Stoner tipped to struggle on Ducati

Former world champion Casey Stoner will struggle to match the might of the Japanese MotoGP machines this season, according to countryman Chris Vermeulen.

Vermeulen, a winner in the elite series for Suzuki who has returned to world superbikes this year, says Stoner’s smaller Italian Ducati team got everything right in his title-winning year of 2007.

But he says while Stoner will be competitive, he is unlikely to be able to snare a second crown.

“I think it’s always going to be hard for him to win against the might of the big Japanese on a Ducati,” Vermeulen said.

“I think he’s one of the most talented riders out there. He doesn’t care, he just gets on and twists the throttle and he does it very well.

“I hope for him that he’s up there challenging but I realistically think that Yamaha and Honda are going to be harder for Ducati to beat this year.

“Ducati were really at an advantage when the 800cc came out even though Honda built the rules around it but the Japanese seem better at refining things and improving,” Vermeulen said.

“I’m not taking anything away from Ducati but there are much bigger manufacturers and the bike plays such a big role in MotoGP.

“I don’t know what Ducati have got in the pipeline or anything but that’s what I’m seeing from outside.

“I think Casey’s going to be in there with Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa but whether he can actually have a chance at that championship we’ll have to wait and see.

“I think the ’07 bike was very good – not better than any other bike – but he adapted, but there were three or four other Ducatis out there that he beat as well, so you can’t take anything away from him.

“But you have to make your own luck and your own opportunities and Ducati just got it perfect,” he said.

Cristiano close to tears as hopes of playing World Cup diminishes

Copenhagen (Denmark), Sep 7(ANI): Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who had broke millions of English hearts in the last World Cup and gave a wink after England striker Wayne Rooney was shown a red card for a tussle with Ricardo Carvalho, seemed close to tears at the end of a crucial game against Denmark in Copenhagen on Saturday.

FIFA World Player of the Year now fears that Portugal may not make it to the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, as they are reeling fourth in their group, which is lead by Denmark.

Currently Portugal are seven points behind Denmark and need to finish at least second to stand any hope of qualifying.

Meanwhile, Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz is hopeful of a luck change and believes that they can still make it to the World Cup.

“We have to raise our heads and keep believing. The game is not over and while it lasts we have to believe. Portugal played very well and were very focused. We progressed in the game, always in control, but, once again, the merit did not follow who played better,” The Sun quoted Queiroz, as saying.

“Only one team could have won. We were not good in finishing matters, with opportunities with an empty net where we could not score,” he added.

Portugal’s hopes now reels on their games against Hungary and Malta, and then hope for favours elsewhere in the group. (ANI)

London Mayor blasted for asking Brits to fast like Muslims during Ramadan

London, Sep 5 (ANI): The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has been criticized for asking Brits to fast for a day so they would know what it is like to be a Muslim.

Johnson said people should starve themselves from dawn until dusk during Ramadan and then end their fast during a visit to their local mosque.

Steve Uncles, South East chairman of the English Democrats, blasted Johnson’s comments.

He said: “The indigenous culture of this country is based on Christianity and Paganism. Of course, as an open and tolerant society, if people want to practise other religions then good luck to them. But the state should not be funding them because otherwise we will lose our culture.”

Johnson, 45, was visiting the East London Mosque and London Muslim Centre when he made these comments, the Daily Star reported.

“Whether it’s in theatre, comedy, sports, music or politics, Muslims are challenging the traditional stereotypes and showing that they are, and want to be, a part of the mainstream community.

“That’s why I urge people, particularly during Ramadan, to find out more about Islam, increase your understanding and learning, even fast for a day with your Muslim neighbour and break your fast at the local mosque,” Johnson said.

He added: “There are valuable lessons that people of all backgrounds can learn from Islam, such as the importance of community spirit, family ties, compassion and helping those less fortunate, all of which lie at the heart of the teachings of Ramadan.” (ANI)

Flower confident of Pietersen recovering before South African tour

London, Sep 3 (ANI): England cricket team director Andy Flower has expressed confidence that injured batsman Kevin Pietersen will make a full recovery and would return for the tour of South Africa.

Pietersen was forced out of the Ashes series following an Achilles injury, and has suffered a further setback after developing an infection in the scar tissue making him unavailable for the ODI series against Australia.

“He is still struggling a little with that wound in his Achilles. I spoke to him yesterday but I think we are confident in saying he will be back for South Africa,” The Independent quoted Flower, as saying.

Flower further said that he has advised Peitersen to use the time as a break from the busy schedule of an international cricket player.

“Sometimes you never know what is good or bad luck. It is enforced time away and he didn’t want it and we didn’t want it, but since it’s there and there is nothing anyone can do about it, I think he has got to make the most of it,” Flower said.

“I think that is what he is doing. He is spending time with his family and his wife and getting a break from the international game,” he added.

Flower also said that he was unsure about all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s career, who had underwent a knee surgery after the Ashes series.

“If he can come back and play one-day international and Twenty20 cricket for us and bat at six or seven and bowl like he can bowl, that will make us a force to be reckoned with in one-day cricket,” Flower said.

“Whether he will or not I don’t know, I just hope he does,” he added. (ANI)

On the concluding day of the festival, the idols are carried in grand processions and immersed in rivers or seas.

Lord Ganesha, is one of the most revered Gods of Hindus, and is worshipped at the beginning of every auspicious occasion.

Ganesha, as the God of knowledge is described as “Vinayaka”and as remover of obstacles he is called “Vighanharta”. He is worshipped at the beginning of every auspicious occasion for blessings of luck and success.

The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being.

He is revered as the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles besides being worshipped as the God of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth.

Legend has it once Goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Lord Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy’s head in rage.

Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops.

