Slovakia’s Skrtel trains away from squad

(Reuters) – Slovakia’s key World Cup defender Martin Skrtel trained on his own on Wednesday as part of his recovery from an injured ankle but said he expected to be fit for their World Cup opener.

Sports

The 25-year-old Liverpool defender, who limped off during a friendly match against Costa Rica on Saturday, told Reuters his ankle was still swollen but he hoped to resume full training shortly.

“It’s still swollen but it’s getting better each day,” he said, shouting over the sound of vuvuzela trumpet blasts from the local fans who watched Slovakia’s first training session in the country at a small stadium in Pretoria.

“In the morning I’ll be training with a personal coach and after that I hope to train with the team. We’re a little bit tired after the traveling but we should be fine by tomorrow.”

Skrtel, who is competing at his first World Cup, has become a key member of the Slovak team due to his aggressive tackling and quick pace, but his season has been hampered by injury after he broke a bone in his foot earlier this year.

On Wednesday he trained away from the rest of the squad and with a personal coach, working on upper and lower body strength and lunging on his ankle, but was also joking around and squirting water at nearby coaches.

Slovakia, competing at their first World Cup, face New Zealand on Tuesday, Paraguay on Sunday and Italy next Thursday.

Inter Milan eyeing sacked Benitez as replacement for ‘Special One’

Milan, June 4(ANI): Italian football giants Inter Milan have publicly praised Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez, increasing the possibilities of the sacked Spaniard taking over at the San Siro.

Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti is understood to have identified Benitez as his “ideal candidate” and first choice to replace Jose Mourinho following his six million pound pay-off as Liverpool manager.

“We really like Rafa Benitez. He has been in our favour since the Champions League final in Istanbul [in 2005],” The Sun quoted Gabriele Oriali, Inter director, as saying.

Mourinho, who led Inter to an unprecedented treble of Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, decided to leave the club and join Real Madrid to fulfil his dream of becoming the only coach to win the Champions League with three different clubs.

Benitez’s six-year reign at the Anfield was over, when he was sacked following Liverpool’s worst Premier League season since 1999.

The decision was taken after Liverpool Chairman Martin Broughton and Managing Director Christian Purslow held talks with Benitez, and came to the conclusion that he had lost the support of senior players at the club. (ANI)

Torres hopes to be fully fit

madrid: Striker Fernando Torres is confident he’ll be back to full fitness in time for Spain’s first match at the World Cup against Switzerland on June 16. The Liverpool forward, who had surgery on his right knee last month after tearing the meniscus, said his recovery had gone “perfectly” and he might play some part in Spain’s three warm-up friendlies against Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Poland. “I will do some targeted work for a few more days and, God willing, be at 100 per cent for the first match,” the 26-year-old said in an interview with Spanish sports daily Marca.

Surprise visit for Germany

BERLIN: Germany, preparing in Italy for the World Cup starting next month, were taken by surprise when six doping testers showed up unannounced on Wednesday. “Six testers arrived today for an unexpected doping control,” German football federation spokesman Harald Stenger told reporters. “We were informed that 14 players would be tested,” he said.

Additional WC tickets for sale

cape town: Another 150,000 unwanted World Cup tickets are to go on sale this Friday, including for the World Cup final. The tickets were from FIFA’s allocation and for all 64 games, including the previously sold-out July 11 final and two semi-finals, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said at Wednesday’s handover ceremony for Greenpoint Stadium.

Mourinho’s passage to Real far from secured – Moratti

Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho’s dream move to Real Madrid is far from a done deal, Inter president Massimo Moratti said on Tuesday.

Moratti said his club’s relationship with Mourinho was all but over following dinner between the pair on Monday but the Champions League and treble winners are not giving up the Portuguese easily.

Reports have said Inter want around 16 million euros ($19.55 million) in compensation from Real if they move for Mourinho given his deal finishes in 2012.

“No, what do you mean it’s done, it’s the opposite. We haven’t even started,” Moratti told reporters before being asked if Wednesday would be the decisive day.

“No, it will take a bit of time.”

Some Inter fans are upset with Mourinho for the timing of his comments wishing to leave amidst their stunning treble success and feel he has stolen the limelight from the team.

The club president had been quoted in the media as saying he had been “taken for a ride” by Mourinho but Moratti firmly denied saying any such thing.

“He achieved all the objectives he had to achieve. The annoying part will be now, the pain of finding someone new,” he said, adding there was no particular name in the frame.

