Hard-line Iran prez bats for co-ed colleges

TEHRAN: Iran’s political power struggles have brought no shortage of cutthroat intrigue with careers ruined, government officials arrested and even accusations of black magic. And now this — firebrand president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the voice of liberal dissent.

That’s the latest twist in the showdown between Ahmadinejad and Iran’s ruling clerics. Ahmadinejad — reviled by the opposition as a figurehead of hard-line rule — is now temporarily in the reformists’ corner by opposing plans to segregate male and
female students at Iranian universities. “It is necessary to swiftly prevent these backward, shallow-minded actions,” Ahmadinejad wrote in an order addressed to members of his Cabinet.

It also nudged the political dramas further into territory that’s surprising even by Iran’s roughneck standards, where potshots and bitter quarrels are common fare in parliament and elsewhere. This time, the battle is Ahmadinejad versus the theocracy that once backed him.

Lily Allen wins three Ivor Novello Awards

London, May 21 (ANI): British singer Lily Allen has bagged three Ivor Novello Awards.

Her single ‘The Fear’, No1 for four weeks in February last year, won Most Performed Song and Best Song Musically And Lyrically at the songwriters’ bash on May 20.

Allen, 25, and Greg Kurstin, with whom she penned a string of her hits including ‘The Fear’, together won Songwriters Of The Year.

“I didn’t realise I was an exceptional songwriter. I just thought I wrote nursery rhymes – little ditties that I write for myself. I am overwhelmed,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

She wants to establish herself as a hitmaker for hire and has set her sights on adding extra magic to chart-topping acts such as Lady Gaga, whose ‘Just Dance’ was knocked off No1 by ‘The Fear’.

“I’m still writing songs all the time and I won’t be writing just for myself any more. I want to write for Lady GaGa,” she added. (ANI)

US folk singer Mary Travers passes away at 72

London, Sept 17 (ANI): Mary Travers, a member of the hugely popular 1960s US folk group Peter, Paul and Mary, has died in the US. She was 72.

Travers joined forces with Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey in the early 1960s. The trio formed the folk band Peter, Paul and Mary, mingling their music with liberal politics, both onstage and off.

Peter, Paul and Mary had hits including If I Had a Hammer, Lemon Tree and Puff, The Magic Dragon.

They won five Grammies and released a five-disc box set of their greatest hits, Carry It On.

They were strong supporters of the civil rights movement and opponents of the Vietnam War. (ANI)

Magic ink to revolutionise full-colour printing

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Magic ink developed by South Korean engineers is set to revolutionise full-colour printing.

The M-Ink can be used to produce any colour in the visible spectrum and could lead to a new method of cheap and instant full-colour printing.

The research team led by Sunghoon Kwon at Seoul National University in South Korea borrowed the novel idea from nature.

Many insects and birds owe their bright colours to the interaction of light with fine-patterned surface textures.

Researchers have long experimented with replicating these so- called structural colours in synthetic materials.

According to Kwon, M-Ink contains three ingredients: magnetic nanoparticles 100 to 200 nanometres across, a solvation liquid, and a resin.

The nanoparticles disperse throughout the resin, giving the ink a brown appearance. But after applying an external magnetic field, the nanoparticles immediately snap to the magnetic field lines, forming chain-like structures.

He said regularly-spaced nanoparticle chains interfere with incoming light, so that the light reflected from the surface is of a particular colour.

“Adjusting the magnetic field strength shifts the spacing of the field lines and changes the colour,” New Scientist quoted him as saying.

After the desired colour is produced the nanoparticles can be fixed in place by exposing the ink to UV light, which cures the resin

“You can pattern A4-size [letter-size] full-colour prints within a second,” Kwon said.

“You can build papers displaying unique features on application of an external magnetic field,” he added.

The study is published in Nature Photonics. (ANI)

Now, a simple computer game that can help stop smammers in their tracks

Washington, July 16 (ANI): Computer scientists at Newcastle University have come up with a simple game that can turn a tedious manual labelling task into a form of light entertainment, and simultaneously help companies improve their chances of tackling online spammers.

Dr. Jeff Yan and his PhD student Su-Yang Yu call their innovation ‘Magic Bullet’.

The researchers highlight the fact that commercial websites like Google and Yahoo use Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) to defend against malicious Internet bots, which spread junk emails or grab thousands of free email accounts.

They say that a common approach to testing its robustness is to try and attack or break the scheme.

According to them, this involves acquiring a set of labelled samples, but as computers find it difficult to recognise distorted test or images, this task usually falls to human researchers.

“Manually labelling samples is tedious and expensive. For the first time, this simple game turns it into a fun experience with a serious application as it also achieves a labelling accuracy of as high as 98 per cent,” says Dr. Yan.

Since spammers can misuse computer programs that can automatically bypass a heavily used CAPTCHA, it is important for researchers to understand and improve the robustness of the system in order to stay one step ahead.

