Kahlon-Chitkara tiff reaches cricket ground

The ongoing tussle between RTI activist Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon and Ludhiana Cricket Association general secretary Vinod Chitkara spilled over to the cricket ground at PAU on Sunday, after Kahlon allegedly abused two players on the ground.

Kahlon and Chitkara have been at war over the issue of election of players for the under-15 team. Kahlon’s son, too, is a cricketer and was not selected for the team, which according to him, was done to accommodate Chitkara’s son. Kahlon even showed some documents to prove that Chitkara’s son was over-aged and did not qualify for the team and that he was using his position to get his son selected.

The police had to be called in to control the situation. The ruckus broke out when Chandigarh was playing Ludhiana in a domestic cricket match. It has been learnt that Kahlon abused players Rahul Singla and Varun Chitkara, who lodged a complaint with the umpire, who took up the matter with game referee Jasvir Singh. Singh, meanwhile, said, “The police are looking into the matter. We will also report the issue to the Punjab Cricket Association.”

Kahlon rubbished the entire issue and said, “The matter is quite the contrary. I reached the ground around 11.30 in the morning. Ajay Singla and his son Varun approached me and started abusing me. I called in the PCA and seeing the police, they backed off. The moment the police returned, these two again began abusing and manhandling me. I went to the police station and recorded my statement . These two never even reached the police station.”

He said, “Like Vinod’s son, Ajay Singla”s son, too, was found over-aged for the under-19 team last year. Chitkara is already facing an FIR filed by me. Moreover, had I abused the boys, why no one else heard the abuses? The umpire or the referee did not hear anything. This shows the complaint is completely false.”

Water pump sales flow cash for manufacturers in Punjab

Ludhiana, Mar 20(ANI): While declining water table in Punjab is causing worries to farmers and environmentalists, it has also become a major profit making opportunity for companies that manufacture submersible pumps.

Punjab is dependent on the monsoons for irrigation, but facing constantly lowering water table, submersible pumps are increasingly being used for agriculture. Their demand is expected to rise by additional 10 percent this year.

Girish Garg, an employee of Gargson, which manufactures submersible pumps, said that there is a rise in demand of high-power pumps.

“The water table of the area is going down. Accordingly, the horsepower capacity of the submersible pump motors are also increasing. Earlier only 10 pumps of 7.5 horsepower used to function in the entire area. Now, the areas closer to the rivers use 7.5 horsepower pumps; rest of the areas readily use 25-30 horse power pumps,” said Garg.

The constant decline has forced farmers to look for new options every year, which has added to their expenses.

“Every year we have to increase the depth of the pump by 10 feet. This increases our charges by Rs 50,000 and the electric load also increases, which in turn increase our overall expense. Every year we come to this fair to see which pump extracts ample water and is available at what price,” said Rashpal Singh, a farmer.

The agriculture sector”s growth in Punjab slowed down to a dismal 3.51 percent in 2008-09 due to dwindling water and soil resources, stagnating crop productivity.

That has caused a decline in the state”s contribution in the GDP from 23.47 percent in 2003-04 to 19.49 percent in 2008-09. (ANI)

Ludhiana hosts seminar on Sufism

Ludhiana, Sep 19(ANI): Ludhiana recently played host to a national seminar on Sufism. This time, the theme was the influence of Sufism on modern times.

The Sahitaya Academy of New Delhi and the Punjab Sahitaya Academy organized the seminar.

The seminar also focused on the ‘pain of separation from God’ and intellectuals, poets and Sufi singers.

“Sufism says that God, whom a man looks for all over, is within him. And once he realizes this fact, he will be free of his ego and will find happiness,” said Vaasthe Mohi, a Sindhi poet from Ahmedabad.

While, Gulshan Majith, a poet from Jammu and Kashmir, said: “When God is everything, so what is the importance of religion and caste discrimination, this is the message of Sufism. Shaivaism, Buddhism and Sufism give same message to the world and consider this world as the manifestation of that supreme power and do not make a distinction with the other. There are no boundaries. Everybody in this world is equal for God.”

The participants also put forth the argument that many Punjabi poets make use of themes from popular Punjabi culture. r. Chandraprakash Deval, a poet from Rajasthan, said Sufism is the paramount method to fight terrorism.

“Sufism is the best way to fight terrorism. If the minds of people can be changed, they will start respecting other religions, humanity and the feeling of brotherhood and secularism will increase, terrorism will be finished then. So to fight terrorism it is important to popularize the way shown by Sufism, adopt and follow that way and spread the feeling of brotherhood,” Deval said.