Fulham’s ex-Inter boss Roy Hodgson, Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez and former Inter assistant coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, who surprisingly quit Catania on Monday, have all been linked with the Serie A champions.

Torres to stay with Liverpool next season, says agent

London, May 26(ANI): Liverpool’s prospects of retaining the services of striker Fernando Torres have been boosted after the player’s agent said that Torres has no desire to leave the club.

“For the moment I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season,” The Sun quoted Jose Antonio Peton, Torres’ manager, as saying.

Torres had earlier emerged as a 50 million-pound rated transfer target for Manchester City and Chelsea.

However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez and the club’s ability to strengthen the Anfield squad, Peton said that Torres remains happy at the club.

“Everything is down to Liverpool’s attitude, but for the time being, Fernando is happy at the club and has a good contract,” Peton said.

“Liverpool have not spoken to us about his future, so he is just concentrating on playing at the World Cup,” he added. (ANI)

No intention of playing for England after World Cup: Carragher

London, May 20 (ANI): Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher, who is only making a World Cup comeback because England needs him, has no intention of carrying on with the team after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Carragher, 32, who quit England three years ago, said it will be South Africa and out again and that he only agreed to take part because of injuries.

Relaxing at England’s training camp high in the Austrian mountains, Carragher realised that his time as a player was fast running out, The Sun reports.

“I’ve been playing football since I was five years of age and in another five years I’ll probably never kick a football for the rest of my life.

“This is the chance to play at the highest level again plus, equally important, to work with this manager. Over the past 10 years Mr Capello has been the stand-out manager in world football,” The Sun quoted Carragher, as saying.

Carragher retired as an international because he was fed-up playing all over the globe as a member of the squad. It was time to concentrate on Liverpool.

He is again in the same position as he was at the last World Cup, behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand for the central defensive positions and a reserve right back.

Carragher’s reincarnation is all the more surprising because he wrote in his autobiography how Liverpool was more important to him than England, The Sun reports.

He also told how his missed penalty in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final shootout against Portugal did not matter in the same way it would had he missed for his club.

“The stuff I mentioned in my book wasn’t so much a slight on England, it was more that Liverpool means that much to me. But I couldn’t complain if there wasn’t a great reaction against Mexico at Wembley on Monday,” he said. (ANI)

Chelsea, Barcelona compete for Torres

London, May 18 (ANI): Chelsea is facing strong competition from Barcelona in signing on Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

“The Blues are expected to make a massive 50 million pounds move for the 26-year-old striker this month,” The Sun reports.

Meanwhile, Barcelona is set to dump their 40 million pounds unfit striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich after a season and use the money to pay their bid for Torres.

They hope to pair him with fellow Spanish striker David Villa at Nou Camp. The deadly duo work brilliantly together on the international stage, having won the Euro 2008.

Chelsea”s decision to offer Torres a staggering 190,000 pounds a week and will lessen the club”s wage bill by selling the likes of Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti and may be Joe Cole. (ANI)

Man City’s 80-mn pounds package for Gerrard and Torres

London, May 16 (ANI): To bring two of the best players in the Premier League to Eastlands, Manchester City is ready to give Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland as part of a 80 million pounds package for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

City’s only fear is that the pair will only leave Liverpool for another team in the Champions League.

Adebayor has been unhappy at City for most of the season and Ireland has failed to make an impact after winning last season’s player of the year award.

City is determined to make their mark in the summer transfer, as Gerrard and Torres are proven performers, News of the World reports.

Chelsea is also confident of getting Torres as part of a British record transfer fee; as they cannot offer players in exchange.

City’s bid for the Liverpool duo is ambitious, but they believe they are putting forward a solution to the Kop’s financial problems, the paper reports. (ANI)

Inter Milan contacts Benitez for coaching role

London, May 15 (ANI): Italian giants Inter Milan has reportedly established contacts with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez for a possible coaching role after finally accepting that they may lose Jose Mourinho.

Inter Milan hopes to cash in on the uncertainty over Benitez’s position as Liverpool manager.

Benitez, who has also been courted by Juventus, plans to hold more talks over his future at Anfield amid growing speculation they will part company following the Kop’s worst season since 1999, The Sun reports.

Inter previously rubbished reports they have approached Benitez or anyone else.

But the paper reports that Milan had preparatory talks with the Spaniard.

