Terry tells French they were wrong to expel Anelka

(Reuters) – France made a mistake in expelling striker Nicolas Anelka from their World Cup squad, his Chelsea captain and former England skipper John Terry said on Sunday.

Sports

Terry told reporters at England’s World Cup base at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus that he admired Anelka as a player and as a man and felt it was wrong to send him home on Saturday.

He said: “I see they sent him home for voicing his opinion and maybe a few of us (England players) will be sent home after this evening!”

Anelka was sent home after allegedly insulting France coach Raymond Domenech last Thursday during their 2-0 defeat by Mexico in a Group A game at Polokwane.

Terry was referring to a planned crisis meeting of the England squad with manager Fabio Capello scheduled to take place later on Sunday evening.

He added: “But I can speak honestly about Nico. He is a really good guy.

“Before he came to Chelsea, a lot negative stuff was written about him but as a person you won’t find a better man in football.

“He is very quiet but he has been in the game a long time and he knows his football so, if Nico had something to say to me, I would stand up and listen — because he is a great player as well

“It is obviously the wrong decision.”

Turkey sees no impact on Israel drone delivery

June 1 (Reuters) – Turkey’s Defence Minister Vecdi Gonul said on Tuesday a diplomatic crisis with Israel after the Jewish state stormed a Turkish-backed aid convoy will not affect the planned delivery of Israel-made Heron drones to Turkey.

Israel’s long-time Muslim ally Turkey has recalled its envoy to Israel and cancelled joint military exercises after Israeli marines raided an aid flotilla bound for Gaza on Monday.

Earlier this year, the two countries, which have a close military alliance, wrapped up the purchase of 10 Heron drones in a deal worth $180 million. (Reportingby Tulay Karadeniz; Writing by Ibon Villelabeitia; Editing by David Stamp)

100 missing after motorboat sinks in Amazon river

Lima, May 26 — At least 100 people went missing on Wednesday in Peru after the motorboat they were travelling in sank in the Amazon river, Peruvian radio station RPP reported. According to RPP, some 80 survivors had been rescued, and two bodies had also been recovered.

The motorboat Camila, which had a capacity for 160 passengers and according to survivors was carrying at least 200 at the time of the accident, sank as it travelled through the village of Santa Rosa, near the Colombian border. It reportedly had a hole in its hull.

The accident happened around 2 am, when most of the passengers were asleep. The authorities took a long time to reach this remote area, and preliminary rescue efforts were carried out by locals

EXCLUSIVE – Players put the knife in, says disappointed Els

Ernie Els has hit out at players who criticised his redesign of Wentworth’s West Course this week, saying they had “put the knife” into him.

Wentworth owner Richard Caring, who spent 6.5 million pounds ($9.34 million) on the changes, had been “kicked in the teeth” by the players, Els told Reuters in an exclusive interview .

“If they had criticisms they could’ve handled it differently. That’s the sad part of the whole week, a lot of the guys I’ve known for a very long time came out and basically put the knife in and I don’t really appreciate that,” Els said on Sunday.

The redesign left few of the 18 holes untouched and several players at the PGA Championship complained in the media about the changes, especially the new moat and elevated green at the 18th.

“There is going to be criticism with any new design but I really wasn’t expecting the backlash I got,” Els said. “I don’t think anybody deserved it.

“If the people who made all those comments, especially the players, look back at what they said and what they achieved this week, it was all negative,” said Els after finishing well down the field following a closing 72 for 287, three over par.

“The tour doesn’t need it, the club doesn’t need it, the owner who has put all this money in doesn’t need it, I don’t need it.”

Caring acknowledged mistakes had been made with the redesign of the famous West Course and told reporters on Friday that he would take the blame.

“It’s unfortunate he had to come out (and say that),” said Els. “He is the guy who spent 6.5 million pounds on the changes.

“Who on earth is going to spend that money to enhance a golf course on television and make the sponsor happy, make the players happy and then the players kick him in the teeth because they don’t like a couple of holes?

CRITICAL COMMENTS

“For all this money we are playing for (a $5.63-million prize fund) we could be playing down the road…not come in here like a bunch of spoiled golfers,” said the world number seven.

“This guy is enhancing the flagship event, the whole tour, and players come in and criticise that. That’s amazing — how must he feel?”

Els said he could not understand why some players had not spoken to him directly.

“Some players who made critical comments came to me, some players haven’t come to me — and I don’t understand that.”

