Barroso: risks serious but EU to overcome crisis

June 11 (Reuters) – European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Friday there are serious economic and social risks stemming from the global financial crisis and the recession, but Europe should be able to overcome them.

“There are serious economic and social risks, risks of populism and defeatism. But I think Europe will overcome those,” Barroso told reporters in Lisbon.

He said earlier he believed that the crisis could lead to better European integration.

EU Barroso says no “conspiracy” against euro, debt is the target

June 11 (Reuters) – European Comission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Friday he did not believe in a conspiracy against the euro, blaming a market attack on some EU member states’ debt for the currency’s recent slide.

“There is an attack on the sovereign debt of some states … which has to be faced with an enormous determination,” he told an event in Lisbon, adding that the response of European states so far has been positive despite some slowness in decision-making and passing the necessary legislation.

“I don’t believe in a conspiracy against the euro,” Barroso said. He said the crisis was giving the European Union a signal “that we have to be better organised”.

“I believe that a better integration can come from this crisis,” he added. (Reporting by Andrei Khalip; Editing by Susan Fenton)

Portugal arrive with Nani in doubt for warm-up

Portugal winger Nani is doubtful for their friendly against Mozambique due to a shoulder injury picked up in training in Lisbon, he said as the squad flew in to South Africa for the World Cup on Sunday.

The winger missed the squad’s final home training session in Portugal on Saturday after falling while attempting an acrobatic shot and causing a traumatism in his shoulder.

He is due to be re-examined before the warm-up match against Mozambique on Tuesday.

“I feel better already,” Nani told reporters during the flight from Lisbon to Johannesburg.

On playing in the friendly, he said: “I really don’t know, now we have to see. When we get there we’ll have to check again.”

The other main injury concern in the Portuguese squad is Pepe, who has been recovering from a knee injury he sustained in December.

He has not played since but was last week cleared by doctors from the national side and his club Real Madrid to travel to the finals.

The Brazil-born defender signalled he could already be an option for coach Carlos Queiroz against Mozambique.

“I’m in the group. I’m here to help and now the matter is in the coach’s hands,” Pepe said as he boarded the plane.

Portugal play their first tournament match on June 15 against the Ivory Coast in Group G, which also includes Brazil and North Korea.

Quieroz returns for unfinished World Cup business

Born in Mozambique and a former coach of the South African soccer side, Portugal’s Carlos Queiroz has flown to the Rainbow Nation countless times but said Sunday’s flight to the World Cup finals was a unique moment and the culmination of an old dream.

“I have no idea how many times I’ve made this trip to South Africa or Mozambique but this is the trip,” Queiroz, 57, told reporters on the flight between Lisbon and Johannesburg on Sunday.

“It’s the trip that has a unique meaning for it represents the start of an adventure which results from a career project, a life project, many years dreaming of taking the Portugal national side to the World Cup,” he added.

The coach won two World Youth Championships early in his career, leading future stars like Luis Figo and Rui Costa to back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1991.

But he then tasted disappointment when he failed to qualify that group of players known as Portugal’s Golden Generation to the 1994 World Cup as the senior team manager.

The finals will also offer Queiroz the chance to make amends for a later World Cup disappointment.

He led the South African national team to qualify for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea but was sacked just months before the finals.

“It was sad because the reasons for which I was pushed away from the team had nothing to do with football, they had to do with things of life, which can happen in South Africa or any other country,” Queiroz said.

“It had to do with people and sometimes we meet the wrong people at the wrong time and things don’t go well. But I kept much warmth for the people in this land in which we are going to play,” he added.

Flores delighted by Atletico’s surprise Europa run

If you had asked Spanish fans which of their sides would be the only one to reach a European final this season few would have picked Atletico Madrid.

Atletico, however, did just that as they progressed to the Europa League final on the away goals rule despite a 2-1 extra time loss to Liverpool in their semi-final second leg at Anfield on Thursday.

