Nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival begins all over India

New Delhi/ Faizabad/Allahabad, Sept 19 (ANI): The nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival began across India with religious fervour on Saturday.

Thousands of devotees queued up at various temples dedicated to Goddess Durga.

In New Delhi, devotees converged at Jhandewalan to offer prayers prior to dawn and observed fast throughout the day.

“We observe fast on the first day of Navratri. On the first day, we pray for the whole day and meditate on Goddess Durga,” said Madan Gehlot, a devotee.

Meanwhile, at Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, people made a beeline to the temple of Goddess Badi Devkali.

The devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled if they pray to Goddess Badi Devkali during the festival.

“People believe that coming here redeems them from their sins. Since the Goddess Devkali is the deity of Lord Rama’s dynasty, her significance is all the more. That’s why people come here to offer prayers to the Goddess,” said Poonam, a devotee.

Earlier on Friday, a day prior to the commencement of Dusshera, a unique annual horse procession was taken out through the streets of Allahabad.

The belief is that the horse representing sage Vyasa would relate the Ramayana.

Musical bands led the attractively decorated white horse procession organised by a leading Ram Lila committee of the city.

“Legend says that when Maharishi Valmiki narrated the story of Lord Rama to Luv and Kush then this horse standing next to them also listened to the story. The horse in the form of sage Vyasa tells the story of Rama to people during the Navratri celebrations,” said Ajay Kumar Shukla, secretary, Ramlila Committee.

“Naaratri”, which literally means nine nights, is observed twice a year.

The festival lasts for nine days in honour of nine manifestations of Durga, goddess of power, and fall in the months of April-May and September-October.

It is believed that during the Navratri, Goddess Durga descends on earth to rid it of the demons and blesses her devotees with happiness and prosperity. (ANI)

Atheists ‘more successful at online dating’

London, Sept 16 (ANI): People who don’t believe in god are more likely to achieve success at online dating, according to a new study of opening messages.

Self-effacing men are also more likely to get a reply to their approaches, while nothing turns off potential dates more than textspeak like “ur” and “luv”.

The researchers analysed 500,000 “first contacts” sent by users of OkCupid, the leading US dating website, and found that nearly 42 per cent of messages, which included the word “atheist”, received replies, significantly higher than the average response rate of 32 per cent.

The study also showed that references to “Christian”, “Jewish” and “Muslim” only had a marginal success rate, reports the Telegraph.

Moreover, mentioning “god” in a first approach actually discouraged people from replying.

The research also suggests online daters to avoid making personal compliments too early like “sexy” and “beautiful”, which reduced response rate.

It showed that people who used the words “good taste” or “you mention” in their messages pushed their response rates close to 50 per cent.

In addition, dreary greetings such as “hi”, “hey” and “hello” are far less successful than sparkier openings like “how’s it going” and “what’s up”.

The results of the analysis were published on OkTrends, the dating website’s official blog. (ANI)

Jessica Simpson denies ‘show with Britney Spears’ claims

Washington, Apr 21 (ANI): Popstar Jessica Simpson has rebuffed reports claiming that she is keen to team up with Britney Spears for a TV show.

It had been claimed earlier that Jessica wants to collaborate with the ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ hitmaker for comedy show based on the lines of much-loved series Laverne and Shirley, according to U.S. tabloid the Globe.

It was also claimed that Britney loved the idea and would join Jessica once she is through with her ongoing Circus tour.

However Jessica’s father Joe Simpson has refuted the claims through his Twitter page.

“Rumour incorrect… no jess-brit show.. luv (sic) brit.. just no show,” Contactmusic quoted Joe, as stating on his Twitter page. (ANI)

Twins were to marry this year

NEW DELHI: “The Jain brothers always set examples for this colony. Even in their death, they have become our heroes by donating their eyes,” said
an emotional Naresh Kumar, RWA president of Laxmibai Enclave DDA flats and next-door neighbour of Luv and Manish Jain.

As the entire colony assembled outside the Jain residence on Saturday, Mahesh Jain, father of the twins, was trying to controls his tears outside the morgue at BJRM Hospital. “My sons always wanted to serve society. I respect their decision to donate their eyes,” he told Times City. The doctors first completed the donation process before conducting post-mortem as the operation has to be completed within a stipulated time.

“Luv and Manish were working at Goyal Sarees for the past five years. They had put in a lot of hard work and established a new shop at Ring Road Mall near Rohini. The shop was to be inaugurated on Saturday. My sons reached home around 2am on Saturday after making the final arrangements and were ready by 8.30am for the formal launch. It was all in vain,” said Mahesh.

The father said it was shocking to discover his sons lying lifeless on the road. “I got a call around 9.30am to reach BJRM Hospital. My youngest son, Ankit, rushed to me around the same time to tell me that there had been an accident in our neighbourhood. When I reached the spot, I found my sons lying on the ground. The policemen stood surrounding them but made no attempt to lift them…I will never forget this day,” said Jain, barely able to control his tears.

Family members said Luv was going to marry on June 26 in Haryana. “We were looking for a bride for Manish too. Since they were twins, we hoped to get both of them married in the same year,” said one of relatives.

Mahesh says he remembers the last conversation he had with Luv. “I insisted that I go and visit the new showroom, but he said that only a puja would take place on Saturday. Instead, he wanted us to visit the showroom on Sunday when everything would be functioning,” he said.

Love letters, poems fast becoming history under technology onslaught

London, Feb 10 (ANI): Romance is being brutally murdered by technology and fast pace of life, says a new UK study.

The National Trust found that most pairs would rather send a cursory text message saying ‘I Luv U’ rather than compose a heartfelt letter or poem.

Email is also preferred over pen and paper, the survey of 2,558 people showed.

According to the study, almost two-thirds (62 per cent) had never sent a love letter.

But more than two-thirds (69 per cent) had texted “I love you” – or various abbreviations of the message – via a mobile phone, reports the Telegraph.

Andrew McLaughlin, from the National Trust, lamented: “Considering our rich history of romantic letter writers, this really does suggest that we are forgetting to make time for romance in modern Britain.

“As a country, we have produced some of the most romantic writing ever produced in any language – from Shakespeare’s sonnets to touching love letters written by Winston Churchill.

“Even Charles Darwin, while he was busy formulating his theories on natural selection on board the Beagle, found time to send beautifully moving love letters to his childhood sweetheart, Fanny Mosten Owen.

“Yet now we seem to have forgotten the value of putting our innermost feelings down in writing.” (ANI)