The 40-year-old South African added: “Obviously the 18th didn’t quite come out the way we wanted…but we didn’t need a bunch of know-all people to criticise everything — that is the disappointing part.

“These greens were only laid in November and December and we are now holding the biggest tournament on tour on these greens. I think it’s a hell of a feat by the whole team.”

Els said he would make some changes for the 2011 PGA Championship, particularly the eighth and 18th holes.

“Definitely 18. I can show you the plans I drew for it at the get-go,” said Els. “I’d also like to make changes on eight, I don’t like the heather on the mounds there.

“I’d even like to change the eighth green because that’s another one I wanted lower.

“But for the rest I think it’s unbelievable. The green superintendent Chris Kennedy has really got these bunkers almost the way we want them,” added the triple major winner.

Christina Aguilera says no to reconciliation with dad

London, May 14 (ANI): Christina Aguilera says she sees no reason to have her long-time estranged dad back in her life.

Aguilera, 29, briefly patched up with her father Fausto in 2009 only to realise she had too many bad memories associated with him.

And now she doesn”t want to reconcile with him.

“It”s (relationship) pretty nonexistent. I”m in a place in my life where I just don”t see a reason for it. There”s always room for forgiveness – and I do forgive – but you grow up and make choices for your family,” the Daily Express quoted Aguilera, as telling Latina magazine.

In 2009 the beautiful singer opened up about her childhood memories in a documentary.

She told E!: “I witnessed a lot of unpleasant things – a lot of pushing and shoving and fighting and quarrelling. Growing up I did not feel safe. Feeling powerless is the worst feeling in the world. I turned to singing as an outlet. The pain at home is where my love for music came from.” (ANI)

Sean Foley likely to be Tiger’s new swing coach

London, May 12 (ANI): Sean Foley is being touted as the favourite to be Tiger Woods’ new swing coach, after long-time coach Hank Haney parted ways with the star a few days ago.

Tiger had a stellar career under Haney’s guidance winning six Major titles, but in recent times his performance has left much to be desired with his ranking slipping to 171 on the PGA Tour.

“It is in both of our best interests for me to step aside as Tiger’s coach, I believe we will all see Tiger play once again like we all know he can,” the Daily Express quoted Haney as having said.

Meanwhile, Foley has indicated his keenness to fill Haney’s shoes and restore Woods back to his peak but noted that there was no vacancy, the paper reports.

Canadian Foley, coaches Justin Rose near Woods’ Florida home and spent time with him at last week’s Players Championship during a practice round with two of his other clients, Sean O’Hair and Hunter Mahan. (ANI)

Manchester United to sign Anelka if talks with Chelsea collapse

London, May 8 (ANI): Manchester United is ready to sign striker Nicolas Anelka if his contract negotiations with Chelsea collapse.

The striker has only a year left on his Blues deal and talks are going on for a new two-year offer, but United has said it is ready to pounce if anything goes wrong.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-time admirer of the striker, The Sun reports.

He first looked at signing Anelka when he went on loan to Liverpool in 2002 and almost got him again before he left Bolton for Chelsea in an 18 million pound deal in January 2008.

Ferguson wants Anelka to replace Dimitar Berbatov and he could get his man for an eight million pound fee.

Anelka was the Premiership’s top scorer last season with 19 and has 13 goals so far this campaign. (ANI)

Malaysian Indian Congress chief ‘under pressure to quit’

Kuala Lumpur, May 7 (IANS) S. Samy Vellu, long-time chief of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), is ‘under pressure’ to quit and make way for a younger colleague by the leadership of the ruling alliance Barisan Nasional (BN), a media report said Friday.

Claiming to speak for Malaysia’s over 1.7 million ethnic Indians, the MIC is a key BN constituent.

Vellu, who has been heading the party since 1979 and was a long-time minister, lost his ninth bid at re-election and the MIC had fared badly in the March 2008 polls.

He is ‘under pressure from every side’ to quit even though the party seems to be reviving as indicated by its nominee’s victory in the prestigious parliamentary by-election for the Hulu Selangor seat last month, The Star newspaper said.

P. Kamalanathan, who won the seat, was however not Vellu’s choice. He was hand-picked by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, who is also the BN chief.

‘The outcome of the Hulu Selangor by-election saw Indian voters returning to Barisan Nasional but only because a younger and more proactive candidate was fielded,’ the newspaper said.

‘With signs of Indian voters returning to Barisan Nasional, the MIC may need to complete its succession plan to ensure the flow is not reversed.

