Karunanidhi congratulates Sonia Gandhi on taking charge as NAC chief

Chennai, Mar 30 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday congratulated Congress President Sonia Gandhi on taking charge as the chief of the National Advisory Council (NAC).

Karunanidhi, who is also the chief of the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) party in a message to Gandhi said, the poor would benefit from her services, adding that the country, especially the poor and the downtrodden, will stand benefited to a very great extent by her excellent service as the chairperson of the Council.

The DMK chief wishing Gandhi a happy and useful tenure as the Chairperson of NAC further said, this appointment would add another feather to her cap.

The Union Government on Monday constituted the National Advisory Council (NAC) to be headed by Sonia Gandhi as its Chairperson.

She will hold the rank and status of Union Cabinet Minister with immediate effect.
The term of appointment of the Chairperson of the NAC will be with effect from the date of assuming charge of the office as the Chairperson.

It will be co-terminus with the term of the NAC or until further orders which ever is earlier.

The term of the members of the NAC shall be for a period of one year with effect from the date of their appointment, which may be extended.

The Chairperson of the NAC shall be entitled to the same salary, pay, allowances and other facilities to which a member of the Union Council of Minister is entitled.

Under the special provision for a Member of Parliament appointed as the member of the NAC, it has been provided that the member shall not be entitled to draw any remuneration, allowances or perks as such member from the NAC other than the compensatory allowance as defined in clause (a) of the section 2 of the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Act, 1959.

Sonia Gandhi quit the NAC in March 2006 after the BJP- led Opposition alleged that she had violated the office of profit principle.

Gandhi had also resigned from her Lok Sabha seat. But later despite winning the Rae Bareilly by poll, she kept herself away from the NAC. (ANI)

Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in Bihar by-polls

Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats.

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad termed the results as referendum on the ruling government.

“It is not possible for the Bihar Government-led by Nitish Kumar to return. The RJD alliance will return to power. The people of Bihar have welcomed us with open arms,” said Yadav.

The RJD failed poorly in Lok Sabha election in April-May this year, winning just four seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. (ANI)

RPI activists ransack Congress office in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 18(ANI): Activists of Republican Party of India (RPI), a regional party in Maharashtra, on Friday ransacked the Congress office in Mumbai.

The activists were protesting against eviction of their senior leader and former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Ramdas Athawale from his official bungalow in New Delhi.

Athawale was evicted for overstaying after he lost the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll.

RPI activists raised slogans against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and broke windowpanes of the party office.

“I was in office of NSUI (National Students Union of India) when I came to know that alleged workers of RPI are ransacking Congress office. I was surprised that policemen standing outside remained mere spectator even though I told them they are attacking our office,” said Sadaf Aboli, President of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), student wing of Congress.

According to reports, the police also arrested some of the activists. (ANI)

Election Commission issues notification for assembly elections in three states

New Delhi, Sep. 18 (ANI): The process for forthcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh will begin formally with the issuance of notification on Friday.

The prospective candidates would be able to file their nomination papers till September 25.

The prospective candidates can file nomination papers to the Returning Officer or to the Assistant Returning Officer from Friday till September 25.

The assembly elections in three states are expected to be a litmus test for all major parties after the Lok Sabha elections.

The vote-counting will take place on October 22.

It is notable that all the three states that are ruled by Congress, which shares power in Maharashtra with NCP as a major coalition partner.

Maharashtra has a 288-member Assembly, Haryana a 90-member House and Arunachal Pradesh Assembly has 60 members.

There are 2,061 polling stations in Arunachal Pradesh, 12,894 in Haryana and 82,028 in Maharashtra. (ANI)

Patna, Sep 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) celebrated its good show in state by-election on Thursday.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major setback to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party won two seats.

RJD activists gathered at the party office and burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win.

Rabri Devi, leader of opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, termed the results as referendum against the ruling government.

“Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar is fooling the public. The people of Bihar have understood it and that’s why they have rejected the ruling party. I congratulate the people of Bihar. I am sure that people will keep on voting for Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance,” said Devi.

‘Austerity drive may be extended to MPs after an all party meet’

New Delhi, Sep. 16 (ANI): The UPA Government’s austerity drive is expected to be extended to all Members of Parliament (MPs) following an all party meeting, according to sources.

Vice President Hamid Ansari will call an all-party meeting to decide on the issue once Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar’s returns from Rome, inside sources said.

Following the top party leaders’ much publicized economy class flights and train rides, the UPA had requested Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha chairpersons to convince all MPs to join the austerity drive.