Sufi singer Balbir Kaur, who also teaches singing at Guru Nanak College in Ludhiana, held the audience spellbound and she also highlighted that school students must be made aware of the great cultural heritage, traditional folk art and literature of the Sufi saints, to promote Punjabi language.

Associating Sufism with any one religion is against its very basic tenets. Underlining this basic fact, renowned Sufi singers Idrim Khan and Skakur Khan from Rajasthan sung the verses of Bulle Shah, Guru Nanak, Kabir and Sajjan Shah. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Ludhiana, Aug.30 (ANI): Satinder Sartaj is today known as a poet and sufi singer not just in Punjab all over the country, even abroad among ethnic Indians.

Born in a sleepy Bajrawar Village of Hoshiarpur, Sartaj holds a Doctorate in music and is today promoting Punjabi Sufi music among music lovers.

He has performed in several countries and is a name to reckon with in the music world.

“I can say about myself that I love simplicity. I try that my poetry should be ‘simple’ and ‘uncomplicated’, which a common person can easily understand. It’s not that you use difficult vocabulary. I always try that my composition be such that the audience can hum along with it. Noted singers say that to make a simple composition is a tough task whereas to make tough composition is simple. I think ‘simplicity’ in my singing has attracted the listeners,” said Dr. Satinder Sartaj, Punjabi Sufi Singer.

He believes that when a singer writes his own verses, he can do justice to it. He can sing it with great passion.

Dr Satinder Sartaj’s talent was acknowledged at the 32 nations Dubai International Cultural fest 2003 where he received the Best Sufi Singer award. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Demand for private detectives on increase in Ludhiana

Ludhiana, Aug.25 (ANI): There is an unprecedented surge in the demand for private detectives in Ludhiana, which has created an excellent business opportunity for the detective agencies who promise people an in-depth information about just anything.

Private detective agencies are mushrooming, as they offer services to investigate domestic, corporate and criminal cases.

As the number of fraudulent marriages by NRIs goes up in Punjab, parents of would-be brides are hiring detectives before giving the final nod.

The agency operators also help in doing character verification or knowing various other personal things related to boy or girl to be married. It also includes checking the family’s social reputation and background, information on employment, status of the would-be NRI groom as well.

These people carry out their activities under secret surveillance.

The charges for investigative work start from 160 dollars and can go up according to the status of the client and the person under surveillance. It also depends upon the expectation of the clients from investigative matter or case.

“The cases mostly include the investigation by a wife of her husband and vice-versa and even the parents hire us for investigation of their children. We assure our clients that their information will be confidential. But if something happens against the law or according to our Indian constitution, we can inform the Police about it,” said Mansingh Rana, Owner of Kaushik Detective Service.

“Some matrimonial cases also come to us. We checked the information given by the boy who says that he has come from a foreign country for a month’s time and he is working as an engineer there. To find out the reliability of the information given by the boy we contacted our sister concerns in the foreign countries and came to know that the boy is working as an ordinary labour there,” Rana added.

In many cases, where people demand documentary evidence such as photographs, the rate goes up further. For premarital investigations, people from various villages and urban areas approach these agencies for a background check of the groom.

45-year-old Sandeep Kumar is in a dilemma. He runs hosiery business in partnership in Ludhiana and looks after sales while his partner deals with purchase of raw materials and production. Currently, his company is not doing well.

The profits have been going down despite good sale orders, and Sandeep now wants this investigated by a private detective agency.

“Earlier our business was flourishing. But, despite getting good sale orders our profit has been declining. I have a doubt that my business partner, who in my absence, do some fraud. I have come to take the help of a detective agency to investigate my case. I just want know the reason of loss in my business, said Sandeep.

With many individuals adopting fraudulent means to get things done, becoming a victim of some scam are increasing. And, there is no option but to rely on private detectives. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Indian textile and apparel industry set to grow

Ludhiana, Aug.19 (ANI): With a strong domestic demand and the stimulus provided by the government, Indian textile and apparel industry is confident that it would grow.

With the Central Government recently offering aid under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme, the Indian textile and apparel industry is confident that it will be able to handle market competition and grow, especially in the export sector.

The Indian textile companies are now aggressively upgrading their technology to compete in the global market.

India is the second largest textile economy in the world after China. But the slowdown being witnessed in the U.S. and Europe has also caused an impact on its growth.

In the last eight months, India’s five-billion dollar strong textile export sector has witnessed a sharp fall of 33 per cent.

Exporters have been asking for a billion dollar aid for market development and other tax benefits to target newer markets since the U.S. and the European Union countries, which constituted over 60 per cent of the exports, are saturated.

