Hundreds take part in ‘Ram Baraat’ in Agra

Agra, Sept 17 (ANI): Hundreds of people here took part in ‘Ram Baraat’, which is a part of the Ramlila celebrations.

Jeetander Chauhan, a worker, who erected the decorations for the celebrations, said that people were happy that god was among them.

“We are feeling that Lord Ram has appeared among us. Hundreds of people have come to witness this famous god’s marriage,” said Chauhan.

Maya Sharma, a devotee, said that women were also excited about this deity marriage.

“I’m really feeling good that ‘Baraat’ procession of Lord Rama and Sita is taking place. We are feeling good that god himself is present here,” said Sharma.

Every year, a new locality is chosen in Agra and festivities last for three days and the area is elaborately decorated with lights and flowers. The area is given a major face-lift befitting the venue for the divine marriage.

The marriage procession sees marriage between saint Shaligram who represents Lord Ram and holy Basil plant, which represents Sita, his wife.

The place is lit up with thousands of lights and non-stop music. The cinema theatres run film shows throughout the night to accommodate the migratory crowd.

These three days are like a carnival when people from all walks of life come together to have a great time.

The history of Ram Baraat is said to be around 125 years old, when Lala Kokamal, a cloth merchant, started the tradition of three-day festivities, revolving around the royal wedding. (ANI)

Wooden slippers still in demand

Faizabad, May 4 (ANI): Wooden slippers, which used to be popular in ancient India, are still in demand. The workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad District are making these slippers in hundreds.

Their religious significance dates back to the reign of Lord Ram. As per the legend, when Lord Ram went on banishment his brother Bharat put on the royal seat the wooden slippers of Lord Ram.

Keeping the pair on the seat, he kept the royal seat warm for Lord Ram. Bharat worshipped the slippers till Lord Ram’s return from the banishment.

Rajesh Kumar Das, a priest further elaborated the significance of these wooden slippers.

“They came into prominence when Lord Ramachandra wore them and some people even worship the wooden slippers like Bharat used to do,” said Das.

The wooden slippers are made out of mango logs and teak wood.

Ram, a worker who is into making these wooden slippers, said that the people generally buy these slippers considering that they are the god’s foot impression.

“People consider it as god’s foot impression and buy it. Considering it as god’s offering, they are also used in various Hindu rituals,” said Ram.

The workers making these wooden slippers are also an excellent example of communal harmony as hundreds of workers both Muslims and Hindus eke out their livelihood by making these wooden slippers. By Amit (ANI)

VHP satisfied with BJP’s election manifesto

New Delhi, May 1 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) chief has appreciated the inclusion of suggestions given by Dharma Raksha Manch in the election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“The election manifesto of the Bhartiya Janata Party not only mentions these 11 points but also defines the bases of development in the country keeping Indian values in mind. I think this is an issue to be taken care of. They have clearly mentioned in the 13th para of the manifesto that spirituality should be base of development,” Singhal said, addressing a news conference here.

The 11 points of Dharma Raksha Manch include construction of Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya, saving cows and rivers like Ganga that have religious significance, a common civil code and considering India as a spiritual leader and not a secular one among others.

Criticizing the Congress President Sonia Gandhi for denying existence of Ram Setu, he said the UPA Chairperson was trying to deny the Indian history.

“The government that is headed by Sonia Gandhi said that Ram was not a historical man, he has no existence. He can be a novel or a story. Ram was never there. And if Ram has no existence, he is not a historical man; in that case there was no war between Ram and Ravana, no Ram setu was constructed neither there is a Ram birth place”, said Ashok Singhal. A few hours before polling, Naxals struck a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp and blew up a railway station in Jharkhand.

Now, Paswan holds Congress culpable in Babri demolition

Patna, April 20 (IANS) Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan Monday defended his Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) colleague Lalu Prasad’s statement that both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress were responsible for the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid.

‘What wrong has he (Lalu Prasad) said,’ Paswan asked.

Taking a further dig at the Congress, which leads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) of which both Lalu Prasad and Paswan are key members, Paswan said about the political situation in his constituency Hajipur: ‘What is the Congress doing? When they know that they cannot garner even 2,000 votes in Hajipur, why did they put up a candidate against me? What strength are they trying to prove?’

The RJD and the LJP fell out with the Congress over the issue of seat sharing in Bihar — a miffed Congress went ahead to contest Bihar on its own while the RJD and the LJP tied up with the Samajwadi Party to form an electoral alliance for the 120 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Widening the gulf with the Congress, Lalu Prasad had said April 17 in Darbhanga in Bihar that the Congress was responsible for the demolition of the Babri mosque.