The 2-2 aggregate draw handed Atletico the chance of a first European trophy in almost 50 years while their more illustrious compatriots Barcelona and Real Madrid concentrate on the La Liga title after their Champions League exits.

Even Atletico manager Quique Sanchez Flores was surprised by his team’s achievement.

“No one would have expected it. It is an honour and a great sense of satisfaction to be the sole representative of Spain in Europe,” a glowing Flores told reporters at Anfield.

Atletico are 10th in La Liga after a dismal start to the season but they have negotiated their passage to the Europa final with just two victories from eight matches following their elimination from the Champions League group stages.

“I think I’ve not known too many better moments (in my career). Seeing where we have come from, we were pretty low earlier this season,” Flores said.

“I think we have done really well. Three big tests, Turkey, Lisbon and Valencia and we have replied well. Today we got stronger as the match went on and over the two legs I think we deserved to go through.”

A stronger second half to the season has left Atletico chasing a cup double.

They face English Premier League side Fulham in the Europa final on May 12th in Hamburg, Germany and Sevilla in next month’s King’s Cup final.

“I have no words to describe the atmosphere in the dressing room” Flores said. “They were like a bunch of school kids, they have so much pride to wear the shirt. The moment when we went over to the fans after the game was so special.”

The Spanish side will start as favourites against Fulham as they look to end a long wait for European success.

The Spaniard’s last continental trophy was the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1962, which they narrowly failed to defend the following year when they lost to Fulham’s city rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Archaeologists unearth British General’s 19th century command post in Portugal

Lisbon, August 24 (ANI): A team of archeologists has unearthed what is believed to have been the headquarters of Luso-British troop commander General Wellington in the early 19th century, in a dig inside the Alqueidao Forte in Portugal.

Located between Mafra and Torres Vedras, the fort is thought to have sheltered General Wellington’s troops serving the Torres Vedras line during the French invasions, between 1807 and 1814.

According to a report in The Portugal News Online, the General’s private quarters, a store room, a warehouse and a weapons locker were defined during the excavation.

The division had been previously outlined in maps, but this is the first time excavations were attempted to unearth them.

Of the weaponry storeroom, archeologist Artur Rocha said that “strategically, it is one of the most important points within the fort as it offered privileged views in comparison to other war weaponry storerooms and the cannons positioned on the Torres Vedras line.”

“That is why we believe the room was General Wellington’s command post,” he said.

The ‘Torres Vedras Line’ was made up of 152 forts built between Torres Verdras and Vila Franca de Xira, between 1809 and 1812, with the intention of defending Lisbon from invading troops.

The weaponry storeroom that was recently uncovered is said to be one of the largest identified to date.

The good state of conservation that the storeroom was found in has allowed the archeologists to study construction techniques and materials that were used for construction at that time. (ANI)

Blair no more a favourite to become EU president

London, July 12 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s chances of becoming the new president of European Union have receded after he lost support among continental leaders.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was originally Blair’s key backer, is said to have “changed his mind”.

The new favourite is Spain’s charismatic socialist former prime minister Felipe Gonzales, The Sunday Telegraph reports.

European leaders are just beginning the complex horse-trading that will end in the appointment of a EU president and “high representative” – effectively the union’s foreign minister – once the Lisbon Treaty has been finally fully ratified.

That could come in October when Ireland stages its second referendum on the treaty following a “No” vote last year. Pundits expect a “Yes” vote this time round which would allow the treaty to pass into law among the EU’s 27 member states.

Blair, currently a Middle East peace envoy, remains 10 Downing Street’s choice.

A Foreign Office source told The Sunday Telegraph: “The new job is perfectly suited to a big personality like Tony Blair.”

Sarkozy is thought to have altered his stance – partly because of Blair’s perceived “failure” to achieve any change in the Middle East.