Recently, the government came to their rescue and decided to give 510 million dollars as financial help to domestic textile firms to upgrade their manufacturing units. The aid under the Textile echnology Upgradation Fund Scheme is seen as a stimulus to the sector.

“3,140 crore was allotted to the MoT which was never done earlier. And this was allotted to promote the Textile Upgradation Fund Scheme, which is the most popular scheme in independent India, which has really brought in lot of investment to the tune of 166,000 crores in the textile industry,” said Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Textiles recently.

This is for the first time such a large sum of money has been released at one-go under the scheme. The fund has been transferred electronically through more than 121 financial institutions and banks to the accounts of 12,514 beneficiaries.

The government has already disbursed 1.64 billion dollars under the scheme launched in April 1999.

“If we can increase its capacity as well as quality, definitely the foreign buyers will prefer India instead of China. That means scope for investment in textile industry is still there. So, I would not say that in the spinning only, spinning is already in a sufficient capacity in India, but the value added products in garments and accessories. So there is a big scope of further expansion,” said jit Lakra, Managing Director, Superfine Knitters Ltd., Ludhiana.

Attracting investment would be government’s thrust area to push industry growth rate to 8-10 per cent from the current level of six percent.

To achieve this target the textile ministry plans to attract investments worth over 31 billion dollars over the next five years.

Also, the Indian exporters are looking at newer markets like Latin America, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. And small-scale apparel and accessories manufacturers and exporters are optimistic about weathering the crisis.

“In the so-called recession period we are doing better than the past years, because we are dealing in fashion accessories. So our items start with 50 cents, 1-2 dollars. So in this recessionary period a woman when she has to change her attire, she would start to change her look with a cheaper item.

She could just change her earrings, she could just change her bangles and she could change her scarf rather than going for a new dress or a new hand bang or new shoes. So, that’s why our sales have increased in these periods,” said K.S.Kohli, proprietor of Kohli Associates Pvt.Ltd.

Textile sector in India accounts for around 8 per cent of GDP, contributes 14 per cent of the value addition in the manufacturing sector and more than 30 per cent of the export earnings of the country.

It is the single largest employer with an estimated workforce of 35 million.

Shrinking global demand has resulted in job losses in the sector, but the government has promised to create 10 million jobs over the next five years.

The government has also announced the constitution of a 41-member working group to form a national fibre policy, aimed at making India self-sufficient in fibre consumption and export requirements. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)

Indian footwear market has large potential

Chandigarh, July 13 (ANI): The Indian footwear market has recently seen a demand shift from low-priced footwear to medium and high-priced products. But the huge potential that this development creates is as yet largely untapped.

The growing aspiration to look trendy but comfortable has increased the demand for footwear having international high-fashion brands in Punjab.

And for the brands, it is an opportunity to provide the Punjabi consumer with products that have a classic elegance – tasteful luxury, enduring quality and fine imprint of craftsmanship.

Jimmy Choo, Pavers England, GUCCI, Moschino – just to name a few, the global luxury brands in footwear have already entered the Indian market.

Till a few years ago, buying a foreign footwear brand would require a trip abroad, a gift from overseas friends/family or at the most an online purchase.

But it changed with the permission for 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in single-brand outlet in early 2006 that allowed foreign footwear brands to enter India.

It also strengthened the organized retailing in footwear. The affluent customers in India today have a wider choice in buying stylish and comfortable shoes.

“There is a huge potential I would rather see. People are willing to shell out money for a good product. They need styling. They need comfort and if that comes for a price. Why not! At Show Tree we are selling at somewhat around INR 12,500 a show of Lacoste and it’s selling. There is a very huge potential provided the shoe should be very comfortable and stylish in that matter,” said Hitesh Aneja, Brand Head, Shoe tree.

The 500 million dollars Indian footwear market is growing at 15-20 per cent annually. A majority of global brands are foraying into the Indian market through the franchisee route.

Bullish about the Indian market, Reebok, an International footwear brand, is expanding its reach by joining hands with Franchise India Holdings Limited, an integrated franchise and retail solution provider.

People in the Indian middle class today have more money to spend on quality and designer footwear, and the working class too wants comfortable, durable and trendy shoes that they can wear at workplace.

They are now more brand-conscious then before.

“There would be 2-3 main reasons. First would be definitely the comfort level. You can find out shoes for 1000-1500 rupees but they are not much comfortable and I feel that the leather shoes of these big brands have longer life and longer shine. I am looking for some Italian brand shoes and definitely they give good comfort like sport shoes. In leather shoes, you find comfort in these brands only,” said Bhupender Jeet, an employee with the Multi National Company from Ludhiana.

