Ferdinand has been replaced by Tottenham strike Michael Dawson.

Sean Connery retired because he didn”t want to play small roles: Michael Caine

London, May 21 (ANI): Michael Caine has criticized his long time friend Sean Connery for being stubborn and refusing to act in smaller roles.

Caine, who has forayed back into films of late after playing a series of supporting roles in films like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and Austin Powers in Gold Member, thinks that the 007 star should have followed his lead and settled for less meaty roles.

Caine said that Connery, 79, was too interested in chasing “young man roles”.

“The movie business retired Sean Connery because he didn”t want to play small parts about old men and they weren”t offering him any young parts in romantic leads. So he was gone,” The Daily Express quoted Caine as saying. (ANI)

Doc claims Presley died of an ”embarrassing” case of chronic constipation

Washington, May 6 (ANI): Elvis Presley’s doctor Nick Nichopoulos has revealed that the King of Rock and Roll died due to chronic constipation.

It was reported in 1977 that Presley died due to cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat problem that arises due to taking drugs, obesity and a weak heart. But Presley’s long time friend and physician Nick has now revealed that he died due to chronic constipation, reports Fox News.

“After he died we weren’t sure of the exact cause of death so I continued to do some research and I had some doctors call me from different places and different med schools that were doing research on constipation and different problems you can get into with it,” now retired Nick said.

“I just want to get the story straight – it all made sense with the new research that was done,” he added.

Dr Nick was with Presley for the last twelve years of his life. He also made an attempt to resuscitate him the day he died.

He recently released a book called “The King and Dr. Nick.” The book is about his time with Presley and his theory on his shocking death.

“We didn’t realize until the autopsy that his constipation was as bad – we knew it was bad because it was hard for us to treat, but we didn’t realize what it had done,” Dr Nick said.

“We just assumed that the constipation was secondary to the meds that he was taking for his arthritic pain and for his insomnia,” he added.

Dr. Nick also said that Presley’s colon was 5 to 6 inches in diameter as compared to a normal width of 2 to 3 inches, and instead of being the 4 to 5 feet long, his colon was 8 to 9 feet in length. (ANI)

“Sandra is a loving, giving person, and Louis could not be in a better home. She could not be happier,” he added.

Lopez told Extra: “We knew about him a couple of months ago. I love that she was able to do it privately and really take care of Louis, which is first and foremost.” (ANI)

Pakistan top judge again at centre of controversy

(Reuters) – Being a thorn in the side of Pakistan’s presidents is a familiar role for the country’s top judge, but long-time allies of the chief justice now worry that the conflict between the two branches is about more than the law.

The fight between Pakistan’s judiciary and executive branches, as they dig in for another round of legal fisticuffs over the fate of President Asif Ali Zardari, is about old corruption cases reopened after a controversial amnesty law was thrown out in December.

But the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Iftikhar Chaudhry — and his colleagues on the court — are also playing to the crowds, a long-time friend says.

“They are playing for the galleries, giving populist remarks,” said retired judge Tariq Mehmud, who has known Chaudhry, 61, for more than 30 years. “That should not be done.”

The chief justice and members of his office declined to comment for this story.

Chaudhry’s many supporters say he’s standing up for ordinary Pakistanis disgusted by the rampant corruption among the ruling class.

They say he is a man of honor who has checked two unpopular presidents — Zardari and former military president Pervez Musharraf before him.

“For the first time the judiciary has become independent,” said Rasul Bakhsh Rais, political science professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences.

“We can’t really correct the political system and hold public office holders accountable without an independent judiciary,” But not everyone is happy with Chaudhry. He has reopened old cases after the voiding of the 2007 amnesty law, thrown out by the Supreme Court on the grounds that it was unconstitutional.

The amnesty had protected several thousand people — including Zardari — from old corruption charges and allowed their return to politics. With the amnesty revoked, these cases are active again.

“The real contest is between those forces in Pakistan who want to establish the rule of law and those who want to flout it,” said Rais.

Chaudhry himself is a reminder that the government can’t afford to push the judiciary too hard.

Former military president Pervez Musharraf suspended Chaudhry in March 2007, apparently fearing the judge would oppose his legally questionable bid to hold on to power.

The move triggered large protests and violent clashes.

