Let’s write the sequel to Battleship based on some crap I found on my kitchen table

A few years back, moviegoers had a big belly laugh when they heard that a movie studio was immolating $200 million on an alien invasion flick based on the 1967 board game Battleship. “Haw haw!” we innocently guffawed. “Obligatory bon mot about red a

nd white pegs! You sunk my battleship! Insert mock glee about cultural fatuousness and strip-mined childhood memories here!”

Well, now the joke’s on us. Prior to opening in North America, Battleship has made ducats a-go-go worldwide because — as Michael Bay’s robots-in-disguise trilogy taught us — we as a species are genetically predisposed toward ogling chunks of computer-generated alloy making noises similar to Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music. (It’s the siren song of SKRONK-SKRONK-PHWEESH.)

Battleship’s newfound loot guarantees that some Snidely Whiplash lookalike in Hollywood is itching to fast-track a sequel. But what will Battleship 2 look like? Given that A.) nobody on the planet asked for a Battleship movie; and B.) Paramount Pictures is using the last uncurled finger on its magic monkey’s paw to make Transformers 4 for 2014, it is my sincere belief that Battleship 2 will have nothing to do with battleships.

Let’s discuss the plot of director Peter Berg’s Battleship (trailer here) for a moment. There’s a yawning narrative gulf between Battleship the board game and Battleship the movie. Nothing about the former suggests the latter, save for the shared loose theme of naval combat (and some peg-shaped alien missiles).

As I noted back in 2010, board game movies must plot that which is essentially plotless. Using the Milton-Bradley source material alone, Battleship’s screenwriters at best could’ve penned a period war movie with the maritime historical credibility of Baywatch Nights.

The scriptwriters also could’ve cobbled together decades worth of Battleship commercial ephemera. For example, we could’ve learned how quickly that wife divorced her husband (in the above 1968 box art) and what grandpa had for breakfast (in the TV spot at left). The film would be not unlike that GEICO caveman sitcom or an opera starring Domino’s Pizza Noid or a sonnet about the Michelin Man.

Battleship isn’t exactly novel for being a movie based on a tabletop game (see: 1985′s Clue and 2000′s Dungeons and Dragons). No, Battleship is kind of exemplary for possessing source material that in no way necessitates what happens onscreen. The bare minimum the filmmakers needed were battleships, and the noun “battleship” alone does not have a plot (non-etymologically speaking).

No, the movie Battleship relies on the audience’s collective memory of playing a game of Battleship, most likely during elementary school recess, when the only two non-picked-over options are Battleship and half a deck of urine-stained Uno cards.

And like a male anglerfish fusing to the much larger female anglerfish’s body and becoming a living testicle, this meager nostalgia has affixed itself to the present, populist, SKRONK-SKRONK-PHWEESH edifice of the Transformers movies. If Battleship came out in the 1980s, it might have a theme song by Menudo. That’s what happened to Rubik’s Cube, after all.

Think of Battleship as a tiny human pilot inside a 50-foot-tall Michael Bay golem made of box office receipts. You could switch out that pilot and nobody would notice, but people are reassured if they know who that pilot is.

Similarly, you could toss any number of communal experiences in the framework of Battleship (the movie) and come out with a narrative that’s 99% similar. I’m guessing the only reason Battleship (the game) was selected as blockbuster bait was to sell the inevitable Battleship Monopoly. (“Liam Neeson’s Flinty Gaze” = Marvin Gardens?)

With this mind, it’s abundantly clear Battleship 2 has zip need for the game Battleship. In fact, I’ve discovered an assortment of common objects on my kitchen table that will fuel the next three sequels. Mustache-twirling studio executives, please email me my requisite 46% of the domestic gross or risk legal action. Thank you.

Battleship 2: Plastic Hanger

Everybody uses coat hangers. But what if aliens didn’t use coat hangers? What if aliens had grenades that looked like coat hangers? And these grenades exploded? This could be a potent Invasion of the Bodysnatchers-meets-S.W.A.T.-style hybrid.

Full size
Battleship 2: Val-Pak

Everybody receives junk mail. What if aliens could infiltrate by shapeshifting into junk mail? And this junk mail exploded? TWIST: The aliens are also copies of PARADE magazine. Marilyn vos Savant is an alien. Howard Huge is her trusted lieutenant. DOUBLE TWIST: I accidentally threw away my PARADE magazine yesterday.