AC Milan yesterday sacked coach Leonardo after crashing out of the Champions League last 16 and finishing third in Serie A this season. (ANI)

Drogba asks Torres to consider joining Chelsea

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has reportedly Liverpool’s top scorer Fernando Torres to accept an offer from The Blues if it comes his way.

According to The Sun, the FA Cup finalists are ready to launch a 50-million-pound bid for Liverpool”s top scorer.

Drogba and Torres fired 58 goals between them this season.

Drogba said: “Every time a new player comes here it is making the club bigger and giving us strength. If there is a chance for Torres to come he will be welcome – because any help is welcome!”

Drogba hopes to add to his 36-goal tally in Saturday”s FA Cup final with Portsmouth.

He insisted: “I want to finish my career here. I love this club.” (ANI)

Chelsea, Man City in a race to get ace striker Torres

London, May 11 (ANI): Chelsea is all set to match Manchester City in order to get Spanish striker Fernando Torres this summer.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has been given the go-ahead to bid for 50 million pounds-rated Liverpool striker Torres.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “If it was good for the club then we can make an exception to buy a marquee player.”

“We have to challenge for trophies. We have a good squad and don’t feel we are required to spend a huge amount.

“It’s a balancing act between keeping to our strategy of trying to become self-sufficient and improving the team,” The Sun quoted Gourlay, as syaing.

“However, we want to let our on-field success drive our commercial income and any decision about signings will be made by Ancelotti,” he said.

“There is a balance to be had between young players coming through from the academy and those players that we might sign,” Gourlay added. (ANI)

Man City plotting 40 m pound move for Gerrard

London, May 10 (ANI): Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is in Manchester City”s sights.

The Mirror has reported that mega bucks City’s Arab rulers have given the go-ahead for a 40 million pound bid for the England star as soon as possible.

Gerrard’s future has been in doubt because of the Anfield”s financial troubles, and City’s up-front money may be too much to refuse for the club”s beleaguered owners.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez may reluctantly accept a sale if he is given assurances that he will get the funds to transform a squad that has missed out on the Champions League.

But when Benitez was asked if Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres wanted to stay he admitted: “That’s a question for them.”

The final word will be with Gerrard, who is 30 in three weeks’ time and has been a Kop idol since his teens. (ANI)

Manchester United to sign Anelka if talks with Chelsea collapse

London, May 8 (ANI): Manchester United is ready to sign striker Nicolas Anelka if his contract negotiations with Chelsea collapse.

The striker has only a year left on his Blues deal and talks are going on for a new two-year offer, but United has said it is ready to pounce if anything goes wrong.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-time admirer of the striker, The Sun reports.

He first looked at signing Anelka when he went on loan to Liverpool in 2002 and almost got him again before he left Bolton for Chelsea in an 18 million pound deal in January 2008.

Ferguson wants Anelka to replace Dimitar Berbatov and he could get his man for an eight million pound fee.

Anelka was the Premiership’s top scorer last season with 19 and has 13 goals so far this campaign. (ANI)

Real Madrid may bid 30-million pounds for unhappy Gerrard

London, May 7 (ANI): Spanish football giants Real Madrid have reportedly made discreet enquiries about England and Liverpool mid-fielder Steven Gerrard, and according to club sources, are ready to buy him for 30 million pounds.

The Mirror quoted sources close to Gerrard, as saying that he was unhappy at Anfield.

Real Madrid had tried to secure Gerrard’s services three years ago, but failed.

Like Fernando Torres, the Anfield superstar is worried about the future of the club and the direction it has taken over the past season.

He has been visibly and verbally at odds with manager Rafa Benitez in the latter stages of the season, and is closely monitoring the situation over the manager’s position at the club.

Benitez held a meeting yesterday with new chairman Martin Broughton and MD Christian Purslow, which ended in stalemate after talks over the Spaniard’s future.

Benitez looks certain to be in charge for Liverpool’s final game of the season at Hull on Sunday.

But beyond that his position is uncertain, after he failed to secure all the conditions he demanded to remain.

What is certain is that Gerrard and Torres will keep their options open as the end of the season approaches. Neither will rule out a departure if they feel there are not sufficient resources to mount a serious rebuilding program at the club. (ANI)

Man U will have only itself to blame for Premier League title loss: Van Der Sar

London, May 4 (ANI): Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has said that Manchester United will only have themselves to blame if they come up short in this season’s title race.

United trail leaders Chelsea by a point going into the final day of the season, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side clear favourites needing only to beat Wigan at home to be champions.

“You hope, but you don’t really expect anything,” said the Dutchman.

