Railway motormen call off their strike

Mumbai, May 4 (ANI): Mumbai”s railway motormen called off their strike after two days here following assurances from Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil that all cases registered against them would be withdrawn and their demands would be looked into with some seriousness.

“There will be no action taken against the motormen. All cases registered against them would be taken back,” said Patil.

“All the motormen suspended would be allowed to resume their work,” he added

Earlier today, over 170 motormen were detained under the Essential Services Maintenance ACT (ESMA) after it was imposed by the Maharashtra Government to force them resume their work with immediate effect.

State Chief Minister Ashok Chavan took the decision after an emergency meeting with senior railway police and state administration officials.

Earlier, the Central Government had given a green signal to the State Government to impose ESMA on the striking motormen.

Earlier this morning, the Central Railway suspended 20 motormen under the Railways Act for their refusal to end their strike, terming it as illegal.

Train services on Central and Western lines in Mumbai continue to remain badly affected, as the motormen have refused to end their indefinite hunger strike.

Central Railway authorities said they would run only 30 per cent of their services today.

The motormen”s strike threw life out of gear for the city”s 70 lakh train commuters.

Around 1,000 motormen of both Central and Western Railways went on a hunger strike to press for higher pay scales and allowances from Monday morning, causing immense inconvenience to daily commuters.

The Railway Ministry contends that the motormen are demanding higher pay than what has been recommended by the Sixth Central Pay Commission and additional allowances, which are not included in the Pay Commission”s recommendations.

The ministry further said that some of their demands regarding national holidays and night duty allowances have already been met.

It has asked the general managers of Central and Western Railways to take all necessary steps in coordination with the Maharashtra Government to ensure minimum inconvenience to daily commuters.

“Railway will not hesitate in taking the stringent action against those who are not heeding to our request,” said Anil Saxena, spokesperson of Indian Railways.

The striking motormen had earlier said their protest would continue for the next few days if their demands were not met. (ANI)

Maharashtra Government issues notice to Gaikwad on Kochi IPL controversy

Mumbai, Apr 16 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government has reportedly sent a notice to Deputy Regional Transport Officer Ravi Gaikwad in connection with the Kochi Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise.

Ravi Gaikwad is the brother of Rendezvous Sports World”s Shailendra Gaikwad. The
duo own 26 percent stake of the Kochi franchise.

State Home Minister R R Patil has reportedly said strict action would be taken against Ravi Gaikwad, if he is found to have done anything.

The state transport department had earlier initiated suspension proceedings against Gaikwad on finding him absent from duty.

Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil asked the department to submit a suspension proposal at the earliest.

“I am surprised to learn that Gaikwad has been missing from duty since he was shunted out of Mumbai after the imported bike scam,” said Patil.

Gaikwad had been transferred to Beed after his name figured in a scam about the registration of imported bikes.

But instead of assuming charge of his new assignment, Gaikwad chose to go on leave.

Sources said the Maharashtra Government will have to seek the permission of the Bombay High Court prior to issuing the suspension orders. (ANI)

Bombay HC questions how a law can prevent women from working in bars at night

Mumbai, Mar 26 (ANI): The Bombay High Court on Friday questioned a Maharashtra State law that prevents women from working in bars and restaurants after 9.30 p.m.

Judges linked the law to that of laws prevailing during Nazi rule in Germany.

“Where are we living? In Nazi Germany?” asked Justice F I Rebello.

It was felt the law mainly targeted women working as waitresses and singers in bars.

In its affidavit filed before the court the Maharashtra Government claimed that women working in bars come from “the poor strata of the society, and are prone to illegal exploitation at the hands of male customers, hotel staff, etc. Hence, they are not allowed to work after 9.30 pm”.

The Womanist Organisation of India (WOI) and the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHAR) challenged the Bombay Shops and Establishment Act, 1948 saying it is discriminatory.

The petitioner drew the attention of the court that the same rule does not apply to five-star hotels.

During the hearing, the petitioner informed the court that women working bars have to carry a document containing their personal details at all times. (ANI)

Mumbai, Mar 25 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government on Thursday undertook wholesale changes in the Mumbai Police force. It transferred Additional Director General K P Raghuvanshi from the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to the Law and Order Department.

Raghuvanshi”s transfer is being attributed to his going public on information related to terror suspects.

Joint Police Commissioner of Crime Rakesh Maria is expected to take over as the state”s new ATS chief.

Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu Roy is likely to replace Maria as Joint Police Commissioner of Crime.

Sources said Maria met Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil after the reshuffle.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had earlier said he was aware that the Central Government was unhappy with the way certain information was given away soon after the arrests.