‘Pressure from every side is mounting on Vellu to retire sooner and not hang on until his term expires in May 2012,’ a senior Barisan leader was quoted as saying on condition of anonymity by the newspaper.

‘The Barisan’s top leadership is confident it can sway Indian voters but only with a new man at the helm of the MIC.

‘A new leadership and a new era would bring hope to the voters,’ the Barisan leader said.

‘The Barisan is also changing rapidly and we can’t talk change with the political veterans clinging on. A new era requires a new leadership MIC,’ he added.

With the next general election coming soon, Najib needs newer and younger leaders at the helm of the MIC and other Barisan component parties before facing the voters.

Vellu staying on until 2012 will not gel with the Barisan’s plans to prepare for a general election where younger voters numbering over five million will determine victory or defeat for either of the political coalitions, the newspaper said.

Hamilton reconciles with dad, on the lookout for new manager

London, May 7 (ANI): Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has made up with his father after a cold war that lasted two months.

The duo had fallen out earlier when Hamilton had relieved his father and long-time manager of his managerial duties days before the start of the F1 season.

“We have been in contact recently. He”s coming to terms with it. He”s said he supports me. That’s all I”ve always wanted from my dad,” an elated Hamilton was quoted by The Daily Express, as saying.

His father, who had been handling him since his karting days, was stunned at being dropped, leading to the split.

The move has had the world’s top sports managers lining up to for the vacancy. Hamilton did not go in for a replacement, preferring to mull over his options before taking a call.

The reunion does not mean that his dad will play an active role in selecting his successor.

“I’ll probably speak to him, but we won’t decide together on my new manager. I want to set the direction I’m going in. It’s not a weight off my mind. It just takes time. The future’s bright. I’m thinking of getting someone while I am in Formula One, someone who would help me grow as a brand,” says Hamilton

Amongst those vying for the job are leading talent agency IMG and ace manager Simon Fuller known for catapulting the Beckhams to fame. He also counts Andy Murray as his client. (ANI)

Kristen Stewart refuses to ”cheapen” relationships with dating chat

London, May 7 (ANI): Twilight actress Kristen Stewart has said that speaking about her relationship with co-star Robert Pattinson would “cheapen” it.

Stewart insists naming her lovers would “cheapen” her relationships, reports the dailyexpress.co.uk.

“I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them. People say, ‘Just say who you’re dating.

“Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.’ It’s like, ‘No they won’t!’ They’ll ask for specifics,” she told America’s Elle magazine.

For a long time now, the stunner has been dogged by rumours that she is secretly romancing Pattinson, forcing the pair to continually deny reports they are together. (ANI)

Giant airship can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000-ft above Earth

Washington, May 6 (ANI): A 235-foot prototype Bullet Airship, called The Bullet 580, can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000 feet above Earth.

The inflatable airship, which has a helium-filled tanker and an inner hull filled with ambient air, can fly heavy instruments to high altitudes and remote locations, or serve as an eye-in-the-sky. It will be inflated later this month, for the first time ever.

The airship, a pioneering technological innovation in a long time, will be used as a sky based platform to relay communications and to keep watch on oil spills, forest fires or even pirates at sea.

“We”re kind of like a truck in the sky that can have different types of payloads for different requirements,” Discovery News quoted Mike Lawson as saying. Lawson is the chief executive of Alabama-based E-Green Technologies.

“The bags expand as we go up in altitude,” said Lawson. “If you hit a hard landing with any of our airships, it”s just going to kind of bounce. (ANI)

Stosur falls to Henin in Stuttgart final

Samantha Stosur fell just short of winning her second straight WTA tournament on Sunday when she went down to former world number one Justine Henin in Stuttgart.

The seventh-seeded Australian lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in the final, giving Henin a French Open boost.

Since ending her 18-month hiatus in January, Henin’s win was her first title in her third final since coming out of retirement, having last won here in 2007.

“It’s very emotional for me to win here,” said Henin.

“I never thought I would be back here again, not even a year ago.

“I have had a fantastic week and I can now say I will try to be back here next year.”

Henin, who has won seven Grand Slam titles, revealed she first had the idea to come back to tennis when she saw Roger Federer win at Roland Garros.

“To see Roger win the French Open last year, and keep fighting so hard, brought back the fire in me which had not been there for a long time before,” said the 27-year-old, who revealed her pet dog is named ‘Deuce’.

“I still have to work hard for the next few weeks, months and hopefully years.