Battleship 2: Pieces of Wax From A Yankee Candle

Everybody has seen random pieces of wax. What if these random pieces of wax were a code? A code from another planet? A code to make an explosive? From a planet that once exploded? And what if this planet smelled like Baltic Pine? Guest-starring Foxy Brown.

Whitman far ahead in GOP race for Calif. governor

SAN FRANCISCO, June 4 (Reuters) – Former eBay Inc Chief Executive Meg Whitman holds a two-to-one lead among voters over California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner in their race for the Republican nomination for governor, according a Field Poll report released on Friday.

Poizner, a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur, since March has nearly halved billionaire front-runner Whitman’s lead in their race for the party’s nomination but he faces a seemingly insurmountable gap as California’s June 8 primary election nears, said Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo.

“The odds are clearly in Whitman’s favor,” DiCamillo said. “There is not a lot there to move it over into Poizner’s column.”

San Francisco-based Field Poll’s final pre-election survey on the race found Whitman leading Poizner by a 51 percent to 25 percent margin among likely Republican primary voters, with another 6 percent preferring other candidates and 18 percent undecided.

Worse for Poizner is that the Field Poll found Whitman strongly favored across the Republican spectrum, including its conservative core.

She leads Poizner among voters identifying themselves as strongly conservative by 52 percent to his 26 percent and enjoys a big lead with Republicans identifying with the populist Tea Party movement.

“Among this segment of voters Whitman holds a thirty-point lead, only marginally greater than the twenty-three point lead she holds among those who do not identify a lot with the Tea Party,” the Field Poll report said.

Republicans likely to vote early by mail and those who will vote in precincts also overwhelmingly back Whitman. “It doesn’t seem to matter what cut of Republican voter we get, it still seems to favor Whitman,” DiCamillo said.

WILL AND WALLET TO WIN

Whitman appears to have impressed Republicans with a “will to win” and deep pockets for funding a general election campaign after spending more than $70 million of her own money in her primary effort, DiCamillo said.

He noted Republicans see Whitman as a stronger candidate than Poizner — by 61 percent to 21 percent — in a match-up against Democrat Jerry Brown, California’s current attorney general and a former governor who has his party’s nomination for governor sewn up.

Whitman and Poizner combined have spent more than $110 million — a record amount in primary election in California — to win the Republican nomination to succeed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, also a Republican, and are inn the home-stretch of their battle blanketing the state with negative advertising.

Poizner charges Whitman with being soft on illegal immigration, an issue that spilled into California from neighboring Arizona where officials recently approved a controversial law cracking down on undocumented migrants. Whitman ads charge Poizner is contrary to his claims a liberal on taxes and spending.

Analysts expect California’s next governor to take office as the most populous U.S. state struggles to emerge from a harsh economic slump caused by the mortgage crisis, housing’s implosion and the widespread loss of household wealth and jobs as financial markets tumbled — and to contend with one of the nation’s most partisan state legislatures.

At 12.6 percent, California’s unemployment rate is one of the worst in the nation and has helped open a $19.1 billion shortfall in the state budget.

Schwarzenegger, in his final term, and the Democrat-led legislature are sharply at odds over how to balance the state’s books. He wants deep spending cuts and no tax increases. Democrats are calling for delaying corporate tax breaks, a tax on oil production and borrowing from state funds. Republican lawmakers whose votes are needed for a budget have ruled out tax increases.

The Field Poll findings are based on a survey from May 27 through June 2 of 511 likely voters in California’s Republican primary election. The survey’s maximum sampling error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.

Asian Tigers threaten to kill ‘Osama’ if action taken against Hamid Mir

Lahore, May 21 (ANI): The Asian Tigers have threatened to kill the son of former Inter-Services Intelligence officer Khalid Khawaja if any action is taken against Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir.

Osama Khalid claimed that the Asian Tigers have indirectly threatened to do the same to him as they did to his father, a private TV channel reported on Thursday.

A foreign reporter contacted Osama who informed him that he had received a mail from the terrorist group, in which they were threatening Osama with a similar fate to that of his father if any action was taken against the talk show host.

Osama said that he has “firm belief” that talk show host Hamid Mir and Osman Punjabi, a militant associated with the Taliban, were the real murderers of his father, the Daily Times reports.

He said he would present all the records of the telephonic conversations that he had held with Osman Punjabi before the court, as he has enough (telephonic) records to support his case, adding that he believed he would get justice from the judiciary regarding the murder of his father.