Raghuvanshi was appointed ATS chief on June 11, 2009 after Hemant Karkare had lost his life in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. (ANI)

Maharashtra Cooperatives Minister Harshwardhan Patil, Water Resources Minister Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar and Tribal Minister Babanrao Pachpute flew in by a helicopter from Mumbai to Ralegaon Siddhi and held discussion with Hazare.

Mumbai, Aug 24 (ANI): The Maharashtra Government has filed an appeal in the Bombay High Court challenging the revocation of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) provisions in the September 2008 Malegaon blasts case.

The court will hear the matter on September 8. It asked the state to serve a copy of the appeal to the 11 accused.

The Malegaon blast investigations were the first instance of an official probe, which charged a Hindu terrorist group with involvement in serial blasts. (ANI)

Manmohan Singh speaks with Azad over swine flu outbreak

New Delhi, Aug 9 (ANI): Taking a serious view of the swine flu outbreak in the country, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today spoke with Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and reviewed the situation.

During the conversation, Dr. Singh asked Azad to inform him about any aggravation in the H1N1 virus outbreak. He also asked him to appoint a panel of doctors to remove the false impression about the virus and make the public more aware of the disease.

Dr Singh also asked the Health Ministry to make sure that only doctors in the panel and not health ministry officials be allowed to brief the media over the swine flu situation in the country.

Meanwhile, with three of the country’s four swine flu deaths occurring in Maharashtra, the state government is considering a proposal to restrict movement of people in public places.

The move was discussed at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

According to sources, the Maharashtra Government is considering the adoption of the ‘Mexican Model’, which endorses restrictions on access to public places.

Under the Mexican Model, schools and colleges are closed down for a specific period of time.

Earlier talking to reporters, Azad had defended the UPA Government’s actions on curbing the spread of the disease. Azad said: “Swine flu has been spreading across the world since April… it came into India later. We have contained the (H1N1) A virus to a big extent.”

“We took steps which other nations didn’t. We screened people coming into India at airports and sea ports,” Azad added. Earlier, a 43-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) died of swine flu at the City Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad.

With this, the country has seen four deaths from swine flu and the number of infected cases rising to 782.

On Saturday, 53-year-old Fahmida Panwala from Mumbai and 42-year-old teacher Sanjay Tukaram Kokre from Pune had died of swine flu.

Earlier on August 3, a 14-year-old schoolgirl Reeda Shaikh had died in Pune. (ANI)

Describing Phule as one of the finest and most loved Marathi actors in performing arts, Soni said that the void created by the death of Phule would be hard to fill.

She has conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the family of the veteran actor.

The 77-year-old Phule is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Phule, born in 1931 in Pune, is best remembered for his performance in ‘Sakahram Binder’, the famous play written by Vijay Tendulkar.

He began his career in film acting in 1968 with ‘Ek Gaon Bara Bhanagadi’ directed by Anant Mane, which became instant hit.

After this success, he never looked back and went on to act in nearly 250 Marathi and Hindi films.

Bombay High Court scraps quota formula for college admissions

Mumbai, July 6 (IANS) Bombay High Court Monday struck down the Maharashtra government’s proposal to reserve 90 percent of college seats in the state for students from the state board.
The government had proposed only 10 percent of seats in junior colleges for students from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISCE). The rest were for students passing the Class 10 exam conducted by the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Spelling a major setback to the state government, a division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari also lambasted the authorities for taking a “hasty decision” in the matter.

This is the second time in two years that the court has pulled up the government for its attempt to ensure that over 200,000 students of the state board get the measured share of seats and that the 25,000 students from other boards did not get an upper hand in admissions to prestigious colleges.

The judges’ ruling came in the final hearing of a plethora of petitions challenging the government resolution on the 90:10 seat sharing formula, which they termed as “arbitrary, un-constitutional and taken without application of mind”.

The judgement was welcomed by parents of students hailing from the CBSE/ICSE boards who were anxiously waiting for the admissions to begin for the junior colleges for the academic year 2009-2010.

The court said the decision was brought in for political ambitions and to favour the local board students. It “itself was self-contradictory, self-discriminative and conflicting with the objectives with which it was introduced”, the judges observed.

The court felt that the classification of students as coming from the state board and non state boards was “artificial and imaginary”.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asserted that they would not challenge the order in the Supreme Court. “We respect the court order,” he said.

Chavan said the 90:10 formula decision was taken after due consideration of the number of students from the state board and non-state boards.

