Bond of life: 007 ties knot

LONDON: British actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have married, a US representative for Craig said on Sunday.

“They are married,” said an LA spokesman for the 43-year-old actor, best known for playing superspy James Bond in the film franchise. He provided no more details.

People magazine said the couple, who were first cited as a couple last autumn, married in a quiet ceremony in New York on Wednesday.

Weisz, 41, won an Oscar for her role in ” The Constant Gardener” and starred in ” The Mummy.” The newlyweds play husband and wife in the upcoming “Dream House” , due out in the US in September. The British actors had been quietly dating. The wedding previously was reported by the British newspaper News of the World.

Craig is the latest James Bond and will star in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” He entered the international spotlight when he starred in “Casino Royale” and ” Quantum of Solace” as James Bond.

The James Bond star, who was married to actress Fiona Loudon for two years (from 1992-94 ), has a 19-year-old daughter, Ella. Craig was also involved with Satsuki Mitchell, before calling it quits in early 2010. Weisz, 41, who split from ‘Black Swan’ director Darren Aronofsky last November, has a five-year-old son Henry

Sex abuse scandals shake Church but not faith

Sexual abuse by clerics and accusations of cover-up have rocked the Roman Catholic Church and disturbed churchgoers around the world, but many believers say the scandals have not shaken their faith.

From Rome to Rio de Janeiro, Paris to Dublin and from Warsaw and Washington, Easter sermons were overshadowed by allegations of priests molesting children, especially in Europe and the United States, and the Church’s mishandling of the crisis.

Across Pope Benedict’s native Germany, hundreds of long-concealed reports of sexual abuse have emerged and shattered a notion abuse was only a U.S. and Irish problem.

Clerics in Germany used Easter sermons to pray for the victims as public sentiment against the Church turned decidedly negative in recent weeks. Thousands formally quit the Church in the last month and many more are contemplating leaving.

“It’s the greatest loss of confidence in the Catholic Church since the Hitler era,” said Christa Nickels, a member of the Central Committee of German Catholics and a Greens party leader.

“If you talk to people, they’re stunned, they’re speechless and they’re confused, especially if they might know a priest who was abusing children all along,” Nickels told Deutschlandfunk radio. “There’s been a massive loss of confidence.”

A victim hotline set up last week in a bid to win back trust by Stephan Ackermann, Bishop of Trier and the Church’s expert on abuse, was swamped with 4,459 calls on its first day and had to shut down. Only calls from 162 victims could be answered.

The pope’s popularity has plunged. A poll by Stern magazine found one in five Catholics say the abuse scandal is making them consider leaving the Church. Only 31 percent say the pope is doing a good job, down from 70 percent in 2007.

But Karsten Marcinkowsky, one of Berlin’s 300,000 Catholics, said his belief and the scandals are two separate issues.

“What happened is terrible but it hasn’t shaken my belief at all,” said Marcinkowsky, 43, a computer specialist.

In Bethlehem, where Christians believe Jesus was born, Mayor Victor Batarseh, himself a Catholic, said Church members were ashamed of the abuse carried out by priests.

“His holiness the pope should give a straightforward answer to all these things that have been done by some of the priests in the Catholic Church,” he said.

SHOCKED AND DISAPPOINTED

Similar views could be heard over the Easter weekend in many different languages in countries around the world.

In Warsaw, Anna Boetzel said the Church should condemn the abuse, express remorse and do all it can to make sure it stops.

“It’s a deeply saddening matter for me,” said Boetzel, 55, a retired school teacher.

“But I definitely don’t plan to leave the Church, even though it has shocked me. I’m disappointed. I believe the Church should condemn these cases, show it regrets the wrongdoing and vow to do everything to make sure it never happens again.”

In Paris, a communications industry worker named Michel said it was unfair for the media and public at large to cast doubt on the entire Church because of the crimes of a few.

“Sin is everywhere, including the Church,” he said.

“There’s maybe one priest in 1,000 condemned of paedophilia. That means 99 percent never did anything. If you ask a sports teacher about paedophiles, there may be more than one in 1,000 but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop physical education.”

In Austria, Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn apologised for the abuse at an emotional pre-Easter mass.