His old friend Mehmud said at the time Chaudhry was buoyed by the mass support.

“He’s feeling great, he’s very happy,” Mehmud said.

“It was beyond his expectation, he couldn’t conceive it,” he said of the outpouring of support.

Musharraf dismissed Chaudhry later that year but he was reinstated by Zardari after Musharraf was forced from office, but not immediately and only after considerable pressure on the new president.

Zardari was apparently wary that Chaudhry would do exactly what he ended up doing — throw out the amnesty.

What critics see as Chaudhry’s dogged pursuit of Zardari may be eroding his appeal now, however, at least in some circles.

His old friend Mehmud now criticizes him, albeit indirectly, given the expansive nature of Pakistan’s contempt of court laws, which make criticizing specific justices risky.

“Some judges are ridiculing and threatening people, which is not the way an apex court should behave,” he said.

Mehmud was referring to recent reports that Chaudhry was hauling second-level bureaucrats before the bench and berating them for not implementing his decision on the amnesty law quickly enough.

Indeed, the liberal Dawn newspaper wrote in an editorial on Wednesday that the Supreme Court was “on the warpath” and that it appeared the court was interested only in the fate of Zardari and his inner circle.

“The Supreme Court must always be wary of even a hint of personalization in its actions,” the paper wrote.

Another senior lawyer involved in restoring Chaudhry said the judiciary’s concentration on high-profile and political cases was breeding disappointment among ordinary litigants.

“Basically, only one case is being heard every day. The actual cases of the people are not being heard,” he said. “Definitely it causes resentment.”

Dedicated to the law and to his wife and four children, Chaudhry is a workaholic with few outside interests, colleagues say.

Moran’s killer ‘dressed like Dickie Knee’

A Victorian court has heard a man who shot underworld figure Des Moran was wearing a disguise similar to that of television character Dickie Knee.

Four people including his sister-in-law Judy Moran are charged with his murder.

The committal hearing yesterday heard Desmond “Tuppence” Moran was left lying in a pool of blood after he was repeatedly shot in the doorway of an Ascot Vale cafe last June.

He was dead by the time paramedics arrived.

A witness told the court she saw a man wearing a long black wavy wig and cap run from the cafe.

The court heard he looked like the Dickie Knee character from TV show Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

The executor of Mr Moran’s will, Adrian Jones, told the court his long-time friend was worth an estimated $750,000 when he was shot dead.

The estate is to go to Judy Moran’s grandchildren.

He told the court some of the money was owed to Des Moran from the estate of Lewis Moran, the slain gangland figure and Judy Moran’s former husband.

The court heard Des Moran would complain his sister-in-law thought everyone owed her a living.

‘Crying and carrying on’

Earlier, the court heard Judy Moran was acting oddly when she arrived at the scene of her brother-in-law’s murder.

A witness told the court she arrived at the murder scene within 15 minutes.

The witness described how another woman had commented about how quickly word had spread of the murder.

The witness also told the court that Judy Moran did not try to go near the cafe where her brother-in-law was shot.

“I couldn’t work out why she was walking around near the police and not going to the Ascot Vale Deli,” the witness said.

The witness said she thought Judy Moran was acting oddly when she ran over to police as they cordoned the area.

“She bent over, put her head down and seemed to be crying and carrying on, stamping her feet,” the witness said.

The hearing continues.

White House aide quits over Manmohan dinner crash

WASHINGTON: In a demonstration of accountability, White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, under fire since two wannabe reality TV stars crashed President Barack Obama’s first state dinner for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, announced she is stepping down to return to the corporate world.

Obama and first lady Michelle Obama issued a statement Friday saying they are “enormously grateful” to their long time friend Rogers “for the terrific job she’s done as the White House Social Secretary.”

But the Obamas made no mention of what he had called a “screw up” on Nov 24 night when an uninvited Virginia couple, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, one dressed in a tuxedo and the other in a bright red lehnga choli, slipped past layers of security to crash the dinner.

Rogers admitted that nobody from her staff was working at the gates and check points when the Salahis slipped in. The couple spent up to two hours on the grounds, making it all the way to the Blue Room to shake hands with the president and prime minister.