“We get quality shoes by paying more. So that’s not a concern. The branded sandals are more comfortable. And comfort can’t be compared with the cost. Cheap quality shoes are not durable where as branded footwear is long-lasting,” said Manjula, a local resident of Chandigarh.

Shoes, say lifestyle Pundits, are second only to clothes in terms of importance and the styles are mostly Western.

Presently, the shoes are available at a price range of 50 to 500 dollars USD or more.

No surprise then that be it Moreschi of Italy, Bali and Rosetti of Switzerland or Merrell of the U.S. – all are willing to come to India. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Muslims protest killings of their community in China ethnic clashes

Ludhiana, July 9 (ANI): Muslims here have protested against the ethnic violence between Han Chinese and Muslim Uighurs that has left at least 156 dead in China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang.

Congregating outside the Jama Masjid, they burnt the national flag of China and raised slogans to stop atrocities on Muslims.

“Two Muslim workers in a factory were killed in China. Hundreds of Muslims had gathered to stage a silent protest against the killings, which we came to know through the press. The Chinese Government could not tolerate this and ordered a crackdown killing 150 Muslims. This bloodshed of Muslims will not be wasted,” said Maualana Habib-ur-Rehman, a Muslim cleric.

Rehman also threatened that if the violence on Muslims does not stop in the coming days then they would issue a fatwa calling for boycott of Chinese products.

“Chinese items will be boycotted. If needed, we will talk to Muslim councils in the country and issue a fatwa forbidding Chinese products,” he said.

Xinjiang province has long been a hotbed of ethnic tension in China. Uighurs make up around half the 20 million population.

They’re angry about a recent influx of Han Chinese and government controls on their religion and culture.

The violence was triggered by a rumour that Uighurs had raped two women.he allegations sparked a brawl at a factory, which spread. The government is clearly trying to halt that spread.

Almost one and half thousand people have been arrested and soldiers have been told not to let their guard down. (ANI)

BMW India doubtful about Mini launch

BMW India doubtful about Mini launch

Kolkata, July 9 (IANS) German automobile major BMW AG is doubtful about launching its “Mini” small cars in India this year, a top official said here Thursday.

BMW’s luxury hatchback cars that cost around Rs.20 lakh ($41,068) are coming under the Mini brand.

“Talks are still on regarding the launch of Mini brand over here. Market for such cars hasn’t developed in the country yet,” BMW India president Peter Kronschnabl told reporters during the launch of BMW X6 – a sports activity coupe.

He further said the company would assess the Indian market at the end of 2009 and take a call whether to launch Mini cars in India or not.

The Munich-based car last year decided to postpone the launch of Mini small cars for a year.

“If we decide to launch Mini in India, we have to make significant investment into it as the car having a separate brand identity than other BMW cars, have to be showcased through a separate dealers’ network,” Kronschnabl said.

The company sold 2,908 vehicles in India in 2008 and plans to sell more than 3,000 units in 2009, he said.

At present, BMW India has 13 dealers in the country.

“BMW India will further expand operations in 10 additional cities by the end of 2010, which will include dealerships in the markets of Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar and Jaipur,” Kronschnabl added.

He expressed hope that India’s luxury car market would recover in the second half of 2009.

“We feel factors like political stability, pick-up in the reform process and the likely general recovery of the global economy will help us better in the second half of the year than what the industry achieved in the first six months,” he said.

During January-June, only 7,400 luxury cars were sold in the country, a growth of just two percent over the like period last year.

Out of this, BMW sold 1,747 cars, posting a growth of 12 percent.

“While we have grown satisfactorily, a 2 percent industry growth is worrisome,” Kronschnabl said.

The company plans to source engineering services and components, which involve casting and forging from India for its worldwide ancillaries requirements and would sign deals with India’s engineering, casting and forging companies by the year-end, he said.

The German car maker would launch Z4, a sports car, in the country in October this year, Kronschnabl added. (IANS)

Punjab farmers adopt direct seeding method for paddy cultivation

Ludhiana, July 7 (ANI): To overcome the problems caused by shortage of farm labourers and scarcity of water for irrigation, farmers in Punjab have adopted direct seeding methodology for paddy cultivation. The technique has come as a major blessing for paddy growers.

The ‘directly sown paddy’ without the troublesome puddling exercise is a boon for the farmers. The technique brings about a saving of as much up to 150 USD per acre.