‘The Congress failed to protect the Babri Masjid as it did nothing to prevent it. Not only the BJP, the Congress is also equally responsible for the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.’

A large mob converged in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and destroyed the 16th century mosque Dec 6, 1992, claiming it was built at the very place where Lord Ram was born. The Narasimha Rao led-Congress government was then in power in New Delhi while Kalyan Singh presided over a BJP government in Lucknow.

While Congress wondered why Lalu Prasad had kept quiet about it so long, the BJP said the Congress, the RJD and the Samajwadi Party were playing politics on the Ayodhya issue to cater to a particular vote bank.

Sethusamudram canal work will be stopped, says Rajnath Singh

Aurangabad/ New Delhi, Apr 20 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Rajnath Singh vowed to stop a controversial Sethusamudram shipping canal project, if voted to power.

Religious groups say the project will destroy a mythical bridge of sandade by Hindu god, Lord Ram.

“This government led by Congress party is planning to demolish the Ram Setu. If our government comes to power, then no one can dare to destroy the Rama Setu,” Rajnath Singh said in an election rally in Jalna, a parliamentary constituency in Maharashtra.

The 560 million dollars Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project is dredgiong a channel in a narrow strip of sea between India and Sri Lanka, reducing distances and cutting costs for freight traffic.

But religious groups and opposition politicians have called on the government to stop the project, saying it will demolish a bridge of sand linking India and Sri Lanka which was built by Lord Ram.

Dredging for the project began in 2005 and the channel — 12 metres deep, 300 metres wide and almost 90 km long — will cut through the Ram Sethu bridge and link the Palk Bay with the Gulf of Mannar.

Meanwhile, in a move that could boost the BJP’s prospects in Darjeeling constituency in West Bengal, an ethnic group fighting for separate statehood pledged support to the BJP.

“The demand for a separate Gorkhaland is about 102 years old. All governments including those headed by Congress or any other party have not raised the issue of Gorkhaland or any other issues related to the Gorkha community. Since BJP is the first national party that put Gorkhaland issue in its poll manifesto, so we are supporting it,” said Vishal Rai Kirat, general secretary of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in New Delhi.

The GJM is supporting senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh from Darjeeling parliamentary constituency.

Ethnic Nepalis or Gorkhas living in the Darjeeling Hills are demanding a separate “Gorkhaland” state be carved out of West Bengal.

The State Government in West Bengal has been resisting demands for a separate state to Gorkhas.

GNLF launched the agitation for a separate state in 1980, but dropped the emand after New Delhi agreed to confer partial autonomy in 1988 for theepalese-speaking people. (ANI)

BJP manifesto has no value: Congress

NEW DELHI: Attacking the BJP for its manifesto, Congress on Friday said the party was “not in tune” with India and had “lost” its way.

It also said that the manifesto was of no value. “Their problem is they give an agenda to people which has no value because when it comes to NDA, the partners are not willing to accept their agenda. Therefore, this is not a national agenda. This is a parochial BJP agenda which has no value,” Union minister and Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal said here.

The BJP released its election manifesto earlier in the day.

Claiming that BJP was “not in tune” with the country, Sibal said “BJP has lost its way. This manifesto is a reflection of the fact that they have lost their way. They will never be in tune with India. They will always be the BJP which is never in tune with India.”

Another party spokesperson Ashwini Kumar slammed BJP for raking up the Ram temple issue ahead of elections.

“Whenever elections come, BJP rakes up the issue of Ram temple to divide the country and society,” he said.

Asked about the BJP raising the issue of Article 370, Kumar said “they (BJP) are not interested in secular polity of the country. They have one agenda and that is to whip up sentiments. It is not going to succeed”.

Kumar said every Indian respected Lord Ram. “Nobody has any fight with Ram. The fight is against those who are out to divide the country,” he added

BJP bets on Hindutva as it woos middle class, military votes

New Delhi, April 3 (IANS) Making a determined pitch to return to power in what promises to be one of India’s toughest elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday unveiled major sops for the military, the middle class and the poor as it sought the popular mandate.

Leading the multi-party National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the BJP, however, stuck to its Hindutva agenda while making it clear that nothing controversial would be thrust on its allies without whose help it cannot form a government.

BJP’s prime ministerial nominee L.K. Advani told journalists at the BJP headquarters that the so-called Third Front did not stand a chance in the April-May Lok Sabha elections and that any new government would be linked either to the Congress or his party.

