Militants regrouping in PoK to cross over to Indian side

Militants have regrouped in large numbers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and are crossing the Line of Control to sneak into the Indian side of the Himalayan region, local residents and political leaders have said.

The militants have regrouped and launched jehadi activities in the Neelum valley on the Pakistani side of the LoC, local politician Arif Shahid said. Local residents and Shahid said the militants were not from PoK.

“Jihadi activities have been restarted during the last few weeks,” said Shahid, the secretary general of the All Parties National Alliance.

“Most of the activities are concentrated in the Neelum valley along the LoC,” Shahid told the BBC.

Shahid, who had visited the region with other APNA leaders, said the militants were based there in large numbers and had set up camps in the area.

“The men are not locals they have long hair and beards. Most do not speak the local language,” he said.

Residents of Neelum valley backed Shahid’s assertions. “We are scared… The armed men are moving around the area and are trying to cross the border,” a local resident said.

“We can make out from their appearances and languages they are not from any part of Kashmir,” the resident said.

Shahid said he believed that militants are planning to sabotage ongoing peace negotiations between India and Pakistan.

“They have set up camps in the region and many are crossing the border… This is the start of another proxy war,” he said.

Following a meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh last month, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries recently agreed to meet in Islamabad on July 15 to nudge the peace process forward.

Shahid’s comments were supported by Jammu and Kashmir National Liberation Front leader Shaukat Maqbool Bhat. “The fighters are there and they are regularly crossing into India,” Bhat said.

“The local people are very scared they believe the (militant) crossings are going to restart artillery exchanges between the Pakistani and Indian armies,” Bhat said.

Indian and Pakistani troops regularly fought artillery duels and exchanged small arms fire till a ceasefire was put in place along the LoC in November 2003.

From 1988, militants aided by Pakistan’s security forces and intelligence agencies waged a guerrilla campaign in Jammu and Kashmir. Their activities were curtailed during the rule of former President Pervez Musharraf, who quit in August 2008.

The BBC quoted unnamed officials as saying that jehadi activities had recommenced across the LoC in recent weeks. It also quoted its correspondents as saying that the renewed militant activity is bound to be of concern to India, especially when Delhi and Islamabad almost came to war when militants accused by India of being Pakistani-based attacked the Indian parliament in December 2001.

‘Embarrassed’ Musharraf’s close aides shying away from commenting on his misdeeds

Islamabad, Sep.16 (ANI) : Close aides of former Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf are too embarrassed and are shying away from responding to the former general’s claims that he had taken the November 3, 2007 actions only after consulting various top officials, including the then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the current Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani.

Musharraf’s erstwhile close associates find the topic as ‘too dirty’ to speak about and have been avoiding any queries regarding that by simply saying ‘no comments’.

A former spokesman of the Shaukat Aziz government, however, denied that the cabinet had prior knowledge of Musharraf’s plan of imposing the emergency.

When asked about the issue, Lieutenant General (retired) Ali Jan Orakzai said: “It’s such a dirty subject that leaving it untouched would be a better option.”

Orakzai said he is waiting for the apt time to speak on Musharraf’s claims.

“Let’s see the gravity of the subject. I would record my statement before the court in case summoned on this issue,” The News quoted Orakzai, as saying.

When informed about Shaukat Aziz’s statement that he was not consulted on the November 3 actions, Orakzai said issuing such statements from abroad is easier.

“Shaukat Aziz can do this as he is living in London. I can’t do so,” he said.

Former Punjab Governor Lieutenant General (retired) Khalid Maqbool said he has decided not to enter into any controversy related to the past events that occurred during his stint. (ANI)

Pak hypnotist vows to change KKR’s fortunes, writes letter to SRK

Islamabad, Aug.30 (ANI): After having helped the Pakistan cricket team win the ICC World T20 Championship, famous psychotherapist and hypnotist Maqbool ‘Max’ Babri has expressed his interest in holding training sessions for the troubled Indian Premier League (IPL) team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to change its fortunes.

Babri has written a letter to KKR owner Shahrukh Khan and the team’s former captain Sourav Ganguly’s brother, Snehashish Ganguly, expressing his desires to be KKR’s ‘mental’coach and ‘thought manager’ for the third season of the IPL.

“I will very much like to be a part of your team as a thought manager and mind coach. People think I am a magician, but I must confess that I am not a magician but certainly what I do appears to be like magic and transforms people to really excel in what they do and makes them happy and buoyant,” Babri stated in his letter.

Interestingly, Babri had predicted that Pakistan, which was considered underdogs in the tournament, would win the T20 World Cup after spending six days with the team ahead of the event.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had appointed Babri to help players cope up with pressure and perform well in the T20 World Cuo after the team’s dismal show in previous events and lack of international exposure due the refusal of foreign teams to visit Pakistan citing security reasons, The Nation reports.

Babri is regarded highly in the Pakistan team, with former coach Geoff Lawson describing him as a ‘terrific asset’ for the squad. (ANI)

Alam banking on ‘shrink’s’ success to bag Pak Twenty20 World Cup

Karachi, May 26 (ANI): Pakistan cricket coach Intikhab Alam believes that his squad is well prepared to handle the pressure during the forthcoming ICC Twenty 20 World Cup starting in June in England.

Alam said players have been benefited from the psychological session held recently, that has made the team ‘mentally’ stronger.

It may be noted that sports psychologist, Maqbool Bari, held one-on-one sessions with the selected players on the sidelines of practice matches recently.

“His (Bari) sessions with the players here were very useful and the basic purpose is to get these players mentally focused on the World Cup and be ready to handle the pressures of such a big event,” The Daily Times quoted Alam, as saying.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has organized such ‘psychological sessions’ in the past, but they hardly had any effect on team’s performance.

Alam said that the main objective of organizing such a camp was to increase the confidence level of players.

“The idea is to improve their focus and increase their self belief. In a big tournament like the World Cup, it is all about pressure and nothing else. The team that handles the pressure the best will win the title,” he said. (ANI)

PCB hires ‘shrink’ to strengthen team’s mental resolve

Lahore, May 13 (ANI): Worried by reports of conflicts and the existence of two factions within the team, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has hired a psychologist to help strengthen the squad’s mental resolve ahead of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.

The PCB is organizing a conditioning camp in the hill resort of Bhurban from tomorrow (Thurday), where the newly appointed psychologist, Dr Maqbool Babri, would work with the team, The Daily Times reports.

“He will hold one-on-one sessions with the players and also conduct group therapy,” coach Intikhab Alam said.

Alam said the camp would help the players to perform better in pressure situation and improve their ability, as the Twenty20 version of the game requires cricketers to give their hundred percent even toughest conditions.

“I think sometimes it is the fear of failing that makes a sportsman crack under pressure. The idea is to improve the self-belief in our players so they can perform to their optimum abilities,” Alam added. (ANI)

The cases that led to Sharif’s disqualification

Islamabad, Feb.26 (ANI): Pakistan’s Supreme Court used verdicts of past cases to arrive at its ruling to disqualify the Sharif brothers from contesting elections.

Sharif’s conviction in the Plane Hijacking Case and Helicopter Case were the primary reasons for his disqualification, The Nations reports.

Sharif was awarded life imprisonment after he was convicted for trying to hijack the aircraft of the then Army chief General Pervez Musharraf on October 12, 1999.

A case was registered against Sharif and his brother Shabaz Sharif alongwith the then Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Ghous Ali Shah, the then Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh Rana Maqbool and the then Chairman, Pakistan International Airlines Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