K.P. Raghuvanshi – New ATS Chief – Maharashtra ATS Chief – K.P. Raghuvanshi is Maharashtra ATS chief

Mumbai, June 11 (IANS) Hours after being pulled up by the Bombay High Court for not appointing a full time chief of the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), the Maharasthra government Thursday evening named K.P. Raghuvanshi as the new head of the elite counter-terrorism force.

Home Minister Jayant Patil also announced in the Maharashtra assembly that the post has been upgraded to the level of additional director-general of police from special inspector general of police.

Raghuvanshi, presently the additional director-general of police (Railways), has been holding additional charge of ATS since Nov 27, 2008, after its then chief Hemant Karkare was gunned down during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

More than seven months after the attacks, the absence of a full-time chief of the ATS had irked the Bombay High Court, which Thursday asked the Maharashtra government to appoint a new chief for the force within a month’s time.

Presently on a fortnight’s leave and in New Delhi, Raghuvanshi told IANS that he would assume charge after resuming duties but declined to answer any further questions.

The first chief of the ATS when it was set up in 2004, Raghuvanshi brings with him a rich experience in investigating several terror incidents in Mumbai and around the state.

He had led the investigations into the Mumbai suburban trains serial bombings of July 11, 2005, and later took over the probe of the Malegaon bomb blast of September 2008.

Karkare had been appointed as the head of the elite squad in January 2008 and served in that position for barely 11 months until his death in the Nov 26 terror attacks.

Roofless Slumdog kids express desire to keep both the houses

Mumbai, May 30(ANI): On being offered houses by Maharashtra government and the ‘Jai Ho’ trust, the child actors of Oscar winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ have expressed their desire to keep both the houses offered to them.

The Maharashtra government and Jai Ho trust had offered houses to Rubina Ali and Azharrudin Ismail after their slums were demolished by civic authorities.

“I want both the MHADA house and the ‘Jai Ho’ trust house. The house given by ‘Jai Ho’ trust is very nice. It is Santacruz and has bathroom, kitchen and is very big, I liked it a lot,” said Azharuddin.

However, the state authorities have clarified that the kids cannot keep both the houses, and they will have to choose between houses offered to them by the trust and the Maharashtra government.

Though Rubina expressed some concern about the government house being away from her school, she said she would take it anyway.

“I’ll take it but what they (state authorities) are giving is in very far off place. I’ll have to travel a long distance to come to my school here,” said Rubina.

While the kids want to keep both the houses, the parents are yet to decide as to which house to take.

“Whatever we get is acceptable to us. The government is also giving us rooms that we have not refused. I had gone to talk to the authorities and asked them for some time. Now Azhar’s family and my family, we will sit together and decide what to do,” said Rafiq Shaikh, Rubina’s father. (ANI)

Old buildings in Mumbai undergo repair before monsoon

Mumbai, May 14 (ANI): With the meteorological department predicting an early monsoon this year, civic authorities in Mumbai are gearing up to prevent calamities arising in the city during the rainy season.

During monsoons in Mumbai the city gets flooded with rain water, throwing the normal city life completely out of gear.

The buildings collapsing during the monsoon are rather common, often causing loss of human lives. In order to prevent such incidents during this year’s monsoon, the civic authorities are seized with repairing old dilapidated buildings.

The civic authorities along with the Maharashtra Housing And Area Development Authority (MHADA) recently identified 40 such residential buildings as dangerous, which are in dire need of repair.

The authorities plan to evacuate these buildings and complete the repair work before the arrival of monsoon.

The residents will be provided an alternate accommodation till their houses are declared safe to move in.

“This year we conducted a survey and around 35-40 buildings were identified as dangerous which are in need of repairs and there is a need for shifting the residents to safer place. We will be undertaking this work before monsoon.

So the residents of these buildings will be shifted to transit camps and after repair the building would be given back to the residents,” said Pritamkumar Shegaokar, Housing Minister, Maharashtra.

While the authorities make tall claims, residents of one such dilapidated building allege apathy. They say that the authorities are negligent despite several applications.

“During monsoons the condition of Mumbai is very pathetic and especially that of the old buildings. It is the duty of municipal authorities and the Maharashtra government to undertake the repair work of all such buildings before monsoons. There are many buildings, which are very old.

The building in which I live in is itself around 100 years old and has already undergone repair work twice but again it is in need of repairs for the third time but after giving so many applications we have not been able to divert the attention of the authorities towards this problem,” said Prafula Desai, a resident.

Nearly every year, the annual monsoon rains, though vital for India’s agriculture and overall economic growth, kills hundreds of people and destroys huge swathes of land. (ANI)
