Non-UPA CMs join hands to fight ‘overbearing’ Centre

NEW DELHI: The battle lines for a states versus Centre faceoff got sharply drawn on Monday when non-UPA chief ministers – including Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik, Gujarat’s Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu’s J Jayalalithaa – got together for an unsched

uled meeting here to work out a common line on contentious issues. While this was the main purpose of the meeting, there was talk of this coordination developing into a common strategy for the coming presidential election.

On Centre-state issues, the three chief ministers are likely to find common grounds with Bihar’s Nitish Kumar, West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee and Punjab’s Parkash Singh Badal. These CMs launched a blistering attack on the Congress-led UPA government at a meeting on internal security, accusing the Centre of meddling in states’ affairs by seeking to arm the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) with police powers and proposing intrusive changes in the Border Security Force Act.

Ironically, the attack came on a day when both PM Manmohan Singh and home minister P Chidambaram sought to avoid stepping on corns by emphasizing and accepting the need for the Centre to work with the states. But the diplomatic approach did not prevent non-UPA CMs from hitting out at the Centre.

The three CMs were not together for long, but the deliberate media exposure of the interaction at Tamil Nadu House pointed to a political subtext beyond a meeting of minds on opposing the Centre over initiatives seen to be an intrusion on state turf.

Sources said while the discussions on Monday centred on the need to prevent the Centre from pushing through proposals giving intelligence outfits nationwide search and seizure powers and oppose “misuse” of central agencies, the likelihood of cooperation for the forthcoming presidential election is on the cards.

The leaders agreed to continue their cooperation on federal issues and this could grow into a shared strategy on a presidential nominee although much will depend on Congress’s choice for Rashtrapati Bhawan. Congress is aware that it will need the support of parties like the SP, BSP and Trinamool and could opt for a nominee who is hard to oppose.

Opposing UPA over federal issues provides a ground for regional parties like Naveen Patnaik’s BJD to interact with BJP while state satraps like Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar are in touch over the past few months, beginning with the chorus against the Lokpal bill’s lokayukta provisions during last year’s winter session of Parliament.

The Tamil Nadu CM enjoys a good equation with Modi and Jayalalithaa’s recent meeting with leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley is also seen in the context of an anti-Congress grouping. Patnaik was careful in maintaining his meeting was in the nature of a courtesy call and Modi offered no comment, but AIADMK sources said the Centre’s “attack on federalism” was discussed.

Earlier in the day, Modi delivered a hard-hitting speech at the conference on internal security, saying the NCTC controversy was part of a “series of unsavuory episodes” and the Centre was “meddling with subjects under the state list”.

Jayalalithaa went a step further to say that states were “glorified municipal corporations” in the Centre’s view. The tough talk saw Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot criticize the opposition CMs for trying to gain “cheap popularity” during a serious discussion on internal security. The Congress spokesperson dismissed questions on a “fourth front” as a mirage.

The three CMs received support from their counterparts from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar. Jayalalithaa warned against an “emerging pattern” wherein the state’s powers were “abrogated” by the Centre through passage of bills and accused it of showing “scant respect” for state governments. She added that the lack of consultation with states and failure to take states in to confidence was a “cogent commentary” on the system of governance in the Centre.

Modi took exception to the Centre’s claim that 97% of intelligence had been generated by the Multi-Agency Centre and only 3% had been contributed by states, sarcastically asking whether the responsibility for the inputs would be accepted in a similar proportion. He ran down central inputs that sent state agencies on wild goose chases.

In his address, Patnaik sought urgent consultations between the Centre and the states over issues like the NCTC, saying any delay would affect handling of law and order. He referred to the ongoing hostage crisis in the state saying that the delay in discussing NCTC had been dangerous.

Trinamool to stay with UPA govt for full tenure: Mamata

Making it clear that Trinamool Congress would remain a “trusted” ally of UPA government for its full tenure, party chief Mamata Banerjee has kept her cards close to her chest on an alliance with Congress for the West Bengal Assembly polls, saying that “nothing is closed”.

“I will speak on what is happening today. I will not speak about the future. We have gone to the people when all others had left us and they (people) have supported us. When opportunity comes in the future, we will speak. Nothing is closed,” Banerjee said in an interview after her party’s triumph in civic polls which it fought without a tie-up with the Congress.