“It was fantastic to get away from tennis, but it feels so good to be back and share all these emotions again.”

Henin’s 42nd title in her 60th final puts the former world number one back inside the world’s top 20 as she bids to win a fifth French Open title at Roland Garros which starts on May 23.

Stosur was contesting her second straight final, having won last month’s Charleston tournament, but she had her 11-match winning streak ended by Henin’s victory.

“It’s been a good week, I have really enjoyed playing here and it was nice to be back after a few years away,” said Stosur.

“It’s been a nice feeling to get into the final, but Justine was a bit too strong for me.

“In the third set she got really aggressive, put in some great returns which put me under pressure and she broke me three times in a row.

“That was the key to her win.”

Both Henin and Stosur, who is set to move up the rankings to eighth, reached the final as wildcard entrants, but Henin more than proved her credentials with victory over fellow ex-world number one Jelena Jankovic in the quarter-finals.

Henin made the crucial breakthrough in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead in the first set which she never relinquished having defended the single break point against her.

But in the second set, Stosur finally got the breakthrough she had worked for in the fifth game when Henin succumbed to allow the Australian a 4-2 lead and she then broke the Belgian again to take the set.

But Henin dug deep into her vast experience on clay and broke Stosur in the third game of the decider for a 3-1 lead and having broken her opponent twice more, Henin took the set and title in style.

Brit Muslim boxer to take on Mayweather, Pacquiao in a year’s time

London, May 4 (ANI): WBA World light welterweight champion Amir Khan has said that he will be ready to take on American legend Floyd Mayweather Junior and Philippine Manny Pacquiao in a year’s time.

Khan, who defends his title against Paulie Malignaggi in New York on May 15, said it is only a matter of fine tuning his skills before he can take on the world’s top two fighters.

The British boxer is willing to move up a division to fight undefeated Mayweather, who cruised to a unanimous points verdict over Sugar Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on Saturday night, The Sun reports.

“In 12 months from now, I will be ready for Manny and Floyd Mayweather Junior,” Khan said.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were due to fight this year before rows over drug testing got in the way.

But Khan has no doubt the money-spinning bout will go ahead. “I know them both well and they both want to fight,” he said.

“It’s the promoters trying to sort out all the details that are holding it up. Who would win? That’s a tough one but I’d say Manny. He’s more aggressive and I think he’d take Mayweather into an uncomfortable zone where he hasn”t been for a very long time,” Khan said.

“Floyd likes to control a fight but so does Manny and he has a higher work rate. If things go well, I could end up fighting the winner. This game’s all about timing. You have to know the best time to have these big fights. I want to catch these guys when they have come off their peak,” he added. (ANI)

Obama admits oil spill is an environmental disaster, vows to fight it “relentlessly”

Washington, May 3 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has acknowledged that the oil slick in Louisiana was an environmental disaster waiting to happen.

The oil spill occurred off the coast of Louisiana and has extended up to Florida. It is moving rapidly along the US coast.

“We””re dealing with a massive and potentially unprecedented environment disaster, it could extend for a long time. It could jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of Americans who call this place home.” Obama told Fox News.

The Obama administration is under severe criticism for it’s handling of the problem with parallels being drawn with the Bush administration’s mismanagement of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Obama repudiated such claims, saying the ultimate responsibility lay with British Petroleum (BP).

“From day one, we have prepared and planned for the worst. Your government will do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to stop this crisis,” he reassured.

The cost of the massive government exercise to combat the spill is to be borne by BP. (ANI)

Tiger Woods ‘meets divorce lawyer’

London, May 3 (ANI): Tiger Woods seems to have finally realized his marriage is over.

The scandal-ridden golfer — who cheated on wife Elin Nordegren with dozens of different women — recently met with divorce lawyer Jeff Fisher.

Fisher is the same attorney who represented golf god Greg Norman in his split from his first wife Laura.

According to sources, Tiger and Elin — who is currently in her native, Sweden, with the couple’s two young children — are set to came face to face later this month for a divorce showdown.

Elin is said to be keen to return to Sweden permanently — but Tiger has issues with this, as he wants to be able to see his children regularly.

“She”s returning from Sweden within two weeks and that”s when events with Tiger will come to a showdown,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Meanwhile, sources are adamant that Elin, 30, is definitely divorcing Tiger.

An insider said: “It”s 100 per cent happening. Elin and her mum met with a lawyer before they went to Sweden. It”s going to take a long time to go through. But she will go through with it. She will do it slowly and carefully.” (ANI)
