Tripura has a bumper pineapple crop

Nandan Nagar (Tripura), June 11 (ANI): Tripura has abundant crop of pineapples following two consecutive years of low production.

Both the pineapple lovers and vendors are a delighted lot, as the fruit markets are flooded with pineapples this season.

The growers are also pleased with their crop despite the small size of the fruit due to insufficient rainfall.

“This time the production of pineapple is good, but it would have been better if it rained two-three months back as that would have made the size of the fruit a little bigger. But still it is a good harvest,” said Mohammed Rahim, a fruit vendor.

“Since the production is more and the price is also good, we are making good profit. Moreover, we are also making profit as the government has helped us in staggering and now we can sell our products in the off-season,” said Babul Dey, Pineapple orchard owner.

The yield this year is around 1, 17,531 Metric tonnes as compared to 1, 10,487 531 Metric tonnes last year. (ANI)

Practising on onions makes tattoo art perfect

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) Before the advent of artificial skin pads, tattoo artists had to rely on white onions, volunteers and their own skin to hone their skill – an art that can only be perfected with practice.

Practising how to make a tattoo is very important because it gives an idea of the depth of the needle – how much it should penetrate the skin – for comfortable hand movement and to cause the least pain to the client.

Mumbai-based tattoo artist Vishwas Dorwekar, who has been in the business for 30 years, told IANS that he used to practise on white onion to get his hand movement right.

‘We are traditional tattoo artists and my father taught me this art on white onions. I practised a lot on them because the layering is just like skin. So working on them helps achieve the correct hand balance,’ Dorwekar said.

‘The best way to judge yourself on a white onion is to see imprints of work on its layers. How deep did u touch it? Initially it is 6-7 layer deep, but the day you master the art, the imprint will come down to 1-2 layers,’ he added.

Delhi-based tattoo artist Mike Cowasji, who has been tattooing since 1995, said he was fortunate enough to have volunteers to practise.

‘At that time, tattooing just started in India and a lot of people wanted to get one. So, I used to get a lot volunteers who wanted a tattoo done. That is how I mastered the art,’ Cowasji explained.

‘But at the same time, working directly on someone’s body added huge responsibilities. I had to be perfect. I had to make sure that the design comes out the way the volunteer wanted. After all, they are doing something that will stick with them for ever,’ he added.

One artist said he even practised on his own skin to get it right.

‘Today you get artificial rubber skin, but those hit the market just two to three years back. They were popular in the West and available there. One could have got it from there, but it was expensive,’ said Lokesh Verma of Devilz tattoo parlour in Vasant Kunj, who has been in the business for six years.

‘So I started practising on my own skin. That is how I learnt,’ he added.

Artificial skin pads are available in the Indian market starting at Rs.2,000. Cowasji, who runs a school for teaching the art of tattooing in C.R. Park, explained how rubber skin works.

‘I have mannequins in my school. We use the rubber skin pads and strap them to any body part. The point is to get used to the feel of drawing around the natural curves of the human body,’ he said.

Verma suggests one should never practise on a flat surface to make sure that the process is realistic to get the maximum benefit.

Dorwekar summed up, saying: ‘Tattoo-making is an endless process. The more one practises, the better one gets.’

‘Tattoo-making is a combination of art and science, practising which will give you knowledge,’ he said.

No merger with Congress in future: Chiranjeevi

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Telugu cine star and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) President Chiranjeevi on Saturday ruled out any merger with the Congress party in the future.

“The Congress has asked PRP to withdraw from Rajya Sabha polls,” said Chiranjeevi after his meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath.

“The PRP has allied with Congress only for Rajya Sabha polls,” he added

The meeting gained significance after Congress MP and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajshekhar Reddy’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy defied the party orders and decided to go ahead with his planned ‘Odarpu Yatra,’ which caused a lot of violence in the Telangana region.

The Praja Rajyam Party, which has 18 MLAs in the 295-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, is keen on contesting the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The actor-turned politician was asked by the Congress High Command to come here for discussions to reach an understanding on the biennial Rajya Sabha polls, after he announced that his party would contest the election. (ANI)

EXCLUSIVE – Players put the knife in, says disappointed Els

Ernie Els has hit out at players who criticised his redesign of Wentworth’s West Course this week, saying they had “put the knife” into him.

Wentworth owner Richard Caring, who spent 6.5 million pounds ($9.34 million) on the changes, had been “kicked in the teeth” by the players, Els told Reuters in an exclusive interview .

“If they had criticisms they could’ve handled it differently. That’s the sad part of the whole week, a lot of the guys I’ve known for a very long time came out and basically put the knife in and I don’t really appreciate that,” Els said on Sunday.

The redesign left few of the 18 holes untouched and several players at the PGA Championship complained in the media about the changes, especially the new moat and elevated green at the 18th.

“There is going to be criticism with any new design but I really wasn’t expecting the backlash I got,” Els said. “I don’t think anybody deserved it.

“If the people who made all those comments, especially the players, look back at what they said and what they achieved this week, it was all negative,” said Els after finishing well down the field following a closing 72 for 287, three over par.

