Rashtriya Janata Dal celebrates good show in Bihar by-polls

Patna, Sept 20 (ANI): The activists of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) here celebrated the party’s good show in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats.

The RJD-Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) won eight seats in the by-election for 18 legislative assembly seats, a major set back to ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U).

The JD (U) bagged three seats while its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won two seats.

The activists burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win at the party office.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad termed the results as referendum on the ruling government.

“It is not possible for the Bihar Government-led by Nitish Kumar to return. The RJD alliance will return to power. The people of Bihar have welcomed us with open arms,” said Yadav.

The RJD failed poorly in Lok Sabha election in April-May this year, winning just four seats out of the total 40 in Bihar. (ANI)

Patna, Sep 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) celebrated its good show in state by-election on Thursday.

RJD activists gathered at the party office and burst crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate the win.

Rabri Devi, leader of opposition in Bihar legislative assembly, termed the results as referendum against the ruling government.

“Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar is fooling the public. The people of Bihar have understood it and that’s why they have rejected the ruling party. I congratulate the people of Bihar. I am sure that people will keep on voting for Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance,” said Devi.

Congress announces list of candidates for Bihar Assembly by-elections

New Delhi, Aug.23 (ANI): Congress party on Sunday announced the list of seven candidates for the upcoming State Assembly by-elections in Bihar.

The party has decided not to get into any alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) during the by-elections and decided to go it alone.

According to an official release issued by the Central Election Committee in-charge Oscar Fernandes on Sunday, Pheku Ram will contest from Bochaha assembly segment in Muzaffarpur and Noor Alam from Aurai seat in the same district.

The other candidates are Mukund Kumar from Kalyanpur, Anita Ram from Warisnagar, Parshuram Tiwari from Ramgarh in Kaimur, Shah Nawaj Khan from Chainpur (Kaimur) and Murari Prasad Gautam from Chenari in Rohtas.

During last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party contested the polls alone and won two of the 40 seats in the state.

Over a dozen assembly seats in Bihar fell vacant following the election of sitting MLAs as MPs in the last Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress Party, meanwhile, has also announced name of Tilottama Sharma as its candidate from the Dwarka assembly seat in Delhi.

The seat fell vacant as the sitting MLA Mahabal Mishra was elected to the Lok Sabha from Delhi West parliamentary constituency. (ANI)

Lalu Yadav wants to work for RJD’s revival in Bihar

Patna, May 24 (ANI): Having suffered a major jolt in the recently held elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav wants to revive his relations with the people of Bihar and revive his party’s fortune.

Addressing a meeting here on Sunday, Lalu said that he would spend time with the people over the next one year so as to revive his party.

“I am not going to Delhi. I will spend all my time in Bihar. I will visit all the villages in Bihar. I will spend one year among the poor people,” said Lalu Prasad Yadav.

RJD was able to bag only four seats in the recently concluded general polls, 18 less than what it got in 2004 elections.

Just prior to the polls Lalu entered into an alliance with regional Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) headed Ramvilas Paswan and Samajwadi Party (SP) headed by Mulayam Singh to form the Fourth Front.

The Fourth Front faced an embarrassing defeat, with LJP’s supreme losing his own seat and Lalu Yadav’s party garnering just 4 seats. The three parties were unable to retain even half of the 64 seats won by the trio in 2004.

Having committed the folly of not contesting jointly with the Congress party, these parties faced reverses in their strongholds of India’s eastern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states. (ANI)

People consider RJD-LJP alliance opportunistic: Raghuvansh

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): Having faced an embarrassing drubbing in the recently held Lok Sabha polls, Rashtriya Janata Dal on Wednesday admitted that the pre-poll tie up with Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) proved a wrong move during elections.

“People of Bihar rejected the RJD-LJP alliance because they considered it as an opportunist alliance. The break up of the Congress-RJD alliance did not help our poll fortunes,” said Raghuvansh Prasad, while reacting to a question over the RJD-LJP alliance.

While reacting to the question of his joining the Cabinet, Raghuvansh said, “It is up to my people to decide whether I would be joining the Cabinet or not.

RJD and Lok Janshakti who formed the Fourth Front, distancing themselves from the UPA alliance to go all alone in the LS elections failed to put up a good show against the National Democratic alliance.

BJP-led NDA captured 32 of the 40 seats in Bihar, a success widely being credited to the good development work done by chief minister Nitish Kumar in the State.

Lalu Prasad Yadav lost to friend-turned-foe Ranjan Yadav of Janata Dal – United in the prestigious Pataliputra seat by a margin of over 30,000 votes.

But he survived by a thing margin defeating BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy in Saran constituency.

