DMK wants 7 Cabinet berths in the new UPA govt.

Chennai, May 17 (ANI): Having played a key role in ensuring a United Progressive Alliance’s success in Tamil Nadu, the M.Karunanidhi-led Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam is likely to ask seven cabinet berths in the new set up of government at the Centre.

DMK wants to retain Surface Transport and IT ministry among others, a Times Now report quoted sources as saying on Sunday.

DMK sources had earlier stated that they were eyeing cabinet posts for Kanimozhi, Maran and Azhagiri.

Sources said that DMK chief and chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi would visit the national capital on Monday (May 18) to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the matter.

Putting up a strong showing, the UPA constituents DMK and Congress were racing to capture a lion’s share of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. “I give credit to the DMK government in Tamil Nadu. The mandate is clear,” said Maran, former Communication and IT Minister.

Seven paramilitaries, four naxals killed in Orissa mine encounter

Koraput (Orrisa), Apr. 13 (ANI): Seven CISF personnel and four Maoists have been killed in a gun-battle that took place when hundreds of ultras attacked an ammunition store and bauxite mine of NALCO in Orissa’s Koraput district on Sunday night.

More than 100 mineworkers who were taken hostage, are reported to be safe.

Before leaving the area, the Maoists, including some women, robbed the CISF of huge quantities of sophisticated arms, ammunition and explosives.

“Seven jawans of CISF posted at the hilltop bauxite mines in Damanjodi area were killed in the gun battle that continued till early morning after the Maoists attacked it last night,” Orissa’s Director General of Police, M Praharaj, said.

According to sources, the number of killed CISF personnel has reached 11.

NALCO Chairman and Managing Directror C R Pradhan informed that all the employees are safe and free.

“They were set free at around six in the morning after the special operation group reached the spot,” Pradhan said.

The Maoist attack was apparently aimed at unsettling the upcoming polls process.

Sunday’s encounter comes almost s month-and-a-half after the congress party revealed that it would bring out a comprehensive report on the naxal menace in Orrisa.

Naxalites or the Maoists have been termed as terrrists. The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, is on the record as saying that this menace needs to be tackled head on with the help of an anti-naxal task force. (ANI)

Moily files nomination from Chikballapur

Bangalore, Apr 2 (ANI): Senior Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister, M Veerappa Moily, today filed his nomination for Lok Sabha elections as a Congress candidate from Chikballapur constituency.

Earlier in the day, he resigned as the Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC). Moily as the ARC chief was instrumental in bringing out reports on a variety of topics concerning governance as also one on terrorism.

Moily is confident of winning the election as the constituency is believed to be the strong hold of the Congress party since independence.

Moily said that he will seek votes on the work done by him as Karnataka Chief Minister, and promised voters to develop world class infrastructure as the international airport is near by.

He also wants to make Chikballapur a cultural and educational hub.

Commenting on the BJP Government in the state, Moily said the BJP has no ethical value at all and it only wants to spread terrorism in the country.

He added that people especially the youth will teach BJP a lesson as it want to go for election on communal lines.

Moily said that BJP prime ministerial candidate LK Advani is not efficient to become premier of the country. (ANI)
