60 percent California school students fail English test

Los Angeles, May 29 (IANS) Nearly 60 percent students in California’s high schools are unable to pass English proficiency test despite over six years of US education.

The flaws in English language programmes have put the academic future of hundreds of thousands of children in jeopardy, shattering their college dreams and imperilling the state’s economic future, said a study based on the survey of 40 schools.

Majority of long-term English learners are US citizens who prefer English and are bilingual. But they fail to achieve the proficiency level needed for educational success and disproportionately drop out of high school.

According to Californians Together, a coalition of 22 parent, professional and civil rights organisations, which conducted the study, the offspring of immigrants make up 55 percent of Los Angeles County’s child population.

‘The situation is alarming and urgent,’ said Laurie Olsen, the study’s author. ‘These kids are a large part of our future. But if we don’t have programs that powerfully bring them into English, we’re going to end up increasingly with a state of kids who are undereducated.’

California schools educate 1.6 million English learners, a quarter of all students; they make up the largest concentration of English learners in the nation. But most schools are failing to adequately monitor their progress, train teachers or develop appropriate curriculum, Los Angeles Times reported citing the study.

Many students are not given any special language services, as required by law, and are forced to ‘sink or swim’ in mainstream classes, which widespread research has found produce the worst outcomes, Olsen said.

In addition, the state’s English learners – 85 percent of whom speak Spanish – are often raised in linguistically isolated communities and many suffer from educational interruptions as their families move between countries.

‘One of the heartbreaks is that most kids say they want to go to college and have high dreams for themselves,’ Olsen said. ‘They and their parents don’t realize they’re really in academic jeopardy’.

“I know you dont want me to not succeed and I know you”re wiser than anyone I know, but I know you need me and I need you. I miss you Bean.”

Roman Polanski breaks his silence on American extradition demands

London, May 3 (ANI): Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski has spoken about extradition demands by the US over a 33-year-old under-age sex case.

The 76-year-old Oscar winner said that America”s main purpose was to serve him “on a platter to the media.”

Polanski is under house arrest in his Swiss alpine chalet. He laid out his case against extradition on an online magazine run by one of his staunchest supporters, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, reports The Daily Express.

“I have had my share of dramas and joys as we all have, and I am not going to try to ask you to pity my lot in life,” he wrote. “I ask only to be treated fairly like anyone else,” Polanski said.

He has claimed that the case charged against him is unjustified and full with problems. Each argument begins with the phrase: “I can remain silent no longer.”

Polanski also complains that Los Angeles County district attorney Steve Cooley, “who is handling this case and has requested the extradition, is himself campaigning for election and needs media publicity!”

Mr Cooley is running for the California attorney general post.

Sandi Gibbons, District attorney”s spokeswoman said the office “will withhold comment until the Swiss make a decision on his fugitive status.”

Swiss government is deciding whether to extradite Polanski to Los Angeles for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl or not.

Polanski was arrested seven months ago when he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival. (ANI)

Polanski”s sex victim cannot call for case”s dismissal

London, April 17 (ANI): Roman Polanski”s illegal sex victim Samantha Geimer has no right to call for the three-decade-old case against the Oscar-winning filmmaker to be dismissed, US prosecutors told a court.

Los Angeles County prosecutors told the California Second District Court of Appeal that a recent constitutional revision did not give victims the right to determine the outcome of criminal cases, reports The Daily Express.

In a filing, they also called upon the appeals court to reject requests by Geimer to have the case transferred to another county and unseal recent testimony by a former prosecutor.

Prosecutors believe granting her request for dismissal would “fundamentally alter the way in which crimes are prosecuted”.

The filing says that if victims were parties to criminal cases, cases could be dropped either through intimidation, coercion or public pressure.

Geimer asked the appeals court to dismiss the case and make the other rulings in March.

She has repeatedly tried to have the case dismissed, saying renewed interest in the case and its media coverage is quite a harrowing experience for her.

Polanski, 76, is accused of having had illegal intercourse with Geimer, when she was 13, in 1977.

The Rosemary”s Baby director pleaded guilty to the charge but fled the US on the eve of his sentencing.

He is currently under house arrest in his chalet in the Swiss luxury resort of Gstaad. (ANI)

Ex-worker sues Tyra Banks over outstanding wages

London, Sept 4 (ANI): A former employee of Tyra Banks has sued her claiming she has held back his wages worth thousands of dollars.

Richard Thomas filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court charging the supermodel-turned-TV presenter of not paying him 3, 638 pounds, reports the Daily Star.

According to TMZ.com, Thomas says he is due money for “services rendered as assistant and advisor” to the star.

Although the legal papers insist that Thomas must himself ask Banks for the outstanding amount before filing the case, he says:

“I have not been able to catch (Tyra) while she is in.” (ANI)

Homicide officially listed on MJ’s death certificate

London, September 2 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s death certificate has been reissued, officially stating the star’s death as homicide.

