Cong fields Sharma from Rajasthan

New Delhi, June 5 — Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, whose Rajya Sabha term ended two months back, is being fielded for the Upper House from Rajasthan. Sharma had to get reelected within six months to continue as minister. As the Congress cannot get him reelected from his home state, Himachal Pradesh, Sharma is being shifted to Congress-ruled Rajasthan. The party also fielded Ask Ali Tak, a Muslim, and Narendra Budhiana, a Jat, for the other two seats in Rajasthan. The BJP fielded former Lok Sabha member V.B. Singh from the state.

“The party president has been authorised to decide the candidates for the second seat in Rajasthan, the third seat for Karnataka, one seat from Jharkhand and the third seat from Orissa in consultation with the state prabharis,” said BJP leader Ananth Kumar. This means that it will have to negotiate with the JMM. The names of Hema Malini, Najma Heptullah and Smriti Irani are doing the rounds for the second Rajasthan seat.

Jaya Bachchan declines SP offer for Rajya Sabha

Lucknow , May 28 — Caught between Samajwadi Party and expelled SP leader Amar Singh, the film actress-turned politician Jaya Bachchan, 62, on Friday declined the SP’s offer to re-nominate her for Rajya Sabha. The SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav said in Lucknow on Friday that the Jaya Bachchan had informed him that she wanted to stay away from the active politics for sometime. Yadav said that party spokesman Mohan Singh, who had lost 2009 Lok Sabha election from Deoria, had been nominated for the Upper House. Even though Amar Singh, a close friend of Bachchan family, had wished his “Bhabi” Jaya Bachchan well on her re-nomination, he certainly did not like the idea. Sources said that in order stop bickering in her family Jaya Bachchan declined the SP’s offer. Jaya’s present term in Upper House expires on July 4, 2010. Even though the SP’s Lok Sabha member from Rampur Jaya Prada had joined Amar Singh camp, Jaya Bachchan had been maintaining safe distance. Amar Singh had however expressed his displeasure over Jaya’s continuous association with SP. Amar Singh said that Jaya had been staying in a party, which had “humiliated” him. Jaya Bachchan had also not attended the Thakur rally organized by Amar Singh in Delhi in March last.

With depleted strength of the party in the state assembly the SP would be able to win just two seats. Apart from 87 MLAs, the party has support of few independent members. The SP thus would be able win two seats, as each candidate required 34 first preference votes.

SP rewards Jaya with RS nomination

In a rebuff to Amar Singh and in an attempt to refurbish its anti-woman image, the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday decided to nominate Jaya Bachchan for a second term in the Rajya Sabha. The election to fill 11 vacancies from UP is scheduled for June 17.

The SP chose Jaya over veterans like Brij Bhushan Tewari who, like her is retiring on July 4, and party spokesman Mohan Singh. Jaya Bachchan is the only woman MP of the SP and she had stood by the party when others like Lok Sabha member Jaya Prada preferred to side with Amar Singh in his spat with the party. Jaya Bachchan toed the party line in spite of Singh having brought her to the SP and the family’s good relations with him.

The SP also announced the RS candidature of Rasheed Masood, a veteran socialist. The SP can currently ensure the victory of only two candidates, even though as many as seven of the outgoing members belong to the party.

State SP president Akhilesh Yadav, while announcing the candidates, said, “Jaya Bachchan has been a dedicated worker of the party who contributed a lot in building the party and the party is happy in renominating her for a second term in the Rajya Sabha”.

Welcoming Jaya’s nomination Brij Bhushan Tewari said, “The party ticket is not a matter of right, its the sole discretion of the leadership of the party and we abide by it”. The Rajya Sabha members from UP retiring on July 4 are Kamal Akhtar, Nand KishoreYadav, Jaya Bachchan, Bhagwati Singh, Ram Narayan Sahu, Amir Alam Khan and Brij Bhushan Tewari (SP); Ambeth Rajan, Satish Chandra Mishra and Sri Ram Pal (BSP) and Arun Shourie of BJP.