To fully evaluate the robustness of a CAPTCHA scheme, at least 10,000 segments usually have to be labelled – a task that cannot be automated.

Dr. Yan and Yu say that their Magic Bullet is a dual-purpose online shooting game that can be played just for fun, but also contributes to solving a real problem.

Players are randomly pitched against each other, with two in each team. They cannot communicate with each other, and security techniques are used to ensure that they are geographically apart to reduce the likelihood of cheating.

Just in case there are not enough human players, one of two types of bots-a Data Relay Bot that replays data from old games or a Tailored Response Bot that acts according to an opposing team’s performance-will be introduced.

A randomly chosen segmented CAPTCHA character appears in each round, and shoots towards the target only when both players correctly identify it before their opponents.

Although the computer does not know which character each of the segments is, the answers given by the winning team can be accurate labels for the segments in the majority of cases.

The researchers have also included a high scoring table in the game in order to encourage players to return to improve on a previous score.

“An average game session produced 25 correct labels per minute, giving 1,500 per hour. Although this is not particularly fast, if touch typists were used it would be noticeably improved, and also players need time to get to know how the game works,” says Dr. Yan.

“As this game supports a large number of parallel sessions, which are limited only by the network bandwidth and game server’s CPU and memory, there is also a lot of scope to increase the labelling rate dramatically,” he adds.

A presentation on the research team’s findings were made at the ongoing IJCAI’09, a leading artificial intelligence conference in Pasadena, CA, USA. (ANI)

Michael Jackson wants bowling alley in Britain home

London, June 8 (IANS) Pop legend Michael Jackson wants a bowling alley and a fully-functional funfair installed in the grounds of the home he is renting here.
Jackson has told the promoters behind his 50-night performances in London about his preferences, reported thesun.co.uk.

The 50-year-old is renting a 15 million pounds country estate where he will stay during his shows that begin July 13 and wants all the modifications to be done before that.

“Michael is quite particular. He’s missed living in Neverland since debts forced him to get rid of it four years ago. He thinks he can recreate a bit of its magic in Kent and concert officials are happy to indulge him,” said a source.

“He loves bowling, so has insisted an alley be created and he’s never lost his love of funfairs, so has demanded one be built in the grounds,” added the source.

Julia Roberts deliberately hides her career from kids

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Hollywood actress Julia Roberts has revealed that she deliberately hides her career from her children, as she doesn’t want to ruin the magic of flicks for them.

The ‘Pretty Woman’ actress, who is a mother of twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 4, and Henry, 2, may be one of the most renowned actresses in the world, but her kids are oblivious of the fact.

“They don’t know what I do – yet. I kind of like it that way. I don’t know what they’re going to ask me when they do realise and I don’t know what I’m going to tell them, because I want movies to stay special for them for as long as possible,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling New magazine.

Julia has revealed that she has already lied to daughter Hazel about the basics of filmmaking.

“My daughter said to me the other day that Maria in The Sound Of Music sounded a lot like Mary Poppins. I said it’s because they’re both English! I didn’t want to say, ‘Well, it’s because Mary Poppins is really Julie Andrews, who’s an actress,’ because that would burst that perfect bubble. So I prefer not to deal with it right now,” she said. Justin Timberlake, Ciara get all licky on new video shoot

Washington, May 11 (ANI): American singers Justin Timberlake and Ciara reportedly got so carried away with the shooting of their new video that they ended up licking each other.

The two had teamed up for the shooting of ‘Love Sex Magic’, which appears on the R and B singer’s new album ‘Fantasy Ride’.

As per the promo, there was a lot of on-set chemistry to cause them to nibble on each other’s ears.

“We were just trying to do some fun, playful things, just to give the record and the video another edge. We freestyled a bit, said we were going to try a few things,” Contactmusic quoted Ciara as telling the New York Post.

“After a while, we’re doing it again and again. Now I feel awkward when people say, ‘What did his ear taste like?’” she added. (ANI)

Chelsea’s Lampard hails Barca’s Messi

London, May 3 (ANI): Chelsea’s Frank Lampard has hailed Barcelona’s Lionel Messi as the best player on the planet.

According to The Sun, the England star believes Messi will be the biggest threat to the Blues’ hopes of clinching a place in the Champions League final.

Lampard said: “Barcelona are a formidable team. They have such attacking strength with Messi, Henry and Eto’o. And in midfield they have Iniesta and Xabi driving them forward. The passing and movement of them all is top, top drawer.”

“But I rate Messi the best. He is the best player in the world without a shadow of a doubt. By a country mile in fact. He is absolutely fantastic. OK, I don’t think in the first leg he delivered what people were expecting of him. But believe me the man is a genius and he can explode with a piece of magic that can change a game. He wasn’t in top form at the Nou Camp. That could make him all the more determined to produce at the Bridge,” he added.

“So whoever plays at left-back for us will have to be at their very best to deal with him.”

Lampard says Chelsea are buoyed after securing a 0-0 result in Spain but says the semi-final is still too close to call.

