Britney Spears’ ex-manager, mom escalate legal feud

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Did he manipulate, drug and cut off his client from the real world? Was she really the problem, and did she make all this stuff up?

Entertainment | People

We’re, of course, talking about “Britneygate” — the entertaining dispute between Britney Spears’ ex-manager and Britney Spears’ mother that’s now landed on the doorstep of a California appeals court.

In 2008, ex-manager Sam Lutfi filed a defamation lawsuit against Lynne Spears for things she wrote about him in her memoir, “Through the Storm.”

Last August, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge refused to dismiss the case. A few weeks ago, Lynne Spears appealed that decision, and on Monday, Lutfi filed papers, presenting his argument why the case should continue.

Now the Court of Appeal of the State of California gets to hear “Britneygate” and the two widely different tales of who is responsible for the singer’s collapse.

Lynne Spears claims that Lufti was a master manipulator who secretly drugged her daughter, cut off her communications and mobility, and set himself up as “gatekeeper” before he was fired.

In contrast, Lutfi says Britney’s life was already in turmoil before he got involved. His proof: Two failed marriages, losing custody of her child, shaving her head, a reckless driving arrest, drug rehab, etc.

That aspect of the case is really a sideshow, though, to the interesting legal questions.

In pressing her appeal, Lynne argues that Lutfi’s reputation was so low at the time the book was published, he’s “libel-proof” as his reputation couldn’t possibly be damaged further.

Au contraire, says Lutfi’s lawyer.

In his brief to the appeals court, Lutfi points out he’s never been convicted of anything and if his reputation was so badly injured based on a series of tabloid articles, it’s a decision that can only be made by a jury. In addition, he points to the case of Howard K. Stern, who sued for defamation after being accused of having a hand in Anna Nicole Smith’s death. A judge ruled in that case that just because Stern might have been falsely accused doesn’t mean he could not be further injured from false accusations again.

The entire brief is pretty entertaining. For instance, there’s a discussion about whether accusing someone of being “evil,” a “predator,” a “fake” and a “shifty man” are “opinions” or descriptive of “acts of misconduct” that are actionable as libel. There’s also an argument submitted by Lutfi that Lynne Spears is engaging in bigotry because of his ethnicity.

Six held over links to embassy attack

Indonesian police have detained six suspected terrorists on Sumatra island, including people who allegedly took part in the 2004 truck bombing of the Australian embassy in Jakarta.

The swoop was a prelude to two raids in Aceh province on Monday in which police killed one suspected terrorist and arrested four others.

The man killed by police during a raid on a house in Aceh Besar district was identified as Enaltao, 38, who was suspected of assisting Indonesians in military training in the southern Philippines.

National police spokesman Edward Aritong said the six men arrested at a road block on Sumatra were part of a new terrorist group that was disrupted in February when police found a training camp in Aceh.

He says two of those suspects, identified as Ibrahim and Lutfi, had been arrested earlier for their roles in the bombing of the Australian embassy, an attack which killed 10 people.

Mr Aritong described Ibrahim as a “motivator” for trainee terrorists while Lutfi was a “fundraiser”.

Both men are believed to be accomplices of terror leader Noordin Mohammed Top, who was killed by police last September.

They had reportedly served time in prison and been released.

Mr Aritong says another suspect, Bayu Sena, was involved in the making of bombs intended for an attack on Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last year.

The assassination plan was uncovered during investigations into twin suicide attacks on luxury hotels in Jakarta last July which killed seven people.

A fourth detainee, Pandu Wicaksono, was wanted for harbouring Noordin, whose network, dubbed Al Qaeda in the Malay Archipelago, carried out the embassy attack and the Jakarta hotel bombings.

Britney Spears’ mum lashes out at Sam Lutfi

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Britney Spears’ mother Lynne has hit back at her daughter’s former manager Sam Lutfi, insisting that her comments that he is a “fake” and a “predator” are protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Lutfi had dragged the Toxic hitmaker and her parents to court in February (09) accusing them of defamation, libel, battery, breach of contract, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

He said that Lynne Spears comments made in court – and later repeated in her book Through The Storm defamed him.

However, Lynne has filed a new motion insisting her words are covered by the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech.

According to Access Hollywood, she said that her allegations Lutfi is a “Svengali”, a “fake”, and a “predator” – are “mere statements of opinion” made in court as Spears attempted to get a restraining order against her former manager.

She also denied that repeating the allegations in her book could have damaged Lutfi further – because sales of the tome were “relatively unsuccessful”. (ANI)

Britney’s ex-manager Sam Lutfi may have to pay her legal fees

Washington, May 12 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears’ ex-manager Sam Lutfi may be asked to foot her legal fees in a new move by the singer’s lawyers.
Lutfi, who has been slapped with a three-year restraining order, may have to dole out 123,142 dollars to cover the fees brought about by the courtroom battle over the restraining order, reports People magazine.

