Japan says it will continue to export nuclear power plants

Japan today said it would continue to export nuclear power plants after ensuring that the safety of the technology was of highest global standards, even as the country grapples with the crisis at its tsunami-hit Fukushima atomic unit.

The Japanese cabinet approved the sales despite uncertainty over Tokyo's own use of the atomic technology.

Prior to the March 11 devastating earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear crisis in the country, Japan had been actively promoting exports of nuclear technology and had struck an accord last year to build nuclear plants in Vietnam.

India has also been in talks with Japan for importing Japanese nuclear

power plants to feed its ever mushrooming energy needs. Japan has also signed energy cooperation pacts with Russia, South Korea and Jordan.

In an official statement the Japanese government said, “in case other countries wish to utilise our nuclear power technology, we shall provide it by ensuring that its safety is of the highest global standards.”

Without naming any country, the statement said, “a number of countries continue to express interest in Japan's nuclear power technology.”

The statement said Japanese parliament would ratify nuclear accords with Jordan, Vietnam, Russia and South Korea.

The parliament is currently debating the pact.

Eight of ten Americans trust in big government near historic low

Washington, Apr. 19 (ANI): Eight out of ten Americans say they can”t trust Washington and they have little faith that the massive federal bureaucracy can solve the nation”s ills.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, the poll released Sunday illustrates an ominous situation facing President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party as they struggle to maintain their comfortable congressional majorities in this fall”s elections.

The survey found that just 22 percent of those questioned say they can trust Washington almost always or most of the time and just 19 percent say they are basically content with it. Nearly half say the government negatively effects their daily lives, a sentiment that”s grown over the past dozen years.

Majorities in the survey call Washington too big and too powerful, and say it”s interfering too much in state and local matters.

The public is split over whether the government should be responsible for dealing with critical problems or scaled back to reduce its power, presumably in favor of personal responsibility.

About half say they want a smaller government with fewer services, compared with roughly 40 percent who want a bigger government providing more.

The public was evenly divided on those questions long before Obama was elected.

The poll was based on four surveys done from March 11 to April 11 on landline and cell phones. The largest survey, of 2,500 adults, has a margin of sampling error of 2.5 percentage points; the others, of about 1,000 adults each, has a margin of sampling error of 4 percentage points. (ANI)

Gunns director gets ASX ‘please explain’

The Australian Stock Exchange has issued Gunns director Robin Gray with a “please explain” after he lodged a late notice about his shareholding.

On February 26 Mr Gray, a former Tasmanian Premier and Gunns board member, bought 100,000 Gunns shares, valued at $55,000.

Mr Gray was required to notify the ASX of his purchase by March 5.

Gunns did not notify the ASX of the purchase until March 11.

Company secretary Wayne Chapman says the notice “was late as a result of an oversight by the director.”

Mr Chapman says the company has procedures to ensure directors lodge their forms on time and it will send reminders to “relevant people” about their obligations.

Gunns’ chairman John Gay has previously said that interstate investors are pressuring him, Robin Gray and Richard Millar to leave the board.

Gunns’ share price today dropped 5 per cent to 48 cents.

20 injured at Yemen funeral after separatist protest

Yemeni security forces fired tear gas and live bullets on Saturday into a funeral procession for people killed in separatist demonstrations earlier this month, injuring 20 people, witnesses said.

The clashes happened in the southern province of Dalea, where two protestors were shot dead on March 11 as security forces broke up a demonstration.

North and South Yemen united in 1990 but many people in the south, home to most Yemeni oil facilities, complain that northerners have used unification to grab resources and discriminate against them.

Last week Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh declared an end to a long-running war with northern Shi’ite rebels that drew in Saudi forces last year.

The country is also cracking down on al Qaeda and Saleh was quoted on Saturday as saying Yemen had made progress with the help of regional and Western powers.

Bihar Education Project circular for mention of caste in answer sheets

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), Mar 25 (ANI): A circular issued by Bihar Education Project (BEP) officials in Muzaffarpur district has made it mandatory for students to mention their caste in answer sheets or else their results would be kept pending.

The circular said it would be of great help in finding out the total percentage of students belonging to a particular caste appearing in annual examinations from Class I to VIII for an ”honest assessment”.

The circular was issued on March 11 by BEP Programme Cordinator-cum-District Education Superintendent Arun Kumar and Primary Informal Education Coordinator Shankar Kumar through letter no. BEP/247.

BEP Director Rajesh Bhushan said that he was not aware of such a circular being issued by the state headquarters and added that he would verify it. (ANI)

‘Burka like a paper bag on head’ remark lands Brit MP in trouble

London, Mar.24 (ANI): A Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) has invited trouble by abusing the ‘burka’, as a probe has been ordered against him for inciting racial hatred.

During a parliamentary debate last month, Philip Hollobone had urged the House of Commons to ‘seriously consider’ banning the garment, which is often used by Muslim women.

“Wearing a burka was like going round with a paper bag over your head,” Hollobone had reportedly said on the floor of the house.

