Republican National Committee chief of staff resigns amid sex-club flap

New York. Apr 6 (ANI): Republican National Committee’s (RNC) chief of staff Ken McKay stepped down amid scrutiny over members’ spending practices at a strip club.

McKay’s resignation came just hours after a co-chairman of the RNC’s top fundraising board announced he was exiting the organization.

Fingers have been raised against the committee since a report last week that the RNC paid 2,000 dollars in entertainment at a Los Angeles-area strip club.

RNC spokesman Doug Heye refused to say whether or not McKay had been asked to step down.

“The chairman felt it was critical to make a move swiftly to ensure that no improper expenses happen in the future,” the New York Post quoted him as telling The National Journal.

Chairman Michael Steele rejected calls for his own resignation Monday, telling ABC News that his political style was simply “a little bit more streetwise” than some would prefer.

According to The Politico, Mike Leavitt will become the new RNC chief of staff, starting immediately.

The chairwoman of the RNC’s “Young Eagles” program, which organized the strip club outing, lost her job last week. (ANI)

Mexico-California border towns shaken after quake

Dozens of aftershocks following a big earthquake rattled the Mexico-Californian border area on Monday as families too scared to return to damaged homes milled around in streets and parks.

Two people died and more than 200 were injured when a 7.2 magnitude quake rocked the area near the border city of Mexicali on Sunday. Baja California Gov. Jose Osuna said the victims were crushed by a collapsed house and a falling wall.

The tremor, felt as far north as Los Angeles, cracked main roads, toppled electricity posts and knocked down an empty multistorey car park under construction in Mexicali, a prosperous industrial city and busy border crossing.

A pastor in the farming town of Guadalupe Victoria near the quake’s epicenter said his church remained standing but cracked down the middle two hours after he finished giving mass.

He and about 40 members of his congregation slept in a soccer field and were shaken by nearly 100 aftershocks.

“We spent the night praying here in the park. There have been constant tremors and no one wants to go back home,” said pastor Fernando Lopez.

Broken gas pipes sparked fires on Sunday, and darkened streets in Mexicali caused car accidents, but no major buildings collapsed. Power was mostly reestablished on Monday, but some hospitals lay patients out on beds in parking lots due to worries over cracked walls.

Osuna said 3,500 people would be moved to shelters and noted that the full extent of damage in towns south of Mexicali like Vicente Guerrero was not yet known.

Smaller tremors continued to shake buildings, adding to fears of another big quake.

“With the number of aftershocks we’ve had, the likelihood of another 6 or 7 magnitude earthquake is very real,” Erik Pounders, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, said.

“There might be a few structures that just barely made it through and the second one could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

LONG LINES FOR GAS

A highway connecting Mexicali with the nearby border city of Tijuana on the Pacific coast was ruptured by a crevice at least a meter (3 feet) deep, according to a Reuters witness.

A liquefied natural gas import terminal south of Tijuana was not damaged however, operator Sempra Energy said.

President Felipe Calderon will visit Mexicali, home to more than a million people and a center for food processing and assembly plants, later on Monday.

Vacationers returning from Easter holidays were stuck in traffic jams and motorists reported difficulty finding fuel, even though state oil company Pemex said supply was fine.

Sunday’s quake was centered in a lightly populated area but rattled nerves in the United States and across Latin America which has been shaken by devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile this year.

Over the border in the U.S. town of Calexico, some downtown blocks were closed off as Border Patrol agents helped police secure the area against looters. Stores had leaning awnings, smashed windows and broken vases in window displays.

“It was violent, like the earth was mad … My home was shaking very violently, pictures coming off the walls, then the TVs came down,” said local firefighter Channing Dawson.

Earthquakes of 7.0 can do serious damage to urban areas.

Some parts of San Diego reported minor structural damage and callers to local radio said the rolling tremor made it hard to keep cars on the road. In Los Angeles, buildings swayed.

Southern California with its many geological faults is prone to frequent quakes and many residents fear the next big one. The last to cause major damage was the 6.7 magnitude Northridge quake in 1994 that left 57 dead and 9,000 injured.