The 48-page manifesto made no reference to the ‘India Shining’ theme that led to the NDA’s shock defeat in 2004, propelling the Congress, which then focussed on ‘aam admi’ (common man), to power.

The BJP said it was committed to building a grand Ram temple at the site of Ayodhya’s Babri mosque that was razed in 1992 after an emotive campaign led by Advani.

It vowed to work for an altered shipping channel through the Palk Strait so as not to damage the Ram Setu, which it is believed was built by Hindu god Ram.

‘There is an overwhelming desire of the people in India and abroad to have a grand temple at the birthplace of (Lord) Ram,’ the manifesto said. ‘The BJP will explore all possibilities, including negotiations and judicial proceedings, to facilitate the construction of the Ram temple.’

The BJP added that it remained firm on abrogating article 370 of the constitution which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, India’s only Muslim majority state.

Advani underlined that the manifesto reflected the BJP’s thinking and he was not asking (its allies) to accept it. ‘We will send it to them and ask (what) they agree with and then jointly prepare a NDA agenda.’

Even as it harped on Hindutva issues, it announced a string of fiscal concessions amid the current economic downslide to attract the millions of decisive poor and middle class votes.

The manifesto promised that a BJP-led NDA government would provide 35 kg of rice or wheat every month at Rs.2 per kg to the poorest of the poor and waive off farm loans.

The BJP said all military and paramilitary personnel would be exempted from income tax, take steps to set up a separate Pay Commission for armed forces and implement a one-rank-one-pension scheme. The party said those earning up to Rs.300,000 a year would be exempted from paying income tax, the amount going up to Rs.350,000 for women and senior citizens.

And for a party that has traditionally counted on traders as its support base, it pledged a ban on foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector so as to help the domestic retail trade.

The manifesto blamed the Congress for the socio-economic backwardness of Muslims, India’s largest religious minority, and said every Indian felt proud about ‘the success stories of Muslims in sports, cinema, industry and a host of other fields’. The BJP said it would promote all languages, Urdu included.

Advani made no reference to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which last month ended its 11-year-old alliance with the BJP, but pointed out that besides the Shiv Sena, Akali Dal and Janata Dal-United (JD-U), four new parties had teamed up with the BJP to fight the elections that begin April 16.

He identified them as the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

In other promises, the BJP said it would introduce:

– education and job quotas for economically backward sections other than Dalits, tribals and Other Backward Castes (OBCs).

– an improved law on the lines of the Prevention of Terrorist Activities (POTA).

– use of coercive diplomacy against countries engaging in exporting terror.

– a comprehensive National Identity Card for all Indians.

The Congress dismissed the BJP manifesto as one of no consequence. Congress spokesperson Kapil Sibal told reporters: ‘They have a narrow agenda, narrow vision and narrow mind. This manifesto has no meaning since it is not the NDA’s manifesto.’

BJP leader harps on Ram Temple issue

Ayodhya, Mar 27 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vinay Katiyar reiterated the party’s promise of constructing a temple dedicated to Lord Ram on the ruins of a razed mosque.

Katiyar along with saints visited the city and denied that the party had put the controversial proposal on the backburner.

“The structure will be completed soon. The Ram Temple was built in 1992,” Katiyar said.

The BJP has been whipping up the issue of Ram Temple as part of its campaign ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The BJP rose to prominence on the back of a Hindu revivalist campaign that sought the construction of a Ram Temple on the site of a 16th century mosque that was razed down by mobs in 1992.

Hindu hardliners say the mosque was built by Muslim invaders after destroying a Ram Temple at the site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party says it was approached by BJP for electoral tie-up

Lucknow, Feb 19 (ANI): The Samajwadi Party (SP) has said it had received an offer of an electoral alliance from the opposition BJP-led NDA alliance.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters here on Wednesday that NDA convenor, George Fernandes had broached the idea of a tie-up while they were dining with BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

Yadav said his response was that the BJP should drop its main poll plank of building a temple dedicated to Lord Ram at the site of a razed 16th century mosque.

“George came to me, and I told him all the four things. First demand was to drop the issue of Ayodhya, leave out your opposition to Article 370, and third thing was to change views about Muslims. Atal said that if we will leave these issues then what would be left with us?” Yadav said.

Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, said that he would implement ‘Gandhigiri’ in politics, a theme which gave him prominence in the film ‘Munnabhai MBBS.’

