Anthony Hopkins thinks “actors are the worst bores”

London, May 18 (ANI): Sir Anthony Hopkins hates socialising with movie stars because he claims “actors are the worst bores”.

The Silence of the Lambs star insists actors only talk about films.

“Actors are the worst bores. You can”t talk with them about anything – except old movies,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling German TV station TELE 5.

He added: “I generally don”t go out for dinner with my colleagues if I can avoid it. It”s always the same in the film business. Everybody must go out for dinner or lunch together but nobody feels like doing it.” (ANI)

Boffins develop ”The Kug”: a kettle and a mug!

London, May 12 (ANI): A mug which doubles as a kettle and features a heating element that can boil water in just 90 seconds to make a cup of tea or coffee has been developed.

Kug is the brainchild of Ben Millett, 21, and Alan Harrison, 22, who came up with it for a design project at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.

The pair had been tasked with creating a product to help people with rheumatoid arthritis when they created the Kug.

“As part of our research we met people with the condition to talk to them about what kind of problems they encountered on a day-to-day basis,” the Telegraph quoted Millett as saying.

“And when we stopped for lunch we noticed some of the ladies trying to pour a cup of tea. After chatting to them we found out how difficult it was for them to lift a kettle that”s how it all started.

“We looked at the whole process of making a hot drink – from the kettle to putting a tea bag in a cup and filling it with water. And after lots of concepts we ended up with this idea.

“It meant one less object people would have to deal with and it wouldn”t be such a strain on the wrists, hands and fingers,” Millett added.

The design even won the Arthritis Ireland Easy to Use Design Award.

The Kug, similar in size to a travel mug, is made up of two cups.

The outer cup contains the heating filament and is plugged into a base, which is powered through mains electricity.

The inner cup, which contains the liquid, can be removed and washed after every use.

Millett said: “It works just like an ordinary kettle.

“When the water”s boiled you just take the cup off the base and enjoy your drink. You can also adjust the temperate on the base so it keeps the liquid warm until you”re ready.

He added: “It”s energy efficient and saves water because you only put the amount you actually need into the cup. It”s also portable so you can have it at home or take it in the car with you and have it on your desk at work. And it”s much lighter than a kettle.” (ANI)

“Many sandwiches pack as many calories as a Big Mac,” The Daily Star quoted Nutrition expert Mary Strugar as saying. (ANI)

The Welsh side beat the Foxes 1-0 in the first leg on May 9.

“Gary and I have had a little bet and it’s first leg to me,” the Sun quoted Bux as saying.

“Whoever loses has to do the roast chicken and veg next weekend – and it looks like it could be Gary,” she added.

But the Match of the Day host still has a chance in the second leg, which will take place on May 12. (ANI)

Qld Health memo advised against new payroll system

The State Opposition says Queensland Health (QH) bosses were advised two years ago not to use a new payroll system that has resulted in havoc.

Opposition deputy Leader Lawrence Springborg says QH staff are still going without.

“An allied health worker … has been eating white bread for lunch because she cannot get payment from Queensland Health,” he said.

Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek says a QH memo from 2008 shows a senior executive had misgivings.

“That Queensland Health should remove itself from the whole-of-government payroll initiative,” he quoted.

However Technology Minister Robert Schwarten says the problem has been caused by those using the system.

“Nothing that has come to light has suggested a breakdown in this system,” he said.

The 2008 memo also says $400 million had been burned up across Government on a new technology initiative.

“Powerful folk can be sexy. I adore Clinton; you know, naughty but nice with a very sexy voice. John Major was terribly dry and funny in the flesh too.” Hurley says,” she added. (ANI)

Ban ‘pay per view’ fundraisers: Bligh

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says it is disappointing the Liberal National Party (LNP) has not banned so-called “pay per view” fundraisers.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman, who is a member of the LNP, will charge $1,100 per person for a lunch in May to raise money for his campaign fund.

Ms Bligh says such events erode public confidence in the accessibility of politicians.

“When ordinary people feel that those with more money get more access to politicians then that is not good for democracy,” she said.

“That’s why I’ve banned these dinners within my own caucus.

“I am very disappointed the Liberal National Party have not followed suit.”

“I was very surprised because … she was down to earth. I was nervous at first, but she makes you comfortable right away,” the New York Daily News quoted Harajda as saying.

“It was the First Lady of the United States of America here. How wonderful is that? We were blessed and so is she.” (ANI)

Black Caps frustrate Aussies

Australia is set to bat again in the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington following a morning session of stubborn resistance on day four at Basin Reserve.

The Black Caps, who were forced to follow on, reached the lunch interval on 5 for 266 in their second innings, trailing Australia by 36 runs.

Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori was unbeaten on 60 and Brendon McCullum was not out on 39.

The hosts had started day four on 5 for 187 and needing 115 runs to make Australia bat again, and after a delayed start because of rain and wind, they set about frustrating the tourists’ bowling attack.

Vettori and McCullum scored at a steady run rate to compile a 83-run stand for the sixth wicket with the Black Caps skipper reaching his 22nd half-century during the session.

It was an admirable performance from the pair, considering the meek display produced by the Black Caps in their first innings when they were dismissed for a disappointing 157 in reply to Australia’s 5 for 459 (declared).

Bulls battle losing cause

Victoria is six wickets away from securing its second successive Sheffield Shield title against Queensland, on the final day at the MCG on Sunday.

After resuming at 29 without loss, the Bulls lost openers Wade Townsend and Ryan Broad inside the first six overs of the day to be reeling at 2 for 48 chasing an insurmountable 640.