The Chairman of the Rajya Sahba and the Lok Sabha Speaker are expected to hold a discussion on the austerity drive.

The move is to promote the austerity comes in the wake of the country experiencing a crippling draught.

The Congress party has already advised its ministers and lawmakers to donate 20 percent of their salary towards draught relief.

They have also been told to travel economy class and not hold press conferences in five-star hotels. (ANI)

CBI records Buta Singh’s statement in bribery case

New Delhi, Sep 10 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday recorded the statement of Buta Singh, Chairman for the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), in connection with a bribery case involving his son Sarobjit Singh.

A two-member CBI team recorded Buta Singh’s statement at his NCSC office in the Lok Nayak Bhavan in the national capital.

Heavy security arrangements were made at the Lok Nayak Bhavan during the recording of Singh’s statement.

Singh had informed the Delhi High Court on August 31 that he would appear before the CBI only after it clarified that he is required as a witness and not as an accused in the case.

Earlier, Singh, had struck a defiant note saying CBI has no authority to question a constitutional functionary having powers of a civil court, without Central Government’s sanction.

The CBI arrested Sarobjit, on July 31 for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs one crore from a Nashik-based contractor to dispose off an atrocity case against him pending before the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) headed by Buta Singh.

The Lok Nayak Bhavan was declared out of bounds for the public and also to the media till 2 p.m. (ANI)

VHP leader accuses Advani of using Ayodhya issue for personal gains

New Delhi, Sep. 9 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal on Wednesday accused BJP leader LK Advani of taking out the Rath Yatra for personal political gain.

Advani, he said, should now think about stepping down from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He also noted that the BJP had deviated from its founding policies and that is the reason for its apparent ‘sinking’.

Singhal’s statements coincide with the times when the saffron party is facing rough weather and controversies have become an order of the day.

The no-show in Lok Sabha polls, revelation on Advani’s lie on the Kandhar episode, Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his subsequent expulsion from the party are the several episodes which hit the party’s image badly. (ANI)

BJP continues public appeal to Jaswant Singh to quit Public Accounts Committee

New Delhi, Sep 7(ANI): As Jaswant Singh chaired the meeting of the Public Account Committee on Monday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a tizzy, and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj has made a public appeal to the expelled leader to step down from the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee urging him ‘to keep up to the parliamentary tradition’, but Jaswant Singh has refused to budge.

Six members of the BJP – NDA combine who are part of the Committee have boycotted today the PAC meet chaired by Jaswant Singh.

This is the second time Sushma Swaraj has appealed to her former Rajya Sabha boss to step down. Singh argues that the position has been given to him by the Speaker and only she can remove him.

The BJP justifies its demand on the ground that if the party had not nominated Singh for the position the Speaker would not have appointed Jaswant Singh for the job.

BJP argues that parliamentary principles require that Jaswant Singh, who has been expelled from the party, has to step down to maintain the dignity of the office.

Sushma Swaraj told reporters that party will wait for Jaswant Singh’s response and if he does not step down then it would approach the Speaker.

The Speaker has already stated that she will go by the book. With very little options in its hand the patience is clearly running out in the BJP. (ANI)

CPI (M) defends Buddha over skipping politburo meet

New Delhi, Sep 5 (ANI): The Communist Party of India (Marxist) dismissed reports that West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was deliberately avoiding party’s two-day politburo meet, which began today on Saturday in the national capital.

According to reports, senior party leaders including Brinda Karat claimed that Buddhadeb had just recovered from viral fever and was advised by doctors to take rest, forcing party members urging him to stay back in Kolkata.

The CPI(M) Politburo is meeting to finalise a document to deal with its organisational problems, which led to its defeat in the recent polls in West Bengal and Kerala.

It is being assumed that topics regarding Lalgarh could be raised during the two-day meet, may have prompted Buddhadeb to give the meeting a miss.

It is also said that Buddhadeb is upset over reports of his successor or deputy being selected during the meet.

Differences between the West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI (M) leaders have been reported ever since party’s failure in the Lok Sabha elections, especially after the defeat they experienced in West Bengal during Lok Sabha polls. (ANI)

Election Commission reviews Haryana assembly election arrangements

Chandigarh, Sep 5 (ANI): The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday visited Haryana and met leaders of various political parties to review arrangements being made prior to the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled to be held on October 13.

Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and Assistant Election Commissioner Alok Shukla met leaders of Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India(M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

Congress Secretary Rajinder Singh Saini represented the party in the meeting and assured the EC that Congress was committed to follow its directions.