“When the UPA-II government was formed, we as an ally made a commitment to remain in it for five years. We will stay unless we are pushed out,” Banerjee said.

55-year-old Banerjee, however, said, “those who are saying that we are not to be trusted, should understand that we are more trusted then anybody else. There cannot be comparison between our commitment and those of others. We only want love and respect.”

Stating that the Left parties were the main allies of the UPA-I before they quit on the nuclear deal issue, she said her party will remain in UPA-II “as long as CPI(M) is not there.

“If there are relations with the CPI(M) we cannot stay. We cannot co-exist with the CPI(M) just as and DMK and AIADMK cannot coexist,” the TC supremo, whose party is the second largest ally in the UPA with 19 MPs, said.

On her ties with the UPA, the Railway Minister said that there should be reciprocity “in the way we love and respect them. We also want a reciprocal gesture. We don’t want anything more than that.”

Describing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as “a good man and a gentleman”, she said, “We have got all his blessings and support. He is a good administrator. He has information about who is doing what.”

Asked about a senior Congress leader saying in the acrimonious run-up to the civic polls that alliance could not be made at the cost of the party, she said, “I respect senior leaders of the Congress.

“I have no comment. Anybody can make some comment. It is their prerogative and their choice.”

On suggestions by a section of Bengal Congress leaders that the party could not be written off because of the the civic poll outcome and was in a position for seat-sharing on honourable terms with the Trinamool for the 2011 assembly polls, she said, “They got the verdict of the people. The verdict itself speaks about performance.”

To a question on CPI(M) Politburo member Biman Bose’s statement that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee would not step down and there was no question of advancing the assembly elections, she reiterated, “We are in favour of the early elections.

She accused the CPI(M) of raising the bogey of post-poll violence.

“If there was violence, it would have erupted within 72 hours,” she said when asked about CPI(M) statement that the chief minister had skipped the CPI(M) Politburo meeting in New Delhi to control post-poll violence in in the state.

“That there was no post-poll violence, credit should go to us since we have told our workers not to take out victory processions maintain restraint. By raising the bogey of violence, the ruling party is trying to instigate violence.”

BJP slams Mamata, CPM for spat, seeks PM intervention

Taking a strong exception to the political war of words between the Trinamool Congress and CPM over the Jnaneswari Express disaster, the Opposition BJP on Sunday came down heavily on Railways Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and sought Prime Minister’s intervention in the matter.

The BJP criticised the slug fest between Trinamool and CPM to score political brownie points with West Bengal elections in mind.

“Both Trinamool Congress’s Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and CPM, which is heading the state government, have failed in providing quick relief to the train disaster victims. Both of them are engaged in a political match over the issue with an eye on the Assembly elections in the state,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said, adding, “We condemn the carelessness towards the relief and rescue work that is being seen there even after 72 hours after the incident.”

Javdekar came down particularly against the Railways Minister for jumping to conclusions in an apparent attempt the counter the Left charge against her. “The Railway Minister has forgotten Railway security and appears more inclined to give a clean chit to Maoists, which is highly irresponsible. When the probe is yet to happen, how could she come to know that there is no Maoist hand into the incident,” he said. “If UPA ministers work like this, it will be a betrayal of the mandate. This will only embolden Maoists. Prime Minister should see that this does not happen.”

Mystery over track, CM okay with CBI probe

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has verbally conveyed to the Centre his approval for a CBI inquiry into the Jnaneswari Express carnage after no explosives were discovered at the site of the mishap. Investigations are needed to ascertain how a nearly foot-long chunk of the rail track was cut by suspected Maoists in a matter of 27 minutes.

Government sources told The Indian Express that while police and security agencies have been asked to trace the vital missing rail track, the Research Design Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways has been handed over a portion of the remaining rail track to find out how it was cut by suspected Maoists.

While Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has called the entire incident a “political conspiracy” before the state civic polls, the Centre is also intrigued by intercepts received from the Maoist communication network. These indicate that Maoist leaders initially wanted to take responsibility for the attack after they heard of a goods train being targeted at Sardiha. However, they decided to deny any hand after they heard that the attack was on the Jnaneswari Express and scores of innocents lives had been lost.

