50,000 American Muslims to attend prayer meeting on Washington Mall on Sep.25

Washington, Sep.13 (ANI): At least 50,000 American Muslims will participate in a national prayer gathering for September 25 in Washington, D.C.

According to a report filed by The Star-Ledger, the gathering is taking place in the city’s National Mall area and is being organised by representatives of a mosque in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The paper quoted Hassen Abdellah, president of the Dar-ul-Islam mosque and an event organizer, as saying: “Most of the time, when Muslims go to Washington, D.C., they go there to protest some type of event…This is not a protest. Never has the Islamic community prayed on Capitol Hill for the soul of America. We’re Americans. We need to change the face of Islam so people don’t feel every Muslim believes America is ‘the great Satan,’ because we love America.”

The Star-Ledger reports that “A permit from the Capitol Hill police, granted July 28, allows access to the area by the West Front of the Capitol building from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 25, but the main gathering will occur at 1 p.m., for the Friday prayer service.

Abdellah said he expects 50,000 people to attend, from mosques around the country, though non-Muslims are welcome, too.”

Abdellah stated the idea germinated after President Obama’s inaugural speech, and was reinforced by this summer’s Cairo address: “For the first time in my lifetime,”

Abdellah said, “I heard someone of his stature speaking about Islam and Muslims not in an adversarial sense, but in the sense of being welcome and acknowledging we are integral citizens in the society-that we’re gainfully employed, we’re educated.”(ANI)

Brit, Scot MPs to probe ex-PM Blair’s role in Lockerbie bomber’s release

London, Sep.6 (ANI): British and Scottish Members of Parliament are keen to know whether former Prime Minister Tony Blair played a role in a deal between Britain and Libya to secure the release of the Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset Ali al-Megrahi at a meeting in a London club in 2003, long before either the Scottish government or Gordon Brown was involved.

According to The Independent, questions are being raised in Parliament over the meeting that Blair orchestrated that brought Libya in from the cold.

MPs are set to demand the minutes of an extraordinary cloak-and-dagger summit in London between British, American and Libyan spies held three days before Blair announced that Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was surrendering his weapons of mass destruction programme.

At the time of the secret meeting in December 2003 at the private Travellers Club in Pall Mall, London – for decades the favourite haunt of spies – Libyan officials were pressing for negotiations on the status of Megrahi, who was nearly three years into his life sentence at a Scottish jail.

Whitehall sources said the issue of Megrahi’s imprisonment was raised as part of the discussions, although it is not clear whether Britain or America agreed to a specific deal over his imprisonment, or a more general indication that it would be reviewed.

MPs are to investigate what was promised by Britain at the talks on December 16, 2003 and the role that Blair played in the affair.

Until now, the controversy over Megrahi’s release last month has centred on discussions between Gordon Brown’s government and the Scottish executive and Libya since 2007, with Blair apparently not involved in any way.

It has also focused on claims that the deal was related to oil deals, with Jack Straw admitting yesterday that BP’s interests in Libya played a “big part”.

But authoritative sources said the seeds for Megrahi’s release were sown in 2003, when Libya made the historic agreement to end its status as a pariah, and that the focus on oil and trade was a “red herring”.

Last night, a spokesman for Blair could not be drawn on the December 2003 meeting. (ANI)

Obama, Biden waited in line to lunch on burgers

Arlington (Virginia), May 6 (ANI): US President Barack Obama and his deputy Joe Biden in order to show that they’re still in touch with the people waited in line for a big juicy burger.

They went in their motorcade across the Potomac River into Virginia, and pulled up outside 1713 Wilson Blvd. The popular joint in a plain Arlington strip mall has no sign, but neighbours know it houses Ray’s Hell Burger, and the eatery is famous for its premium aged 10-ounce hamburgers as for its bare-bones decor.

Obama purchased burgers not only for himself and Biden, but also for several members of the press pool that tailed him to lunch across the Potomac. Cheeseburgers at Ray’s retail at 7.95 dollars, and Obama deposited a five dollars bill in the tip jar.

With lunch in their hand, Obama and Biden sat atop stools, like most of the other customers.

A few of those customers remained in the small, burgers-only joint to savour the moment and finish their meal after Obama left.