“For some of us, the Church’s immaculate appearance was more important than anything else,” Schoenborn said. “We confess our guilt to the many whom we have wronged as the Church, and whom some of us have wronged very directly.”

MISTAKES MADE

In New York, churchgoers at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan said they too were appalled and saddened.

“My confidence is shaken that they are not doing all that is necessary but I think that’s changing now,” said a man named Tom, 57, who asked that his surname not be used. “It’s disappointed me greatly. It hasn’t shaken my faith.”

In Mexico City, Antonio Barrera was leaving a Good Friday service. “The priests did stupid things,” he said. “Their crimes have definitely damaged the Church. I believe these priests should be jailed.”

In Brazil, Miriana Lima was heading into Sao Paulo Cathedral. “The church has really been shaken by this,” she said. “The Pope needs to resolve it.”

New e-nose can reveal smokers without need for blood, urine tests

London, September 16 (ANI): An electronic nose foil some people’s attempt to deceive their doctors by telling them that they are non-smokers, in order to get cheaper life insurance.

Paul Thomas at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, has revealed that their invention is a tweaked form of a commercially available e-nose.

The researcher says that it can detect the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the breath of a person who had smoked a cigarette.

The e-nose uses an array of 32 sensors whose electrical resistance changes as different VOCs are detected.

During a test, the researchers could correctly identified 37 out of 39 volunteers as either smokers or non-smokers relying upon on the resultant “smellprint”.

Based on their observations, the team came to the conclusion that such e-noses could quickly and reliably reveal smokers without the need for a blood or urine test.

The current method of measuring the carbon monoxide content of exhaled breath to confirm smoking activity picks up a smoker for only a few hours after their last cigarette.

It is even prone to error because it cannot tell whether carbon monoxide in the breath came from other sources such as traffic exhaust fumes.

Insurers are very interested in whether a person applying for health or life insurance smokes – for obvious reasons.

“Some insurance providers don’t ask questions about smoking at all, while others ask the question on an application form but do not require a test as the applicant is expected to answer the question honestly,” New Scientist magazine quoted Kelly Ostler-Coyle, of the Association of British Insurers, as saying.

By making the test simple and reliable, an e-nose could provide doctors with the truth in minutes, according to the researchers.

They, however, admit that their system needs further testing to prove its worth.

“This e-nose idea, whilst of interest, will require larger-scale trials to demonstrate clinical efficacy and patient acceptability before it can be considered for use,” says a spokesman for the UK Department of Health.

A research article describing the innovation has been published in the Journal of Breath Research. (ANI)

Cancer-stricken Patrick Swayze dies at 57

Washington, Sept 15 (ANI): Veteran actor Patrick Swayze died of pancreatic cancer on Monday, aged 57.

Whoopi Goldberg, who starred with Swayze in one of his biggest movies ‘Ghost’, remembers Swayze as “funny man”.

“Patrick was a really good man, a funny man and one to whom I owe much that I can’t ever repay,” said Goldberg,

“I believe in Ghost’s message, so he’ll always be near,” she added.

“Patrick lived a hundred lifetimes in one,” said Rob Lowe, who appeared with Swayze in ‘The Outsiders and Youngblood’.

“I will remember him for that, and I will remember him for how much he loved his wife Lisa. He was such an intense actor, so full of passion and vigor. He definitely made the most out of it. It’s a sad day,” he added.

Swayze was diagnosed with advanced stage of pancreatic cancer in January last year.

However, he kept shooting for A and E series ‘The Beast’ while undergoing chemotherapy and never lost hope. (ANI)

Lee declares his goal for breaking 100 mph bowling speed barrier

London, Sep.14 (ANI): Fresh from destroying England with a scorching display of fast, swinging yorkers that skittled stumps all over Lord’s to help Australia seal a series-clinching 4-0 lead with three ODIs remaining, Brett Lee has declared his goal of breaking the 100mph (160.93km/h) speed barrier.

That feat would be worth a fair sum for a fast bowler who has already earned three million dollars in the past 12 months, according to Forbes magazine.

Lee could not force his way back into the side for the Ashes series and his Test future remains unclear but the 32-year-old remains far more marketable than his bowling peers.