Contrary to reports, the Central agencies have not found evidence of any explosives or gas cutters and are trying to determine how a portion made of toughened steel was removed in just 27 minutes — the time between passage of the last train (12.43 am) on the track and the collision between the derailed Jnaneswari Express (1.10 am) and the goods train. According to top government officials, a total of five trains passed on that track an hour before the incident.

One possibility being explored is the use of a chemical to systematically corrode the track.

The Home Ministry is expected to formally write to the state government on Monday for the inquiry. The Department of Personnel and Training will be asked to issue the notification after a formal approval has been obtained.

Maoist hand suspected in train disaster: Chidambaram

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Home Minister P. Chidambaram Monday said the Communist Party of India-Maoist was being suspected for the sabotage that caused the train accident in Jhargram in West Bengal Friday in which at least 150 passengers were killed.

‘The needle of suspicion points to the CPI-Maoist or its front organisation. The identity of the culprits can be established only after the investigation is over,’ Chidambaram told reporters here.

The home minister’s remark is contrary to what Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged – that her political rivals had conspired to cause the accident ahead of Sunday’s civic polls in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress chief has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the ‘political conspiracy’ behind the accident.

Chidambaram said the railway ministry had sought a CBI probe and the home ministry was awaiting a response from the the state government over it.

‘The ministry of railways has suggested a CBI inquiry. We have asked the West Bengal government’s views. We have not received their views,’ the home minister said.

The home minister also contradicted Banerjee, who had said that explosives were used to damage the railway track that led to derailment of the Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express early Friday. The engine and 13 coaches of the train derailed. Five coaches rolled on to a parallel track and were hit by a freight train in the Maoist stronghold in West Midnapore district.

‘There is no trace of explosives,’ Chidambaram said.

‘The West Bengal government has on record said that there were no traces of explosives. Prima facie it appears that the tracks were cut and the pandrol clips removed,’ Chidambaram said.

Mamata should quit as railway minister: CPI-M

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee should quit on account of her ‘good relationship’ with Maoists, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said Monday.

Accusing the minister of having a ‘good relationship’ with those who derailed a train in West Bengal killing at least 145 people, CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia asked the Trinamool Congress chief to resign from the cabinet on moral grounds.

‘She (Mamata) has no moral right to continue as a member of the union cabinet. She enjoys good relations with the Maoists as well as the leaders of the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA), the frontal organisation of the Maoists,’ Acharia told IANS.

He accused Banerjee of protecting the Maoist leaders, who he said were to blame for the derailment of the Howrah-Kurla Gyaneshwari Express in Jhargram in West Bengal Friday.

‘It is the duty of the Railway Protection Force to oversee the safety of the tracks in Maoist areas. They failed to do it. The minister failed to act on time. I’ve not seen such a dismal performance by any other railway minister,’ said Acharia, who heads the CPI-M in the Lok Sabha.

‘Mamata is the worst railway minister the country has ever seen.’ he said.

‘Now the media has interviewed the real mastermind, a PCAPA leader, who has admitted his role in the accident.’

On Saturday, Banerjee demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the train disaster, calling it a political conspiracy ahead of Sunday’s civic polls.

The CPI-M leader, who was chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on railways in the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, said the railways failed to provide security to its passengers.

A day after municipal elections in West Bengal, the veteran MP claimed that the Left Front, which suffered a huge setback in West Bengal in the 2009 general elections, would improve its tally in the civic polls.

‘We are expecting an improvement over the Lok Sabha election,’ he said. The civic poll results will be declared Wednesday.

CPI-M snubs Mamata Banerjee”s allegations over West Bengal train mishap

New Delhi/Kolkata, May 29 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Saturday rubbished Railway Minister Mamata Banrejee”s charges against CPI-M with regard to Friday”s Gyaneshwari Express train mishap, asserting that she is covering up the lapses of her ministry into the incident.

Yechury said it is the duty of the Railway Minister to inform about the preliminary observations on the cause of the derailment.

“She has rather chosen to shield the actual culprits by suggesting that Maoists may not be behind the sabotage. It is clear that the Railway Minister is seeking to cover up the serious lapses of her leadership in the ministry and its failings in this tragic episode,” said Yechury.

“Banerjee is focusing on the civic elections in West Bengal, instead of the train mishap,” he added.

Earlier today, Banerjee demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the mishap, and said the mishap was part of a political conspiracy hatched against her.

The CPM should not indulge in politics, let the state government speed up the probe,” she had said.

