speak now, to say, ‘I think we should do this.’ We’ve become men over the last few years,” he stated.

Bandmate Shane Filan added: “You get to a stage when you get a bit lazy. But then we’ll go back into the studio and realise the last record was a bit lazy and do better on the next one.” (ANI)

Nick Cannon relieved to know his mum loves Mariah Carey

Washington, Sept 15 (ANI): Rapper Nick Cannon is relieved that his mother gets along well with singer wife Mariah Carey because she had been tough on most of his girlfriends before.

The 28-year-old singer admits he was nervous about taking his new wife home to meet mum after they wed in 2008, following a whirlwind romance, because he feared she wouldn’t approve of his choice.

However, his mum loves Carey.

“Her and Mariah get along wonderfully and I love that because my mum, if she don’t (sic) like you, she’ll let you know instantly,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

“A couple of my ex-girlfriends got restraining orders on my momma ‘cos she’ll pull up to your crib in an SUV and just wait.

“She’s the nicest woman in the world but you do something wrong to her son, she’ll pull all the ex-gang member moves out… Sometimes they say something about me on the Internet (and) my mum goes nuts on ‘em.

Mariah Carey regrets apologising for shaky performance at MJ’s memorial

London, Sep 2 (ANI): Mariah Carey has said that she regrets apologising for her shaky performance at Michael Jackson’s memorial service by writing on her Twitter blog.

The ‘Hero’ hit-maker was the first singer who went on stage at the ‘Thriller’ star’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in July.

Carey, who was close friends with the ‘Thriller’ star, sang classic Jackson 5 hit ‘I’ll Be There’ at the service, while struggling to hit the notes as she fought back tears during her performance.

After the show, she explained on her Twitter.com blog how she became overemotional when she saw Jackson’s gold coffin below the stage.

“Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me. I could barely keep myself from crying. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him (Michael) there in front of me,” the Daily Express quote Carey as having written at the time.

And now, the singer is saying that she should not have publicly spoken out about her performance.

She, however, feels blessed that she was given the chance to sing at Jackson’s send off.

“I regret sending that message but I was very emotional and I wasn’t happy with my performance. But we all did our best to give Michael the send off he deserves. I just forgot the world could read that. I thought I was just talking to my friends. I shouldn’t have done that because that was really only meant for Michael. That was about him,” said Carey.

She added: “It was difficult just to get through the song because I feel as if I have been listening to Michael Jackson’s music my whole life. When I was a little kid I used to sing all his songs.

The whole world suffered a huge loss. The whole world is going to feel this forever. I feel myself blessed to have known him, to have performed with him several times and to have sung at his memorial.” (ANI)

Nick Cannon says wife Mariah Carey ‘did not help land talent job’

Washington, Sep 1 (ANI): Nick Cannon has slammed rumours that he landed the job of hosting ‘America’s Got Talent’ only because of his famous wife Mariah Carey.

The rapper/actor, who married the ‘Hero’ hitmaker last year, has insisted that their marital relationship does not sway potential employers.

Cannon’s career got a major boost when he was named a replacement for Jerry Springer, presenting Simon Cowell’s hit TV show.

And Carey then followed her hubby by appearing on the show in August this year to perform her latest single ‘Obsessed’.

Since then, rumours are rife that Cannon was handed the host’s job only with a stipulation that Carey appeared on the show.

However, the 26-year-old star has claimed that the gossip is untrue, saying that he was hired on his own merit.

“I’ve heard all the rumours that in order for me to get the job Mariah had to say she’d come perform. Like she helped me get the job. I’ve heard all of those rumours but none of that stuff is true,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Zap2It.

He added: “What actually happened is she had a hit single out and we got the number one show on TV so it’s the only destination for someone to perform in front of that big of an audience during the summer. She’s a huge fan of the show.”

However, Cannon has confessed that he was the one who facilitated the deal for Carey to appear on the show.

“They were looking for people and I kinda came up with the idea originally to debut her video on NBC and once that relationship got together, they were like, ‘Do you think she would come perform?’ and I was like, ‘Why not? Let’s figure it out!’” he added. (ANI)

Mariah Carey, ex Eminem’s war of words a ‘publicity stunt’

Washington, Aug 15 (ANI): Mariah Carey’s husband Nick Cannon has indicated that his wife’s row with her ex-beau Eminem is just a publicity stunt to promote their new albums.

Eminem declared war against the ‘Honey’ hitmaker by discussing their brief fling in his recent track Bagpipes from Baghdad, and Carey retaliated by mimicking Eminem in the video for her latest track ‘Obsessed’.

This urged Eminem to hit back again at her in a new song called ‘The Warning’.

According to critics, the fight has been orchestrated to promote Eminem and Carey’s new albums – and Cannon seems to agree.

“My wife doesn’t beef (feud). She’s Mariah Carey. She’s not beef’in. She’s vegetarian,” Contactmusic quoted Cannon as telling Us Weekly. (ANI)

John Mayer says he can’t replicate Jackson

Washington, July 10 (ANI): John Mayer has said that he chose not to sing at Michael Jackson’s memorial in Los Angeles because he believes that he cannot replicate the legend.

The singer had performed an instrumental of the hit single ‘Human Nature’ at the event in Staples Center.

“The decision not to sing came from knowing what’s best for me. I think it’s a mine field to try in any way to replicate vocally what Michael Jackson has done,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

He also explained that by not singing he wanted the absence of King of Pop to be realized.

He said: “And in a way, it was sort of respectfully leaving an absence, you know, sort of the presence of his absence.”

Mayer also revealed that he was amazed on being invited to the ceremony and wanted to confirm if the Jackson family wished him to come.