The new document now apparently says the King of Pop died of “acute intoxication” caused by powerful anaesthetic Propofol.

The singer’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, who is at the centre of a manslaughter probe, previously confessed giving the drug to the insomniac star to help him sleep.

The story comes after the Los Angeles County Coroner concluded Propofol and the sedative lorazepam as the primary drugs responsible for Jackson’s death.

The re-issued certificate lists “acute Propofol intoxication” as the main cause of death and “benzodiazepine effect” as a significant contributor.

Jackson died aged 50 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his rented LA mansion on June 25.

He is due to be buried at a walled Los Angeles cemetery on September 3. (ANI)

Living without a car in areas with high fast food availability ups obesity risk

Washington, September 2 (ANI): People who do not own a car, and live in areas where there are a number of fast food restaurants, may be at an increased risk of becoming obese, according to a study.

American researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have observed that people who live in areas with high fast food concentration and do not have a car are as much as 12 pounds heavier, compared to those living in neighbourhoods that lack such restaurants.

“Owning a car is generally associated with a more sedentary lifestyle and excess weight gain because people spend more time in their cars and less time walking,” said Dr. Sanae Inagami, study lead author and assistant professor, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Yet, her research team looked at whether a high concentration of fast food restaurants impacted this association, and found that not owning a car in areas where fast food was more readily available increased the risk of obesity.

“Fast food may be specific to weight gain in particular populations and locations. People who are less affluent don’t own cars and can’t go distances for healthier foods. As a result, they may end up opting for the lower-priced and high caloric foods available at fast food chains,” she said.

As part of the study, the researchers surveyed 2,156 adults in 63 neighbourhoods in Los Angeles County.

They observed that car owners, on average, weighed 8.5 pounds more than non-car owners, except in areas with high fast food concentration-five fast food restaurants per mile.

The researchers say that non-car owners in high fast food concentration areas were found to weigh 2.7 pounds more than car owners who lived in the same areas, and 12 pounds more than residents of areas without fast food outlets.

According to them, people who did not own a car, and lived in areas without fast food outlets, weighed the least.

“There has been a major focus on fast food and its impact on individual health, but we need to consider the availability of all types of restaurants at individual and community levels,” Sanae said.

“Since our study showed that total restaurant density was associated with weight gain in all individuals, not just those who did not own cars, we also need to encourage people to pay more attention to their food environment,” she added. (ANI)

Family wants justice, insists MJ’s dad

London, Sept 1 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s father Joe in his first public statement after the singer’s death was declared a homicide, has demanded justice.

The senior Jackson’s statement comes after the Los Angeles’ County Coroner declared that the King of Pop was killed by a cocktail of strong prescription drugs – Propofol and Lorazepam.

The corner’s ruling could put MJ’s physician Dr Conrad Murray in a tight spot.owever, Joe has refused to say anything about the role of the doc.

The Daily Star quoted him as telling U.S. TV’s the Today show: “I keep thinking, I just cant believe this happened to him… I’m not angry, I’m mad. I’m mad because I didn’t know all of this was going on, that’s what I’m mad about. I didn’t know he was taking that type of medication. They (the family) want justice to be done and that’s what is being done. I don’t know (if that means criminal charges).

“It’s the first time I’ve ever heard of the drug. That tells me that was foul play, that’s what it tells me and (there is) more to be investigated to see what was behind all of this stuff, not just Dr. Conrad Murray. Someone should pay. Not just someone, but all of them should pay that’s (sic) involved. I didn’t say doctors – everybody else that’s involved.”

The complete autopsy report of the pop icon – who died on June 25 – has not been released. (ANI)

MJ’s death ruled as homicide

London, August 29 (ANI): The Los Angeles Country Coroner has ruled Michael Jackson’s death as homicide caused by acute intoxication from powerful anaesthetic propofol and other conditions.

Propofol and the sedative lorazepam were concluded as the primary drugs responsible for Jackson’s death in the coroner’s report.

Other cocktail of sedatives, painkillers and stimulant found in the singer’s system were midazolam, diazepam, lidocaine and ephedrine, reports the Telegraph.

It is the first time Jackson’s death has been officially concluded homicide while the complete toxicology report remains sealed at the request of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney.

Detectives have been probing the circumstances leading to death of the King of Pop, who died aged 50 on June 25 from a cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles mansion.

Officials have quizzed Jackson’s team of doctors as part of the investigation and the star’s personal physician Conrad Murray has been at the centre of a manslaughter probe. (ANI)

MJ’s doc spent 47 mins making calls after he stopped breathing

London, August 26 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray has been accused of spending 47 minutes making calls to another doctor, a lawyer and a mystery associate after the singer stopped breathing.

Dr Steven Hoefflin, who treated Jackson for 25 years, alleged Murray phoned fellow medic Arnold Klein for advice on what to do as the King of Pop lay dying.

“Murray definitely called Klein because Klein taught him how to administer propofol,” the Sun quoted Hoefflin as saying.