He has now switched support to Gonzales, 67, who has claimed that Europe has been “adrift for 20 years” and has become a mere follower of the United States.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose support Blair would need, never has been keen on Tony getting the job.

Sources claim there is little chance of a Briton being appointed as high representative either. (ANI)

Ronaldo’s bodyguards ‘follow him to loo’

London, July 09 (ANI): Cristiano Ronaldo is miffed with the security Real Madrid chiefs provided him after his bodyguards reportedly followed him to the loo at a bar in Lisbon.

The soccer star, who recently moved to Real Madrid from Manchester Utd for 80 million pounds, had gone to celebrate with his friends to the bar.

“I’m not sure how happy Cristiano is about this new attention he’s receiving,” the Daily star quoted an onlooker as saying.

“He was laughing and making jokes – but I can imagine being constantly watched is going to grind him down quite soon.

“A few of the girls in the bar were joking that if they’d ended up in Ronaldo’s bed they would probably have found the minder there too,” the onlooker added.

However, the 24-hour security provided by the club bosses is a precautionary measure after recent incidents when he got caught up in two clashes with a fan and photographers.

A club source acknowledged the lack of privacy, he said: “It can be a little intrusive, but at least these men can be trusted.”

“Ronaldo fever” has gripped Spain and the star’s nation Portugal after his move to the Spanish club.

Around 75,000 Real fans had turned out for the official unveiling of their new hero. (ANI)

Ronaldo ‘dating girl who tried to sell virginity online’

London, July 6 (ANI): Soccer ace Cristiano Ronaldo has found a new ladylove, who apparently tried to sell her virginity for one million euros in an online auction.

Wild model Raffaella Fico, 21, offered her body to the winner of a red-hot auction just eight months ago.

However, despite Raffaella’s past adventures, the soccer ace has now gone public with the Italian babe.

The Portuguese winker even introduced her to Elton John, 62, as his girlfriend after the singer’s Lisbon gig.

Saucy Raffaella, who has appeared in the Italian Big Brother, received an offer of 855,000 pounds for her virginity.

But she turned down the offer and her actions were branded a “cheap publicity stunt”.

“Ronaldo has got an eye for the ladies but could have finally bitten off more than he can chew with Raffaella,” the Daily Star quoted an insider as saying.

The source added: “Last night the babe refused to discuss her relationship with Ronaldo, saying: “I can’t talk about that.” (ANI)

Ronaldo faces police inquiry for kicking in teen girl’s car window

London, Jul 2 (ANI): Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a police probe after he lashed out and kicked in a teenage girl’s car window.

Ronaldo, 24, claims that he was protecting his mom when he kicked the car window that terrified 17-year-old Sara Pardal, who was filming his family heading to an Elton John concert, was sitting in.

The winger faces an inquiry for allegedly wounding and destroying property after Pardal, treated in hospital for cuts, complained to police in the Portuguese capital Lisbon.

“I regret what I did, but I can’t promise that I would not react in the same way again in the same circumstances,” the Daily Star quoted the defiant footie as saying.

“Because when my mother is involved it is very difficult for me to keep a calm state of mind,” he said.

Ronaldo, his mum Dolores, 54, his two sisters and pals were about to head to the gig when he spotted Pardal, believed to have been with a freelance photographer.

He leapt from his 200,000 pounds red Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, and smashed the window near the cowering teen, who claimed she was a fan of his.

“I was accompanied by my mother and he by a young woman who throughout our whole journey ostensibly and provocatively filmed all our movements,” Ronaldo said.

“This persecution caused my mother to be so disturbed and upset that I had to stop my car to try to convince them to leave us in peace,” he stated.

He further claimed that the photographer tried to sell a video of the incident to the firm representing him.

“We cannot make any comment whatsoever,” a police spokesman added on July 1. (ANI)

Lazy Ronaldo loves to be dominated in bed, says ex flame

London, May 10 (ANI): Soccer ace Cristiano Ronaldo likes to be dominated in bed, according to his ex girlfriend, Brazilian model Gabriela Endringer.