“I had lunch with the president,” exclaimed Robert Gooch to nobody in particular.

Another customer proudly showed off the cell phone camera shot he took of the jacket-less Obama and Biden chowing down together.

Michael Landrum, the burger joint’s owner, was ecstatic after the visit, calling it “one of the greatest days of my life. I guess he was missing some good food from Chicago.”

Landrum went back behind the counter to keep pushing out burgers, but took the time to greet another storeowner in the small Rosslyn strip. (ANI)

Jason Statham found shooting sex scene in shopping mall ‘difficult’

New York, Apr 14 (ANI): Jason Statham is not averse to nudity in films, but he was quite uncomfortable when he had to shoot a sex scene in a packed shopping mall.

The hunky star had to shoot a raunchy scene in front of a large audience in a shopping mall for the film ‘Crank: High Voltage’.

“Trying to do an aggressive sex scene is quite difficult,” the New York Post quoted Statham as telling Ocean Drive.

He added: “Especially in a public place with a crowd of screaming extras with their little camera phones going click-click, talking pictures of your pasty white ass. I’ve had my fair share of bedroom antics in films, but they were a little more private.” (ANI)

Amy Adams used to make fake designer clothes!

London, April 12 (ANI): Actress Amy Adams has confessed that her financially strained upbringing often led her to make her own fake designer clothes at home.

The ‘Enchanted’ star revealed she had to rely on clearance sales to fill her wardrobe, and if she missed upon the chance, she could not afford the clothes.

But that did not stop the 34-year-old from being trendy since she started making twin apparel at home.

“We were defined by the clothes we bought at the mall,” the Daily Star quoted her as telling W magazine.

“If I didn’t get things on clearance, I wasn’t getting them. I would make fake Guess jeans by buying a cheaper brand with a triangle label and then cutting it off so you could still see the triangle outline.

“It’s so sad that I did that! But I really wanted to be one of those girls,” she added. (ANI)

Twins were to marry this year

NEW DELHI: “The Jain brothers always set examples for this colony. Even in their death, they have become our heroes by donating their eyes,” said
an emotional Naresh Kumar, RWA president of Laxmibai Enclave DDA flats and next-door neighbour of Luv and Manish Jain.

As the entire colony assembled outside the Jain residence on Saturday, Mahesh Jain, father of the twins, was trying to controls his tears outside the morgue at BJRM Hospital. “My sons always wanted to serve society. I respect their decision to donate their eyes,” he told Times City. The doctors first completed the donation process before conducting post-mortem as the operation has to be completed within a stipulated time.

“Luv and Manish were working at Goyal Sarees for the past five years. They had put in a lot of hard work and established a new shop at Ring Road Mall near Rohini. The shop was to be inaugurated on Saturday. My sons reached home around 2am on Saturday after making the final arrangements and were ready by 8.30am for the formal launch. It was all in vain,” said Mahesh.

The father said it was shocking to discover his sons lying lifeless on the road. “I got a call around 9.30am to reach BJRM Hospital. My youngest son, Ankit, rushed to me around the same time to tell me that there had been an accident in our neighbourhood. When I reached the spot, I found my sons lying on the ground. The policemen stood surrounding them but made no attempt to lift them…I will never forget this day,” said Jain, barely able to control his tears.

Family members said Luv was going to marry on June 26 in Haryana. “We were looking for a bride for Manish too. Since they were twins, we hoped to get both of them married in the same year,” said one of relatives.

Mahesh says he remembers the last conversation he had with Luv. “I insisted that I go and visit the new showroom, but he said that only a puja would take place on Saturday. Instead, he wanted us to visit the showroom on Sunday when everything would be functioning,” he said.

Nothing Nano about the buzz around it

POOJA KHANDELWAL (21) accompanied by her mother and two siblings went to Infinity Mall in Andheri to buy clothes and cosmetics on Thursday. They ended up shopping for a car.

The Khandelwals belonged to the throng of visitors gathered at the Westside store to get a look and feel of the world’s first Rs 1-lakh car – the Nano. The car, which is on display at the store till April 25, attracted onlookers and prospective buyers who examined it in detail, from its rear engine to its horn.