Banerjee also informed that the Railways would also investigate the incident independently.

“Let the investigation be complete, whoever is found guilty will be punished severely,” Banerjee said.

Attacking the ruling CPI-M in West Bengal , she alleged that the state government did not co-operate during rescue operations.

Banerjee said many questions still remained unanswered over the incident, but maintained that an explosion caused the sabotage of the rail tracks.

“This is an heinous crime,” she said.

Meanwhile, the death toll has risen to 120, as more bodies were pulled out from the wreckage of the mangled coaches.

Over 3000 security force personnel were reported to be involved in the rescue operations.

“It will take eight to ten hours more to clean up the track as the tracks are broken. The coaches of the train are lying beside the track but the tracks are damaged,” said Jaladhar Shastri, railway worker. (ANI)

Busy with Bengal politics, her ministry off Mamata’s track

Days after the BJP hit out at railway minister Mamata Banerjee for her prolonged absence in New Delhi, the Trinamul Congress leader on Friday faced sharp criticism again from her former allies and the Left Front after the Jnaneshwari superfast express derailed near Jhargram. The critics say she had put rail safety on hold for Bengal politics.

As 81 municipalities of the state are going for civic polls, Banerjee had been busy throughout the month attending more than a hundred rallies in different parts of the state. Banerjee was present in New Delhi only for one day this month to attend the anniversary of the UPA-II. “We have been receiving requests for holding a rally from supporters from every district. Local leaders have been pressing her to attend the rallies ” said a TMC leader.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay, the leader of party in Parliament, declined to comment on the issue. “I have not spoken to Mamata Banerjee on the issue, so I will not comment on it,” he said. Union minister of state for shipping Mukul Roy also avoided phone calls. There have been three more attacks by the Maoists in just one month. While two of them were in West Midnapore, one was in Bihar.

Banerjee said a patrol engine had passed through the area half-an-hour earlier, but that the blast timing was disastrous and blew off a portion of the track. BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad demanded that Banerjee devote ‘full attention’ to her ministry.

Left, Mamata try to corner each other

Kolkata, May 29 — With municipal polls across West Bengal scheduled for Sunday, both the ruling Left Front and Trinamool Congress sought to use Friday’s tragedy to score political points. As Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is also Union railway minister, the CPI(M) lost no time in demanding her resignation over the railway disaster.

The Railways, it said, had clearly failed to check tracks closely in a Maoist area, despite regulations to that effect. “The railway minister should accept responsibility,” said CPM state secretary, Biman Bose.

Banerjee in turn, rushing to the accident spot, demanded a central enquiry as she had no faith in the Left Front ruling the state. “It is very unfortunate so many innocent lives have been lost.

We should not play games with innocent lives,” she said, without directly blaming the Maoists. Though the official statements of both the CPM and Left Front made no reference to it, some CPM leaders did not hesitate to refer to Banerjee’s alleged proximity to Maoists.

The rebels had supported her during Banerjee’s campaign against forcible land acquisition in Nandigram. “Mamata Banerjee has never been critical of the Maoists.

Even today she did not criticise them, though so many innocent lives have been lost,” said Mohammed Salim, former MP and CPM central committee member. Banerjee has often claimed that the ‘terrorism’ of the Left Front cadres is worse than the Naxal menace.

Despite deadlock, Patil hopeful about passage of Women’s Reservation Bill

On Board Air India One, May 26 (ANI): Despite the deadlock in the Lok Sabha over the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has said that she is hopeful about its passage.

Speaking to reporters enroute to Beijing on Wednesday, Patil said: “I wish that the Women’s Reservation Bill is passed in the Lok Sabha.”

Now, it is to be seen how the UPA Government, which has still four years in power, manages the requisite support for the passage of the Bill,” she added.

The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with help of marshals who prevented some members of the opposition from disturbing the process.

Parliamentarians of the ruling party and the opposition, however, have said that they are against its forceful passage.

It has been more than a decade since the Bill was first introduce in Parliament (1996-97).

Last month, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presided over an all-party meeting to discuss the Bill, but failed to reach or arrive at a consensus on it.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav proved to be the main opponents of the Bill in its present form.

Lalu Prasad has demanded a quota for Muslim and Dalit women, and women of other backward castes.

