Deshpande denies keeping IPL in dark about ”individual bid”

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) The twists and turns in the Pune bid row continued today with City Corporation MD Aniruddh Deshpande refuting allegations that he kept the IPL in dark about his “individual bid” for the franchise but conceded that the company”s name was used in his bid documents. Deshpande”s denial comes in the wake of media reports that the Pune-based Real Estate firm City Corporation had authorised him to bid on the company”s behalf in a January board meeting.

The firm, in which Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar”s family has 16 per cent equity, had earlier denied being part of the bid but BCCI President Shashank Manohar yesterday rejected its claim, saying the failed bid came in the company”s name. Deshpande said he had told the IPL that he would float a new company after winning the bid, which was eventually clinched by the Sahara Group.

Deshpande said the City Corporation allowed him to use the company”s name on the documents as very little time was left for the bids to open. “All the documents were in the company”s name and a letter to that effect was also submitted to the IPL Governing Council on March 21 before the bid.

I told them that the stakeholders will change if we are successful bidders,” Deshpande said. “Since we were not successful bidders, nothing further had to be done,” he added.

City Corporation”s involvement had been vehemently denied by Pawar and his Parliamentarian daughter Supriya Sule. The duo had said that the Pawar family was not involved in any bidding process but had admitted that Deshpande was allowed to go ahead in his “individual capacity”.

Deshpande said the company”s Board backed out of bidding for the team after a March 17 meeting where a fresh resolution allowing him to go ahead individually was passed. .

Modi’s appearance before SIT shows nobody’s above law, says Moily

New Delhi/ Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat), March 27 (ANI): Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily on Saturday said that even if the appearance of Gujarat Chief Minister Narender Modi before the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) was most unfortunate, it did reflect that all were equal before the law.

“It is most unfortunate that he landed himself into to that kind of situation. It is not desirable. But, unfortunately, it has happened. But that demonstrates the fact that nobody is above law. Rule of law is equal to every one as I have repeated there,” said M Veerappa Moily here.

To a poser on Modi questioning the validity of the SIT summons to him, Moily said that by doing so he was questioning the authority of the country”s apex court.

“No, it is for him to agitate before the court, that means he is questioning the authority of the Supreme Court to appoint an SIT. And SIT is empowered by the Supreme Court decision. That means he is questioning the Supreme Court. He should understand what he is doing,” he added.

In Gandhinagar, earlier in the day, Modi appeared before the before Special Investigation Team (SIT), appointed by the apex court to inquire into the communal riots of 2002 in the state, amid tight security.

Modi”s security and bomb disposal squad arrived before him at the premises from where SIT is functioning at Gandhinagar. The enquiry was on till 3.30 p.m. on Saturday.

Modi, 59, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the first-ever Chief Minister of any state to be called for questioning in a criminal complaint of mass murder after he and his administration were accused of aiding and abetting riots in one area of Ahmedabad.

The Supreme Court appointed SIT to inquire into the 2002 Gujarat riots that claimed lives of more than 2,500 lives required Modi to appear before it for questioning on Sunday (March 21). However, Modi did not turn up for the questioning by the SIT members on Sunday.

The summons followed a petition filed by Zakia Jaffrey, widow of Ehsan Jaffrey, a former Congress party legislator, who was allegedly burnt alive during the riots in what has come to be known as the Gulbarg Society massacre on February 28, 2002.

The Hindu-Muslim clashes in the western state of Gujarat killed more than 2,500 people displaced some 200,000 and orphaned about 400 children.

The reprisal attacks by a group of Hindus broke loose after suspected Muslim attackers torched a train carrying Hindu pilgrims on February 27, 2002, killing 59 Kar Sevaks (devotees) in a Gujarat town. (ANI)

Golfer Woods approval rating on the rise before Augusta Masters comeback

London, Mar.27 (ANI): Golfer Tiger Woods could have some reason to celebrate after a recent survey found his approval rating rising from an all-time low last December in the run-up to next month’s Augusta Masters tournament.

According to the survey of 1030 adults conducted by Opinion Research Corporation from March 19 to 21, forty three per cent of those polled have a favourable opinion of Woods, while 45 percent don’t have such an opinion.

In December last year, Woods approval rating was a low 34 percent.

Of those polled most recently, 59 per cent want to see him win the Masters, while 20 percent are rooting against him. Fifty-two percent actually expect him to win, while 42 per cent say he won”t.

Since Woods” TV interviews were shown late on March 21, it can be assumed that the survey results were collected before the broadcasts aired. (ANI)

Gujarat riots: Modi says ready to appear before SIT panel

Ahmedabad, Mar 27 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation on the 2002 Gujarat riots case on Saturday.