The US Secret Service, the agency responsible for protecting the president, his family, and visiting dignitaries has taken blame for the incident, but Rogers came under heavy fire for not stationing someone at the gate with Secret Service agents in a break from past practice.

“When she took this position, we asked Desiree to help make sure that the White House truly is the People’s House, and she did that by welcoming scores of everyday Americans through its doors, from wounded warriors to local schoolchildren to NASCAR drivers,” the statement from the Obamas said.

“She organized hundreds of fun and creative events during her time here, and we will miss her. We thank her again for her service and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.”

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Rogers had not been asked to leave her position in the administration and said he did not think the gate-crashing incident played into her decision.

The Salahi episode was not a factor in her resignation, Rogers told the Chicago Sun Times Friday. “The incident at the State Dinner was not a deciding factor,” she said. “But it did show me a side of the job and of Washington that I had not seen before.”

“As we turn the corner on the first year,” she told her hometown newspaper, “This is a good time for me to explore opportunities in the corporate world.”

Rogers said it has been “an honour and a privilege to serve this president and first lady, in what has certainly been a historic presidency.”

She summed up her experiences at the White House in a note to CNN: “330 events. Halloween for 3,000. Easter egg roll for 30,000. Music series with perfomances and the performers teaching the students during the day. Latin, jazz, country, civil rights. ”

An Obama administration official told ABC News that the leading candidate to replace Rogers as White House social secretary was Julianna Smoot. Smoot, currently the chief of staff for US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, was the national finance director for the 2008 presidential campaign of Obama, where she headed a record-setting fundraising operation.

Meet the trainer behind Jackman’s body in ‘X-men Origins: Wolverine’

London, July 05 (ANI): The credit for Hugh Jackman’s muscular look in his recent film ‘X-men Origins: Wolverine’ goes to his personal trainer Michael Ryan.

However, it did not come cheap, the expert charged 350 dollars an hour for sharpening the star’s body.

“Wolverine’s producers thanked me and said I was a cheap investment because the film took 80 million dollars in its first weekend, but it wasn’t the film people remember, it was how good Hugh’s body looked,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

In fact, the trainer is now on high demand among film stars; he has already worked with Lara Bingle.

And he makes his big customers work hard to attain the desired shape.

Jackman’s bouts included 3am starts, cold showers, 100kg weight squats and 280kg leg presses.

He said: “Obviously I have the secrets that got Hugh to look like he does, which is one aspect.

“But it’s based on demand, and I’m in a position where I have a profile and don’t have a lot of time.”

Michael is also a long time friend of Jackman whom he met while working as a personal trainer at The Physical Factory, on Sydney’s north shore, when he was a university student.

Hugh had promised to hire him when he became a big actor. (ANI)

‘Jackson kids don’t think Debbie Rowe is their mother’

Washington, July 4 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s older children do not think Debbie Rowe is their real mother, according to the late singer’s former publicist.

Stuart Backerman, who worked for the star from 2002 to 2004, when Jackson faced child molestation allegations and the infamous baby-dangling incident, said that Prince Michael I, 12, Paris, 11, were far from believing that former nurse Rowe was their biological parent.

“I’m not sure exactly who they think their mother is. That was never discussed [with me]. But I do know that they didn’t think Debbie Rowe was their mother. They were told Debbie was either a friend or a relative,” CBS News quoted Backerman as having told Early Show.

Celebrity Web site TMZ.com claims: “Rowe wasn’t the biological mother, and was implanted, and carried the babies to term.”

Jackson named his 79-year-old mother, Katherine, as the carer for his three children in his will, adding should his mother be unable to look after the kids, then Diana Ross, 65, his long-time friend and singing superstar, should be their guardian.

No provisions were made for Rowe in the documents.

When Rowe divorced Jackson in 1999, she accepted eight hours’ custody every 45 days but signed a deal two years later to give up all her visiting rights. In return, she was paid a multi-million dollar settlement.

She said that she was ready to undergo a DNA test to prove her biological claim to the older Jackson kids.

She also said that she wanted the custody of third Jackson kid, seven-year-old Blanket, who is not her child.