Meanwhile, Hollobone has criticised the Northamptonshire Rights and Equality Council (NREC) for complaining against him.

He blasted NREC for challenging the freedom of speech while attempting to have him prosecuted.

“It”s complete hypocrisy. They talk on one hand about freedom of speech and expression and then without even making contact try to get me prosecuted. In this country you should be able to have a debate about controversial subjects without the threat of police action. That”s how democracy works,” The Sun quoted Hollobone, as saying.

It may be noted that NREC had sent letter to the MP criticising his stance on Muslim women who choose to wear the burka in public.

Speaking during a debate on the occasion of International Women”s Day (March 11) last week, Hollobone had insisted that wearing a burka was not in accordance with the country’s culture.

“This is Britain. We are not a Muslim country. Covering your face in public is strange and to many people both intimidating and offensive,” Hollobone had said.

According to an estimate, burkas are worn by about 100,000 of the 2.4million Muslims living in Britain. (ANI)

Train windows reinforced after Epping tunnel blow-out

CityRail is reinforcing door windows on one of its older-style suburban trains after Sydney passengers narrowly escaped being injured by flying glass.

About ten people were sitting in the first carriage of a silver K-set train as it went through the Epping to Chatswood tunnel at about 9:30pm on March 11.

Student Daniel Rosser says a window pane landed just centimetres from one of his mates.

“All of a sudden the door window from the train flew out at such a high speed and flew back down the stairs,” he said.

“It was so close, if it had been a peak hour train it would have been so bad.”

Mr Rosser suspects the pressure of the tunnel may have caused the accident.

“It was an older train and it was air-conditioned so there were no windows open,” he said.

“We were in the front carriage and then our ears popped in the tunnel…the pressure was so great in the tunnel we figure that it must have pushed the window out.”

In a statement, CityRail says the incident was rare but, as an added safety precaution, it is now attaching metal fasteners to door windows on all K-set carriages.

The $2.3 billion Epping-Chatswood rail link opened last year and has been plagued by problems, including unacceptably high noise levels.

In 2007 it was revealed that Tangara trains would not be operating on the route because of the steep gradient in some parts of the tunnel.

K-set trains were introduced to the CityRail fleet between 1981 and 1985.

They currently operate on the North Shore, Western, Northern, Newcastle and Central coast lines.

N D Tiwari in fresh trouble over paternity suit

New Delhi, Mar 17 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday declined the plea of former AP Governor N D Tiwari on a paternity suit filed by a youth, who is claiming to be his biological son

The court will now hear the paternity filed by the youth Rohit Shekhar on April 7, who had earlier challenged a single bench order of November 2009 that had dismissed the case on jurisdictional grounds.

The court had on March 11 reserved its order on the paternity suit filed by Shekhar.

A Bench comprising Justices Vikramajit Sen and Manmohan Singh reserved the order after the octogenarian politician opposed the court entertaining such a petition, which was filed 31 years after Shekhar”s birth.
Shekhar had filed an appeal before a Division Bench challenging a single-bench order, which had dismissed his petition on the ground that it was not maintainable.

Justice S N Dhingra had on November 3, 2009 said the suit filed by Shekhar was not maintainable and allowed the plea of 84-year-old Tiwari who had sought dismissal of the petition.

Tiwari had quit as Andhra Pradesh Governor following allegations of his involvement in a sex scandal inside Raj Bhavan. (ANI)

Pak cricketers’ financial assets to be scrutinised following match fixing allegations

Islamabad, Mar. 8 (ANI): Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has decided to scrutinize the financial assets of Pakistani cricketers in the wake of match fixing allegation.

“We are very much concerned over the continuous criticism from different circles over match fixing and have directed PML (N) legislator Saud Majeed, chairman sub-committee, to probe into these allegations. The sub-committee will also scrutinize the financial strength of the players besides verifying their tax returns,” The Dawn NA committee chief Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, as saying

However, PCB chief Ijaz Butt informed the NA committee that the players who were involved in match-fixing were not from the current squad.

“The match fixing allegations are totally baseless and the current tour of the squad to Australia was not tainted by match fixing at all,” Butt said.

He claimed that that former cricketers Saleem Malik and Ataur Rehman were in fact responsible for match fixing.

The NA committee also gave a deadline of March 11 to the Punjab government for bring responsible police officers to book who displayed slackness during their duty on March 3, 2009 when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by terrorists in Lahore. (ANI)

Malay Indian mom waits to get baby back from converted hubby

Ipoh, Apr 26 (ANI): Indian origin teacher in Malaysia M. Indira Gandhi spent a sleepless night at the Ipoh police district headquarters, waiting for her baby to be returned to her.

She had been there since the High Court here granted her interim custody of her three children and an injunction preventing her husband from entering their home.

On Friday, Judicial Commissioner Ridwan Ibrahim had also ordered police to assist Indira Gandhi, 34, in enforcing the orders, The Star reports.