The 28-year-old stunning fitness instructor has revealed that Ronaldo is a passive lover who lets the girl dictate all the play during sex.

“Ronaldo lets himself be dominated in bed. He’s very affectionate in bed. He’s not aggressive at all. He lets things flow,” News of the World quoted her, as saying.

Gabriela, who works at a gym in Sintra, near Lisbon, dated the 24-year-old Portuguese superstar for a whole six weeks after meeting him in a Lisbon nightclub.

Ronaldo has had a string or short romances including former Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson, model Nereida Gallardo, swimwear model Niki Ghazian and hookers Tyese Cunningham and Gemma Storey. (ANI)

Austria affirms support for Serbia’s EU plans

Vienna – Austrian President Heinz Fischer Tuesday affirmed his country’s support for Serbia’s efforts to forge closer relations with the European Union.

He was speaking during a visit by Serbian President Boris Tadic to Vienna which came shortly after France and Germany signalled to Turkey and seven Western Balkan nations in late March that there would be no further enlargement unless the Lisbon Treaty is enacted.

“We stick to our aim of bringing you and your country closer to the EU,” Fischer told Tadic.

The implementation of Serbia’s Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU has been put on ice as the Netherlands and others first want Serbian war crime suspect General Radko Mladic to be extradited to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the Hague.

Austria considers Serbia’s cooperation with the tribunal to be good enough to implement the agreement, which is usually a first step towards joining the EU.

Topolanek seeks calm as government fall endangers EU treaty

Prague/Strasbourg, France – Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said Wednesday that his government’s fall will not threaten his country’s ability to chair the European Union.

“The fact that the government has resigned won’t endanger the (EU) presidency,” Topolanek told EU lawmakers a day after his cabinet lost a vote of no-confidence in parliament.

After the vote on Tuesday, Topolanek acknowledged that his presidency’s negotiating strength within the EU may weaken. Nevertheless, he sought to calm Europe with his speech in Strasbourg.

“I would not colour it so darkly,” he said. “I assure you that the Czech presidency will not suffer in any way.”

The premier is to submit his resignation to the president after a cabinet session on Thursday, his spokeswoman said. But his cabinet will govern in a caretaker capacity until the next government is sworn in.

Analysts expect Topolanek’s cabinet to finish its EU term ending June 30 in a caretaker capacity, a scenario backed by opposition Social Democrats, who incited the confidence motion.

However, the fate of the EU’s reform pact, the Lisbon Treaty, may be at stake.

Topolanek said after the vote on Tuesday that the accord’s ratification in parliament’s upper house largely relies on whether he maintains control over his Civic Democratic Party, a portion of which sides with President Vaclav Klaus in rejecting the pact.

“I will do my best to honour my commitment so I do not have to withdraw my signature,” he told EU lawmakers.

The Lisbon Treaty, which would overhaul EU’s institutions if adopted by all 27 EU members in a bid to streamline decision-making in the union, was also among the reasons for the government’s collapse.

A defector from Topolanek’s Civic Democrats, whose vote helped to topple the cabinet, cited his opposition to the fact as a justification for his vote.

This is not the first time a government has collapsed while chairing the EU. Governments in Denmark and Italy were forced to resign during their rotating half-year presidencies in 1993 and 1996 respectively.

While other European governments recently collapsed owing to the economic crisis, the Czech centre-right three-party ruling coalition fell victim to long-standing domestic squabbles.

The Social Democrats attempted to topple the cabinet four times before surprisingly succeeding on Tuesday. The attack strategy led some newspapers to refer to Topolanek’s opponents as “a dictatorship of the irresponsible.”

Topolanek’s foe, president Klaus, is now the master of Czech politics as he is to designate the next prime minister. He has no deadline for doing so and has, so far, declined to reveal his plans.