The method, which is currently being used in Patiala, Amritsar and Fazilka, helps in tackling the problem of labor shortage and in saving water up to a whopping 60 per cent.

The paddy growers are extremely happy with the technique.

“I gave up the traditional method of paddy sowing. It required water to be filled for 15 days. With direct sowing technique we can save water. I have increased the area under paddy cultivation from 10 acres to 14 acres,” said Manohar Singh, a farmer.

“We learned about direct paddy sowing from other farmers, who successfully used this technique last year. It is better than the traditional ‘puddling’. We are able to save time and water, which is in short supply,” said Sarat Singh, another farmer.

To promote direct paddy sowing in the state many NGOs like Zamindara Farm Solutions have come forward to provide implements and share knowledge about the technique.

“As far as global warming is concerned, we need to stop it by preventing Green House Emissions. We have made a thorough research on the net about the direct sowing technique.

We realized that ‘puddling’ also involves large amount of gases. It is a big source of green house gas emission. We have to save water for a better future,” said, Vikram Ahuja, owner, Zamindara farm solutions.

Many corporates like PepsiCo, working with farmers from Punjab on contract basis also promote ‘direct seeding’ for paddy.

The success of direct paddy sowing will help to increase the total area under paddy cultivation in Punjab and rest of India.

The Agriculture department is also coming up with a 100-acre exhibition plot to make the farmers better informed about the new technique. By Avtar Gill(ANI)

Ludhiana farmers welcome Union Budget

Laltonkalan (Punjab), July 6 (ANI): Farmers of Laltonkalan village in Ludhiana district of Punjab have praised the Union Budget unveiled by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday, which focuses on increased spending on farmers and the poor.

The scheme for the below poverty line families that promises rice at rupees 3 per kilogram has been especially appreciated by the farmers.

“The scheme for the yellow card holders, (below poverty line people), as per which they would get 25 kilograms of rice at rupees 3 per kilogram, is good,” said Bhupinder Singh, a farmer.

To the relief of farmers, in view of delay in monsoon, the debt waiver scheme announced during 2008-09 budget would be extended till December 31, 2009. The Rs 71,000 crore scheme ended in June 2009.

The interest scheme for the short-term crop loans to the farmers for loans up to Rs 300,000 per farmer will be at the interest rate of 7 percent per annum.

This year the government shall pay an additional subvention of 1 percent as an incentive to those farmers who repay their short-term crop loan on schedule. The interest rate of these farmers will come down to 6 percent per annum.

“The farmers have got a budget that they had hoped for. Like the loans have been waived. Farmers were in distress; some even committed suicide, as the loans were increasing. Both small and big farmers will benefit from this budget,” said Amarinder Singh, a farmer.

The finance minister has also announced an allocation of Rs 39,100 crore for the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in 2009-10, an increase of 144%.

The government has also committed to providing a wage of Rs.100 a day to rural households in convergence with other schemes for rural areas. One hundred and fifteen pilot districts have been identified for these convergence schemes.

“The NREGA scheme will be helpful; the villages will get allocations for village development. The villages will progress,” said Kuldeep Singh, another farmer.

The government also hiked the target of agricultural credit for 2009-10 to Rs 3,25,000 crore. (ANI)

More water to be released from Bhakra Nangal

Ludhiana, July 2 (ANI): Authorities at the Bhakra Nangal dam have assured that they would release an extra 6,000 cusecs of water for irrigation to paddy farmers in Punjab and Haryana.

The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), that manages the dam located in Himachal Pradesh, said that 28,000 cusecs of water would be released from the dam.

“With the extra release of water the paddy crops will get relief because paddy needs standing water. Over 50 percent of the paddy crops were deprived of water but the situation will be comfortable for the farmers. I can say that with the extra release of water the farmers will get relief,” said M.K Gupta, member, BBMB.

“The situation would be reviewed on a day-to-day basis,” he added.

Farmers in Ludhiana said that as Bhakra Nangal dam will release more water their major problem would be solved. Secondly the rain god has finally been grateful to them and their problem has been resolved.

BBMB said the water level at the Gobind Sagar reservoir is expected to rise by around 3-3.5 feet everyday and touch 1,600 feet by August.

The BBMB had few days back decided to cut supply to 22,000 cusecs against the current supply of 28,000 cusecs due to the delayed monsoon and to maintain the water level in the Bhakra reservoir.

India’s monsoon, crucial for sowing of crops like paddy, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton and pulses has covered almost all of India as per data from the Meteorological Department (IMD).

Only parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana were yet to receive monsoon rains. (ANI)