“There were two in-state calls then one out-of-state. He was calling an attorney – he had to because Michael was dead.

“He tried to cover it up by telling everyone Michael had a weak pulse, but Michael was dead,” he added.

Hoefflin, a respected plastic surgeon, also claimed that Murray rang an attorney before informing a security guard to dial 911 and summon paramedics to Jackson’s Los Angeles home.

But a lawyer representing Murray recently denied claims that the medic left Jackson to make phone calls after giving him powerful anaesthetic Propofol.

Lawyer Ed Chernoff issued a statement seeking to clarify parts of a court affidavit unsealed in Houston, Texas.

The contents came to light as reports claimed that the Los Angeles County coroner had concluded Jackson’s death was homicide and that he had lethal levels of Propofol in his body when he died on June 25. (ANI)

MJ’s doctor denies leaving star to make phone calls

London, August 25 (ANI): The lawyer representing Michael Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray has denied that the medic left the star to make phone calls after giving him powerful anaesthetic Propofol.

Ed Chernoff sough to clarify allegations partially made after the emergence of a court affidavit in Houston, Texas.

The contents came to light as reports claimed that the Los Angeles County coroner had concluded that Jackson’s death was homicide, and that he had lethal levels of Propofol in his body when he died on June 25.

Murray was alleged to have left the singer alone to make some telephone calls, and found Jackson not breathing after his return.

But Chernoff slammed the claims involving Murray, who is at the centre of a manslaughter probe and has denied any wrongdoing. Much of what was in the search warrant affidavit is factual,” the Telegraph quoted Chernoff as saying.

“However, unfortunately, much is police theory. Most egregiously, the timeline reported by law enforcement was not obtained through interviews with Dr Murray, as was implied by the affidavit.

“Dr Murray simply never told investigators that he found Michael Jackson at 11:00 am not breathing. He also never said that he waited a mere 10 minutes before leaving to make several phone calls. In fact, Dr Murray never said that he left Michael Jackson’s room to make phone calls at all,” he added. (ANI)

MJ’s death was homicide, concludes coroner

London, August 25 (ANI): The Los Angeles County coroner has reportedly concluded Michael Jackson’s death was homicide.

The King of Pop, who was allegedly being treated for insomnia, had lethal levels of the strong anaesthetic Propofol in his body when he died, according to court papers.

Details of the coroners’ findings were revealed when a search warrant affidavit was made public in Texas, reports the Sun.

Investigators have quizzed the team of doctors who treated Jackson, including his personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray, who, though not named as a suspect, is at the centre of a manslaughter probe.

A search warrant affidavit for Murray in California read: “The Los Angeles Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner, Dr Sathyavagiswaran, indicated that he had reviewed the preliminary toxicology results and his preliminary assessment of Jackson’s cause of death was due to lethal levels of propofol (diprivan).”

The affidavit apparently revealed that Murray told LAPD detectives he had been giving the singer propofol as part of his treatment for insomnia, and feared the star was becoming addicted to the drug.

But Murray, who has denied any wrong doing, reportedly gave Jackson a lower dosage of propofol on the morning of his death after several other drugs failed to work.

MJ’s dermatologist denies office raid reports

London, Aug 22 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s dermatologist Arnold Klein has denied all reports which claim his Beverly Hills office was raided by cops.

Klein’s attorney Garo Ghazarian said police only wanted to “corroborate” existing evidence.

The Daily Express quoted him as telling talk show host Larry King: “Yes, I was there (when the coroner searched Klein’s office). They were not looking for anything new except they were looking to corroborate what had already been provided to them by cross-referencing reports with certain logs that is standard in the industry.”

Ghazarian also added that his client wasn’t even questioned by the police.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office visited Klein’s practice on Wednesday with a search warrant – a week after announcing Jackson’s autopsy report had been completed.

Jacko’s will names Diana Ross kids’ guardian

London, July 2 (ANI): Soul legend Diana Ross has been named the guardian of Michael Jackson’s children, if the late King of Pop’s mother is not able to look after them.

According to Jackson’s five-page will registered in Los Angeles County Superior Court, his 303 million pound estate was to be left in a trust for his kids, Prince Michael I, 12; Paris, 11, and Prince Michael II, seven.

The documents said that the icon’s estate consisted almost entirely of “non-cash, non-liquid assets, including primarily an interest in a catalogue of music royalty rights which is currently being administered by Sony ATV, and the interests of various entities.”

Jackson’s mother, Katherine, 79, was named the carer for the three youngsters, while Ross, 65, his mentor, is to be their back up as a guardian, reports the Telegraph.

Three associates for the King of Pop, attorney John Branca, John McClain and Barry Siegel, were also named co-executors of the will.

The document further confirmed no provisions had been made for Jackson’s former wife Debbie Rowe.

The Jackson family have not announced any funeral plans yet, and are yet to reveal where the singer may be buried. (ANI)
