Daydreaming ‘can give your memory a boost’

New York, Mar 19 (ANI): Want to improve your memory? Well, take a daydream break, that’s the conclusion of a new study.

Msnbc.com reports, in a study, NYU neuroscientists found that constant multitasking with no break had a bad impact on individuals’ brains.

During the research, boffins found that participants who let their minds “rest” after looking at pairs of images could recall the pairs better later on, reports The New York Daily News.

“Our data suggests that if you are not allowing yourself, not giving yourself, a break, it is costly,” said Lila Davachi, an assistant professor in NYU’s Department of Psychology and Center for Neuroscience. “It’s possible you are hindering your brain’s ability to consolidate memories and experiences.”

Around 16 men and women between the ages of 22 and 34 participated in the study. A functional MRI machine scanned their brains as they looked at objects, faces, or a scenic view.

“I have been thinking more and more about our external environment and internal environment,” University of California neuroscientist Adam Gazzeley told msnbc.com. “We feel like we live in an external environment because we interact with the world. But we also have a dynamic and rich internal environment.”

“There are costs to multitasking and not pausing,” said Gazzaley. (ANI)

Nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival begins all over India

New Delhi/ Faizabad/Allahabad, Sept 19 (ANI): The nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival began across India with religious fervour on Saturday.

Thousands of devotees queued up at various temples dedicated to Goddess Durga.

In New Delhi, devotees converged at Jhandewalan to offer prayers prior to dawn and observed fast throughout the day.

“We observe fast on the first day of Navratri. On the first day, we pray for the whole day and meditate on Goddess Durga,” said Madan Gehlot, a devotee.

Meanwhile, at Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, people made a beeline to the temple of Goddess Badi Devkali.

The devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled if they pray to Goddess Badi Devkali during the festival.

“People believe that coming here redeems them from their sins. Since the Goddess Devkali is the deity of Lord Rama’s dynasty, her significance is all the more. That’s why people come here to offer prayers to the Goddess,” said Poonam, a devotee.

Earlier on Friday, a day prior to the commencement of Dusshera, a unique annual horse procession was taken out through the streets of Allahabad.

The belief is that the horse representing sage Vyasa would relate the Ramayana.

Musical bands led the attractively decorated white horse procession organised by a leading Ram Lila committee of the city.

“Legend says that when Maharishi Valmiki narrated the story of Lord Rama to Luv and Kush then this horse standing next to them also listened to the story. The horse in the form of sage Vyasa tells the story of Rama to people during the Navratri celebrations,” said Ajay Kumar Shukla, secretary, Ramlila Committee.

“Naaratri”, which literally means nine nights, is observed twice a year.

The festival lasts for nine days in honour of nine manifestations of Durga, goddess of power, and fall in the months of April-May and September-October.

It is believed that during the Navratri, Goddess Durga descends on earth to rid it of the demons and blesses her devotees with happiness and prosperity. (ANI)

Dolls of Manipur get ‘Barbie’ makeover

Imphal, July 5 (ANI): The native doll in Manipur recently underwent an image makeover by acquiring the features of famed ‘Barbie’ doll.

The Laidhi doll, originally made from cloth and straw, after the makeover is flaunting Barbie’s body parts, but wears her own traditional clothes of Manipur.

The manufacturers are procuring Barbie’s body parts such as heads, hands and legs in moulded plastic and shoes from the wholesale suppliers and are dressing them up in traditional Ras Lila clothes.

S. Gangabati Devi, a Laidhi maker said that even though the Laidhi dolls have got a new makeover, they must not go into oblivion.

“The newly transformed Laidhi doll is a good progress from the older indigenous dolls. But the indigenous dolls shouldn’t go into oblivion just because a newer version has come out. Likewise, both have to be given equal importance,” said Devi.

Customers prefer the Laidhi in its new image even though the new designs are more expensive than the indigenous ones.

The cloth and straw dolls costs between rupees 20 to rupees 500 while the Barbie clones come within a range of rupees 100 to rupees 1,000.

Laidhi makers in the state are confined only to a few families who are fully engaged in the traditional Laidhi making, but there are few other women who indulge in manufacturing the dolls after getting free from their household chores, for some extra income.

“We thought of earning money by making dolls to support our family. We indulge into making dolls after finishing our household chores and at the same time earn money as well. This is very convenient for the women folk here,” said S. Dhanabati Devi, Laidhi maker.

The art of Laidhi making has been flourishing in Manipur since time immemorial.

These dolls have been one of the most important toys, being played and loved by all irrespective of their age, cast and communities.

Initially, Laidhi making was confined to Uripok, Kongba, Wangkhei, Yumnam Leikai and Bamon Leikai.

However, realizing that the craft can be a good option to earn for a living, the unemployed persons across the state started opting for Laidhi making. By L C K Singh (ANI)

Kate Moss axes Easter break with beau

London, April 10 (ANI): Supermodel Kate Moss has reportedly cancelled accompanying her rocker beau Jamie Hince on tour this week with his band The Kills in Australia.

According to a source, the 35-year-old was due to spend Easter Down Under with Hince but changed her plans as she was worried singer Alison Mosshart, Hince’s band mate, didn’t want her there and possibly getting in the way of the two-piece band and their work flow.

“Alison, who is very close to Jamie, felt his focus would be on Kate, not the tour and she was apparently kicking up a real fuss about Kate’s presence,” the Daily Express quoted the source, as saying.

“So Kate decided not to go in the end because she was worried about any possible aggro,” the source added.

The model has instead gone to 50,000-pound girlie holiday to the Maldives with long-time friend Fran Cutler, according to the source.

She left this week for Easter trip with her daughter Lila for a spa-packed, sunshine extravaganza complete with a butler on call 24 hours a day, the source added.

“She has been to the resort before and tries to make her spa detox an annual event,” the source said.

“But it was a last-minute decision to go to the Maldives again so soon, apparently driven on by Alison’s dark cloud.

“Kate and Fran, Kate’s daughter Lila and Fran’s daughter Mercy now plan a healthy, relaxing and expensive Easter break instead of the stress of possible conflict with Mosshart,” the source added. (ANI)

Congress doesn’t need certificate on terrorism from anyone: Sonia

New Delhi, Feb.8, (ANI): Responding to the allegation that the Congress-led UPA government was going ‘soft’ on terror, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday said that the Congress Party did not require certificate from anyone over effectively dealing with terrorism in the country.

“Those who address the people on the basis of religion, those who misguide people by taking Lord Ram’s name, cannot effectively deal with terrorism. The party, which has lost two leaders while fighting terrorism, does not need any certificate. Only that party can fight terrorism which has the support of every section of the society,” Sonia Gandhi remarked while addressing a rally at the Ram Lila ground.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), earlier in the day, blamed the central government of going ‘soft’ in its approach to cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, when senior BJP leader L. K. Advani criticized the centre over Mumbai attacks stating: “It was not so much a case of intelligence failure as governance failure.”

BJP President Rajnath Singh, during the national executive meet on Saturday, had stated that the NDA would ensure building of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, in case the party returned to power with majority. (ANI)