“The tour doesn’t need it, the club doesn’t need it, the owner who has put all this money in doesn’t need it, I don’t need it.”

Caring acknowledged mistakes had been made with the redesign of the famous West Course and told reporters on Friday that he would take the blame.

“It’s unfortunate he had to come out (and say that),” said Els. “He is the guy who spent 6.5 million pounds on the changes.

“Who on earth is going to spend that money to enhance a golf course on television and make the sponsor happy, make the players happy and then the players kick him in the teeth because they don’t like a couple of holes?

CRITICAL COMMENTS

“For all this money we are playing for (a $5.63-million prize fund) we could be playing down the road…not come in here like a bunch of spoiled golfers,” said the world number seven.

“This guy is enhancing the flagship event, the whole tour, and players come in and criticise that. That’s amazing — how must he feel?”

Els said he could not understand why some players had not spoken to him directly.

“Some players who made critical comments came to me, some players haven’t come to me — and I don’t understand that.”

The 40-year-old South African added: “Obviously the 18th didn’t quite come out the way we wanted…but we didn’t need a bunch of know-all people to criticise everything — that is the disappointing part.

“These greens were only laid in November and December and we are now holding the biggest tournament on tour on these greens. I think it’s a hell of a feat by the whole team.”

Els said he would make some changes for the 2011 PGA Championship, particularly the eighth and 18th holes.

“Definitely 18. I can show you the plans I drew for it at the get-go,” said Els. “I’d also like to make changes on eight, I don’t like the heather on the mounds there.

“I’d even like to change the eighth green because that’s another one I wanted lower.

“But for the rest I think it’s unbelievable. The green superintendent Chris Kennedy has really got these bunkers almost the way we want them,” added the triple major winner.

Meet the Oz woman who is obsessed with letter Y!

Melbourne, May 20 (ANI): An Australian woman, who loves the letter Y, has made sure that each of her children had names containing the alphabet.

Janette Wingrave, 32, from Ocean Grove, Victoria, who is the only one in the family without a y in her name, said she just liked the name Tayla, and at first there was nothing more to it than that.

“Mitchyl was where it started. There were so many common ones (spellings) about, and I wanted something a bit different,” the Courier Mail quoted her as saying.

“Something to make the kids stand out a bit more,” she explained.

Then came Harrisyn, “the only one that people have difficulties with”. He got a triple dose of the ys – his second name’s Bayley.

Baby Samuyl got the double-whammy second name Jay. And if he had been a girl, it was going to be Shaynae or Lilly.

“I found I was having a boy, and it was, oh! I had to start playing around again,” she said.

She wanted to spell the name without the u, to make it even more of a y name, but said her husband put his foot down.

“When the kids first entered school, a few of the teachers asked how (the names) were spelt, but most people are used to it,” her husband, Garry, 30, said.

“It’s more a problem with the surname. A lot of people put a y in it, when it’s an I,” he revealed. (ANI)

I don’t know if Mourinho is the right man to coach Real: Benitez

London, May 20 (ANI): Taking a dig at old rival Jose Mourinho, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has claimed he does not know if Inter Milan coach is the right man for Real Madrid.

Mourinho looks certain to replace Manuel Pellegrini as coach of Real Madrid after leading Inter Milan into Saturday’s Champions League final.

The Liverpool boss thinks Real Madrid could be committing a blunder if they think the Portuguese coach is the man to turn them into European kings again, The Sun reports.

“I know Mourinho has dreamed a lot of coaching Real Madrid, but I do not know if he is the right person to train Madrid,” The Sun quoted Benitez, as saying.

“Pellegrini has done a great job and deserves great respect because he’s still coach and it’s not pleasant to hear talk about who’s going to replace you,” he said.

Mourinho has admitted: “My only options are Madrid or Inter. To get me to leave this club after two years of incredible work, only Real Madrid could achieve that.

“If I go, I will move with a clear conscience having changed the club.” (ANI)

Clarke defends Oz team’s achievement inspite of loss to England

Sydney, May 20 (ANI): Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke, who was disappointed to lose in the final against England, has said the Australian team has made great strides in the Caribbean despite failing to lift the trophy.

“It was a wonderful achievement from the Australian Twenty20 team (to make the final),” he said.

“I thought we played fantastic cricket through the whole tournament, very exciting cricket,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke, as saying.

“I think the semi-final against Pakistan was one of the greatest games of all our careers and one we’ll remember forever,” he said.

Clarke was doubtful about the impact that the result might have on next summer’s Ashes series.

“Obviously disappointed to lose the final but I think we’ve shown in this form of the game that we continue to improve,” he said.

“It hurts losing to England in any form of the game but there’s a lot of guys in both teams that won’t take part in the Ashes series,” Clarke added. (ANI)

Courtney Love claims she had a lesbian fling with Kate Moss

London, May 20 (ANI): Rocker Courtney Love has sensationally claimed that she bedded supermodel Kate Moss in Milan, Italy.