L.A. refineries say no impact from earthquake

HOUSTON, April 5 (Reuters) – Two Los Angeles-area refineries said their operations were unaffected by a powerful Mexican earthquake felt across southern California on Sunday.

Tesoro Corp (TSO.N) and Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) said operations at their refineries in Wilmington, California, were not impacted by the quake, which was centered in Baja California about 40 miles south of San Luis, Arizona.

Representatives of other refineries in Los Angeles were unavailable to comment on Sunday night.

BP Plc (BP.L) reported to California pollution regulators a spill of about 1 barrel of “waste water oily sludge” when “a sewer manway lifted during the earthquake causing the product to spill onto concrete.”

BP was cleaning up the spill, which was on refinery property, according to the notice filed with the California Emergency Management Agency. One barrel is equal to 42 gallons.

One dead, many trapped in 7.2-magnitude Mexico quake

London, Apr 5 (ANI): An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter Scale hit Mexico’s Baja California area resulting in the death of one person.

The quake, in Baja California, was also one of the strongest to hit Southern California in decades, shaking buildings from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

The quake struck at 3:40 p.m. (23.40 UK time) 16 miles south southwest of Guadalupe Victoria at a depth of 20 miles, according to the US Geological Survey.

Three aftershocks followed within the hour, SKY News reports.

USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said: “Most of Southern California felt this earthquake.”

Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo said a man was killed when his home collapsed just outside of Mexicali, and that there were reports of more people trapped in homes in the area.

Rescue teams with dogs and digging equipment were rushing to the city from nearby Tijuana.

There was substantial damage on the other side of the border in Calexico, California.

Fire Chief Peter Mercado told KABC-TV of Los Angeles that there was structural damage and broken windows in an older section of town, as well as leaking gas lines and damage to the water system, but that no one was hurt. (ANI)

Body double does most of Alec Baldwin’s role in 30 Rock

Washington, September 12 (ANI): Actor Alec Baldwin has a body double for his role in hit TV Show 30 Rock, as he can’t spare enough time to film it himself, it has emerged.

The star apparently works just three days a week, as he needs to travel back to Los Angeles to spend time with his daughter Ireland.

According to sources it has led to the comedy show creator and star, Tina Fey, organizing rehearsals and scenes around Baldwin’s absence, by using a stand-in.

“Tina saves Alec’s speaking lines for his arrival on set, but everything else is shot with a stand-in,” Fox News quoted an on-set source as saying.

Most shots featuring Baldwin’s character are shot from behind or sideways.

The insider said: “Those [body double takes] make it into the final cut of the show. There are many back shots and side shots that don’t show Alec’s face, because it is his stand-in on Alec’s days off.

“The goal is to have everything ready to shoot Alec when he’s there, with as little stress as possible.

“He does not have the desire to be tied to a set six or seven days a week, and Tina was willing to work it so that he could get everything he wanted. Alec can pretty much do anything he wants at ’30 Rock’.”

Baldwin was spotted at the U.S. Open this week watching tennis. (ANI)

A housekeeper informed the police after noticing the missing portraits, each measuring 40 inches square, on September 3.

Detective Sommer said: “This was a very clean crime. (The home) wasn’t ransacked.”

Cities trap more CO2 than rain forests

Washington, September 9 (ANI): A surprising new study has found that cities trap more carbon dioxide (CO2) than rain forests.

According to a report in National Geographic News, compared with tropical rain forests, cities store more carbon, acre for acre, in their trees, buildings, and dirt.

“Everyone thinks about the tropical forests, but I don’t think people consider cities as a way to store carbon,” said study leader Galina Churkina of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research in Germany.

“Although a lot of studies have focused on carbon in forests, grasslands, and other natural ecosystems, looking at cities-which now house half of the world’s population-is relatively new,” Churkina said.

Intentionally storing carbon in cities could be one approach to counter global warming, she added.

Churkina and colleagues pulled together previous evidence looking at various stores of organic carbon, which comes from living things, as well as from such as plants and animals, wood, dirt, and even garbage.

