Robinho dances to Brazil’s tune

(Reuters) – Robinho’s club career has often been a messy affair punctuated by tantrums, walkouts and long-running transfer sagas.

Sports

His international career, however, could hardly be more different. When in the yellow shirt of Brazil, Robinho has been reliability personified, never complaining and always feeling at home.

One of the few players who performs better for his country than club, the King of the Stepovers has been almost ever-present for Brazil in the four years Dunga has been coach.

His only moan since Brazil arrived in South Africa is that his team mates cannot follow his goal celebrations.

“There are a lot of stiff waists in the team — Kaka, Luis Fabuloso,” he said. “I want to see if they can dance a little better.”

Robinho burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old with Santos in 2002 when his precocious dribbling helped them win the Brazilian championship.

One of the most replayed moments of his career came in the final against Corinthians when he performed seven stepovers before provoking a defender into giving away a penalty.

But he fell out with Santos three years later when they initially refused to sell him to Real Madrid. Robinho boycotted training sessions in protest before the move finally went through.

His three seasons with Real ended in a similar fashion, an unsavoury transfer saga finally landing him at Manchester City rather than Chelsea, the team he had publicly stated he had wanted to join.

Despite scoring plenty of goals for City, Robinho never seemed happy in England and at one stage was fined for walking out on a training camp in the Canary Islands.

At the start of this year, he was loaned back to Santos and, despite clearly enjoying himself on his return home, is now in the middle of yet more speculation about his club future, with Turkey’s Besiktas appearing a possible buyer.

Yet, while all this has been going on, Robinho’s international career has flourished.

He was top scorer with six goals when Brazil won the Copa America three years ago and has also won two Confederations Cup medals with his country.

He played in 15 of Brazil’s 18 World Cup qualifiers, missing only the last three when the team had already qualified. Still only 26, he has already played 73 internationals, scoring an impressive 25 goals.

Even when playing for Brazil there is still something of a “moleque” — which roughly translates as naughty schoolboy — about him. After a 3-0 win in Chile, he admitted daubing a message to his hosts on the dressing-room wall.

It read: “There must be respect for the best team in the world.”

Robinho has looked sharp in Brazil’s warm-up matches, scoring once in the 3-0 win in Zimbabwe and twice in the 5-1 demolition of Tanzania.

One of only four forwards in their 23-man squad, he is also one of the few capable of unlocking a defense with a moment of individual inspiration.

Former striker Tostao said that the World Cup is a chance for Robinho to finally fulfill the potential he has shown in flashes throughout his career but which he has been unable to produce on a consistent basis.

“Robinho has given signs that he can shine in the World Cup and stand out in world football,” said Tostao in his newspaper column.

“With the exception of Robinho, the Brazilian team today has very little individual inspiration,” he wrote. “But Robinho has always had talent.”

Torres to stay with Liverpool next season, says agent

London, May 26(ANI): Liverpool’s prospects of retaining the services of striker Fernando Torres have been boosted after the player’s agent said that Torres has no desire to leave the club.

“For the moment I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season,” The Sun quoted Jose Antonio Peton, Torres’ manager, as saying.

Torres had earlier emerged as a 50 million-pound rated transfer target for Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez and the club’s ability to strengthen the Anfield squad, Peton said that Torres remains happy at the club.

“Everything is down to Liverpool’s attitude, but for the time being, Fernando is happy at the club and has a good contract,” Peton said.

“Liverpool have not spoken to us about his future, so he is just concentrating on playing at the World Cup,” he added. (ANI)

Ribery likely snub Premier League giants’ overtures to stay with Bayern Munich

London, May 21(ANI): Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery is likely to turn his back on the English Premier League and sign a four-year contract extension with the German club.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been linked with Ribery, with talk of bids in excess of 50 million pounds, The Sun reports.

However, Ribery may snub the clubs and sign the new contract until 2015, with a new club-record salary after Munich’s Champions League final against Inter Milan on Saturday.

The 27-year-old is expected to formally announce his decision before flying out to South Africa for the World Cup. (ANI)

Chelsea joins Manchester City for Milner bid

London, May 21(ANI): Premier League champions Chelsea has joined Manchester City in the fight to sign Aston Villa midfielder James Milner.

Milner has two years left on his 40,000 pounds-a-week contract, but Villa manager Martin O’Neill wants to open talks on a new deal after the World Cup.

Chelsea insiders claim that the club is ready to go the distance for Milner after missing out to City on Brazilian striker Robinho two summers ago.

“Losing out to City for Robinho was embarrassing at the time, even if it did turn out to be a lucky escape,” The Sun quoted a Chelsea insider, as saying.

“But we are determined to get our man this time and we are very confident it will happen,” he added.

