Action plan to phase out consumption of HCFC is on track: Ramesh

New Delhi, Sep 16 (ANI): Union Environment and Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday that India has developed a comprehensive Road Map and Action Plan to phase-out of production and consumption of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in various sectors.

Addressing the gathering during the 15th International Ozone Day here Ramesh said: “The Government of India has taken a number of policy measures, fiscal and regulatory, to encourage the early adoption of alternative technologies in this area by existing and new enterprises.”

Ramesh hailed the Montreal Protocol as the most successful international treaty to ever achieve universal participation.

“At a time when the world is trying to solve the problem of climate change, the International Ozone Day provided a timely reminder of how international cooperation can help to solve major global environmental problems,” Ramesh added.

India is one of the first developing countries to join the Montreal Protocol and pledge its commitment to protect the Ozone Layer.

As a part of the accelerated phase-out of CFCs, India has completely phased out the production and consumption of CFCs as on 1 August 2008, 17 months prior to the agreed schedule.

Ramesh informed that over 97percent of controlled Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) have been phased out by the Montreal Protocol.

“The end of 2009 will mark another significant milestone in the history of its implementation, with the use of potent ODSs -CFCs, Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) and Halons, except pharmaceutical-grade CFCs used in the manufacture of Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) – being ceased completely,” he said

The CFCs required for manufacturing for MDIs used by Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients are still available in India, a national transition strategy to phase them out by 2013 is currently under implementation.

“The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the World Bank recently also launched the India: Chiller Energy Efficiency Project to accelerate the conversion of CFC-based chillers using new, more energy efficient technologies,” Ramesh said.

This year’s theme for the ozone day was ‘Universal participation – Ozone protection unifies the World.’ (ANI)

Jacko postpones opening gigs of London comeback tour

London, May 21 (ANI): Michael Jackson has postponed the first four concerts of his comeback tour This Is It UK in London.

The King of Pop, who was due to kick off a much-awaited 50-show run at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena on July 8, said he needed more time for rehearsals to ensure the shows were perfect.

While the opening night has been put back to July 13, three other gigs, previously slated for July 10, 12 and 14, will not be staged until March next year.

Randy Phillips, President of concert promoters AEG Live, said Jackson and his creative director, Kenny Ortega, had prompted the delay.

“Kenny and Michael are, at the same time, both creative pioneers and perfectionists,” the BBC quoted Phillips as saying in a statement.

“This show has grown in size and scope, thereby necessitating more lead time for manufacture of the set, programming the content for the massive video elements, and, most importantly, more time for full production and dress rehearsals,” he added.

Phillips continued: “As much as we agonised over this change in the original schedule, we are sure the fans will understand when they experience the level of entertainment Michael Jackson intends to deliver.”

Ortega apologised to the fans for the rescheduled dates, saying: “We apologise to all disappointed Michael Jackson fans and remain extremely dedicated and focused on creating an exceptional live music experience.”

Although full refunds are being offered to those who cannot make it for the re-arranged gigs, some fans are livid.

Pam A wrote on a Michael Jackson messageboard: “What difference is a week going to make in the grand scheme of things?”

Another fan calling themselves janmic, added: “I had plane tickets booked from Canada. I’m supposed to be returning home on July 9th. I am really not impressed.” (ANI)

Knocking down a gene could prevent fructose-induced insulin resistance

Washington, Mar 4 (ANI): Scientists have found that “knocking down” a gene called transcriptional coactivator PPARg coactivator-1b (PGC-1b) can protect mice on a diet loaded with high-fructose from insulin resistance.

Usually, insulin resistance is induced by diets full of high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener found in most sodas and many other processed foods.

PGC-1b coactivates a number of transcription factors that control the activity of other genes, including one responsible for building fat in the liver.

And thus killing the gene in the animals’ liver and fat tissue can even prevent the ill effects of insulin resistance.

“There has been a remarkable increase in consumption of high-fructose corn syrup. Fructose is much more readily metabolized to fat in the liver than glucose is and in the process can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,” said Gerald Shulman of Yale University School of Medicine.

NAFLD, in turn, leads to hepatic insulin resistance and type II diabetes.

The researchers claimed that the wide and increasing use of high-fructose corn syrup sweeteners had made metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes to reach epidemic proportions worldwide.

It was earlier shown that fructose is more readily converted to fatty acids than glucose, and that there’s a link between high-fructose diets and high blood levels of triglycerides (a condition known as hypertriglyceridemia), NAFLD and insulin resistance. lthough the scientists implicated a gene known as SREBP-1, a master regulator of lipids’ manufacture in the liver, not much was known about the underlying molecular connections between fructose and those metabolic disorders.

In the new study, the researchers focussed on PGC-1b, a gene known for boosting SREBP-1 levels.

For testing its role in the effects of fructose, they blocked its activity in mice fed a diet high in that sugar for four weeks.

The treatments improved the animals’ metabolic profiles by lowering levels of SREBP-1, and other fat-building genes in their livers.

The mice also showed a reversal of their fructose-induced insulin resistance and a threefold increase in glucose uptake in their fat tissue.

“These data support an important role for PGC-1b in the pathogenesis of fructose-induced insulin resistance and suggest that PGC-1b inhibition may be a therapeutic target for treatment of NAFLD, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance associated with increased de novo lipogenesis,” concluded the researchers.

The study has been published in the journal Cell Metabolism. (ANI)

“A major breakthrough would be achieved in the next few days,” The Daily Times quoted Malik, as saying. (ANI)

Centre to set up a regulatory authority for import of medical equipments

New Delhi, Feb 19 (ANI): Union Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal on Thursday addressed an international conference on Medical Electronics, and said the government will set up a regulatory authority soon to stop the import of unreliable medical devices and encourage manufacture of standard medical equipments in the country.

Sibal informed that the legislation was already underway and by the course of next year, it will be in place.

“At this point in time, the legislation is cleared and it is going to the cabinet very soon. So, we will have a regulatory mechanism that will give the kind of incentive that the industry needs to actually move forward in a big way in the manufacture of electronic and medical devices in India,” Sibal said.

Sibal added that the regulatory framework would ensure the availability of treatment facilities through medical devices to the poor people at affordable prices.

“What’s happening in our country today is, because of absence of a legislation in the regulation of such devices and the standardisation of such devices. What we have, is the imported medical equipment and devices both, electronic and otherwise that are sold in a monopoly situation in India. And the result of that is they charge very high prices, unaffordable to the poor in our country,” Sibal said.

Sibal also invited foreign manufacturers of healthcare equipments to set up joint ventures in India, to cater to global and domestic markets.

“There is a great possibility of exporting the products to the rest of the world who need these devices for affordable and accessible healthcare. With the meltdown coming, let me advise my industry friends, who might have come from abroad here, this is a great opportunity for you in India. If you set up joint ventures in India for the purposes and once the regulatory mechanism is in place, you will not only get access to the Indian market, you will also get access to the global market,” Sibal added.

Market for healthcare in India is growing and is expected to continue to grow at 15 percent per annum and with the regulatory mechanism in place the possibilities for expanding the manufacture of these equipments is pegged to grow by leaps and bounds. (ANI)