Hence, his name ‘Ganapati’. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture. By Sarda Lahangir / Jaipal Sharma (ANI)

Oz rules force foreign students to become economic slaves

Sydney, July 15 (ANI): Businesses across Australia are exploiting thousands of international students by making them work free or even to pay to get work, as the current immigration and education laws in the country require students to gain 900 hours’ of work experience.

Termed by experts as economic slavery, the vast pool of unpaid labour was created in 2005 when vocational students were required to work even if they were not paid.

Overseas students remained bound to the system as completion of such courses became a near-guaranteed pathway to permanent residency, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Since then, the number of foreign students enrolled in the vocational training sector has leapt from 65,120 to 173,432 last year – about half of all our overseas students.

One university-educated overseas student said that she spent 22,000 dollars and two years doing a hairdressing course she will never use, to secure her residency.

Many colleges charge students thousands of dollars in “placement fees” only to advertise their supply of free labour to local business. A black market has sprung up in fraudulent letters of completion.

“You’ve got the agents and the proprietors realising there is a flood of free labour, but of course the demand for placements outstrips the supply – so even if they wanted to take all that free labour, they can’t use it all,” said immigration agent, Karl Konrad.

A trade in fraudulent documents had evolved with employers and agents selling students verification that they had completed their 900 hours. They charge between 15,000-20,000 dollars for such paperwork.

“They are slaves. They work for free from 11 o’clock to 11 o’clock – no breaks, no nothing. They have to pay the owner for the paperwork. They want to stay here. They will do anything. They work with no workers’ compensation, no insurance. If they are injured at work, bad luck,” one agent said.

Konrad said many students had taken out loans or mortgages at home to pay the fees.

“If you have taken a loan in Indian dollars of 20,000 dollars to study here, that is going to take you nearly 20 years to pay off in India. Parents can be kicked out of their homes,” he said. (ANI)

Tweed ‘charmed model into bed’ just weeks after burying Goody

London, July 12 (ANI): Jack Tweed charmed a glamour model into bed, apparently just weeks after burying his wife Jade Goody.

And he went on to try his luck with the girl’s Page 3 flatmate.

Lisa O’Connor revealed how Tweed, kept sending her text messages, such as “U WANT RUMP?” and “R U GOING 2 DO IT?” while pursuing her for weeks.

“I didn’t want to sleep with him so soon and told him, but he was really persistent. One thing led to another and he started pulling my clothes off. We got caught up in the heat of the moment and he pushed me onto the bed,” News of the World quoted Lisa as saying.

“For 25 minutes as we had sex Jade didn’t seem to be much in Jack’s thoughts. He never mentioned her ever. He only had one thing on his mind,” she added.

The 21-year-old said just minutes after she gave in, the widower pinched her best friend’s Stevie-Louise Ritchie’s bottom while she was not looking.

Lisa said: “Stevie was stunned. And when I heard about it later I was livid and told him so by message.”

Lisa, who has decided never to go out with Tweed again, added: “That was it. I thought he was a total sleazebag. I regretted ever laying eyes on him. But we all make mistakes.”

Tweed, who lost Goody to cervical cancer in March, said in a recent interview that he was “not interested” in looking for a relationship.e told OK! magazine: “Jade said she’d want me to find someone, but it’s not something that’s crossed my mind. I don’t want a relationship, I haven’t thought about it.”

He joked: “You can sort manly needs out on your own.” (ANI)

Mayawati Government gives permission to file chargesheet against Varun

New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh Government on Friday has given permission to file chargesheet against BJP MP Varun Gandhi for his ‘hate speech’ in Pilibhit.

The BJP MP is currently out on bail.

With reports of Mayawati Government considering the possibility of setting up a fast track court to expedite the trial, the BJP MP would need all his luck to get out of the problem this time.

For records, On June 25, a letter seeking permission to prosecute Varun under Section 153A of the IPC in cases pending against him in the CJM court was dispatched by Pilibhit administration to state home department (153A deals with acts designed to spread enmity between two sections of society).

UP police on March 17 had registered an FIR against BJP’s Varun Gandhi in Pilibhit under section 153A for allegedly making inflammatory remarks with communal overtones.

Earlier, a petition was filed today in the Allahabad High Court questioning the election of Varun Gandhi to the Lok Sabha form the Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.

V M Singh, the Congress candidate who is the maternal uncle of Varun Gandhi, the loser in the recently concluded general election, has filed this petition.

Varun Gandhi had gained the votes by spreading hatred about a particular community by making inflammatory speeches, said Singh’s advocate U N Sharma.

Singh alleged that Varun’s mode of campaigning amounted corrupt practice as per section 123(3) of the Representation of Peoples Act.

Varun made his electoral debut from Pilibhit, which was earlier, represented by his mother Maneka Gandhi. Varun was arrested under National Security Act for allegedly making hate speeches in an election rally in Pilibhit. (ANI)

Megan Fox still has a lot of growing to do, says ‘Transformers’ director

Washington, July 03(ANI): ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ director Michael Bay has slammed Megan Fox, calling her “ridiculous” for speaking against the movie.

Fox told Entertainment Weekly: “I mean, I can’t s**t on this movie because it did give me a career and open all these doors for me. But I don’t want to blow smoke up people’s a**. People are well aware that this is not a movie about acting.”

However, the helmer begs to disagree and instead feels that Fox still “has growing to do”.

“Well, that’s Megan Fox for you. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

Bay is also not ready to keep secret the fact that he has helped many other stars like Fox in Hollywood turn big through his films.

He added: “Nic Cage wasn’t a big actor when I cast him, nor was Ben Affleck before I put him in Armageddon. Shia LaBeouf wasn’t a big movie star before he did Transformers – and then he exploded. Not to mention Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, from Bad Boys.

“Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in Transformers. I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.” (ANI)