City are believed to have had an initial bid of 25 million pounds rejected by Villa, and have tabled a second offer of 30 million pounds. (ANI)

Aston Villa rejects Man City’s 25-mn pound bid for Milner

London, May 20 (ANI): Aston Villa has rejected Manchester City 25 million pound bid for James Milner, and now plans to negotiate a new long-term deal with the England midfield ace.

The Sun reports that Villa boss Martin O’Neill would still struggle to hold on to the player.

The deal was worth an initial 20 million pounds with a further five million pounds of add-ons for success and appearances.

Both Villa owner Randy Lerner and manager O’Neill have been adamant that Milner, 24, is not for sale.

In a statement Villa said: “We have received an offer from Manchester City and this has been firmly rejected. We plan to sit down with James and his representative after the World Cup to agree a new, long-term deal.”

Milner learned of City’s move on Wednesday at England’s training camp in Austria, the paper said.

Mancini has up to 150 million pounds to spend this summer as he tries to build a side for a Premier League title push next season, it adds. (ANI)

Man City bosses ditch Feng Shui

After the ancient Chinese superstition failed to help Manchester City qualify for the Champions League, club bosses have ditched the use of Feng Shui.

Billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour has ordered his staff to dig up mystic charms buried under the pitch by former club chief Thaksin Shinawatra, The Sun reports.

The ex-Thai PM placed magic crystals and porcelain elephants there in 2008.

Their arrangement was meant to energise players and create harmony at the City of Manchester stadium.

But they didn’t bring the expected success for Carlos Tevez and other City stars, as the club finished fifth in this year’s Premier League, the paper reports.

Some superstitious fans want the charms to stay. One said: “We can’t complain about home form the last couple of years that’s for sure.”

Man City’s 80-mn pounds package for Gerrard and Torres

London, May 16 (ANI): To bring two of the best players in the Premier League to Eastlands, Manchester City is ready to give Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland as part of a 80 million pounds package for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

City’s only fear is that the pair will only leave Liverpool for another team in the Champions League.

Adebayor has been unhappy at City for most of the season and Ireland has failed to make an impact after winning last season’s player of the year award.

City is determined to make their mark in the summer transfer, as Gerrard and Torres are proven performers, News of the World reports.

Chelsea is also confident of getting Torres as part of a British record transfer fee; as they cannot offer players in exchange.

City’s bid for the Liverpool duo is ambitious, but they believe they are putting forward a solution to the Kop’s financial problems, the paper reports. (ANI)

Abramovich backs Ancelotti’s move to have Kaka at Chelsea

London, May 16 (ANI): Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will be awarding coach Carlo Ancelotti for winning Double title by backing his move to have Kaka at the club.

Ancelotti is a huge admirer of Kaka, who last year turned down a move to Manchester City.

Instead, Kaka headed to Real Madrid in a 56 million pounds switch from AC Milan but his first season in La Liga has been a troubled one, News of the World reports.

Kaka has been dogged by injury and has had to angrily deny rumours that he was more concerned about being fit for the World Cup than for Real Madrid’s domestic campaign.

Ancelotti is encouraged by rumours in his pursuit for Kaka.

The pair had a very successful, six-year relationship and won the Champions League together in 2007.

Abramovich has sanctioned to tighten the purse at Chelsea and that might be reflected in upcoming contract negotiations with the likes of Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka.

And the Russian owner is hopeful that talent from the academy will push through in the next couple of seasons.

But after the outstanding domestic season, he still wants Chelsea to win the Champions League and knows he needs to back Ancelotti and give him the financial tools to compete with the superpowers in the transfer market, News of the World reports. (ANI)

Rooney voted best footballer by Writers’ Association

London, May 14 (ANI): Manchester United ace striker Wayne Rooney won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award and said that he wants to become a top-class manager.

Rooney got record percentage of votes from journalists with just over 81 percent of votes cast, finishing ahead of Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez to win the prestigious award.

Rooney received his award at the FWA’s gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on Thursday evening, The Telegraph reports.

Rooney, who scored 34 goals in all competitions this term, admitted it was a privilege to follow the likes of Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton to be named Footballer of the Year, and revealed he intended to stay involved in the game for many years to come.

“I would like to (step into management). I joined Everton when I was nine years old and football has been a massive part of my life. When you do stop playing, I want to be involved in football,” Rooney said.

“I started doing my coaching badges this year, and probably did not do as many classes as I would have liked. Hopefully I can continue them next year. I love football and enjoy football – I can’t see myself running a restaurant, I want to be in football,” he said.

“But now I am only 24. Hopefully I can progress and the best years are still ahead of me. I am always learning every day, and take things in from all my teammates. As a player you are never the finished article. I want to keep learning and getting better.”