Meanwhile, INLD General Secretary Ajay Chautala and BSP’s state President Parkash Bharti said that the EC should conduct polls through ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines to have a fair election.

According to reports, the EC also held a meeting with the Divisional Commissioners, Inspector Generals of Police (Ambala, Hissar, Rohtak and Gurgaon), Commissioners of Police (Gurgaon and Faridabad) and District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of 21 districts. (ANI)

INLD releases first list of candidates for Haryana poll

Chandigarh, Sep 4 (ANI): The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) released its first list of 42 candidates, for the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls here on Friday.

Party president and former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala said the list, includes five women candidates.

Chautala is contesting from Uchana Kalan constituency in Jind District.

Former state minister Ashok Arora has been fielded from Thanesar in Kurukshetra district.

The INLD is fielding 10 youths in the polls fray. Almost all the senior leaders of the party managed to get the ticket in the first list only.

The party’s women candidates includes Kanta Devi from Jhajjar, Swatantar Bala Chaudhary from Fatehabad, Sheela Bhyana from Barwala, Seema Devi from Uklana and Shashibala Tewatia from Pirthala.

The young faces figured in the list are Pradeep Chaudhary from Kalka, Dilbagh Singh from Yamunanagar, Narinder Sangwan from Gharaunda, Ashok Kashyap from Indri, Atul Malik from Gohana, Charanjit Singh from Kalanwali and Satish Nandal from Garhi Sampla Kiloi.(ANI)

Everyone should do their allotted hours of work: Chidambaram

New Delhi, Sep 1 (ANI): Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday inaugurated a biometric identification system in his ministry to ensure punctuality among the staff.

“I hope that people will absorb the spirit and the purpose behind the system which is being introduced. This is a message to the whole country that everyone must do their work for the allotted hours,” he said.

“The Ministry understands that some flexibility is needed but whoever comes late will have to work that much time extra,” he added.

The Web-based system consists of 15 machines installed at various gates in three buildings where offices of MHA are housed, namely – North Block, Jaisalmer House and Lok Nayak Bhawan.

Under this system, all officers/officials of the Ministry will be registering their arrivals in the morning and departure for the day.

There are around 2,700 employees in the Home Ministry of which 1,500 work in the North Block premises. (ANI)

Karnataka Housing Minister resigns following defeat in by poll

Bangalore, Aug 31 (ANI): Karnataka Housing Minister V. Somanna resigned from the state cabinet on Monday following his defeat in the recent by polls to the state assembly.

Somanna handed over his resignation to the Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa.

“I will take a decision on accepting his resignation after consulting the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief D.V.Sadananda Gowda and national general secretary Ananth Kumar and the party high command,” Yeddyurappa told reporters after receiving the resignation letter.

Somanna, who was earlier, elected from the Govidrajnagar constituency in Bangalore resigned from his seat as well as from the Congress Party to join BJP in February.

Subsequently Somanna was rewarded with a cabinet birth in the Yeddyurappa Government.

Somanna who is known for his innovative election strategies, tasted maiden defeat in his political career against debutant Priyakrishna of Congress in the by polls on August 18.

The two-day southern region meeting of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) held in Davangere in central Karnataka on Sunday asked Yeddyurappa to seek the resignation of Somanna.

The BJP is reward Somanna with another post as the elections to the Brihat Bangalore Municipal Corporation (BBMC) are on the cards. Somanna played a crucial role in party’s victory in all the three Lok Sabha seats in Bangalore in the 2009 general elections.

Somanna is the third minister to resign from the Yeddyurappa government during the last one-year. Earlier S.K. Bellubbi, and Krishnayya Setty resigned from cabinet to make way to accommodate new faces in the cabinet. (ANI)

RSS chief Bhagwat says Advani, Rajnath will decide role in BJP

Haridwar, Aug 31(ANI): Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday said that BJP leaders LK Advani and Rajnath Singh will decide on their role within the party.

Talking to reporters here, Bhagwat said, “Rajnathji, Advaniji and others will decide on their role in the party. Everything will be fine in the BJP in future.”

While the BJP had said that Rajnath Singh will not get an extension as party president beyond his three-year term that ends in December, there were reports that Advani may step down as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha but the timing for it has been left to him.

Bhagwat had a breakfast meeting with Advani on Sunday and had discussions with other senior leaders.