Cities, including both dense metropolises and sprawling suburbs, store about a tenth of all the carbon in U.S. ecosystems, the study estimated.

In total, U.S. cities contain about 20 billion tons of organic carbon, mostly in dirt, according to the new study.

Some of this carbon-rich topsoil is in parks and under lawns, but it’s also sealed underneath buildings and roads-a remnant of grasslands or forests that were there before development.

Of all this urban carbon, about three billion tons are locked up in human-made materials-two-thirds of it in garbage dumps, and the rest in building materials such as wood.

Many cities have already launched ambitious plans for turning gray to green, such as Los Angeles’ Million Trees LA project, which aims to plant a million trees in the Californian city over several years.

Trees take up CO2 and turn it into carbon in their trunks, branches, and leaves, so planting more trees helps counter some of the excess CO2 in the air.

Likewise trees also cool cities and reduce the need for air-conditioning, according to urban forest expert David Nowak of the U.S. Forest Service in Syracuse, New York.

By planting trees around buildings, he added, “you avoid about four times more CO2 emissions than the trees sequester.”

Study leader Churkina added, “people could (also) try to store more carbon in gardens by smart management of the land. The carbon storage in lawns is quite amazing.” (ANI)

George Clooney’s ex Sara Larson turns private yoga instructor

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Former Las Vegas cocktail waitress Sara Larson, who dated actor George Clooney in 2007, has turned into a private yoga instructor in Los Angeles.

There had been rumours earlier this year of Larson having her own Vegas-based reality show in the works, but it seems she has opted for a more spiritually satisfying lifestyle.

“I do yoga pretty much every day. I am a certified yoga instructor, so I actually teach yoga,” Fox News quoted Larson as saying at the recent Reality Cares’ Sizzles Charity Benefit in Los Angeles.

She also revealed that “all of a sudden” guys have started calling out of nowhere for private classes, and she’s now in talks to design her own yoga-inspired clothing line.

Larson, who has found herself a new love, says she doesn’t give a hoot about her ex’s romantic relations.

“Dating has its challenges and either two people connect or they don’t,” she said.

“There’s a lot of other factors that are involved as to whether it will be a long-term relationship or not, but everything for me right now is new.

“I’m not in touch with George at all. I don’t have any regrets,” she added. (ANI)

Maggie Gyllenhaal feels sorry for brother Jake’s constant media attention

Washington, Sept 7 (ANI): Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal admits that she feels sorry for her brother, actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who is constantly followed by paparazzi.

The ‘Dark Knight’ actress says that Jake’s celebrity lifestyle has changed him as a person.

“Of course, everybody does change as they grow up, but I think it’s really hard for anybody who has to figure out a way to manage it,” Contactmusic quoted her as having told Britain’s Marie Claire magazine.

“Like in Los Angeles, I don’t always know where to avoid going – sometimes you just walk right into a paparazzi nest.

“I get so angry, really upset. They chase him in their car and it’s just different for him. More than anything I feel sorry for him that he has to deal with that,” she added. (ANI)

MJ’s brother’s fury over ‘secret’ burial filming

London, September 6 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s brother Randy has slammed the “surreptitious” filming of the burial of the late star in Los Angeles.

The former ‘Jackson 5′ singer reacted after a camera kept filming the private ceremony at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park on a hovering helicopter despite the area being a no-fly zone.

“I was dismayed last night and again today at the coverage I saw on television of our ceremony for Michael,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

“We had asked the media to respect the privacy and the sanctity of this event; to give us one moment of privacy to mourn as a family out of the public spotlight.

“Unfortunately, despite a no-fly zone around Forest Lawn, many media organisations decided to ignore our wishes.

“I therefore ask today that media organisations airing helicopter footage of the ceremony we held for my brother immediately pull that footage from their air and refrain from airing it in the future,” he added.

The King of Pop was finally laid to rest after he died of a lethal cocktail of prescription drugs on June 25.

The Los Angeles coroner ruled Jackson’s death as homicide. (ANI)