“The vote gave a boost to the president’s role in negotiations and on the political scene,” said political scientist Petr Just of Prague’s Metropolitan University.

Topolanek said he expects Klaus to give him another chance to form a majority cabinet, an impossible task without a deal with his enemies, the Social Democrats. The premier said he would insist on early elections if he fails.

The opposition Social Democrats would prefer a caretaker government, followed by early elections in the autumn or next spring, which would take place closer to regular general elections planned for mid 2010.

Personal animosities between the premier and Social Democratic leader Jiri Paroubek dating back to the 2006 elections are likely to impair a quick, smooth deal, be it on the new cabinet or early elections.

“I would not expect the country to quickly and easily proceed either towards a new government or early elections,” Just said. (dpa)

1ST LEAD: Czech government falls during EU presidency

Prague – The Czech government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek collapsed Tuesday after it lost a vote of no-confidence in parliament midway through the country’s presidency of the European Union.

The leftist opposition was helped by four renegade lawmakers elected to Topolanek’s ruling coalition in toppling the cabinet by the slimmest of majorities, 101 votes.

Topolanek collected 96 votes in the 200-seat lower house after failing to win over the renegades in last-minute talks.

The cabinet’s collapse threatens to undermine the EU presidency ending June 30 and hinder efforts to ratify bloc’s reform pact, the Lisbon Treaty.

It is also likely to complicate the Czech Republic’s efforts to battle the economic slump and kill the Czech-US missile defence treaties, Topolanek’s key foreign policy project.

President Vaclav Klaus holds the key to future developments. He has so far declined to disclose his steps. Meanwhile, Topolanek’s cabinet is to stay in in a caretaker capacity.

Topolanek said his party would prefer an early election in the summer if attempts at forming a new government fail. The opposition Social Democrats favour autumn elections. (dpa)

Confidence vote session underway in Czech Republic

Prague – Czech lawmakers convened Tuesday to submit Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek’s government to a confidence test, the outcome of which could undermine country’s presidency of the European Union and efforts to ratify the bloc’s reform Lisbon Treaty.

If the government falls, it would also complicate the Czech Republic’s efforts to battle the economic slump and deal a major blow to Czech-US missile defence treaties, Topolanek’s key foreign policy project.

A lengthy debate in parliament’s lower house has been dragging out the vote of no-confidence, initiated by opposition Social Democrats.

The cabinet, which breezed through four such motions in two years in power, has never been closer to losing.

Its fate hangs on a handful of independent lawmakers, who had earlier defected from Topolanek’s coalition.

The centre-right three-party cabinet controls 96 votes in the 200- seat lower house, while the leftist opposition commands 97 votes. For the cabinet to fall, the opposition needs an another another four.

In the chamber on Tuesday, the premier called on lawmakers to act responsibly at a time of economic downturn.

“He who votes for the fall of the government is voting for instability, uncertainty and a deepening of the impact of the crisis,” he said.

Were the cabinet to collapse, President Vaclav Klaus would hold the key to future developments. He has so far declined to disclose his steps. Meanwhile, Topolanek’s cabinet would govern in a caretaker capacity.

Topolanek said Monday that his party would prefer an early election in the summer if attempts at forming a new government would fail.

The statement was seen as a last-minute effort to win over the renegades, as a snap election would threaten their seats in parliament. The next election is not due until mid-2010. (dpa)

Ronaldo’s latest squeeze is a gym instructor

London, Mar 4 (ANI): Football heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo’s new girlfriend is reportedly a gym instructor.

Apparently, the Brazilian beauty, named only as Gabriela, 27, waved a poster of him at an international. According to reports, Ronaldo, 24, invited her to watch him play after meeting at a nightclub in Portugal.

Friends say the stunner then jetted to England to spend 7 days with the Manchester United star at his 4million-pound home, reports The Sun.