However, Indira Gandhi said police told her to find K. Patmanathan, 40, before they could retrieve one-year-old Prasana Diksa.

Patmanathan had taken Prasana from their home in First Garden on April 4 after he had converted to Islam.

“If I could locate him, I definitely would have gone and brought my baby straight home. What are the police there for?”

When met at her place of vigil, Indira Gandhi said Patmanathan called her at 8.30pm on Friday to say he was on his way to Singapore.

She claimed he refused when she asked him to return Prasana.

“She is still breastfeeding and I have not done so for the past one month. I don’t know how she’s doing,” she said.

Patmanathan’s last known address was his mother’s house in Pasir Puteh.

Police refused to comment, but Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran said they had agreed to set up a special unit to trace the husband.

According to court documents, Indira Gandhi discovered that her husband had converted to Islam on March 11 and was now known as Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah. (ANI)

UPDATE 1-Entergy NY Indian Pt 3 reactor reonnects to grid

(Releads with reconnection to grid)

NEW YORK, April 15 (Reuters) – Entergy Corp’s (ETR.N) 1,025-megawatt Unit 3 at the Indian Point nuclear power plant near New York City reconnected to the power grid Wednesday afternoon after a 35-day refueling outage, the company said.

The unit had been shut since March 11 for scheduled maintenance and refueling. By late Wednesday afternoon, it was operating at 28 percent of production capacity, said Jerry Nappi, Indian Point spokesman for Entergy.

The 2,045 MW Indian Point station is located in Buchanan in Westchester County about 45 miles north of New York City. The station has two units: the 1,020 MW Unit 2 and the 1,025 MW Unit 3, which entered service in 1973 and 1976.

Unit 2 continued to operate at full power early Wednesday.

Before it shut on March 11 to refuel, Unit 3 had operated for 678 consecutive days, a U.S. record for continuous operation for Westinghouse pressurized water reactors, Entergy said.

One MW powers about 800 homes in New York.

Entergy, of New Orleans, owns and operates about 30,000 MW of generating capacity, markets energy commodities and transmits and distributes power to 2.7 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. (Reporting by Joe Silha and Bernie Woodall, editing by John Picinich)

Orissa Governor submits controversial trust vote report to President

New Delhi, Mar. 20 (ANI): Orissa Governor M C Bhandare has submitted his report on the trust vote that took place in the state assembly to President Pratibha Patil.

The report includes details of the assembly proceedings of March 11 when Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik won the controversial trust vote, which has been challenged by both the Congress and the BJP.

According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson, Bhandare met Patil on Wednesday and submitted his report.

The report has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs for “appropriate action”, the spokesperson added.

Earlier, opposition Congress and BJP members had alleged manipulation in the trust vote, and said that the Speaker had “adopted” a voice vote route to make the government win the trust vote instead of going for a division.

The passage of the confidence motion through a voice vote was termed as a “murder of democracy” by the opposition, which demanded imposition of President’s rule.

The Speaker, however, claimed that no norm had been violated in handling the motion moved the Chief Minister Patnaik.

With a two-phased polls scheduled in the state on April 16 and 23, Orrisa is already in election mode. (ANI)

Facebook’s latest makeover gathers mixed reviews

Melbourne, March 14 (ANI): Facebook has managed to gather mixed reviews after rolling out changes to its home and profile pages from March 11.

The social-networking giant had previously announced the makeover on every member’s homepage.

However, changes were being introduced to a small percentage of its expanding 175 million members every day to prevent crashing the system.

These included increased friend limit, a rephrasing of the status update question, along with being able to follow profile pages of celebrities, organisations and causes while remaining updated about friends.

The free access website claimed having received more than 30,000 emails from those using the new layout, with over 5000 users clicking “like this” option as a response to the changes.

However, other comments showed a different side to the story.

“I absolutely hate this. Please change it back,” News.com.au quoted one user, Kelsie as saying.

Dawn said: “It is terrible, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Put it back the way it was or (at) least give people the option.”

Another user Steffi added: “Why don’t you ask your members if we want this. I mean if we’re so important to you and you want our input on making rules and such why not ask about this. Why did you change it. It’s horrible.”

Other users remained more tolerant, such as Alyssa who said: “Facebook has every right to change… it’s their site. People will get over this. Just like before.” (ANI)

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft successfully swaps thrusters

Washington, March 13 (ANI): The Cassini spacecraft has relayed information that it had successfully swapped to a backup set of propulsion thrusters late on March 11.

The swap was performed because of degradation in the performance of the primary thrusters, which had been in use since Cassini’s launch in 1997.

This is only the second time in Cassini’s 11 years of flight that the engineering teams have gone to a backup system.

The thrusters are used for making small corrections to the spacecraft’s course, for some attitude control functions, and for making angular momentum adjustments in the reaction wheels, which also are used for attitude control.

The redundant set is an identical set of eight thrusters. Almost all Cassini engineering subsystems have redundant backup capability.

Cassini has successfully completed its original four-year planned tour of Saturn and is now in extended mission operations. (ANI)