Rooney’s immediate plans are to focus on the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. (ANI)

Mancini to get 150-mn pounds to boost Man City

London, May 14 (ANI): Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour has given manager Roberto Mancini a mandate for change at the club.

Sheikh Mansour told Mancini to set up a team that can bring City out of failure and win silverware.

Mancini will have anything up to 150 million pounds to achieve the dream of a Premier League title, The Sun reports.

The fact City has failed to win anything since the 1976 League Cup makes the challenge tough for Mancini.

He believes City has already shown they can match the top three of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Mancini said: “We were very strong against all of them this season. It shows we have a good mentality – and this is important.” (ANI)

Chelsea, Man City in a race to get ace striker Torres

London, May 11 (ANI): Chelsea is all set to match Manchester City in order to get Spanish striker Fernando Torres this summer.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has been given the go-ahead to bid for 50 million pounds-rated Liverpool striker Torres.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “If it was good for the club then we can make an exception to buy a marquee player.”

“We have to challenge for trophies. We have a good squad and don’t feel we are required to spend a huge amount.

“It’s a balancing act between keeping to our strategy of trying to become self-sufficient and improving the team,” The Sun quoted Gourlay, as syaing.

“However, we want to let our on-field success drive our commercial income and any decision about signings will be made by Ancelotti,” he said.

“There is a balance to be had between young players coming through from the academy and those players that we might sign,” Gourlay added. (ANI)

Man City plotting 40 m pound move for Gerrard

London, May 10 (ANI): Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is in Manchester City”s sights.

The Mirror has reported that mega bucks City’s Arab rulers have given the go-ahead for a 40 million pound bid for the England star as soon as possible.

Gerrard’s future has been in doubt because of the Anfield”s financial troubles, and City’s up-front money may be too much to refuse for the club”s beleaguered owners.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez may reluctantly accept a sale if he is given assurances that he will get the funds to transform a squad that has missed out on the Champions League.

But when Benitez was asked if Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres wanted to stay he admitted: “That’s a question for them.”

The final word will be with Gerrard, who is 30 in three weeks’ time and has been a Kop idol since his teens. (ANI)

Mancini says Torres bid may be out of reach after Champions League flop

London, May 10 (ANI): Coach Roberto Mancini has admitted that Manchester City”s Champions League flop could ruin the club’s bid to sign Liverpool striker Fernando Torres this summer.

City is reported to have come up with a bid of 45 million pounds for the Spanish marksman, The Sun reports, but Mancini believes the offer of a Europa League football next season may not be enough to attract Torres and other big-name stars to join his club.

“Can we attract the top, top players, like Torres? I don”t know, but I don”t think so. If we finished in the top four, it would be better and easier to attract them,” Mancini said.

“But there are a lot of players in Europe who will want to play for Manchester City next year. We won”t be playing in the Champions League but we must try to win the other competitions and finish in the top four in the Premier League,” he added. (ANI)

Man City reposes faith in Mancini

London, May 7 (ANI): Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi based owner Sheikh Mansour will give coach Roberto Mancini the cash to launch another major bid to regain a place in the top four of the English Premier League.

Mancini’s position at City immediately came under scrutiny after the club’s Champions League dream ended on Wednesday night, but chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak quickly endorsed him.

Sheikh Mansour has already spent over 220 million pounds on players. And Khaldoon said: “We have to move on and give Roberto all the tools he needs in order to be well prepared for next season.”

“There should be no speculation. Roberto is our manager and has done an excellent job after coming here in mid-season,” The Sun quoted Khaldoon, as saying.

“I’m very happy with Roberto and Sheikh Mansour is delighted with the way he has organised the team. I believe Roberto is going to do a wonderful job for many years.

“That’s why we brought him to the club. I have the highest respect for Roberto as a manager and person. He is driven, committed and has a winning mentality. He wants to achieve things for the club,” he said.

“He has the interests of the club at heart and he is definitely the right manager for this club for many years. I think that what he needs this summer is time to prepare,” Khaldoon said.

Mancini was set a target of 70 points for the season after replacing Mark Hughes in December, but 1-0 loss to Spurs means City will reach 69 if they win their final game at West Ham on Sunday. (ANI)

Tottenham stars can win World Cup for England

London, May 7 (ANI): Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp believes eight of his stars, if selected, can help make Fabio Capello”s England squad win next month’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The Sun quoted Redknapp, as saying: “I honestly think Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas will be in Capello”s first squad of 30.

“I”d love 2010 to go down as the year Tottenham won the World Cup with the amount of players they could supply for Fabio Capello”s crack at the big one.

