A woman on Monday crossed over to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) from a border village along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
Noorjahan, 32, married to Abdul Majeed of Gotaraya village crossed over from Kerni forward belt along the LoC early today, they said.
Police have registered a case in this regard and investigation has begun.
Kerni village is divided into two parts, one part on either side of the LoC, they said.
Karachi, May 8 (ANI): Despite the Pakistan government giving several assurances to protect minorities, several marginalized sections of society, especially the Hindus, continue to bear the brunt of the government’s apathy in the country.
The fact is evident as in spite of assuring action against the murderers of prominent Hindu leader Sudhamchand Chawla, the Sindh government has failed to take any action against incumbent Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani even after eight years of Chawla’s death.
Chawla, the president of the Hindu Panchait, was killed in January 2002 in Jacobabad, where influential feudal lords such as the Jakhrani tribe led by Jakhrani and the Soomro tribe led by former Senate chairman Muhammadmian Soomro were struggling for political control at that time.
A first information report (FIR) was filed against against Ejaz Jakhrani and his relatives Mumtaz Jakhrani and Majeed Jakhrani.
The police also named Jakhrani’s father, Mir Ahmed Khan alias Babul Khan Jakhrani, in the FIR for forcing the culprits to kill Chawla, The Daily Times reports.
However, due their political influence there has been little action against those named in the FIR.
A couple of years back, the then district police officer of Jacobabad Munir Ahmed Khuhro had written a letter to the Sindh inspector general asking for permission to arrest Jakhrani, but his mail went unanswered.
When asked about the latest development in the case, Jacobabad City Police Station Station House Officer (SHO) Sikandar Soomro confirmed that FIR was lodged against Jakhrani and others, but also revealed that the names were withdrawn later.
“Later the names were withdrawn from the FIR and I don’t know how it happened, as it was done before I joined this police station. The case is now against unidentified persons and has an A-class status, which means it was suspended temporarily and can be reopened at any time,” Soomro said. (ANI)
Islamabad, Mar. 8 (ANI): Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has decided to scrutinize the financial assets of Pakistani cricketers in the wake of match fixing allegation.
“We are very much concerned over the continuous criticism from different circles over match fixing and have directed PML (N) legislator Saud Majeed, chairman sub-committee, to probe into these allegations. The sub-committee will also scrutinize the financial strength of the players besides verifying their tax returns,” The Dawn NA committee chief Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, as saying
However, PCB chief Ijaz Butt informed the NA committee that the players who were involved in match-fixing were not from the current squad.
“The match fixing allegations are totally baseless and the current tour of the squad to Australia was not tainted by match fixing at all,” Butt said.
He claimed that that former cricketers Saleem Malik and Ataur Rehman were in fact responsible for match fixing.
The NA committee also gave a deadline of March 11 to the Punjab government for bring responsible police officers to book who displayed slackness during their duty on March 3, 2009 when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by terrorists in Lahore. (ANI)
Srinagar, Sep 16 (ANI): The regional passport authorities of Jammu and Kashmir have denied passport to a Kashmiri youth, sighting the reason of his father’s involvement with militants in the valley.
A Nineteen-year -old youth, Basharat Bashir, was all set to fly to Spain for the soccer training, but the news of denial of passport has crushed his dreams.
“They were (passport authorities) only telling me that your case has not been recommended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and FRO from police. I know they have denied me to give the passport because my father was a militant,” said Ahmad.
Bashir was among the 11 players selected by International Sports Academy Trust (ISAT) for training in Spain, but was dropped at the last moment because of non availablitiy of passport.
When contacted, the passport office authorities refused to talk about it.
Former Indian football captain Abdul Majeed Kakroo said it was injustice to Bashir and demanded the intervention of state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the matter.
“His father was into wrong things but now he has improved. Now, why should his son suffer for that? Why should he be denied the passport, and hurdles put in his way? On behalf of all the football players I would request the chief minister to help him,” Kakroo said.
Bashir also said that he was a year-and-a-half old when his father was arrested and was later released.

Islamabad, Aug.26 (ANI): With the ten-point charter of demands forwarded by the Jammu Kashmir Muslim League being accepted by the Pakistan held Kashmir government, Prime Minister Sardar Yaqoob Khan seems to have avoided a further fall out in the ruling coalition, but temporarily.
The two main allies of the held Kashmir government, the Muslim Conference (MC) forward bloc led by Sardar Farooq Haider and People’s Muslim League led by former prime minister Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry had threatened to walk out of the alliance over the appointment of senior PPP leader Chaudhry Mohammad Yasin as adviser on local government.
Both the parties were of the view that a non-elected person should not be appointed as an adviser with the status of a minister having executive powers, The Dawn reports.
According to sources some federal ministers were trying to build a new alliance in the region under which the PPP’s held Kashmir chief Chaudhry Majeed was tipped to be appointed as new Prime Minister throwing out Yaqoob.
Sources said that a close-door meeting was held at the residence of Barrister Sultan Mehmood in Islamabad in which it was Chaudhry Yasin would remain adviser on local government but without any executive authority.
It was also decided that Sardar Naeem Khan, an MLA and brother of senior MC leader Sardar Sikendar Hayat Khan would be given cabinet berth as Minister for Rural Development.
Prime Minister Yaqoob Khan has also assured the displeased allies that he would not accept federal government’s interference beyond rules laid down under the Interim Constitution of 1974. (ANI)
Rawalpindi, Aug. 15 (ANI): A domestic flight in Pakistan was diverted back to Islamabad after a female singer on board started shouting to get her purse back, which she believed had been forgotten at the departure lounge.
Shabnam Majeed, who was flying back to Lahore in the PIA flight PK-653 after performing at the Independence Day celebration at the Presidency overnight, started shouting mid-flight and forced the pilot to divert back the flight to Islamabad, The Dawn reports.
She claimed that the purse contained 18,000 rupees in cash, credit card and gold ornaments.
However, the singer failed to recover her bag at the departure lounge of Benazir Bhutto International Airport, and lodged a complaint with the PIA authorities.
This incident caused a considerable delay of the flight and inconvenience to all the passengers. (ANI)
Anantnag, Apr 30 (ANI): Defying the boycott call by the separatist faction of Hurriyat led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, residents came out in large numbers to cast their votes in Kashmir on Thursday.
While Srinagar wore a deserted look, in Anantnag residents thronged the polling booths from early morning to cast their votes with hopes of electing a government that would deliver on its promises.
“We want to elect a candidate who will help us and work for the upliftment and development of our region,” said Umer Majeed, one of the early voters.
The separatists have called for a 50-hour shutdown in the valley, against the polls.
This is not the first time the separatists have given a call for poll boycott in Kashmir.
The separatists had to suffer a major setback after residents defied the boycott call given by the Hurriyat during the State Assembly polls held in November 2008 and came out in large numbers to cast their votes.
A prominent Kashmiri separatist leader Sajjad Lone, who had given a call for poll boycott during the state elections, has decided to contest during these general elections and raise the voices of Kashmiris in the Parliament.
Besides the Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are also contesting in the elections. (ANI)
Jammu, Mar 9 (ANI): Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants have been killed in an encounter with security forces in Gool area of Ramban district in Jammu and Kashmir today.
On a tip off, the Rashtriya Rifle troops and the police had jointly launched an operation in Patas area of the district.
One of the slain militants has been identified as Abdul Majeed, who was active in militancy since 2007. The identity of another militant was being ascertained.
One snipper rifle, one 303 rifle and some ammunition have been recovered from them. (ANI)