Sources said Modi has verbally responded to the SIT request by asserting that he is ready to appear provided a certain decorum is maintained by the investigators interrogating him on March 27.

There are reports that Modi”s interrogation may not take place inside the SIT office for security reasons and he may be questioned at a place mutually agreed by him and the SIT.

In a strong statement issued earlier after he was reported to have kept the panel waiting, Modi said: “It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT on March 21.”

In his statement, Modi pointed out that March 21 happened to be “a Sunday and a public holiday.”

“The purveyors of lies did not even bother to check whether the SIT officers appointed by Supreme Court were present in Gujarat on March 21,” Modi said.

Modi alleged that the date March 21, was given out by “some vested interests and as part of the effort to interfere in the due process of law.”

Modi said in his statement that he would respond to the SIT, “Fully respecting the law and keeping in view the dignity of the body appointed by the Supreme Court.”
The SIT, which is headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director K R Raghavan, is looking into nine cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The SIT has asked Modi to appear before it in connection with the Gulbarg Society carnage case.

Modi has been named as one of the 63 accused in the petition filed by Zakiya Jafri, the widow of the Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed by rioters in Gulbarg society of Ahmedabad on February 28, 2002.

In the case filed in the Supreme Court, Zakiya stated that Modi and 62 others had conspired during the riots, and that senior ministers had ordered bureaucrats and policemen not to respond to calls for help. Over a thousand people died in the Gujarat communal riots.

The Gujarat High Court has issued a notice to the Nanavati Commission asking it to explain, by April 1, whether it too would summon Narendra Modi as part of its inquiry into the 2002 riots. (ANI)

Modi may appear before SIT on March 27

Ahmedabad, Mar 24 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for interrogation into the 2002 Gujarat riots case on March 27.

There are reports that Modi”s interrogation may not take place inside the SIT office due to security reasons. He may be questioned at a place mutually agreed by him and the SIT.

Meanwhile, confusion prevailed on Monday as Modi said he was not summoned to appear before a Special Investigating Team (SIT) probing 2002 Gujarat riots cases on March 21.

On Monday evening Modi released an open letter defending his stand.

In a strong statement issued a day after he was reported as having kept the panel waiting for him to appear before it, Modi said: “It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT on March 21.”

Modi to cooperate with SIT: Arun Jaitley

Ahemadabad, Mar 22 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata leader Arun Jaitley on Monday said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will cooperate with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Gulbarg carnage case of the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Interacting with the media here, Jaitely, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said: “When Modi has to appear there (before the SIT) at designated time, he will. He will cooperate with the SIT.”

Commenting on why Modi didn’t appear before the SIT, Jaitley told reporters: “SIT didn’t fix March 21 for Modi’s appearance.”

“For the past few days, there has been incorrect information circulated in the media from some interested quarters about the date of SIT’s summon. It is an effort to create wrong impression to interfere in the process of law,” he added.

Earlier the day, Narendra Modi issued an open letter where he reasoned out that the SIT don’t summon anyone on Sundays and on public holidays.

“I will respond to the SIT fully respecting law and keeping in view the dignity of the body appointed by the Supreme Court. But it is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that Narendra Modi has been summoned by SIT (Special Investigation Team) on March 21,” read the statement. President to Meet With Key Senators Next Week About Immigration

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to focus attention on immigration next week by meeting at the White House with two senators crafting a bill on the issue.

White House spokesman Nicholas Shapiro said Obama will meet with Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Monday.

The president is “looking forward to hearing more about their efforts toward producing a bipartisan bill,” Shapiro said Friday.

The meeting will be the first Obama has had with Schumer and Graham on the proposal they are developing since they began focusing on it last year.

Immigration has taken a back seat to the economy and health care on Obama’s agenda since he took office just over a year ago. Immigrants and their advocates — promised by then-candidate Obama that he would tackle the issue in his first year as president — have been growing frustrated by the inaction.

Several community groups planned to vent some of that frustration in a news conference Monday in Washington. The groups also are trying to organize tens of thousands of people from around the country for a March 21 demonstration in Washington.

“The president’s commitment to fixing our broken immigration system remains unwavering,” Shapiro said.

Brit dad helps wife deliver baby after YouTube tutorial!

London, May 1 (ANI): A Brit father took up the role of a midwife when his wife went into sudden labour, and delivered his baby with the help of a virtual coach-YouTube.

When Marc Stephens, decided to ‘Google’ how to deliver a baby, he had no idea that he would be putting the information into practice just hours later when his wife, Jo, 28, went into labour three weeks early on March 21.
The 28-year-old naval engineer, already a father of three, decided to search the Internet after Jo felt some discomfort.

And it was the matter of only four hours that he had to put his newfound knowledge into practice, after he was told that no midwife was available as Jo went into sudden labour.