Spears’ lawyers asked a Los Angeles court to order him to pay, and they are also seeking 129,922 dollars from Jon Eardley, an attorney who has challenged Jamie Spears’ control over his daughter.

They are also seeking 72,292 dollars from her ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib, and both he and Eardley have been ordered to stay away from the pop star.

A judge has yet to sign off on the request. (ANI)

Britney’s ex manager files appeal against restraining order

Washington, May 1 (ANI): Britney Spears’ former manager Sam Lutfi has filed an appeal after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ordered him to maintain his distance from the singer for three years.

The 34-year-old was slapped with a restraining order after Britney’s father, Jamie, alleged that Lutfi and lawyer Jon Eardley had attempted to challenge the validity of Jamie’s legal control over his daughter.

Jamie had further claimed that Lutfi, Britney’s close confidant during her personal meltdown, also arranged the smuggling of a cell phone to the pop star at a hotel.

Lutfi had then been ordered by the court to stay at least 100 yards away from the star, her two sons and her family members’ homes, and was also prohibited from contacting her and her kids, through phone, mail and email.

According to TMZ, Lutfi notified an L.A. court that he would appeal against the ruling that Spears’ restraining order against him was to be made permanent, reports Us magazine.

Byran Freedman, said that “the evidence showed it was Britney Spears reaching out to Mr. Lutfi and all he did was help her get a lawyer.” (ANI)

Britney’s ex manager ordered to stay away from her for 3 years

Washington, April 29 (ANI): A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has issued a three-year restraining order against Britney Spears’ former manager Sam Lutfi.

Attorneys for Britney’s father and conservator, Jamie, had been seeking a long-standing restraining order against Lutfi, the singer’s ex manager and close confidant during her personal meltdown.

And now, Judge Aviva Bobb has ordered Lutfi to keep at least 100 yards of distance from the singer, her two sons and her family members’ homes.

He further must not hassle the pop princess and her kids, or try to contact them through phone, mail and email.

The orders also forbid him from “acting on Ms. Spears’s behalf or purporting to act on her behalf.”

Lutfi’s lawyer Bryan Freedman said he would contest the judgement.

“We absolutely will appeal this ruling. Never before in history has a restraining order been issued against someone who answered another person’s cries for help,” People magazine quoted him as saying. (ANI)

Lutfi’s sister says Britney wanted her brother’s help

New York, Apr 3 (ANI): The sister of Britney Spears’ former manager Sam Lutfi has testified that the pop singer told her in recent months that she needed her brother’s help to hire her own attorney.

Attorneys for Britney’s father and conservator, Jamie Spears, have been seeking a long-standing restraining order against Sam, a manager and close confidant of the singer during her personal meltdown, that forbids him from contacting her.

Sam’s sister Christina Lutfi was called as a surprise witness at a Los Angeles court. She said that she teamed up with Britney to contact her brother in a spy novel-like plan.

Britney, whose phone access is strictly limited by her father, allegedly asked Sam to sneak a cell phone to her at a Beverly Hills hotel in mid- January, according to Christina.

“[Britney] told me she wanted to get a hold of Sam,” the New York Daily News quoted Christina, as telling People magazine.

“She wanted him to help her find a lawyer, and wanted someone to get a pre-paid cell phone to her. She was scared because her father was blackmailing her with visitation rights over her kids,” she added.

Christina said that she met with Britney in a hotel sauna where the singer was handed a phone.

“She asked me, ‘Will Sam be able to help me?’” Christina said.

Britney then hid the phone in a locker.

Jamie Spears, who has controlled his daughter’s personal and financial affairs since early last year, testified back in February that he eventually found and confiscated the phone.

However, Jamie’s lawyer Blair Berk has dismissed rumours that the singer wants to end her father’s legal control.

Britney “was in such fear [of Sam], she asked if I could get him arrested, to keep him away from her,” said Berk.

Meanwhile, Sam’s attorney, Bryan Freedman has denied his client has committed any wrongdoing.

“Sam’s only crime was trying to help out a friend. When someone asks for your help, that person is obviously not scared of you or in need of a restraining order.” Freedman said.

Freedman argued that Spears’ attorneys have not shown enough evidence of ‘substantial emotional distress’ as a result of communication with Sam.

Closing arguments in the case will be heard on April 21. (ANI)

Britney compares dad’s control to “prison”: Lufti’s lawyer

Washington, Apr 2 (ANI): A lawyer of Britney Spears’ ex manager Sam Lufti has revealed that the pop diva’s life under her dad’s conservatorship is like “prison.”