Sunday’s breakfast meeting between Advani and Bhagwat was the second between the two. They had earlier met on Saturday afternoon for about two hours at the RSS headquarters Keshavkunj in Delhi to discuss various issues.

Saturday’s meeting took place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP. However, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference that no succession plan was discussed.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. That this is being given serious thought was evident when top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence yesterday morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

Sources said the RSS has firmly asked BJP leaders to end the infighting in the party and reach consensus on a new party chief. (ANI)

Vasundhara Raje to meet Venkaiah Naidu today

New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje will meet Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu here today.

Earlier, the BJP central leadership had said that they have asked Raje to report to them in New Delhi on August 30.

On Thursday, Raje had asserted that she had no plans to leave Rajasthan and would continue to serve the people of the state “post or no post”.

Raje, however, declined to comment on whether she would resign from the post.

She has been asked by the BJP high command to step down as the Leader of the Opposition in the wake of the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha and the state Assembly elections.

In the 2009 general elections, the BJP was reduced to four seats from 23 that it had in 2004 in Rajasthan. (ANI)

New Delhi, Aug 30 (ANI): Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje arrived in New Delhi on Sunday evening to meet senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

Raje is to meet M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday.

On Thursday, Raje asserted that she had no plans to leave Rajasthan and would continue to serve the people of the state “post or no post”.

Raje, however, declined to comment on whether she would resign from the post.

BJP will solve its problems, soon, says key RSS leader

New Delhi, Aug. 30 (ANI): Senior Rashtriya Swayam Sewak (RSS) leader Madan Das Devi on Sunday said he was confident about the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking appropriate steps to resolve all of its problems, including the issue of the party succession plan.

Addressing a press conference in the capital this morning after between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and LK Advani, Devi said: “We (RSS) are hopeful that the crisis in the BJP will be resolved. The RSS is assured that the BJP will overcome all problems.”

“We all think that a large party such as the BJP has the capability of being given new direction and end its problems. Important BJP leaders met leaders of the RSS. Shri L.K.Advani and other senior BJP leaders met us. We discussed issues of national importance, party issues etc. They have assured us that the problems of the party will be resolved,” he added.

Efforts to resolve the growing crisis within the BJP continued on Sunday, with Bhagwat travelling to Advani’s residence here to hold a breakfast meeting.

Bhagwat, who was accompanied by senior RSS leader Madandas Devi, is expected to continue discussions on a new roadmap for the BJP, including a possible change of leadership.

Sources said the BJP will most likely announce a succession plan on Sunday. It is indicated that individual responsibilities in the party would be finalised in the coming weeks.

On Saturday, Bhagwat stepped up efforts to mediate an end to the BJP crisis. He held hectic parleys with L K Advani and top leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi.

There were indications that BJP could come out with some statement tomorrow but Sangh Parivar sources said nothing spectacular could be expected.

Advani is reportedly under pressure from rebels to step down as Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Various names are under consideration, including Arun Jaitely, Sushma Swaraj and Bal Apte. However, both the RSS and the BJP have maintained that they were not discussing any succession plan. (ANI)

Advani’s meeting with RSS chief ends

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): Leader of Opposition L.K. Advani’s nearly two-hour-long meeting with Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat ended on Saturday a short while ago.

Sources, however, did not reveal what had been discussed at the meeting.

Advani had arrived at the RSS’s Delhi headquarters – Keshavkunj – at around 3 p.m. for a meeting with Bhagwat.

The meeting took place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP, a plan that could facilitate an end to the internal crisis ravaging the party’s rank and file. However, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference that no succession plan has been discussed.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. In a sign that this is being given serious thought, top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence this morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj had joined other party colleagues – Arun Jaitely, Ananth Kumar and M.Venkaiah Naidu at the residence of Advani to reportedly discuss a viable succession plan.

It is reliably learnt that though there are no immediate changes in the top leadership, a succession plan is being readied after discussions with the RSS on Friday night.

Sources said that the RSS has firmly asked BJP leaders to end infighting in the party and reach a consensus on a new party chief.

The decision to call Jaitley and Swaraj together to a meeting at the RSS headquarters is seen as very significant, as they are the leading contenders for the party leadership, sparking speculation that a power-sharing arrangement might have been arrived at.

Jaitley looks the front-runner for the party chief”s job while Swaraj is tipped to take over from Advani as Leader of Opposition. If implemented, the party could see Naidu becoming Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, a post currently held by Jaitley.

The RSS has felt that if the factionalism is not quickly resolved, the issue could prolong till the end of the year. (ANI)