At that time Lalu said he was grateful to the government for calling an all-party meeting on the issue, but reiterated his commitment to have Muslim, backward and Dalit women included in the ambit of the Bill

“Our stand has not changed,” Lalu said then

After the meetiing, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Bill would look after the interests of the minorities.

Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav also demanded a quota within a quota.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has supported the bill.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is demanding that the Bill be passed in its present form.

The Rajya Sabha had last month passed a Constitution Amendment Bill that provides for 33 per cent reservation of women in Parliament and state assemblies.

President Patil is visiting China from May 26-31 and will hold discussions with the Chinese leadership.

Commenting on her visit, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China, President Patil said her visit is part of the process of high-level contacts between the two countries.

President Patil said that Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to India in 2006 had generated a great deal of goodwill between the two countries, and added, that during the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to China in 2008, the two countries concluded a “Shared Vision for the 21st Century” which forms the basis for bilateral cooperation on global issues.

She also said that India and China are two large and populous countries and both of them are focussed on enhancing economic growth and social progress, so there are many areas in which the two countries can exchange views and learn from each other”s experiences. (ANI)

Mamata for early Assembly polls in Bengal

Kolkata, May 13 (ANI): Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has sought early Assembly elections in West Bengal.

Talking to reporters here, Banerjee said West Bengal could have Assembly polls by this year itself, instead of May 2011 as scheduled.

She said she was confident about the Trinamool sweeping them.

However, Left Front leaders say the demand cannot be accommodated for want of Constitutional provisions.

“There is no possibility of early elections. The schedule cannot be changed as it does not depend on the whims of a political leader, said CPM spokesman Benoy Konar.

A section of the CPM leadership believes that all forms of alliance between the Congress and the Trinamool will collapse, if the elections are held as per schedule. (ANI)

We are still a part of UPA: Mamata Banerjee We are still a part of UPA: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, May 6 (ANI): Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has reiterated that her party is still a part of the UPA coalition at the Centre despite snapping ties with the Congress party for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls.

Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Banerjee said: “We made commitments to support the UPA government. We had the commitment that we would be part of the UPA government if we would win the Parliamentary elections. We have been working according to our commitment.”

Mamata claimed that she and her party have always tried to maintain the alliance and worked hard accordingly.

She, however, virtually accused the Congress of being an unreliable ally which had even formed a government with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) in the past.
All this, even as she lured state Congress working president Subrata Mukherjee into the Trinamool fold, signaling a coup ahead of the civic polls in Bengal on May 30.

Mukherjee had resigned from his post and joined TMC on the contention the Congress party had shown soft corner for the ruling Left Front in the state.

On May 2, while announcing candidates for all 141 seats in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, Banerjee had blamed the Congress party, which has already released a list of 88 candidates, for the collapse of alliance in the civic polls.

The break-up between the TMC and the Congress party for the Kolkata civic polls is a dent to the consolidation of an anti-communist front in the state. (ANI)

Motormen”s strike: Lok Sabha adjourns till 5.30 pm

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): With the debate over the indefinite strike by railway motormen refusing to die down, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar was forced to adjourn proceedings till 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

While, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy said a statement would be made in the House by 6 p.m., the opposition demanded a statement by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier, the house was adjourned twice-once at 12 p.m. and second time at 2 pm on the issue.

Earlier, immediately after completion of obituary reference, Shiv Sena members trooped into the well flashing placards ”Mumbai comes to a grinding halt” and sought to raise the issue of railway motormen strike.

Shiv Sena members trooped into the well flashing placards ”Mumbai comes to a grinding halt” and sought to raise the issue of the motormen strike.

AIADMK members also stormed into the well waving copies of a newspaper that carried reports on the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

They demanded resignation of Communications Minister and DMK leader A Raja.

With members unrelenting, the Speaker asked Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was replying to a question, to take his seat as nothing could be heard amid the din and adjourned the proceedings till noon.

DMK sources have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys a good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is embroiled in two major allegations — the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order Karunanidhi has remained soft on him. (ANI)

Maoist blow up railway track in West Bengal

West Midnapore (West Bengal), Apr 27 (ANI): Suspected Maoists blew up a railway track near Midnapore town in West Bengal”s West Midnapore District on Tuesday, disrupting rail services in the region.

The incident took place on the second-day of the two-day shutdown call given by the rebels in the three states of West Bengal, Orissa and Jharkhand demanding release of six Maoists, who were arrested earlier.