Dutt started his pre-poll campaign as a SP candidate ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

“I think, ‘Gandhigiri’ is a very important factor. I think I’ll implement it in politics,” said Dutt.

Asked whether he would have time to devote for his constituency as he is based in Mumbai, Dutt said he would follow in the footsteps of his father, who spent a lot of time with and for his followers.

“My family is known for commitment. I will devote time for Lucknow. My father Sunil Dutt has done a lot for his constituency. I am his son and will do all that what I have learnt from him,” said Dutt.

BJP revives Ram Temple plan ahead of polls

Gorakhpur (UP), Feb 16 (ANI): The Prime Ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), L K Advani, asserted on Sunday that his party, if voted to power in the ensuing elections, will construct the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

“I want to tell you that we with greater excitement say Jai Sri Ram. But our excitement in the real sense of saying Jai Sri Ram would be on the day when Ram Temple would be constructed at his birth place in Ayodhya,” Advani said at a public rally here on Sunday.

He also mentioned that his party had got an opportunity to rule the nation because of the Ram Temple campaign.

“The main reason for which the BJP has got five year tenure to rule was because of the people of Uttar Pradesh and the Ayodhya campaign, which has changed the whole politics of India,” Advani added.

The BJP rose to prominence on the back of a Hindu revivalist campaign that sought the construction of a Ram Temple on the site of a 16th century mosque that was razed to the ground by Hindu fundamentalists in 1992.

Hindu hardliners claim the mosque was built by Muslim invaders after destroying a Ram Temple at the site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, the King of Ayodhya.

After winning general elections in 1999, the NDA Government was forced to abandon its plans to construct the temple by its secular coalition partners. (ANI)

Congress doesn’t need certificate on terrorism from anyone: Sonia

New Delhi, Feb.8, (ANI): Responding to the allegation that the Congress-led UPA government was going ‘soft’ on terror, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday said that the Congress Party did not require certificate from anyone over effectively dealing with terrorism in the country.

“Those who address the people on the basis of religion, those who misguide people by taking Lord Ram’s name, cannot effectively deal with terrorism. The party, which has lost two leaders while fighting terrorism, does not need any certificate. Only that party can fight terrorism which has the support of every section of the society,” Sonia Gandhi remarked while addressing a rally at the Ram Lila ground.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), earlier in the day, blamed the central government of going ‘soft’ in its approach to cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, when senior BJP leader L. K. Advani criticized the centre over Mumbai attacks stating: “It was not so much a case of intelligence failure as governance failure.”

BJP President Rajnath Singh, during the national executive meet on Saturday, had stated that the NDA would ensure building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, in case the party returned to power with majority. (ANI)

BJP revives Ram Temple issue at Nagpur conclave

Nagpur, Feb.8 (ANI): The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday reiterated its vow to construct the Lord Ram temple in Ayodhya, an issue that has been a flashpoint of tension between Hindus and Muslims for years, if the party is voted to power in the ensuing elections.

The raising of this issue with elections just months away, is likely to queer the pitch between the BJP and its political allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Most constituents in the NDA are reportedly not in favour of bring the Ram Temple issue to the forefront of the campaign out of fears that it might lose the Muslim and secular vote.

“As far as the issue of Ram Mandir (Lord Rama’s temple) is concerned, it is the issue of our faith. No one can shake BJP’s faith and reverence to Lord Rama. We will build the Ram temple in Ayodhya, and we are waiting for the right opportunity,” asserted Rajnath Singh, President of BJP.

Hindu hardliners have contended that Muslim invaders built the Babri mosque after destroying a temple that existed at the birthplace of Lord Rama.

Rajnath Singh vows to build temple at Ayodhya

Nagpur, Feb 7 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh said on Saturday that nobody could shake the party’s faith in Lord Ram, in honour of whom a grand temple will be built at Ayodhya.

Rajnath’s inaugural speech at the two-day BJP National Council meet left thousands of party men shouting the chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

He critisised the failure of Congress to resolve the Ram Janmabhoomi issue.

Rajnath assured that if the BJP comes to power, it would try to set up a fast-track court to resolve the issue and take other effective measures after keeping allies into confidence.

“The day BJP will get a clear majority we will, if necessary, bring a law on the issue,” he said.

The BJP has been severely criticised for its direct involvement in the movement which culminated in the destruction of the Babri Masjid in December 6,1992.

However, the BJP has been repeatedly denied the blaim over the years, saying that it wanted the demolition of the Babri Mosque through lawful process. (ANI)