He added: “I don’t think anyone is favourite to go through, the match is just so evenly balanced.” (ANI)

Miss USA Kristen Dalton not taking sides in Carrie Prejean controversy

New York, Apr 24 (ANI): The newly crowned Miss USA is not taking anybody’s sides in the controversy surrounding runner-up Carrie Prejean’s anti-gay marriage comments.

Prejean’s response to the question by judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay gossip blogger, led to a huge furore, with many arguing that the answer cost Prejean the crown.

But, the crown-wining beauty Dalton is in no mood to adding more fuel to the fire and is thus being diplomatic.

“Carrie is obviously very passionate about her beliefs,” The New York Daily News quoted Dalton as saying at City Harvest’s ‘Practical Magic’ event.

She added: “I respect her as an American, a fellow competitor and her friend.

“Although I’m her friend, [I don't want to defend her to her detractors] because that’s their right as well. They feel really strongly about their opinion for pro-gay rights, and that’s great.” (ANI)

Pierce propels Celtics past Heat for 60th win

BOSTON (Reuters) – Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combined in a strong fourth quarter to lead the Boston Celtics to a 105-98 win over the Miami Heat Friday.

Pierce scored nine of his 28 points and Allen had seven of his 21 in the final seven minutes to help the Celtics post their sixth successive victory and 60th of the year.

The win gives the reigning NBA champions a two-game lead over the Orlando Magic for the second seed in the Eastern Conference with three games remaining.

“It takes a great amount of focus (to win 60),” Allen told reporters. “We have a bunch of selfless individuals and regardless of who was in there everybody focused on their job and what they needed to do to make this team better.”

Dwyane Wade led the Heat with 31 points and nine assists, while rookie Michael Beasley scored 23 points and 13 rebounds in a losing effort.

Despite the loss, Miami retained the fifth-seed position in the Eastern Conference.

Both teams entered the game missing several injured players.

Boston’s Kevin Garnett missed his 19th game in the last 23 while trying to recover from a knee injury before the post-season starts and power forward Leon Powe is still out with knee condition.

Miami returned second-year guard Daequan Cook, who missed the team’s last game with a sore shoulder, but forward Udonis Haslem is out for the rest of the regular season with a thumb injury.

Pierce tallied 21 second-half points to help settle a tight game. He made two free-throws to break a 95-95 tie with 1:37 left and, after a jumper by Glen Davis, added two more to give the Celtics a 101-95 lead with 32 seconds to go.

Davis finished with 22 points and eight rebounds while Pierce added eight rebounds to keep Boston in top form.

“We’re a team that really doesn’t make excuses,” said Pierce. “We feel like this is what we are supposed to do regardless of our injuries and the guys we throw out there.”

Obama makes presidential pitch for 2016 Olympics to be held in Chicago

Washington, Apr 5 (ANI): US President Barack Obama in a video welcomed Olympic evaluators to Chicago to begin the task of grading whether the city is ready to host the 2016 games.

Obama described Chicago as an international city that he and his wife and children call home, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Obama, who remains overseas, described a city that grew up under architect Daniel Burnham’s refrain – used a lot in the city’s bid for the games – “make no small plans, they have no magic to stir the soul,” and called the city a great American melting pot.

“It’s a city where the world’s races and religions and nationalities all live and work and play and reach for the American Dream that brought them here; where our civic parades wave the colors of every culture; where our classrooms are filled with the sounds of the world’s languages,” he said, noting that jazz, ranchera and bhangra can be heard “down the street from one another.”

But beyond that, the President told the 13-member International Olympic Committee’s evaluation commission, Chicago is his home.

“After your visit, once you discover the Chicago that I know – the city that I made my home, the city where my wife grew up, the city where we raised our daughters just blocks from where these games will be held – I am confident you will discover that you’re already in the perfect host city for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” the President said.

While Chicago is the first to be evaluated, the IOC team will also be grading finalist cities Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo.

Today’s closed-door discussions will focus on environmental issues, transportation, proposed sporting venues across the city, and the Olympic Village planned for the Michael Reese Hospital campus in the 2900 block of South Ellis.

The IOC evaluation commission will tour the venues and Olympic Village site on Sunday. By the time they wrap up their work on Tuesday, the group will be prepared to report back to the 100-plus members of the IOC, which will vote on a host city for the games on October 2 in Copenhagen. (ANI)

Jacko to enlist magician David Copperfield’s services at O2 shows

The duo are also reported to have drawn up plans for high wire routines and a levitation trick.

Plans for the show have gone ahead, with for more than 100 mirrors and dry ice being ordered.

“Jacko and David have been close pals for years,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“Michael is a massive fan of magic and has been to see all the big illusionists in Vegas over the years.

“He has some very clear plans on what he wants the show to include and feels David is the man to help make them happen. It’s not just about music for Michael, it’s about the show.

“The levitation stunt will be something special,” the source added. (ANI)