Train services in the Kharagpur division have been affected by the incident.

Due to the impact of the blast, rail slippers were blown off and a huge crater was created below the tracks at Puturia between Midnapore and Bhadutala stations.

Railway officials, the bomb squad and security personnel have rushed to the spot and repair work of tracks has already begun.

A land mine was also found near the tracks.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had on April 23 said attacks on railway property have doubled during 2009.

Replying to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Banerjee informed that the railways has lost over Rs 500 crore due to disruptions by Maoists.

“Railways has become a target of Naxals,” Banerjee said.

“We have lost Rs 500 crore because of Naxal bandhs and obstructions,” she added.

Banerjee informed the House that the Naxals targeted railway property 58 times in 2009, while there were 30 incidents reported on attack on railway property by red rebels.

She said that 56 incidents were reported in 2007.

Banerjee said it was impossible to man every inch of the 65,000 kilometers rail route.

“Whatever we can do in our jurisdiction, we do,” she said.

“We appeal to all State Governments to take some precaution so that we can run trains,” Banerjee added.

In her reply, Banerjee emphasized that law and order was a state subject and railways could do very little with the limited Railway Protection Force.

Banerjee assured members that the Raiways would take steps to protect its security.

“Measures are taken for safety and security of trains like running of Rajdhani and other passenger trains,” she said.

“However, there is no decision regarding capping the speed of all the Rajdhani and other super-fast trains,” Banerjee added.

During the period of naxal attacks, bandhs and rail roko, running of trains are badly affected.

She said trains were attacked mostly in states of– Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and Chhattisgarh.

“There has been adverse impact on operations, freight loading and passenger traffic on a localised basis during bandh calls and other threats in vulnerable areas,” Banerjee said.

Railway Zones like– Dhanbad, Mughalsarai, Danapur of East Central Railway, Asansol, Malda of Eastern Railway, Ranchi, Adra, Chakradharpur and Kharagpur of South Eastern Railway, Waltair, Sambalpur of East Coast Railway and Guntakal, Secunderabad and Guntur of South Central Railway are mainly affected by the Maoists attack. Death toll rises to 36 in Kolkata”s Park Street fire

Kolkata, Mar 29 (ANI): The death toll from the fire that swept through the floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building in Park Street on March 23 has gone up to 36, following the recovery of one more body on Monday from the fifth floor of the building.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation official said: “We are working very carefully to remove the derbris, so a lot of time is being taken,” adding that nearly 75 percent of the work of removing the rubble is finished and the rest will be done tonight.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee had on March 28 said the Stephen Court fire has recorded the highest ever death toll in any fire incident in the metropolis even as search for the missing is still on.

“In my 14-year stint as minister, this is the worst fire tragedy,” he added as 34 deaths were reported on Sunday.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had on March 23 slammed the disaster management of the West Bengal Government for failing to control the fire and directed a railway emergency team from Sealdah to assist people trapped inside the building.

“I spoke to the Defence Ministry for sending the army. The ministry has issued instructions to send the army,” Banerjee told the media at the scene of fire on Tuesday, adding that the West Bengal Government should have sought the help of the army.

Banerjee said she did not want to make a political point, and had deliberately delayed her arrival at the site so that no one would accuse her of hampering rescue efforts.

“I was keeping an eye on matters and we waited for one-and-a half hours before coming here,” she said.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee had then blamed the excessive traffic for the delay in rescue efforts, adding that the death toll could rise. (ANI)

Death toll rises to 24 in Kolkata”s Park Street fire

Kolkata, Mar 24 (ANI): The death toll from the fire that swept through the three floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building on Park Street is now reported to be over 24, with several people still missing.

At least 20 people have been hospitalized and several others are reported to be in critical condition.

Over 17 burnt bodies have been recovered from the building.

“While six persons died either by jumping from the burning floors of the building, or sustaining burns during the day, 10 charred bodies were found late last night,” said fire brigade sources.

“It is not possible to say whether they were male or female. They were charred beyond recognition,” they added

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday slammed the disaster management of the West Bengal Government for failing to control the fire and directed a railway emergency team from Sealdah to assist people trapped inside the building.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Pratim Chatterjee blamed the excessive traffic for the delay in rescue efforts, adding that the death toll could rise.