A little-known Asian Tigers militant group murdered former ISI officer Khalid Khawaja on April 23.

Osama said he had already confirmed that the unidentified militant in the audiotape talking to Hamid Mir was Osman Punjabi, who used his alias Muhammad Omar while talking to various people.

Osama said that he would register a case after collecting further evidences in the murder of his father, adding that he would prove before the court that the audiotape was accurate.

Besides the holding of a judicial inquiry, he also appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of the matter. (ANI)

TTP warns Balochistan schools against allowing students to wear ‘western’ clothes

Quetta, May 15 (ANI): The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has threatened several schools, including two girls’ school in Quetta of ‘severe consequences’ if they do not pursue its guidelines regarding the dress code.

A number of schools in the provincial capital and Mastung region have received threatening letters warning them against allowing students to wear ‘western’ clothes, and asked them to observe the ‘purdah’ system strictly.

Following the terror warning some of the schools have closed down fearing an attack from the TTP, The Dawn reports.

The threat letter also warned about the presence of ‘informants among the students and staff members.’

The threatening mail has resulted in a wave of panic sweeping among students and school administration across the province. (ANI)

Indian-born Canadian Liberal MP says six months jail for LTTE fundraiser too lax

Vancouver (Canada), May 15 (ANI): Indian-born Canadian Liberal MP Ujjal Dosanjh has criticized the country’s judicial system for failing to send a strong message of deterrence to fundraisers for terrorist groups when it sentenced an Ontario man to only six months in jail for raising funds for the Tamil Tigers.

Dosanjh was reacting to a verdict delivered by Mr. Justice Robert Powers, of the British Columbia Supreme Court, on Prapaharan Thambithurai, 46, sending him to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty this week to fundraising for a banned terrorist group.

The law provides for a maximum sentence of 10 years and does not include a minimum sentence.

“Because this was the first case, because it was about terrorism, because it is so scary. . . I think the sentence could have been tougher,” the Globae and Mail quoted Dosanjh, as saying.

“The court case shows that Canada is serious in stamping out terrorism. But I think we need to do more,” he added.

Dosanjh has been threatened and beaten after speaking out against terrorism.

Security and intelligence expert Wesley Wark said Friday’s sentence was obviously very light and weak.

“It does not do much in terms of sending a message to Canadian society about the seriousness of the crime,” he said. “I don’t think in anybody’s eyes it could be regarded as a stiff sentence or a sentence that is likely to deter.”

Federal prosecutor Martha Devlin described Thambithurai as a low-level street canvasser, and had recommended a two-year sentence.

His lawyer, Richard Peck, proposed a three-year suspended sentence.

Both sides now have 30 days to decide whether to appeal the sentence. (ANI)

The postman who stole 76,000 letters

London, May 13 (IANS) A British postman, who stashed away 76,000 letters and parcels in his home, had to leave his flat as there was no space to live in it.

Paul Noga, 38, nicked 76,000 letters, bank statements, birthday presents and parcels over a two-year period.

Stunned police officials found mail covering every surface of the flat when they raided his home, The Sun reported.

Noga torched up to 1,000 stolen packages and damaging hundreds more.

‘The mail was just lying around in the flat. It got to such an extent he had to move to his mother’s flat, where he now lives,’ Noga’s lawyer Shaun Routledge told Newcastle Crown Court.

Routledge sought a psychiatric report on the postman.

Malaysian lorry driver claims masseuse “nearly molested” him

Kuala Lumpur, May 11 (ANI): A Malaysian lorry driver has laid claim that he was “nearly molested” by a masseuse in Bedong, Kedah.

According to the Harian Metro, the man, who is in his 40s and known as Mail, said his friend had introduced him to the services of the single mother who conducted her business from home.

He revealed that the woman, who is in her 50s, would conduct her massages in a room while her children were in the living room.

“I was told to come for massages three days in a row with each session costing RM30,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

He suspected something was amiss when on the second day the woman started massaging his private parts.

“She suddenly lifted my sarong and climbed on top of me. What is more shocking is that she wasn’t wearing any underwear,” he revealed.

Shocked by the woman’s actions Mail immediately shoved her away, causing her to fall. He put on his clothes and ran out of the house.

“I am angry at the woman’s action as she had tried to take advantage of her customers. She should have just provided massage services, not sex,” he said.

Mail did not return for his third day appointment.