Speaking about a possible bitter PR battle between Rowe and the Jackson family over the custody of the kids, Backerman added: “I don’t really think that Debbie Rowe wants to stir the pot with this custody issue. I think it was Michael’s wish that his mother be the custodial parent, look after the children. And, because she cared for Michael very, very much and, as I said, came to his support on a number of occasions, I’d really be surprised if she stirred the pot here and created a real furor, because that furor would ultimately have an impact on the children, and I don’t think she wants to see that happen.” (ANI)

Jacko’s long-time friend denies being his son’s biological father

London, July 3 (ANI): Late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s long-time friend has dismissed rumours that he is the biological father of Prince Michael II, also called ‘Blanket’.

Al Malnik, who also happens to be Blanket’s godfather, has denied that he served as a sperm donor for the child, who was delivered by an unknown surrogate.

“It would be very interesting to realise that I didn’t meet Blanket until he was two years old. So that wouldn’t qualify as a rippling event I think. Of course I’m not the biological father,” the Daily Star quoted Malnik as saying.

He also added that he would only continue to be a part of his godson’s life “if it were court authorised or the Jackson family authorised it.” (ANI)

Michael Sheen left devastated after Peter Morgan quits Tony Blair movie

Washington, Jun 26 (ANI): Welsh actor Michael Sheen was left devastated when he came to know that his long time friend director Peter Morgan had quit work on his new Tony Blair movie ‘The Special Relationship’.

Sheen, 40, and Morgan, 46, had shared a close relationship ever since the screenwriter cast the actor in his 2006 play Frost/Nixon, which went onto become Sheen’s Oscar-nominated movie.

Morgan was also responsible for casting Sheen as former British Prime Minister Blair in his critically acclaimed film ‘The Queen’, and he was set to make his directorial debut in ‘The Special Relationship’ – based on Blair’s political relationship with former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

He has now pulled out just weeks before filming was due to start, without giving any reason for his decision, leaving Sheen struggling to comprehend the news.

“Michael and Peter have a very successful history together so this will inevitably come as a blow to Michael. Michael now has to get used to working with a different director,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling the Daily Express.

British filmmaker Richard Loncraine, who directed 2004 movie Wimbledon, will replace Morgan in the drama, which is due for release in 2011. (ANI)

Jennifer Garner threatened Kevin Smith for making fun of Ben Affleck

New York, June 19 (ANI): Director Kevin Smith has revealed that he was once threatened by Jennifer Garner for making fun of her husband/actor Ben Affleck.

Smith, who is a long-time friend of Affleck, said that Garner got annoyed with him while he was just kidding about his good pal.

“Jennifer does not share the same sense of humour as me – she did not like my jokes,” the New York Daily News quoted Smith as saying.

“I was picking on [Jen's husband] Ben Affleck and making fun of him because I’ve known him for a really long time – I was talking smack – and Jennifer goes, ‘You know, if you keep saying stuff about him, I’m going to kick your a-.’ And she could – I’ve seen ‘Alias.’ She has a real girly sense of humour and didn’t understand that I was kidding.”

Smith added: “I remember talking to Ben and being like, ‘I know your lady is not finding me amusing. Ben, I’ve known you for years, and you are far sicker than I am!’ His jokes are way dirtier than mine. He’s made jokes to me, and I’ve been like, ‘Ben, you need to go to church.’”

Smith, however, has a lot of affection for Affleck.

“Ben is one of the most intelligent people on the planet. He will run for office and one day be President, and then we’ll smoke a joint in the Oval Office. He’s very well spoken and been brought up extremely well, but he’s filthy,” he said. (ANI)

For White House’s social office, its all about introducing the Obamas around

Washington, Apr. 21 (ANI): The Obamas are out to make new traditions at the White House, and helping them out this endeavour is their social secretary Desiree Rogers, Valerie Jarrett, a White House senior adviser, and Susan Sher, associate counsel and adviser to US First Lady Michelle Obama.
Since President Obama was sworn in on January 20 this year, the social office at the White House has run more than 60 events, with the Easter Egg Roll last week the most recent, a tradition on the South Lawn since 1878.

Rogers accompanied Obama as he made his way through the different events. — from an organic garden on the South Lawn overseen by another Chicagoan: Sam Kass, the assistant White House chef and food initiative coordinator — to bringing in local students on a routine basis so they can be exposed to the magic of a White House visit.