In a hearing in a Los Angeles court, where Spears’ conservators are seeking restraining orders against her former manager Lutfi and lawyer Eardley, John Anderson testified he was contacted by Eardley, to represent Britney in her fight against the conservatorship (which gives Jamie Spears control over her personal and financial affairs).

He also said that Jamie’s control is causing the singer “emotional distress [that is ongoing] now,” reports Usmagazine.

However, Jamie’s lawyer Blair Berk argued that Britney repeatedly told her she did not want Eardley “to have anything to do with her.”

Berk also called Lutfi an “alleged extortionist” after he threatened to release “unflattering information” about Jamie if she didn’t “do something to stop it.”

Jamie’s lawyer also talked about the voicemail that surface on Internet, where Britney was heard asks for help getting out of her father’s control.

Berk said the tape might have been edited, and she does not believe it is Britney.

Lutfi’s sister Christina also testified that, while sharing a cell phone with her brother, Britney called because “she wanted [Lutfi] to get her a new lawyer. She was afraid of her father and wanted a way to get a prepaid cell phone.” (ANI)

Britney’s snapper ex banned from contacting her for 3yrs

Washington, Mar 19 (ANI): A court has ordered Britney Spears’ ex-snapper beau Adnan Ghalib to stay away from the singer for the next three years.

Bobb’s orders have also barred Ghalib from contacting the 27-year-old star directly or indirectly through phone, mail or e-mail, as well as forbid him to claim that he represents her interests.

Others protected by the order include Britney’s parents, siblings, and her children.
he ‘Toxic’ singer’s father, Jamie Spears, who requested the order in January, had accused Ghalib and ex-manager Sam Lutfi of trying to disrupt his daughter’s life.

Britney was hospitalised twice last year, before Jamie gained legal control over her, reports People magazine.

Ghalib is also facing felony charges for allegedly trying to run over a process server. (ANI)

Britney’s hairdresser testifies against ex-manager Sam Lutfi

London, Feb 27 (ANI): Toxic singer Britney Spears’ hairdresser Roberta Romero stood up in court on February 26 to testify against the star’s former manager Sam Lutfi.

Romero revealed that she had received a phone call and numerous text messages from Lutfi, trying to persuade her to pass messages onto Spears, reports the Mirror.

The hairdresser also claimed that the singer was scared of him.

There had not been a restraining order against Lutfi at the time, but he had signed an agreement to keep away from her.

Now Spears’ father, Jamie, is seeking long-term restraining orders against Lutfi and her ex-boyfriend, paparazzi Adnan Ghalib.

The judge extended temporary restraining orders against both men, and a further hearing is set for April 1. (ANI)

Britney’s paparazzi ex charged with felony assault

New York, February 25 (ANI): Britney Spears’ former paparazzi beau Adnan Ghalib has been slapped with several counts relating to a hit-and-run, according to a press release.

Ghalib, whose relationship with the pop princess lasted less than a year before their split in 2008, could land himself in jail for up to seven years if found guilty on the assault charges.

A press release by Los Angeles District Attorney’s office claimed that the snapper faced an assault with a deadly weapon charge, along with battery and hit-and-run, reports the New York Daily News.

It was further alleged that the District Attorney was asking for 110,000-dollar bail after Ghalib allegedly tried to run over a process server with his car in Los Angeles.

The development comes after the 36-year-old, along with and Spears’ former manager, Sam Lutfi, was issued a restraining order after her father accused them of harassing his daughter. (ANI)

Britney’s ex-manager Sam Lutfi denies threatening her with violence

Washington, Feb 24 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears’ one-time manager, Sam Lutfi, has denied that he threatened her with violence.

Spears’ father, Jamie, had testified that Lutfi initiated direct communication with the Toxic singer and was harassing her, despite the temporary restraining order that he’s under.

But Lutfi has denied all claims, and the restraining order against him has not been changed.

“Any communication Lutfi purportedly had with Britney were conveyed by and between Lutfi and Britney through others, including, without limitation, Mr. Ghalib,” Us magazine quoted court papers filed by Lutfi’s attorneys as stating.

“I have not, in any alleged communications with Britney, her hairdresser or any other person, threatened any act of violence against Britney or her family,” Lutfi added in a sworn declaration. (ANI)

Britney’s father sued by her former manager

Washington, Feb 23 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears’ father Jamie has been sued by his daughter’s former manager Sam Lutfi.

Jamie received the hand-delivered lawsuit that claimed that he and his wife Lynne Spears were responsible for damaging Lutfi’s reputation by allegedly leaking false information about his conduct to the press, reports Contactmusic.

The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles court also claimed a breach of contract and assault, and Lutfi says that he is owed more than 800,000 dollars for the time he was employed as Britney’s manager.