“A friend told me that the woman only gave massages to men and she had been doing this for years. She is also reputedly very popular with men,” he added. (ANI)

Pak authorities yet to make arrests in murdered Hindu leader’s case eight years on

Karachi, May 8 (ANI): Despite the Pakistan government giving several assurances to protect minorities, several marginalized sections of society, especially the Hindus, continue to bear the brunt of the government’s apathy in the country.

The fact is evident as in spite of assuring action against the murderers of prominent Hindu leader Sudhamchand Chawla, the Sindh government has failed to take any action against incumbent Sports Minister Ejaz Jakhrani even after eight years of Chawla’s death.

Chawla, the president of the Hindu Panchait, was killed in January 2002 in Jacobabad, where influential feudal lords such as the Jakhrani tribe led by Jakhrani and the Soomro tribe led by former Senate chairman Muhammadmian Soomro were struggling for political control at that time.

A first information report (FIR) was filed against against Ejaz Jakhrani and his relatives Mumtaz Jakhrani and Majeed Jakhrani.

The police also named Jakhrani’s father, Mir Ahmed Khan alias Babul Khan Jakhrani, in the FIR for forcing the culprits to kill Chawla, The Daily Times reports.

However, due their political influence there has been little action against those named in the FIR.

A couple of years back, the then district police officer of Jacobabad Munir Ahmed Khuhro had written a letter to the Sindh inspector general asking for permission to arrest Jakhrani, but his mail went unanswered.

When asked about the latest development in the case, Jacobabad City Police Station Station House Officer (SHO) Sikandar Soomro confirmed that FIR was lodged against Jakhrani and others, but also revealed that the names were withdrawn later.

“Later the names were withdrawn from the FIR and I don’t know how it happened, as it was done before I joined this police station. The case is now against unidentified persons and has an A-class status, which means it was suspended temporarily and can be reopened at any time,” Soomro said. (ANI)

MP admits falsifying pay forms

New South Wales Labor MP Karyn Paluzzano has admitted to falsely signing employee pay forms at a corruption hearing in Sydney.

Ms Paluzzano has been on the stand on day three of the Independent Commission Against Corruption’s (ICAC) inquiry.

The inquiry has heard she was involved in defrauding Parliament through falsifying staff pay forms and rorting a mail-out allowance.

She was asked during the hearing whether she signed false or misleading employee pay forms.

She replied: “That’s correct.”

Ms Paluzzano yesterday resigned as a parliamentary secretary after admitting there were irregularities in her electorate office.

Earlier today former staff member Tim Horan produced mobile phone records to show he was in Penrith on a day when he was paid to be at State Parliament.

Mr Horan also told the hearing that Ms Paluzzano sent a non-approved letter to constituents complaining about a proposed retirement village at Kingswood which she feared would adversely affect her nearby home.

Mr Horan says she did this by sending a letter about a 2009 Australia Day event to Parliament for approval and when it was given the letter involving the development was also put in the envelopes.

He says both he and Ms Paluzzano knew it was wrong.

Yesterday another former staff member, Jennifer Launt, admitted falsely filling out pay forms.

Ms Launt told the hearing she knew she was doing the wrong thing when she signed the forms, but she did not speak up because she felt intimidated by Ms Paluzzano.

Earlier the Opposition’s Chris Hartcher said it was not enough that Ms Paluzzano had resigned from her parliamentary role.

He said Premier Kristina Keneally needed to take further action.

“The Premier should show decisive leadership and now remove Karyn Paluzzano from the Labor Party,” he said.

The ALP’s general secretary, Sam Dastyari, says he will not speculate on Ms Paluzzano’s party membership status, saying he is awaiting ICAC’s findings.

Ms Paluzzano returns to the witness box on Thursday.

Labor MP rorted mail allowance, inquiry told

A corruption inquiry has been told the New South Wales Labor MP Karyn Paluzzano rorted an allowance by including a non-approved letter in mailouts to her constituents.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) hearing into the member for Penrith’s conduct has heard evidence from former staffer Tim Horan.

He has told the hearing that Ms Paluzzano sent a non-approved letter to constituents complaining about a proposed retirement village at Kingswood – which she feared would adversely affect her nearby home.

Mr Horan says she did this by sending a letter about a 2009 Australia Day event to parliament for approval and when it was given the letter involving the development was also put in the envelopes.

He says both he and Ms Paluzzano knew it was wrong.

The inquiry has also heard further evidence about how employee pay forms were falsified.

Mr Horan’s mobile phone bill has been tendered to the inquiry.