The couple had planned on a home birth, but were told to get to the hospital because all the midwives were busy.

“They said do you want to bring her in or do you want an ambulance,” The Telegraph quoted Marc as saying.

He added: “At this time Jo rushed out of the bathroom and dropped down on all fours. As soon as she dropped down I looked down and its head was sticking out. I was still on the phone to the midwife

“When Jo said ‘you might deliver this one’ as a joke, I didn’t believe it. You just don’t think it’s going to happen. To be honest I didn’t have time to panic.

“My youngest daughter woke up and was standing right behind me watching the whole thing!”

However, full-time mum Jo, who has had her three other children, Zoe, 6, Sophie, 5, and Jasmine, 2, in hospital, said that it was her most relaxed labour.

“I was quite relaxed. I wasn’t panicking at all. I have to say, out of all my four labours, that was the one I enjoyed the most. It was the most relaxed one,” she said.

Jo even applauded her husband’s calmness during the whole procedure.

“There was no sense of panic in his voice at all. It was like it was another day at work for him. Mark is one of those people he can put his hand to anything. He has learnt quite a few things off YouTube – how to do a Rubik’s cube and play the guitar.”

And when Marc was done with delivering 5lb 5oz Gabriele, the paramedics arrived and congratulated him on a good job. (ANI)

Web slowdown hurting Myanmar businesses, AS

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) Disruptions to Myanmar’s Internet service will continue indefinitely, a state-owned service provider warned Friday, saying it does not know when it will complete repairs to an undersea cable. The slowdown has hit local businesses hard, causing some Internet cafes to close their doors and prompting travelers to cancel trips to the impoverished nation.

State-owned Myanmar Teleport blamed the problems on maintenance it has been doing since March 21 on a cable in the Bay of Bengal. Teleport initially said work would be finished on March 25 but now says it does not know when the repairs will be completed.

“Currently we do not know the schedule for repair completion,” Teleport said in a statement. The junta in Myanmar aggressively censors the Internet and routinely blocks politically sensitive Web sites such as those promoting human rights.

During a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in September 2007, it cut all access to the Internet and shuttered many cybercafes. But this time around, there is no indication that government meddling is behind the slowdown.

While hard to confirm, business owners said they believed the problem was technical.

Inflation rises marginally to 0.31 percent

New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) India’s annual rate of inflation rose marginally to 0.31 percent for the week ended March 21, after declining for eight consecutive weeks, official data showed Thursday. The inflation rate was 0.27 percent the week before.

The marginal rise was mainly on account of a rise in the official wholesale price index compared to the corresponding week of last year. Between March 14 and 21, the index rose 0.1 percent, data released by the commerce and industry ministry showed.

Among the three main commodity groups, the index for manufactured products rose 0.2 percent, while that for primary articles registered a small increase. The index for fuel, however, declined marginally to 320.9 (provisional) from 321.0 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of furnace oil.

Economists, who have already warned of a deflation in the Indian economy, explain that lower inflation rate does not necessarily mean that prices have fallen. Lower inflation rate only means the rate of rise in prices has come down, not the actual prices.

Deflation is a decline in the general price level. It is caused by factors such as low money supply and credit, and a curb in spending by households, industry or government. The lower demand during deflation often leads to a rise in unemployment.

Inflation at 0.31 pct on Mar 21 – govt

India’s wholesale price index rose 0.31 percent in the 12 months to March 21, marginally above the previous week’s annual rise of 0.27 percent, government data showed on Thursday.

It was above a median forecast of 0.18 percent in a Reuters poll of analysts.

The annual inflation rate was 7.85 percent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The wholesale price index is more closely watched than the consumer price index, which is published monthly, because it covers a higher number of products and is released weekly.

POLL – Inflation seen at 0.18 pct on March 21

Inflation rate is forecast to have dropped closer to zero in the third week of March, a Reuters poll showed on Wednesday.

The median forecast of 11 analysts was for a 0.18 percent rise in the wholesale price index in the 12 months to March 21, below the 0.27 percent rise the previous week.

It would be the lowest inflation rate since records started in 1977/78 and comes a little more than seven months after the inflation rate peaked 12.91 percent in early August.

Inflation has fallen sharply as commodity prices plunged due to the deepening global economic and financial crisis.

The median forecast is consistent with the actual price index remaining steady at the previous week’s reading of 227.0.

Madan Sabnavis, economist with National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, forecast a negative reading in the data, which is due around noon (0630 GMT) on Thursday..

“We are expecting the inflation to move into the negative zone mainly because of prices of agri-commodities, such as gram and mustard, and international metal prices had come down,” he said.

The weekly wholesale price index is more closely watched than the monthly consumer price index (CPI) because it includes more products.