RPI activists ransack Congress office in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 18(ANI): Activists of Republican Party of India (RPI), a regional party in Maharashtra, on Friday ransacked the Congress office in Mumbai.

The activists were protesting against eviction of their senior leader and former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Ramdas Athawale from his official bungalow in New Delhi.

Athawale was evicted for overstaying after he lost the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll.

RPI activists raised slogans against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and broke windowpanes of the party office.

“I was in office of NSUI (National Students Union of India) when I came to know that alleged workers of RPI are ransacking Congress office. I was surprised that policemen standing outside remained mere spectator even though I told them they are attacking our office,” said Sadaf Aboli, President of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), student wing of Congress.

According to reports, the police also arrested some of the activists. (ANI)

Raje misses her meeting with Naidu, sends son Dushyant

New Delhi, Aug 31 (ANI): Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje failed to meet senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Venkaiah Naidu citing health grounds and sent her son Dushyant in her place as representative.

Raje had arrived on Sunday to meet senior BJP leaders in the wake of growing demand for her resignation from the post of leader of opposition in Rajasthan State assembly.

According to reports, Dushyant, a Lok Sabha member and representative of the Jhalawar-Baran constituency of Rajasthan, spent over an hour with Naidu and is believed to have discussed some critical issues.

Party President Rajnath Singh had previously asked Raje to step down from her post.

Earlier, the BJP central leadership had asked Raje to meet them in New Delhi to discuss the issues related to functioning of the party in Rajasthan State.

She has been asked by the BJP high command to step down as the Leader of the Opposition in the wake of the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha and the state Assembly elections.

However, Raje has asserted that she has no plans to leave Rajasthan and would continue to serve people of the state “post or no post”. (ANI)

Padamsinh Patil – Padamsinh Patil Suspended – NCP suspends Padamsinh Patil

New Delhi, June 10: National Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday suspended its murder case accused MP Padamsinh Patil from its primary membership.

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP was facing tremendous pressure from all around over its Patil’s alleged involvement in the double-murder case.

The Disciplinary Action Committee of the party met in the capital on Wednesday and decided to suspend the Lok Sabha member from Osamanabad in Maharashtra from the primary membership, said NCP leader Praful Patel in the national capital on Wednesday.

“We are not holding him guilty. But we would like to keep a distance as Patil faces the legal process. If he proves his innocence we will have no no problem in taking him back,” Patel said.

The party was only following a convention in public life that a person who is facing investigations in a criminal case should not be associated with the party, Patel added.

The suspension comes three days after the arrest of Patil by CBI in connection with the murder of Congress leader Pawanraj Nimbalkar and his driver three years ago.

Akhilesh Yadav to retain Kannauj: SP leader

Firozabad, May 24 (IANS) Newly-elected Lok Sabha member from Firozabad and Kannauj, Akhilesh Yadav, the son of Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, has decided to vacate the Firozabad seat, a party leader said Sunday.

However, the measure will have to wait till the Lok Sabha elects a new speaker.

According to Udaiveer Singh, chief of the party’s youth body, the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha, Akhilesh chose to represent Kannauj and not Firozabad as his margin of victory was greater in Kannauj.

In a recent interview, Akhilesh had said he would continue to serve the people, and focus more on the next assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, where he felt confident of defeating Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), rather then engage in power play or look for a cabinet berth in the central government.

Meanwhile, SP sources here said the former central minister and party’s national general secretary of SP Ramji Lal Suman may be fielded as a candidate in the by-election from Firozabad, which he had earlier represented thrice.

After the delimitation process, Suman moved to Agra city which was declared a reserved seat while Firozabad became general.

Earlier, there was some talk of the party fielding Rajveer Singh, son of Kalyan Singh from Firozabad but now party managers are not keen as they feel the association of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel Kalyan Singh with the party had led to Muslims voting for the Congress.