It shows he was making calls from Penrith on a day he was paid for being at State Parliament.

Ms Paluzzano is at the hearing today but she has not yet taken the stand.

She resigned as a Parliamentary Secretary yesterday after admitting to irregularities.

Aniston ups fitness regime to look good beside swimsuit model in new film

Melbourne, May 03 (ANI): Former ‘Friends’ star Jennifer Aniston, who is admired by many women for her fit body and stunning looks, is apparently not happy with her figure.

Aniston has called her personal trainer Mandy Ingber so that she looks perfect beside swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker in her latest film ‘Just Go With It’, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Aniston has asked Mandy, to fly to Hawaii, where the film that also stars Adam Sandler, is being shot.

“Jen has been getting really wound up with the wardrobe department because her costumes are so skimpy and she”s worried about working with a younger model with a hot body,” a source told The Mail.

“She has upped her fitness regime and has had her gym equipment sent to her villa,” she added. (ANI)

For couples, ”perfect moment” of the day will be at 8:44pm

London, May 3 (ANI): For worked up couples, the “perfect moment” when they can finally sit down and relax at the end of the day comes at precisely 8.44pm, research has found.

The study of 3,000 people found the average couple settles down together at 8.05pm – but it takes a further 39 minutes to unwind and forget about the stresses and strains of the working day.

The pressures of long working hours and domestic tasks also mean married couples are spending less than 75 minutes of quality time together, according to the study.

Psychologists and counsellors have said that the gruelling work and domestic schedules of modern life are fuelling high divorce rates.

Professor Cary Cooper, organisational psychology and health expert at Lancaster University Management School, said the findings are not surprising.

“This is normal, I mean it”s abnormal, but normal in the our society, which has the longest working hours in Europe,” the Scotsman quoted Cooper as saying.

“The impact of this on quality of life is poor. When do you fit in personal, disposable time to focus on your relationship?

“The result is that couples are engaging in tactical talk – such as who will pick up the kids or who will have the car – and not emotional talk. This leads to separations, break-ups and divorce,” he added.

The study also shows that there are distinct differences between the ways men and women wind down after work.

Six in ten women will prepare the evening meal, compared to just a third of men – and four in ten women then do the dishes or put the washing on.

Women also take more responsibility for house administration – such as arranging school dinner money, filling out forms and checking mail.

Men are more likely to help the children with homework – 17 per cent of fathers compared to 13 per cent of mothers – because women are busy with the housework.

Seven in ten women do more around the house than men, and 66 per cent of men admit they might relax earlier than their partner.

Veronica Hansmann, a counsellor and psychotherapist based in Dunblane, said working long hours and an unfair division of household chores can create tensions in relationships.

“It depends on the couple. In many cases household chores are evenly distributed between couples. What”s more important is communicating,” she said.

“It can depend on how you talk about the practical things. It”s not always about what you talk about but how – if you really communicate with each other or if you talk like robots,” she added.

Hansmann said she advises couples to spend at least one night a week doing something together. (ANI)

Now, painless vaccines!

it surely was too much pain, for a lot of good. Now, the trade-off is unlikely to stay current.

In what would make childhood immunisation easier and pain-free, scientists have developed a patch — the size of a postage stamp — which they claim could be used to deliver cheap, needle-free vaccines.

A new study, led by the University of Queensland, has found that a vaccine delivered by ‘Nanopatch’ induces a similarly protective immune response as a vaccine delivered by needle and syringe, but uses 100 times less vaccine.

According to the scientists, the patch could be used in developing countries where clean needles and refrigeration are scarce.

“The Nanopatch targeted specific antigen presenting cells found in a narrow layer just beneath the skin surface and as a result we used less than one hundredth of dose used by a needle while stimulating a comparable immune response.

“Our result is ten times better than the best results achieved by other delivery methods and does not require the use of other immune stimulants, called adjuvants, or multiple vaccinations.

“Because the Nanopatch requires neither a trained practitioner to administer it nor refrigeration, it has enormous potential cheaply deliver vaccines in developing nations,” lead scientist Professor Mark Kendall said.

According to the scientists, the Nanopatch comprises of several thousands of densely packed projections invisible to the human eye. The influenza vaccine was dry coated onto the projections and applied to skin of mice for two minutes.

“By using far less vaccine we believe that the Nanopatch will enable the vaccination of many more people.