As per X17.com, after filing the suit, Lutfi hired a process server to ensure that the legal documents were handed over to the singer’s father, who was at his San Fernando Valley, California home. (ANI)

Spears’ ex investigated for assault with deadly weapon

Washington, Feb 13 (ANI): Pop princess Britney Spears’s ex-boyfriend Adnan Ghalib is under investigation for allegedly trying to run over a process server with his car in Los Angeles.

The man, who was trying to serve Ghalib with court papers on February 9, was not badly hurt and filed a report for assault with a deadly weapon, though Ghalib, 36, is not a wanted man.

“The process server “ended up on the hood of the car, then fell off when (Ghalib) drove away, and ended up with scratches and bruises,” People magazine quoted Lt. Brian Whitten as saying.

“He’s not liable for arrest. We first need to get his side of the story,” he stated.

Ghalib and the Spears’ former manager, Sam Lutfi, were issued restraining orders on January 30, after her father accused them of harassing his daughter.

There have not been any comments so far from Ghalib on the matter. (ANI)

Lufti to make tell-all documentary about Spears’ meltdown

Washington, Feb 5 (ANI): Britney Spears’ infamous ex-manager Sam Lutfi is set to make a tell-all documentary detailing the singer’s highly-publicised meltdown, according to reports.

It is believed that Lutfi is planning out details with U.S. TV network UPN to make the explosive programme.

UPN also broadcasts Spears’ 2005 reality series ‘Britney and Kevin: Chaotic’.

Spears’ parents, Jamie and Lynne, publicly blamed Lutfi for the series of emotional breakdowns that had led Britney to lose custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline in 2007.

But, Lutfi, 34, who was the singer’s manager during her 2007 meltdown, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Spears and her parents on February 4.

He has alleged that their claims that he drugged the star were untrue and had caused him “humiliation” and “distress”.

And now, it seems he is hoping to seek revenge on the Spears family by telling his side of the story to the world.

“Sam has realised that a TV show would get him a large chunk of money and he’s get extra money on the back of it in magazines and newspaper interviews,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling Britain’s Daily Star.

The source added: “This is his opportunity for him to get his lucrative revenge. To be a big earner, this documentary will need to be full of sensational and shocking revelations.” (ANI)

Britney’s mum looking for film deal on her tell-all book?

Washington, February 5 (ANI): Britney Spears’ mum is reportedly on a hunt to find interested parties to turn her tell-all book “Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World” into a movie.

Lynne, who saw her daughter shave her head, divorce from ex-husband Kevin Federline, lose the custody of her kids along with her repeated trips to the hospitals, was said to be on the look out for options to have her personal narration of the Spears family life translated onscreen.

Meanwhile, the mum-of-two, along with her husband and elder daughter has been slapped with a lawsuit by Britney’s former manager and friend Sam Lutfi for libel and defamation, reports Fox News.

In his legal papers, Lutfi was said to have claimed that Lynne’s book had led him to “unfathomable amounts of ridicule and public scorn”, in addition to having allegedly received death threats.

Lynne had penned the allegations that Lutfi wanted to control Britney, drugged her with sedatives and anti-anxiety pills, and deliberately troubled the singer by doing things such as “hide her dog, throw away her cell phone chargers and even disabled her cars so she could not leave the house unattended”. Britney’s dad alleges harassment by her former friends

Washington, January 31 (ANI): Britney Spears’ father Jamie has obtained new restraining orders against her ex-manager Sam Lutfi, former paparazzo-beau Adnan Ghalib and an attorney, alleging harassment on their behalf against the singer, a court has heard.

Both Lutfi and Ghalib had been previously slapped with restraining orders, which prohibited them from contacting the pop princess or coming within 250 yards of her, her property or family members, according to the L.A. Superior Court papers.

Jamie and lawyer Andrew Wallet, who also got a restraining order against lawyer Jon Eardley, were named permanent conservators in last October to look after Britney’s affairs following her two forced hospitalisations in early 2008.

And as per the court papers filed by the duo, the three men “are now working in concert to disrupt the conservatorship with utter disregard for Ms. Spears’s health and well being.”

Jamie claimed that his daughter’s cell phone records show “numerous telephone conversations” and text messages with her Lutfi and Ghalib.

“[Britney] innocently informs [Ghalib] of her destinations and that he then arranges for paparazzi to meet and film her to his financial benefit. “[He] is harmful to Ms. Spears and to her recovery,” People magazine quoted him as saying.

He further alleged that Lutfi had tried to get in touch with his daughter on December 27 and 28, 2008, through her hairdresser, saying, “I’ve done everything I can to free her from this. Very close to getting her free now.” (ANI)