Van der Sar admitted he and his United team-mates did not expect any favours from Liverpool, with Fergie’s men aiming to outstrip them by claiming a record 19th title.

“I think we expected it,” added Van der Sar.

Van der Sar conceded United, who face Stoke at Old Trafford on Sunday, were not optimistic of Wigan denying Chelsea victory at Stamford Bridge to give them a glimmer of hope.

“You want to grab every little chance there is. You never know in football, of course, but it’s going to be hard, difficult and unlikely. But never mind, we have to make sure we work until the end. It would have been nice if we were a point ahead,” he said. (ANI)

Martinez insists Wigan can stop Chelsea’s Premier League title bid

London, May 4 (ANI): Wigan coach Roberto Martinez believes that he can stop Chelsea’s march to this year’s Premier League title, when the two sides match up on Sunday.

“We have beaten Chelsea once this season plus Arsenal and Liverpool, so we know we are capable of giving any team a game on our day,” The Sun quoted Martinez, as saying.

“We are not playing for Manchester United, we are playing for Wigan Athletic and for the good of football everywhere. It is a huge challenge – that would be the case for any team going to Stamford Bridge when Chelsea need a win to clinch the title. But we will prepare for it as well as we can and we will go there determined to do our best,” he added.

“Football is all about dreams and it is a fantastic dream to have, that you can decide who wins the league,” he said. (ANI)

Benitez set for crunch talks at Liverpool

London, May 3 (ANI): Coach Rafa Benitez is set to face crunch talks with club owners, including new chairman Martin Broughton.

According to The Sun, he said: “I have four years left on my contract and I still have to talk with the new chairman, so nothing is clear cut, nothing is straightforward. I will have a meeting with the chairman in the next few days and we will talk.”

“We have to wait, it is not just for me to ask one or two questions. If we have a conversation we will try and keep it private. It is just to talk about the future. You are asking about my future, but the future of the club is more important,” he added.

Benitez revealed this weekend he was on the verge of quitting because of “broken promises”.

The Spaniard has told friends he is tempted by an apparent 80-million-pound budget at Juventus.

Yet he added: “I”ve heard all the speculation over the last two or three weeks and read a lot of news about a lot of things – but, at the moment, we have another game to play.” (ANI)

Lampard hails Chelsea’s fighting spirit

London, May 3 (ANI): Chelsea skipper Frank Lampard has hailed the fighting spirit of his side.

Speaking after the team’s two-nil victory over Liverpool on Sunday, Lampard said: “We hit a low point a couple of months ago, so you have to give credit to everyone – the players, the management, the staff.”

“We dug ourselves out of it and we are now on the brink of doing the double. Now, it would be nice to win it next week in front of our own fans – and we have an FA Cup final after that too,” The Sun quoted Lampard, as saying further.

Amazingly, Lamps was overlooked when it came to this term”s PFA Team of the Season – yet boss Carlo Ancelotti was determined to pay tribute to the England midfield man.

Ancelotti insisted: “I”m not surprised he scored because Frank has 26 goals this season. (ANI)

Downbeat Ancelotti says Chelsea showed stuff of champions

A 2-0 win for Chelsea at Anfield did little to instil any discernible joie de vivre in Carlo Ancelotti, but the Italian coach said his side had shown the mettle of champions with the key victory over Liverpool.

Chelsea will clinch the championship if they defeat Wigan at Stamford Bridge next Sunday after goals from Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard got the Londoners over the tricky hurdle at Anfield.

The win put Chelsea four points clear of Manchester United, who were playing Sunderland later on Sunday in their penultimate match.

A defeat for United at the Stadium of Light would mean Chelsea could celebrate the title a week early.

“I am happy because it was a difficult game,” deadpanned Ancelotti, who has now masterminded home and away league wins over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

“We deserved to win. We did a fanastic job because there was a lot of pressure on us in this game, but we controlled our emotions.

“Now the team is fit and in good physical condition, good mentality ahead of next week’s game. I always said the title would be decided at the end of the season.”

Ancelotti admitted that Steven Gerrard’s uncharacteristic error that allowed Drogba to make the all-important breakthrough helped Chelsea grab the momentum.

In a lax moment, Gerrard’s ill-conceived backpass was intercepted by Drogba, who rounded Pepe Reina to give Chelsea the lead.

“The goal changed the game because we had more confidence after that,” added the Italian. “As for Lampard, he has fantastic skills to move into the box at the right time.