Some, if most of the entertaining is keyed to introducing the Obamas around, with the administration still in its opening act.

“Smaller receptions are a great way to work. Inviting people into your home as you arrive in town,” the Chicago Sun Times quotes Rogers, as saying.
First lady Michelle Obama has already hosted two lunches for congressional spouses and a third lunch — coming soon — will include spouses from the Cabinet and “D.C. influentials.”

How these coveted invites are allocated is “an art vs. a science,” Rogers said.
Rogers said she seeks input from a wide variety of White House top staff, “anyone internally who is reaching people externally.” That includes Phil Schiliro, who runs legislative affairs; Patrick Gaspard, the political affairs director; Chris Lu, the Cabinet secretary; Cecilia Munoz, intergovernmental affairs chief; Tina Tchen, public liaison director, and Denis McDonough, the deputy national security adviser.

Rogers is a long time friend of the Obamas, and she starts her say with a 9 a.m. meeting with her social office staff.

The next meeting takes place at 9:45 a.m., with the entire first lady’s staff, in all about 20 counting Rogers’ team. The group meets in Mrs. Obama’s office because it is the biggest room in the East Wing — but the first lady is not there. That meeting lasts about 15 or 20 minutes. Rogers is also part of daily meetings with senior personnel from the East and West wings. (ANI)

“They are absolutely perfect for each other,” a family friend told People.

“I think they knew that from the moment they met that they were perfect for each other,” the pal added.

At the ceremony, bridesmaids were seen donning strapless, chocolate-colored gowns, and the setting was decorated with bright, tropical flowers.

Guests – including tennis greats Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi – were also treated to a musical performance by Roddick’s long-time friend, Sir Elton John.

Hillary Clinton’s pal Carville would ‘be all for’ her appearing in risque ad

Washington, April 17 (ANI): A long-time friend of Hillary Clinton jokingly said during an online radio show that he would have no qualms about the U.S. Secretary of State appearing in a risque promotional advertising campaign to make one million dollars to pay off the bills left over from her unsuccessful presidential bid.

James Carville’s comment came while the show, sponsored by the Internet domain name registry and website-hosting firm Go Daddy, was being taped.

“If Hillary Clinton would be a Go Daddy Girl … and do a cameo in one of our commercials, I’ll give her a million bucks,” Politico.com quoted Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons as having proposed to Carville.

A chuckling Carville said: “Something tells me that they’re probably not going to go for it. I think the lawyers in the State Department. You know, they like, they piss on every fire. You know what I mean?”

Parsons persisted and told Carville: “I like the ring of Secretary of State and Go Daddy Girl, Hillary Clinton.”

Carville replied: “Look, I’d be all for it, but I wouldn’t write the check just yet.”

The company is known for its racy television ads, including a 2005 Super Bowl commercial parodying Janet Jackson’s infamous 2004 “wardrobe malfunction” that was pulled from rebroadcast. (ANI)

Kate Moss axes Easter break with beau

London, April 10 (ANI): Supermodel Kate Moss has reportedly cancelled accompanying her rocker beau Jamie Hince on tour this week with his band The Kills in Australia.

According to a source, the 35-year-old was due to spend Easter Down Under with Hince but changed her plans as she was worried singer Alison Mosshart, Hince’s band mate, didn’t want her there and possibly getting in the way of the two-piece band and their work flow.

“Alison, who is very close to Jamie, felt his focus would be on Kate, not the tour and she was apparently kicking up a real fuss about Kate’s presence,” the Daily Express quoted the source, as saying.

“So Kate decided not to go in the end because she was worried about any possible aggro,” the source added.

The model has instead gone to 50,000-pound girlie holiday to the Maldives with long-time friend Fran Cutler, according to the source.

She left this week for Easter trip with her daughter Lila for a spa-packed, sunshine extravaganza complete with a butler on call 24 hours a day, the source added.

“She has been to the resort before and tries to make her spa detox an annual event,” the source said.

“But it was a last-minute decision to go to the Maldives again so soon, apparently driven on by Alison’s dark cloud.

“Kate and Fran, Kate’s daughter Lila and Fran’s daughter Mercy now plan a healthy, relaxing and expensive Easter break instead of the stress of possible conflict with Mosshart,” the source added. (ANI)