There was utter confusion on Tuesday as an attempt was being carried out to find out in which floor of the building did the fire broke out with panic gripping those trapped inside. (ANI)

Railways ad places Delhi in Pakistan

Kolkata, Mar 20 (ANI):In yet another blunder by government departments, an advertisement issued by the Indian Railways has placed New Delhi in Pakistan and Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal.

The Easter Railway issued the advertisement to newspapers during a flag off ceremony of the “Maharaja”s Express.”

Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee was to flag off the Maharaja’a Express trail at Kolkata Station on Saturday.

A box inside the advertisement panel showed the train route from Kolkata to New Delhi via Gaya, Varanasi, Bandhabgarh, Khajuraho, Gwalior and Agra.

As the faded background of the outline of a small map of India showed Kolkata in the Bay of Bengal and Delhi in Pakistan.

Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Samir Goswami accepted the mistake and apologised for the same.

He also informed that the Easter Railways has suspended the advertising agency.

Meanwhile, the advertising agency claimed that the route alignment had been given for the benefit of passengers.

“The map and the alignment are an artist”s impression and not to scale. It is never our intention to create a controversy,” the advertising agency said.

In January, the Union Women and Child Welfare Ministry had issued an advertisement containing former Pakistan air force chief’s photograph. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee takes a dig at Left parties on Women Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Mar 10 (ANI): Union Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday charged the Left parties of taking undue credit for the successful passage of the Women Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

“Why is the Left parties taking undue credit for the bill,” said Banerjee.

“We boycotted the Bill because there was no floor coordination,” she added.

Mamata Banerjee, however, indicated that she was not totally against the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) with respect to the Bill.

“We are still backing the Bill. But minority problems must be addressed,” she claimed.

The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday boycotted the Rajya Sabha vote on the women”s bill, railing bitterly against the Congress but keeping its eyes firmly locked on Bengal politics.

Mamata Banerjee demanded sub-quotas for Muslim women candidates, seeking to consolidate her support among the community and trying to deny the CPM an opportunity to crow too much on the bill passed on Tuesday.

Her pitch for the sub-quota is also being seen as an answer to the ten percent job quota announced by the Left Front government in Bengal for disadvantaged backward-class Muslims.

The Trinamool parliamentary party has decided to meet on March 15 to chalk out its strategy for any vote on the bill in the Lok Sabha. A top party source said abstaining in the Lok Sabha was a “very real possibility”.

But even if it refrains from opposing the bill in the Lok Sabha, Trinamool is likely to use the discussion in the Lower House to articulate its demand for Muslim sub-quotas. (ANI)

Railways to probe scam during Lalu Prasad’s tenure

New Delhi, Sep 18 (ANI): Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee has said an external agency would probe allegations of graft during her predecessor’s tenure.

Lawmakers belonging to Bihar’s Janata Dal (United) had alleged that that during the tenure of former Railways Minister Lalu Prasad, people were asked to cede land to the railways in exchange for jobs and contracts in the organisation.

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) and the Railway Recruitment Committees (RRC) make recruitment to Indian Railways.

“RRB and the RRC is an organisation. They do it for this. So if severe complaints come against the RRB and RRC then it is the procedure of the department, they do it internally if internal matter is involved and if outsiders are involved then the procedure is to depute an outside agency,” Banerjee told reporters here on Thursday.

She said it would also review past land seizures, mostly from farmers. It needs land to proceed with a 5.8 billion dollars project to connect Indian regions and spur economic activity. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee lauds Rahul Gandhi’s train ride

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has lauded Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s train ride as part of his party’s austerity drive.

Mamata Banerjee, who inaugurated the newly spruced up terminal of New Delhi railway station in the capital along with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday, lauded the austerity act.

Gandhi travelled in an air-conditioned chair car of the Swarn Shatabdi Express on Tuesday, a day after his mother Sonia Gandhi travelled in an economy class flight from New Delhi to Mumbai.

Rahul travelled from New Delhi to Ludhiana to inaugurate a four-day camp of young Congressmen.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked the Congress leaders to observe austerity to cut down expenditure in the wake of draught declared in parts of the country.

Earlier, the Congress Party had decided that its ministers and lawmakers would also take a 20 per cent cut in salaries.

The Congress Party has also urged the government to keep prices of essential commodities in check with special emphasis on oil seeds and pulses. (ANI)