He added: “The first thing I said was a question, ‘Does this really come from the family?’ I think that was essential to me to be able to process the honor.

“It took me about 48 hours to strike the balance in how I was going to approach being invited to this unbelievable event without actually having the proximity to Michael Jackson, personally. I’d never met him.”

Mariah Carey, Usher and Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson had also performed at the event. (ANI)

She said: “Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me, I could barely keep myself from crying.

“I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me.”

The singer further wrote: “One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people he inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts.”

Britain’s Got Talent schoolboy Jafargholi wins hearts at Jackson’s memorial

London, July 8 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent finalist Shaheen Jafargholi moved fans around the globe to tears with his stunning tribute to Michael Jackson at the star’s memorial service in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The 12-year-old from Swansea, who shot to fame after performing the Jackson 5 hit Who’s Lovin’ You on the talent competition, wooed fans with his perfect rendition of the track at the Staples Center.

The schoolboy went on to thank the late King of Pop for playing his musical muse, and making him a celebrity.

“I just want to say I love Michael Jackson and I just want to thank him so much for blessing me and every single individual with such amazing music. Thank you so much. I love you Michael Jackson,” The Sun quoted him as saying.

The Jackson family was said to have chosen the youngster amongst other singers to honour the Thriller hitmaker, telling him that the late star was a huge fan of his Jackson tribute act.

And the young lad’s jaw-dropping solo performance won him an applause, leaving mourners believe that Jackson himself was there with them.

Fan Erika Ivory, 29, from New York, said: “When that little boy started singing, Oh my God! It was like Michael was here, his voice was so powerful. It was the most moving part of the ceremony. It was such an uplifting, moving moment, it filled my heart with hope. That boy is incredible.”

King of Pop Michael Jackson gets royal send off

Los Angeles, July 8 (DPA) From the fleet of Bentley limousines that transported his family, to the endlessly fawning comments of television anchors throughout the blanket coverage, Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop, got a send-off Tuesday that was fit for royalty.

As the 30-vehicle convoy left the Forest Lawns Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, it drove past dozens of broadcast trucks, with several news helicopters buzzing overhead. Police closed the 101 Freeway to allow the procession easy passage to the public memorial in downtown Los Angeles. Traffic in the opposite direction also slowed to a virtual standstill as commuters halted their journey to catch a glimpse of the hearse.

As the procession drew up to the Staples Centre a high-flying plane drew a huge heart in the blue Los Angeles sky, while fans screamed, “We love Michael!” TV crews were set up on dozens of large podiums close to the entrance, as the country’s most distinguished news anchors, from Katie Couric to Brian Williams, led the coverage.

“We made so many sacrifices to see him one last time. We sold everything we had in our house,” said one fan, who journeyed for three days on buses from South Carolina to southern California to attend the memorial, even though she had no ticket.

Inside the arena, a large royal blue stage was erected at a basketball court that usually plays host to the Los Angeles Lakers. The backdrop featured a photo of a smiling Jackson looking up towards the sky and the words: “In loving memory of Michael Jackson King of Pop. 1958-2009.”

A lavish gold-coloured programme featured pictures of Jackson with presidents, political leaders and showbiz stars, and tributes from his family and friends.

The elaborate service began with Smokey Robinson reading tribute letters from the likes of Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela. The backdrop then changed to an image of stained glass windows as Jackson’s casket, laden high with flowers, was wheeled in. His pallbearers were each wearing a single, sequined glove in a tribute to one of Jackson’s signature styles, as a gospel choir sang.

The elite of pop music performed tributes for Jackson, from Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder to John Mayer and Usher.

“The title King of Pop is not big enough for him,” said Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown who discovered Jackson and guided his early career. “I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”

But for some in the entertainment world, the endless fawning and hagiography was a little much. Media columnist Brian Lowry could barely wait for the event to end as he blogged it live for entertainment trade paper Variety. He juxtaposed the reverential tones with the bizarre behaviour that Jackson often displayed and which “makes the worshipful tone characterizing much of this coverage even more questionable.”

African American activist Al Sharpton, in his eulogy for Jackson, tried to explain the pop star’s mass appeal. “You would have to understand the journey of Michael to understand what he means to us,” said Sharpton.

“When Michael started it was a different world but because he kept going, because he refused to let other people decide his boundaries, he opened up the whole world. It was Michael Jackson who brought blacks and whites and Asians and Latinos together. It was MJ who made us say ‘We Are The World’ and ‘Feed the Hungry’.”

Only one reader of Variety, commonly regarded as the Bible of the US entertainment industry, bothered to post a comment – and he obviously did not agree with Sharpton. “A grotesque and vulgar display,” noted reader Jack Henry of the ceremony. “The US is not only financially bankrupt, but morally and culturally bankrupt as well. God help us.”

Mariah Carey dresses up like Eminem in new video

New York, July 1 (ANI): Pop star Mariah Carey took a dig at her ex-boyfriend Eminem, as she dressed up as the rapper in a new music video.

The 39-year-old singer dressed up as a man twice in her new video ‘Obsessed’, directed by Brett Ratner.

At first, Carey impersonated a male rapper, which bears a striking resemblance to Eminem, reports the New York Daily News.

And later, the diva dressed as a male bellhop before ending the day in a tight snakeskin number.

Rapper Nick Cannon is persuading wife Carey to perform at America’s Got Talent.

Cannon has replaced Jerry Springer as the host on the new season, which kicked off in the US earlier this week.

He insists that viewers could get a superstar thrown in with the wannabe acts – hinting Carey may takeover the stage as she’s a huge fan of the series. (ANI)