A friend of Gabriela – known as Gabi – said: “They’ve ended up dating. He’s fascinated by her athletic body. She says he’s attentive and romantic.”

Another pal said: “They’re a match made in heaven. Like Cristiano she never touches alcohol, and she’s as fit as she is beautiful.”

Gabi works at a gym in Sintra, near Lisbon. (ANI)

150 million year dino discovered in Portugal

London, Feb 25 (ANI): Scientists have discovered a previously unknown dinosaur in Portugal, that walked the Earth about 150 million years ago.

According to a report in the Telegraph, the plant eating creature has been named Miragaia longicollum, after the village it was uncovered in near Lourinha and because of its long neck.

Its partial skeleton includes the only known skull remains from any European stegosaur that had a row of bony plates along its back and a spiked tail probably used as a weapon.

Stegosaurs are normally known for their short forelimbs and short necks, and are generally considered to be low browsers.

But this new dinosaur has a higher neck vertebrae count than most of the sauropods renowned for their small heads on very long necks that were the largest and heaviest dinosaurs that ever existed.

“Stegosaurs are traditionally reconstructed as feeding on low vegetation because of their small heads, short necks and short forelimbs,” said Dr Octavio Mateus, of the New University of Lisbon.

“We describe a new stegosaurian dinosaur from the Upper Jurassic of Portugal that challenges this traditional view,” he added.

According to Dr Mateus, “Miragaia longicollum possessed at least 17 cervical vertebrae, more than possessed by most sauropod dinosaurs, famed for their long necks.”

“This new discovery indicates a previously unsuspected level of ecological diversity among stegosaurs,” he added.

Dr Mateus said that several elements of the skull of Miragaia longicollum were found, “representing the first such material recovered from a European stegosaur.”

“The most notable feature of M. longicollum is its long neck, with at least 17 cervical vertebrae,” he added.

“The specimen here described represents one of the most complete stegosaurs in Europe and the first that includes cranial material,” he further added. (ANI)

Secret heart op at 15 that saved Ronaldo’s football career revealed

London, Jan.29 (ANI): Manchester United and Portuguese soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had to have a heart operation when he was 15 to save his sporting career, his mother revealed yesterday.
Doctors diagnosed the now Manchester United ace with a racing heart. It was then feared that the Portuguese winger – now 23 and World Footballer of the Year – might have to give up playing. ut he was whipped into hospital for delicate laser surgery that cured the problem, reports The Sun.
“It seems the treatment allowed him to run even faster!”, Ronaldo’s mum Dolores Aveiro joked yesterday after revealing the secret.

Ronaldo was a promising young player with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon when the problem emerged.

Dolores, who lives on the island of Madeira, explained: “His heart raced a lot when he wasn’t running.

“The people in charge at Sporting alerted me and I went to Portugal where I had to sign some papers and authorise him being treated in hospital.”

Ronaldo underwent rigorous medical examinations and it was decided to operate to solve his irregular heart beat.

“Cristiano wasn’t very worried – he didn’t take the situation very seriously – but I got a big fright,” Dolores said. (ANI)

Ronaldo fuels fears of shift to Real Madrid by registering his trademark ‘CR9′

London, Jan.14 (ANI): Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo has registered his initials as a trademark together with the number nine- fuelling fears the Manchester United No7 is off to Real Madrid.

The Sun reveals the digits “CR9″ were copyrighted last month in his Portuguese homeland to be used on merchandise or as the name for a restaurant or bar.
Spanish giants Real Madrid – poised to make a world record 70-million pound summer swoop for the winger – were last night said to have promised him their No.9 shirt.
Ronaldo, 23, revealed he was learning Spanish after he was this week crowned World Player of the Year.

He also has a sponsorship deal with a Portuguese bank giving them exclusive marketing rights if he goes to Spain.

His agent Jorge Mendes registered CR9 at the National Institute of Industrial Property in Lisbon. Ronaldo already has CR7. (ANI)