Whereas LJP’s supreme Ram Vilas Paswan lost to JD (U)’s Ram Sundar Das by a margin of over 37,000 votes in Hajipur constituency. (ANI)

Lalu says Congress leaders humiliating him

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad on Monday complained to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh that some Congress leaders had been humiliating him and some other coalition leaders during television debates.

Lalu gave the example of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s statement that the Congress should go it alone in the Assembly elections in the state.

“It is an insult of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar,” he added.

Earlier in the meeting, Lalu and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan complimented Manmohan Singh, saying he had done a good job in his five-year term as Prime Minister and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) would reach its pinnacle in the coming years the way it is progressing.

“The mission of the coalition is to finish the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which it has achieved in the Lok Sabha elections,” Lalu added. (ANI)

Lalu says will offer unconditional support to UPA government

New Delhi, May 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad today said he would lend unconditional support to the UPA Government.

After attending a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Lalu said he is ready to offer unconditional support to the government.

“And, we said this in the meeting as well,” he added.

When asked about his role in the Cabinet, Lalu said: “Nothing of this sort has been decided yet.”

Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Lalu had earlier admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.

The RJD won just four seats this time compared to 22 in 2004. (ANI)

Paswan says not supporting Congress was a mistake

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): After Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday admitted that not supporting the Congress was a big mistake.

“It was not that having an alliance with the RJD was mistake. The mistake was not to have a pre-poll alliance with the Congress,” Paswan told reporters here.

Paswan further said the government machinery was misused.

“There was no Nitish wave in Bihar. He only misused the government machinery for political gains. What results can you expect if the government machinery is misused?” he added.

Paswan, who himself lost the polls from Hajipur, said his party will meet on May 20 to analyse the poll count.

LJP, RJD and Samajwadi Party had formed the Fourth Front but it came a cropper with the trio unable to retain even half of the seats held by them in the last Lok Sabha.

SP has bagged 22 seats and RJD four while LJP has drawn a blank. The trio had won 64 seats in 2004. (ANI)

RJD will join next UPA Govt: Lalu Prasad

Patna, May 17 (ANI): Hours later United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi called up Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad to attend the Cabinet meet, the Railways Minister said his party was ready to join the Congress-led Government at the Centre.

Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP).

On Saturday, Lalu admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.

“Not fighting the elections with the Congress was a big mistake. It led to division of secular votes. The votes which went to the Congress in Bihar were wasted,” he said.

RJD won just four seats this time compared to 22 in the 2004. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi calls up Lalu Yadav for cabinet meet

Patna, May 17 (ANI): In a magnanimous gesture to reach out to her estranged ally and Union Railway minister, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday called up Railway Minister Lalu Prasad requesting him to attend the Cabinet meet scheduled for Monday.

“UPA chairperson rang up the Railway Minister last evening and requested him to attend a meeting of the union Cabinet on Monday,” his private secretary Bhola Yadav said here on Sunday.

Bhola, who declined to reveal the details of the telephonic conversation between the two leaders, however, said that the Railway Minister is scheduled to leave for Delhi later in the day.

It must be recalled that Lalu Yadav had not been attending cabinet meetings ever since forming an alliance with the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP).

On Saturday, Lalu Yadav, whose Rashtriya Janata Dal, faced a poor show in the latest Lok Sahba elections, admitted that not contesting the elections in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake. (ANI)

People voted for development in Bihar : Nitish Kumar

Patna, May 16 (ANI): Congratulating the people of the state for the Janata Dal (United) led NDA’s sweeping win in the general elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday said people voted for development and peace.

Addressing a press conference here, Kumar said the people wanted the development of the state and that is what they voted the NDA back to power.

He said the thumping success of the NDA in the state was in continuation of the 2005 Assembly elections.

“The verdict is continuity of what people of the state voted for in 2005, while giving us the majority in assembly elections,” Kumar said.

Criticising RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, Kumar said the people had rejected the ‘negative politics’ of the two.

Kumar added that the verdict would certainly help the state in achieving what has been lost in the past, and it would witness a surge in developmental activities.

“I want the trend to go ahead,” Kumar said.

He constantly tried to evade questions regarding his future course of action and whether his party would support the UPA in forming the government at the Center, but reiterated that Bihar must be given a ‘Special Status’. (ANI)

Chidambaram loses in Sivaganga, seeks repoll

Sivaganga, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram has lost the elections in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga parliamentary constituency to his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) rival Raja Kannappan.

According to sources, a repoll has been ordered in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shatrughan Sinha has won the Patna seat, beating his rival and television actor Shekhar Suman of Congress.