When compared to a needle and syringe a Nanopatch is cheap to produce and it is easy to imagine a situation in which a government might provide vaccinations for a pandemic such as swine flu to be collected from a chemist or sent in the mail.

“This is an exciting discovery and our next step s to prove the effectiveness of Nanopatches in human clinical rials,” Professor Kendall said.

Sherry flags probe into Tax Office bungle

Assistant Treasurer Nick Sherry has confirmed the Inspector-General of Taxation will investigate the Australian Tax Office (ATO) computer problems that have led to the bungling of thousands of tax returns.

Senator Sherry on Friday said there was a backlog of about 210,000 returns which have built up since late January.

Melbourne software development company boss Evan Jones is just one of thousands of Australians desperately waiting for a tax refund cheque.

He told Fairfax radio on Friday that his company has been owed just over $150,000 since January.

“We’ve laid off all of the staff, we’ve ceased all of development. Our phones have been cut off, faxes cut off,” he said.

Mr Jones says calls to the Tax Office have only brought frustration.

“They say the cheque is in the mail; the cheque is at the printers; we don’t know; if you haven’t heard by Monday give us a call.

“And my personal favourite was when I called them back to say we’ve had to lay off all of our staff, they said ‘were they valuable staff?’.”

Senator Sherry told Fairfax radio the backlog of returns has built up since late January when the ATO switched to its new computer system.

He says he asked the Inspector-General of Taxation to investigate on Friday morning.

“[To investigate] the implementation of the IT change and its impacts and I would expect the Inspector-General of Taxation to deal with issues of compensation,” he said.

“Obviously I can’t pre-empt the Inspector-General’s findings, however [the] cost of this IT upgrade – and this IT upgrade has been occurring for the last five or six years – was approximately $800 million.”

Senator Sherry says the ATO has told him it will process the backlog by the end of April and he says he has been assured that refund cheques will be attached, unlike thousands of recent returns.

“There is about 140,000 that did not contain cheques or refund statements that have been sent out and, again, the ATO informed me last night that that will be cleared by the end of next week.

“The ATO have employed hundreds of additional staff in order to clear the backlogs.”

Terms of reference

Senator Sherry’s office told PM that the terms of reference for the Inspector-General’s inquiry are being finalised.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon wants to see if they go far enough.

“It could well be that if the terms of reference aren’t comprehensive enough, the Senate, when it sits in a few weeks’ time, can pass a resolution requesting broader terms of reference,” he said.

“We need to find out whether this is an IT problem, whether the party that has been given the job of doing this – it’s been outsourced to an external party – whether they’ve fulfilled their contractual obligation.

“I think it’s important to find out whether these glitches could also be the subject of a compensation claim by the Commonwealth so we can claw back some of the money in terms of the cost blowouts and also the inevitable millions of dollars that will be spent in compensation claims.”

Senator Xenophon maintains the Auditor-General still needs to investigate.

“The real concern I have is that on July 1st, once tax time starts for millions of Australians, we’ll have a situation where we have an IT system that isn’t able to cope.”

Opposition assistant treasury spokeswoman Sussan Ley says the inquiry must begin immediately.

“I’d like to see the reasons for people’s refunds being so long-held… to be the key for the investigation. But also the constant shifting of the goal posts from the Tax Office needs to be a focus of this investigation because I was told three weeks ago that the situation was resolved. Subsequently it clearly hasn’t been,” she said.

“We now have even more returns outstanding than the number given to me three weeks ago. So clearly the ATO is not even keeping up with those that are being lodged in the meantime.”

Ms Ley is not confident the ATO will clear the backlog by the end of April.

“On past form I don’t think it’s achievable to have this situation resolved in a little under a fortnight, but I do welcome that commitment and it does need to happen and Minister Sherry needs to stay on top of the situation,” she said.

“I would like to remind him that he is the Minister for Tax Administration in this country and it’s Minister Sherry and Commissioner [Michael] D’Ascenzo, not the other way around.”

Policeman admits illegal steroid importation

A Northern Territory police officer has escaped criminal conviction for importing a prohibited drug into Australia.

Constable Sandor Bolgar, 33, pleaded guilty in the Darwin Magistrates Court to importing 15 satchets that contained testosterone last October.

The court heard Customs officers intercepted the drugs in the mail, and he initially lied to police about the drugs.

His lawyer told the court the constable bought the steroids over the internet because he was feeling run down at work.

The magistrate said the police officer had since been prescribed similar steroids by a doctor, and she ordered him to serve a 12-month good behaviour bond.