The combination of blond-haired, blue-eyed good looks and sheer speed is an irresistible combination for some brands.

To date, only Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar has broken the 100mph limit, clocking 100.2mph (161.3km/h) during a World Cup match against England in 2003. Lee’s fastest delivery was recorded at 99.8mph (160.7km/h) at the same tournament.

“I know I’m in the team to try and bowl fast, there’s always talk about your age but I’m feeling really fit, probably the fittest I’ve ever felt,” Lee said after taking 5-49 at Lord’s on Saturday, clean-bowling four victims.

“I’m only 32 and I want to keep bowling in excess of 90mph for a long time yet but we’ll wait and see what happens with the body,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

“I’m just happy to be here, and I’m excited for everyone to win,” Us magazine quoted her as saying. (ANI)

‘Scared’ Kristen Stewart ‘stocks garlic to keep away vampires’!

Washington, September 14 (ANI): Actress Kristen Stewart is reportedly so scared of vampires that she keeps a huge stock of garlic at home to keep them at bay.

The ‘Twilight’ star, who plays Bella Swan in the hit vampire series, was said to be so terrified of the mythological blood-sucking creatures that she hangs pouches of the foodstuff on her bedroom door.

The 19-year-old even keeps an emergency stash in her car, according to sources.

The ‘Twilight’ actress, who plays Bella in the vampire film franchise, is so terrified of the mythical blood-sucking creatures she festoons her home with cloves of garlic in an attempt to deter them.

“People are always remarking how smelly it is, but Kristen doesn’t care,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling National Enquirer magazine.

“She’s been afraid of vampires for years, even before she signed up to do the movies, and read somewhere that garlic is supposed to repel them,” the source added. (ANI)

The Victoria’s Secret model, who is expecting her fourth child next month, sported a tiny backless snakeskin dress while posing for the camera.

“She might be a mum of three already but Heidi has still got it. Men go wild for her,” News of the World quoted an insider at the photo session, for the New York Post’s Page Six Magazine, as saying.

But the 36-year-old German, married to British singer Seal, may disagree with the suggested popular opinion.

Klum previously said: “The last month (of pregnancy) is unbelievable, how rapidly your stomach goes. It’s huge. The thighs, the butt – everything explodes.” (ANI)

Guy Ritchie often forgets the movies he has made

Washington, Sep 12 (ANI): Brit filmmaker Guy Ritchie has revealed that he often forgets the movies he has made.

Ritchie, 41, has directed a number of pictures, including gangster movies ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘Snatch’.

He says that he often has to reacquaint himself with his classics.

“I forget I’ve done them. So if ever they’re on, I’m unaware I had anything to do with them. If I were now to watch Snatch or Lock, Stock… I couldn’t tell you what scene was coming next,” Contactmusic quoted him as having told Britain’s GQ magazine.

“It’s embarrassing to say this but I’d probably really enjoy watching them. I’d be sitting there at the end, like a mug, clapping my own film,” he added. (ANI)

Gisele Bündchen due in December

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Supermodel Gisele Bündchen’s husband has confirmed that the model is pregnant and is due in December.

Tom Brady said in an interview with ESPN’s Chris Berman that the couple is expecting the baby in the year-end.

The New England Patriots quarterback mentioned that he was also ready to attend Lamaze classes with the beauty.

“I told her no Sundays. It couldn’t be harder than training camp, so I’ll be prepared,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

He added: “The women are the ones who have to do the work. We just have to be there to support them and so it’ll be nice to do that.”

Brady already has 2-year-old John Edward Thomas with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.

However, it will be the first child for Bündchen. (ANI)

Meet Michelle Obama, the First Lady of Hugging

London, Sept 12 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama loves to hug everyone she meets as it makes others feel relaxed.

Obama admits that she gets just as much out of being affectionate as those being hugged.

“I’d be intimidated, too, to meet the First Lady,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling Woman and Home magazine.

“That’s why I’m so touchy with kids, because I think if I touch them and I hug them, that they’ll see that it’s real and then relax and breathe.

“And actually I kind of enjoy the time and make use of it,” she added. (ANI)