A store official, who did not wish to be named, said that the walk-in customers had doubled from the previous day. He estimated 75 booking forms were sold in the first four hours that the car was showcased.

A gaggle of college students took turns to sit inside the car. Brijal Gaglani (19) was impressed by the Nano’s legroom but lamented the lack of an ashtray.

Business executive Abhishek Anand (27) had no complaints. “It is small, beautiful and spacious,” he said.

Anand, who left work mid-way to see the Nano, immediately bought the Rs 300 registration form. “I’ve finally found a small car where my 5 ft 11 inch frame can fit without brushing against the roof,” he said.

“I am very eager to buy the Nano.” An official explaining the car’s features to customers said many senior citizens had expressed a keen desire to buy the Nano.

As if on cue, an elderly gentleman asked him about the security features of the car while a grandmother enquired about the available colours.Captain D.N. Banerjee and Captain Kondal, colleagues in the merchant navy, who rushed from their office to buy the booking forms, couldn’t stop raving about the Nano.

The Nano will be Kondal’s third car, and he wants to buy it for his wife. “It’s not cramped and the visibility is superb.

It’s perfect for city roads,” he said. “Hats off to Ratan Tata,” said Banerjee who plans to gift the Nano to his daughter.

The Khandelwals, who liked the slick and roomy interiors of the car, also bought their registration form. “We are a tall family of five and we all fit perfectly in the Nano.

But the car is only for the girls of the family,” Pooja said with a smile.

Michelle Obama’s month long itinerary revealed

Washington, Mar.29 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama has spent the past month travelling to North Carolina to rally military families, standing next to Hillary Clinton to encourage women to get politically active, showing up at a home-building site on the National Mall, visiting a District of Columbia school to talk up good grades and shovelling dirt for a “kitchen garden” at the White House.

In between, the Council of Fashion Designers of America announced that it would honour her with a special tribute for her contribution to the fashion industry, reports Politico.

Obama, it seems, has become the spokeswoman for all sorts of issues and topics – from fitness, parenting, the environment and women’s rights, to redefining images of black women in American culture and promoting self-esteem for young girls.

Yet in the midst of all those themes, it isn’t yet clear whether her self-described core messages – about military families, volunteerism, and helping working women balance work and family life – are truly breaking through.

Some wonder if she’s spreading herself too thin to emerge in the public mind as a leading voice on those topics.

Aides say she’s flattered and still surprised by the intense interest in her – and sees it as a way to advance part of her unofficial agenda.

So rather than worry about diluting her message, they believe she is building a powerful public platform to make her voice heard.

“I think it’s fragmented. She stands for so many things right now, she’s doing so many things. She’s in the kitchen at the White House, she’s building houses, she’s digging in the garden. It’s all very nice, but I thought to myself, ‘Why is she planting herbs?’” said Mindy Sabella, director of marketing at Siegel+Gale, which specializes in strategic branding.

Obama’s early moves have shown the topics where her interests run the deepest.

Early polling has shown that most prefer that Michelle Obama take on education, work-life family balance, or health care.

But she clearly is breaking through and connecting on some level – polls show her favorability ratings in the mid-60s. (ANI)

Queen Mother’s bronze statue unveiled in London

London, February 25 (ANI): A bronze statue in honour of the Queen Mother was unveiled by her daughter Queen Elizabeth in central London.

The statue was made to stand in front of the Queen Mother’s husband King George VI as a centre-piece of a 2 million pound monument on The Mall.

The event saw the gathering of senior members of the Royal Family including Prince William, Prince Harry, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

The 9ft 6inch artwork was sculpted by Philip Jackson, who said he wanted to create the much-loved and inspiring royal’s sense of fun.

“The Queen Mother’s influence was felt for almost an entire century and she was well loved by a large part of the population,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

“I wanted to give her animation because she was a very animated person – when you met her she was the life and soul of the party.

“The wind is catching her robes, to give her a slight sense of movement, and she has the slightest vestiges of a smile,” he added.

Prince Charles also paid a touching tribute to his “darling grandmother”, saying: “At long last my grandparents are reunited in this joint symbol, which in particular reminds us of all they stood for and meant to so many during the darkest days this country has ever faced.”