In Ghaziabad, BJP President Rajnath Singh has won, while Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad has managed to win only the Saran seat.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamta Banerjee has won the South Kolkata seat, beating her nearest rival Robin Deb of CPI-M.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief and Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has lost against the Janata Dal-United’s (JD-U) Ram Sundar Das in Bihar’s Hajipur parliamentary constituency.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Prada has won the Rampur seat, while Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda beat his nearest rival Nafe Singh Rathi of INLD by over four lakh votes in the Rohtak constituency. (ANI)

Paswan terms Nitish’s demand for ‘Special Status’ as ‘drama’

Patna, May 15 (ANI): Hours later Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanded ‘Special Status’ for his state, Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan termed his demand as ‘drama’.

“Kumar’s demand for a special category status is mere drama. Whoever is making this demand is trying to hide his own weaknesses. Development has never been an issue for him,” Paswan told reporters here.

When asked what the Fourth Front do after declaration of the Lok Sabha results, Paswan said he would speak to the media only after discussions with alliance partners.

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar said that he would support that government which gives ‘Special Status’ to Bihar. He also went on to say that Bihar will be the deciding factor post polls, when the election results will be out.

Speaking at a book function here, Kumar said that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, had so far refused to give Bihar a ‘Special Status’.

He also said that the option of who will become the Prime Minister and who will be made Prime Minister is still open. (ANI)

‘Lotus will not be allowed to bloom,’ says Paswan

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The “lotus will not be allowed to bloom” at the Centre at any cost, said Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan.

“We will not support BJP at any cost to form a government and will make all efforts to ensure that a secular government is formed,” he told reporters on Friday.

Paswan also confirmed that he had had meetings with Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Ajit Singh.

LJP secretary general Abdul Khaliq dismissed any possibility of his party switching over to the NDA and downplayed the issue of NDA leaders calling up Paswan.

When asked whether he was still with the UPA, Paswan said: “I am in UPA and also a Minister in the government.” Asked if he would remain in UPA, he said there were two possibilities that could emerge.

“If UPA can get majority, there will be no problem. The other scenario is the UPA does not get majority. In that situation, we three parties in the Fourth Front would jointly take a decision on the methodology of forming a secular government.”

Asked whether the results would have been better if the UPA allies had fought the polls jointly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Paswan said: “We wished all fought unitedly. But Congress preferred to contest the elections alone in the two states. But even then, our results will be good.”

“At this stage we want to clarify that LJP, RJD and SP will take decision as a bloc and not as individual parties. SP is not a part of UPA till now. But it will play and important role in forming the next government,” he said.

Regarding the relationship with the Left parties, Paswan said it was not bad, but cordial.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has rubbished reports of talking to or joining the BJP-led NDA or the UPA-led by the Congress.

The BSP said no secret meeting had taken place between party chief Mayawati and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

The BSP’s support is being considered crucial to both the BJP and the Congress.

Party insiders say that Mayawati would prefer “not to support a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government that would antagonise Muslim voters.”

The BSP is tipped to get around 30 seats.

In Andhra Pradesh, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Friday said it is keeping its doors open for post-poll alliances.

“Any political party has to act in such a way that it should never close any doors post-elections. PRP is also doing the same thing,” PRP general secretary Allu Aravind told reporters here when asked whether it will align with Congress.

Arvind also took a dig at the Third Front and said it was a “fractured front at present as one of its members has packed and taken his baggage out of it” in a apparent reference to the TRS, which switched sides to NDA recently.

There is intense speculation that Congress is trying to reach out to Chiranjeevi to get his support both at the state and the Centre. (ANI)

UPA, NDA working overtime to cobble up required majority

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The suspense continues to mount in political circles on which combine-the UPA or the NDA-will be in a position to form the next government at the Centre.

Key political leaders are travessing the length and breadth of the country meeting each other to determine and convince who will join which coalition or front.

Counting of votes will take place on Saturday, and most political leaders are saying that they will confabulate and reveal their respective positions after the results emerge.

“We are receiving positive indications from various parties. We will not reveal what we are discussing or what we have discussed till the results are out. Once the results are out, the BJP Parliamentary Party will meet and take stock and then decide the way forward,” said BJP president Rajnath Singh.

“Everything is fluid,” said NCP leader Praful Patel.

Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony, Ahmad Patel and Digvijay Singh were huddled in talks till late last night.

Given his good equation with CPI-M veterans Jyoti Basu and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mukherjee may be given the task of opening up the lines of communication with Left parties.

A meeting between BJP president Rajnath Singh and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh at a wedding reception last night set the political circles abuzz. The SP leader, however, dismissed media speculation of a political understanding being reached.

“People are aware that it is only Congress which can provide a stable government. All our allies are happy with us,” said Jayanthi Natarajan of Congress.

However, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar expressed confidence that his party will emerge as the single largest with more 30 seats that the Congress. “NDA will emerge as the single largest coalition with 50 seats more than UPA,” he claimed.

“All options are open. Everything will depend on the numbers,” said Amar Singh. The SP leader said he was in touch with CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury and would be speaking to NCP leader Sharad Pawar.

The Fourth Front, comprising Lalu Yadav’s RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP and SP have said the combine was averse to having any alliance with the BJP as also Mayawati’s BSP.

“Everybody is talking to everyone,” Patel went on to add.

JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav adopted a cautious approach. “There are some people with whom we are talking with some belief. The talks have been ongoing since yesterday night,” he said without elaborating.

“Congress does not use and throw its allies. We had a difference of opinion with RJD, LJP and the SP over the number of seats allotted to our party but they continued to be ministers and continue to be part of the UPA,” explained Natarajan.

“We shall prevent formation of a BJP-led government. This does not mean that automatically there would be a blanket support to a government led by the Congress,” CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta contended. (ANI)

Fourth Front is together, no rifts within parties: Amar Singh

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) General Secretary Amar Singh on Thursday said the Fourth Front is together and there are no rifts between the parties that comprise it.

“We will meet on May 17 to decide on future course of action. However, we will do whatever it takes to form a stable government,” Amar Singh told reporters at the residence of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan here.

Singh termed the exit polls as “politically inspired”, saying such projections cannot predict the fate of political parties as the results often prove otherwise.

“The exit polls shown on TV channels are politically inspired. Only a few people carry out the exit polls. How can they be relied upon,” Singh said.

He further said the exit polls could not decide the fate of political parties already sealed in EVMs.

“The results will be out on May 16. You will see who gets what,” he added.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) President Mulayam Singh Yadav was also present during the press conference. (ANI)

I will speak about alliances after May 16, says Mulayam

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) President Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday said that he would talk about alliances only after May 16.

Talking to reporters here, Yadav said: “I will not speak anything before May 16. I will not meet or talk to anybody before the announcement of results.”

Samajwadi Party, which supports the UPA from outside, along with alliance, partners the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) formed a Fourth Front.

The role of the Front will assume significance in government formation with various exit polls projecting a hung Parliament.

On exit polls indicating poor performance by the SP, Yadav said he did not trust such surveys.

Speaking on party general secretary Amar Singh’s statement that he would retire from politics after the elections, Yadav said, “I have told him that he should take care of his health”.

Meanwhile, Amar Singh said that he would not leave the Samajwadi Party ever in my life. (ANI)

UPA barely ahead of NDA in photo finish: Exit polls

New Delhi, May 13 (IANS) Election 2009 will deliver a fractured verdict, with the Congress-led UPA finishing barely ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, exit polls conducted by various TV news channels predicted Wednesday night.

The CNN-IBN poll said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) would be the single largest coalition with 185 to 205 seats while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would finish anywhere between 165 to 185 seats in the 545-member house.

The predictions for UPA does not include the projections for the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which are together expected to bag 25-35 seats. The latter two are part of the UPA coalition but contested independently of the Congress, while the Samajwadi Party joined them in what is being termed the Fourth Front.

The survey gives 110-130 seats to the Third Front that is led by the Left parties.

According to the Star News-Nielsen exit poll, the UPA is likely to bag 202 seats and the NDA 198 seats. The Congress itself was projected to win 157 seats and the BJP 154. The Third Front could settle with 97 seats, while the Samajwadi Party, the RJD and LJP are collectively likely to bag 34 seats.

Headlines Today gave the Congress and its allies 191 seats against 180 for the BJP and its allies.

The Left parties, which supported Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government until July last year, were projected to get 38 seats, a huge fall from their existing tally of 60-plus.

The remaining seats were credited to smaller and regional parties, including the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

India TV said the UPA will be the single largest coalition with 195-201 seats, while the NDA was expected to win 189-195 seats.

It gave the Third Front 113-121 seats, which would grant its constituents a huge say in government formation.

The UPA tally could go up to 227-237 if the seats bagged by the Fourth Front partners were also to be included, India TV said.

The Times of India projection gave the UPA 199 seats, with the Congress alone bagging 154. The NDA was poised to get 183 seats with the BJP getting 142.

NDTV released its exit poll findings for only six states – Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Orissa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, totalling 196 seats.

It gave the UPA 77 seats, the NDA 72, the Third Front 39 and six to the Fourth Front.

The Congress had defeated the BJP in the last general elections in 2004 and then cobbled the UPA with the support of the Left.

The exit polls, however, were way off the mark in the 2004 elections. Nearly all of them predicted an NDA victory by a wide margin, but the BJP-led grouping lost to a rejuvenated Congress.