“I started with six England players when Tottenham clinched fourth place at Manchester City. I then brought on Bentley and I still had Jenas sitting on the bench, who has already played 21 times for his country. That would be by a long way the most players any single club will provide for Capello”s search for the ultimate international honour,” Redknapp said. (ANI)

Capello blames ‘non spending’ for absence of English clubs in Champions League

London, May 6 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has said that failure to strengthen the team by big Premier League clubs is the reason behind no England representation in the Champions League semi-finals.

Liverpool’s 30 million pounds sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid disturbed their central midfield play, while Manchester United cashed in on 80 million pounds Cristiano Ronaldo and let Carlos Tevez sign up for bitter rivals Manchester City.

Arsenal dumped Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, earning 50 million pounds, and Chelsea acquired no big players. And the few who were signed by Premier League clubs, have largely failed to live up to their fees, The Sun reports.

Capello will be benefited and his England stars will get a decent rest before the World Cup starts on June 11.

“It is always better to have players who have been winning than ones unhappy because the national championship or the Champions League went wrong. Liverpool sold players and those who arrived did not meet expectations,” Capello said.

“Arsenal is unlucky. They also sold some players, didn’t get any others and important ones who were left were injured at key moments. United sold Ronaldo and Tevez and the players they bought instead are maybe not as good,” he added.

“Chelsea did buy Zhirkov but then nothing more. None of those teams strengthened. In England, only Manchester City did,” he added. (ANI)

Tevez hopeful of working with Mancini next season

London, May 5 (ANI): Manchester City’s star striker Carlos Tevez is hopeful of working with club’s coach Roberto Mancini next season.

The relationship between the City coach and Tevez has come under the spotlight since the Argentinean reportedly complained about the training regime last month.

“Of course I would really like him to continue here. I would like all of us to stay and continue with this ambitious project which we have started,” Tevez said.

“The manager has given me the continuity that every player needs to produce his best. He helped me recover my confidence,” said Tevez, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

“Thanks to the coach and my team-mates, things have worked well for me this season and it’s the reason I have achieved such a high level, The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Tevez would love to break through the 30-goal barrier tonight while pushing City into the top four of the Premier League.

“We are a team that is growing together. We are happy with what we’ve done so far but we know this is our greatest challenge. Now the last part comes, we know it will be tough but we’ll try hard. We are very confident,” he said. (ANI)

Tough task for Liverpool to keep Torres

London, May 4 (ANI): Liverpool is faced with a tough task of preventing ace striker Fernando Torres from leaving the club in the biggest transfer scramble, as Juventus has also urged coach Rafa Benitez to make up his mind on whether he will become their new boss.

Manchester City and Chelsea will lead the 70 million pound summer transfer for Torres, who is concerned at Liverpool’s dismal performance and inability to compete for titles.

“A club like Liverpool must do everything they can to keep players like Stevie Gerrard and Fernando, but a lot of things can change and in a few weeks we will know better,” said Liverpool player Yossi Benayoun.

Benitez this week meets Anfield chairman Martin Broughton for talks, with Juventus president Andrea Agnelli seeking an answer, the Daily Express reports.

Agnelli could turn to Fiorentina’s Cesare Prandelli if he feels Benitez is using them.

A Juventus source said: “The new president is less keen on Benitez, especially because he has strung the situation out for so long. He expects a decision this week so he can get on with planning for the future.”

Benitez could deny Juventus’ offer if he is given guarantees that he can reinvest any money raised from outgoings this summer. (ANI)

Awards continue to rack up for injured Rooney

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney claimed his second major award of a remarkable season on Friday when he was named Footballer of the Year for the first time by the Football Writers Association (FWA).

Rooney, who has scored 34 goals for United in all competitions this season, took 80 percent of the votes cast by members of the FWA.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was a distant second in the voting with Manchester City’s Argentine frontman Carlos Tevez in third position.

“I am delighted to win an award with so much history and tradition and to follow a long line of wonderful players who have been honoured by the FWA since 1948 gives me real pride,” Rooney said.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank my manager at United Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching staff and my team mates without whose help and support this award would not have been possible.”

Rooney, who was voted PFA Player of the Year on Sunday and also the Premier League’s fans Player of the Season this week, has successfully filled the void left by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid although the tail end of his season has been interrupted by injury.

He is unlikely to play in United’s final two Premier League games as they try and overhaul Chelsea at the top of the table because of a groin strain having recovered quicker than expected from an ankle injury.

“Wayne is a worthy winner of our prestigious award and the margin of his victory is testimony to the marvellous season he has had for club and country,” FWA chairman Steve Bates said on announcing the award.

“His tally of 34 goals so far this season is certain to have captured the attention of our members but I am sure the overall improvement in his game at Manchester United has been of equal significance.

“Wayne’s enthusiasm, hunger and desire mark him out as a special player and we hope he can carry his club form on to the international stage in the World Cup this summer and help England achieve their dream.”

Rooney will be presented with his trophy in London on May 13.