At lunch, Queensland was 4 for 118 with Lee Carseldine standing firm on 53 and Chris Hartley unbeaten on 2.

Townsend (19) was brought unstuck by Bryce McGain, who landed a wildly-turning off break in the rough outside the left-hander’s off-stump which shot back into the stumps.

Darren Pattinson got his second scalp of the match when he tempted Broad (14) into playing at an outswinging delivery outside his off-stump.

The ball found the edge of Broad’s blade and flew to Matthew Wade for an easy catch.

Carseldine and Chris Lynn righted the ship for awhile but their 62-run stand was ended by McGain, who bowled Lynn for 21.

Bulls skipper Chris Simpson again failed to have an impact, falling for a seven-ball duck in the same fashion as Broad.

Bulls watch Shield slip away

David Hussey reached his century as Victoria pushed the Sheffield Shield final further from Queensland’s reach before lunch on day four at the MCG on Saturday.

With skipper Cameron White by his side on 47, Hussey (126 not out) took the Bushrangers to the break at 3 for 396, a virtually unassailable lead of 444 with a day-and-a-half to play.

Victoria only needs a draw to retain the Shield and the Bulls’ efforts with the ball in the morning session proved fruitless at attempting to stave off that result.

Aaron Finch was the only man to fall on Saturday, departing on 63 when he was run out by substitute fielder Jason Floros.

Cameron Boyce, the sole wicket-taker in the Bushrangers’ second innings, bowled efficiently in the morning session but was unable to make a breakthrough.

England defeat Bangladesh in Chittagong Test

Chittagong (Bangladesh), Mar. 16 (ANI): England defeated Bangladesh in the first Test against Bangladesh by 181 runs, but were made to work hard on the final day.

Junaid Siddique and Mushfiqur Rahim survived unscathed until lunch, with the former bringing up his first Test century in an inspirational knock, the BBC reports.

England looked short of ideas but Graeme Swann removed the pair in quick succession after a 167-run stand. The spinner then wrapped up the win to finish with match figures of 10-217 as the hosts crumbled to 331 all out.

The victory margin was convincing from England – and Alastair Cook will be satisfied with his first Test in charge – but Bangladesh”s fight during the second half of the game made them dig deeper than they would have imagined. The efforts of Siddique and Rahim should give the home side great heart.

The defeat means Bangladesh go 1-0 down in the two-match series

England 599 for 6 dec and 209 for 7 dec beat Bangladesh 296 and 331 (Siddique 106, Rahim 95, Swann 5-127) by 181 runs (ANI)

The party was hosted at his Brighton pad and apparently the ‘Mysterious Girl’ hitmaker laid on a huge platter of Greek “Souvla” goodies.

He hailed the divorce as the end of his “marriage from hell”.

“My friend Ryan came over to help with the cooking, making jerk chicken and lamb stew,” the singer added.

The pop star’s kids Junior, four, and Princess Tiaamii, two, were also present.

Friends revealed that Andre was sad when his marriage collapsed but has been trying to rebuild his life.

Dropped Hughes sought Tendulkar’s wise counsel over lunch

Sydney, Sep.13 (ANI): Out of favour Australian opening batsman Phillip Hughes had lunch and a long one-hour chat with Sachin Tendulkar when he was in India. He also spent some time in Nagpur with his coach Neil D’ Costa, who is contracted to the Vidarbha Cricket Association academy.

“The first thing Phillip said when he arrived was ‘I can’t change the past, but I can prepare for the future’,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted D’Costa, as saying from Nagpur.

“He got dropped and it was upsetting, but Phillip knows that in the Australian cricket team there are no apprenticeships. At that moment in time the selectors thought it was best he was not in the team and so be it. Phillip has already moved on from that,” he added.

“He was extremely mature about his work over here,” D’Costa said.

Hughes’s next assignment will be the shortest form of the game, the Champions League in South Africa. (ANI)

David Hasselhoff left terrified during encounter with tiger shark

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): American actor David Hasselhoff has revealed that she was left terrified after an encounter with a tiger shark on a recent shark-spotting trip to South Africa.

Hasselhoff, 57, got up close and personal with the animals as he made a series of films, entitled ‘David Hasselhoff’s Sharkwatch’, for The Underwater Channel.

But during one terrifying encounter, the ‘Baywatch’ star feared he would end up being lunch.

“Suddenly, a tiger shark loomed towards me – a big girl, around 10 foot long. Although I’m six foot and no lightweight, I felt as if I appeared nothing more than a snack to her,” Contactmusic quoted him as having told Britain’s Hello! Magazine.

“She opened her huge mouth. All I could see were rows of white razor-sharp teeth. I held out the bait, hoping that would keep her happy,” he said.

Lucky for him, the trick worked and the shark retreated, but the incident has left him shaken.

“I admitted to (the show’s expert) Mark that I’d been more scared than I’ve ever been when the shark had opened her mouth,” he added. (ANI)

‘New yoga’ Knitting – the ideal way to combat work stress

London, Sept 3 (ANI): Move over water and nude yoga – and make way for “the new yoga”: Knitting.

Health officials at NHS Highland have concluded that knitting is a good way to keep work stress at bay, reports The Daily Express.

Following a new initiative, workers at NHS Highland have been striking new friendships over balls of wool at lunch, instead of grabbing a sandwich.

Organiser Fiona Clarke, health promotion specialist at NHS Highland, described knitting as “the new yoga”.

She said: “Every knitter knows it is good for you because it really calms you down and de-stresses.”

The initiative is available to around 100 finance, management and board staff. (ANI)