The widow of Nirvana star Kurt Cobain had dropped hints weeks ago about a tryst with a female pin-up, who she claimed chased her round a room, leading to a sex session.

And in a startling new magazine interview, the 45-year-old singer has now claimed: “It was Kate Moss. She doesn”t care.”

Love has also alleged that many of her female friends in London had slept with Kate.

“It”s a great story for the grandchildren, so yeah. Kate wasn”t doing a lot of drugs. It was just a thing that happened in Milan in the Nineties,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“It happened and it was fun and whatever. And she talks about it and so I hope she doesn”t get mad that I outed her about it.

“I feel like such a kiss and tell. Kate”s great, though! Kate”s a good friend of mine. I almost bought her house in St John”s Wood, London,” she added. (ANI)

Loneliness ‘can cause weight gain’

Washington, May 20 (ANI): The world may have become a global village because of Internet and mobile phones, but many still deal with loneliness and emotional distress that may lead to overeating and serious weight gain.

Mary Jo Rapini, a psychotherapist with The Methodist Weight Management Center in Houston says that people look for comfort food when they feel lonely or depressed.

Some will begin to gain a lot of weight, begin to feel even more self conscious about their appearance, and fall into a deeper depression.

Rapini adds that it is important to express yourself, be it through talking to someone, by journaling, drawing self-portraits of how you are feeling or writing poetry or short stories about your situation. (ANI)

Push on for outback police museum

Planning has started for a police museum in outback Queensland.

The Diamantina Shire Council wants to establish a museum at Birdsville’s century-old police station and courthouse.

Council spokesman Brian Mooney says there are remarkable stories about the history of early policing in remote Queensland.

“There were some amazing hunts that went on for people that were shooting cattle as the original graziers moved in,” he said.

“A lot of the police sergeants in the area where sergeants in the English Army and they came out to these areas from Great Britain. The contrast no doubt of what they experienced here and over there would have been amazing.”

Doc develops ‘skin’ helmet that protects brain

London, May 15 (ANI): A type of helmet that, in the event of an accident, can reduce the damaging effect of head rotation that often leads to brain injury has been developed by a British doctor.

Dr Ken Phillips decided to design a helmet that replicated the head’s natural defenses. The skin’s ability to slip slightly over the skull normally moderates the sudden rotation of the head that typically leads to severe brain injuries even when the skull is protected from impact, reports The Times.

In Phillips’s design, an artificial membrane to the exterior of a conventional helmet is added to mimic the slipping of human skin.

“My son started the whole thing off,” said Phillips. “He told me that rotation was causing a lot of injuries that helmets didn’t protect against — and what was I going to do about it? As a doctor, I knew about head injuries but I had a bit of learning to do about helmet engineering.”

And after 15 years, the first range to employ the new Phillips Head Protection System (PHPS) has come to market — Lazer Superskin (lazerhelmets.com) helmets.

They are available at around 200 pounds. (ANI)

Westlife were “lazy” on many of their albums

London, May 14 (ANI): Irish pop group Westlife has revealed that they regret recording so many cover songs during their pop career, as they had been “lazy” on many of their albums.

The boyband is famous for re-recording tracks by other artists, most famously taking on Barry Manilow’s ‘Mandy’, Billy Joel’s ‘Uptown Girl’ and a cover of Phil Collins’ ‘Against All Odds’, a duet with Mariah Carey.

And despite being the only act in U.K. history to see all of their first seven singles reach the number one spot in the British charts, singer Nicky Byrne admits the band has made some “mistakes” along the way.

“We’ve certainly made a lot of mistakes. We’ve recorded songs that we should never have recorded. We look back on some of them and think, ‘Oh God, that was terrible’,” the Daily Express quoted him as telling the Sun.

“Sitting in rooms and nodding our heads and doing everything that was asked of us was what we did for years and years.

“But we are happy to speak now, to say, ‘I think we should do this.’ We’ve become men over the last few years,” he stated.

Bandmate Shane Filan added: “You get to a stage when you get a bit lazy. But then we’ll go back into the studio and realise the last record was a bit lazy and do better on the next one.” (ANI)

Song explaining how to pronounce Eyjafjallajvkull a YouTube hit

London, May 13 (ANI): A song explaining the pronunciation of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajvkull is fast becoming a rage on YouTube.

The volcano made headlines after it erupted last month leaving passengers stranded across European airports.

And now Icelandic singer Eliza Newman is helping people to pronounce its name.

Her video has racked up more than 200,000 hits on YouTube.

Playing the ukulele, Newman croons:

Eyjafjallajokull is a long, long name

For such a small glacier, with such notorious fame

And Eyjafjallajokull has caused quite a stir

And no-one can fly anywhere except the birds

Please stop it Eyjafjallajokull

“The volcano has caused a lot of problems around the world, not least with people who haven””t been able to say it,” the Sun quoted Newman, as saying.

She added: “Anything I can do to help people get their tongue round the word is fantastic. Little songs and rhymes always help.” (ANI)
