Rolex Watches: Melrose Jewelers Launches Its New Customer Loyalty Program, MJ Dollars

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Jun 24 (MARKET WIRE) —
Melrose Jewelers (MelroseJewelers.com), USA’s #1 online Rolex watch
retailer, today announced a new program to reward customers with a
discount on their next purchase. The program automatically awards
customers 3% cash back in “MJ Dollars” good for all future purchases from
Melrose Jewelers.

How it works: Once a customer purchases a product from the Melrose
Jewelers website, he or she will automatically receive 3% cash back in MJ
Dollars. It is important to note that MJ Dollars are as good as real
currency when making a purchase from Melrose Jewelers. For example, if a
customer purchases a Men’s Champagne String Dial Rolex Day Date President
for $9,225, he or she would then receive $277 in MJ Dollars good towards
his or her next Rolex watch purchase from Melrose Jewelers. To clarify,
one MJ Dollar is the equivalent of one US dollar, so customers can treat
the MJ Dollars stored in their account on MelroseJewelers.com as if they
were real currency.

“We instituted the MJ Dollars program because we really wanted to show
our appreciation for loyal customers,” explains Vanessa Puzio of Melrose
Jewelers. “What better way can we give thanks to our customers,”
continues Puzio, “than give them a significant amount off their next
Rolex watch purchase.”

In addition to the MJ Dollars Rewards Program, Melrose Jewelers strives
to set the standard in quality customer service. To this end, every
luxury watch purchased from Melrose Jewelers comes with a comprehensive
2-year warranty, a Lifetime Authenticity Guarantee, a full authentication
and appraisal by the Associated International Gemological Laboratory, and
a 3-day inspection period so that customers can feel as comfortable as
possible with their purchase. As the #1 online used Rolex watch retailer
in the world, Melrose Jewelers believes that quality customer service
should be expected when buying Rolex watches.

Pasture study probes grazing impact

A 25-year study on pasture in western Queensland has wrapped up and scientists say they have made important discoveries on sustainable grazing.

The trial was undertaken at the Toorak Research Station near Julia Creek.

That facility is to be sold off by the State Government later this year.

Research spokesman Dr David Phelps says some of the plants survived for the duration of the study.

“But I guess it also highlights the importance of keeping research going for as long as you can in these systems where you’ve got really long-lived pastures and we would have got quite different answers for instance if we’d stopped the study after 10 years – which is only a half or a third of a Mitchell grass’ lifetime – compared with now where we’ve pretty much covered the whole lifespan of Mitchell grass,” he said.

It is the longest trial on Mitchell grass ever conducted and spokesman Dr Phelps says it looked at how the pasture responded to different grazing pressures from sheep.

“The main thing for us after 25 years is that we’re now quite confident that if you graze a third of the bulk of the pasture it is quite sustainable and thankfully that also lines up with the finances,” he said.

“So we’ve made good profits out of moderate grazing pressure as well as protecting the pasture at that level.”

Brits scoff 1,340 loaves each in a lifetime

London, May 12 (ANI): Brits gobble up 1,340 loaves of bread each in a lifetime.

Last year, UK saw sandwich consumption hit an all time high of 10 billion amongst workers who eat lunch at their desks.

Tuna Mayo, cheese, pickle and egg are the most popular fillings, as per a poll by DeCarb – a natural carbohydrate blocker.

“Many sandwiches pack as many calories as a Big Mac,” The Daily Star quoted Nutrition expert Mary Strugar as saying. (ANI)

Spanish Grand Prix tyre burst nixes Hamilton”s F-One champion hopes

London, May 10 (ANI): Lewis Hamilton”s bid for the Formula One title this year suffered a huge blow when he crashed out of the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 2008 champ looked set for a superb second place when the left front tyre of his car burst six miles from the home stretch in Barcelona.

“I was just cruising to the finish line. I don”t know what happened, but just felt something go. I got a bit around the third corner and was thinking maybe I could nurse it back but then the tyre blew and it was impossible,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“I couldn”t believe it – and there was nothing I could do to stop. It happened so fast and I was off into the wall. It”s my third or fourth tyre blowout in my career. More than most have in their whole lifetime,” he added.

He said: “It would have been great points for me. I would have been right back in the championship battle.” (ANI)

Average Brit spends £39,480 in a lifetime getting beers in for mates!

London, May 8(ANI): The average Brit spends 39,480 pounds in a lifetime buying drinks for friends and workmates, a survey has revealed.

That means UK as a nation spends 30 billion pounds a year on beer rounds.

The men, however, take the cake. The survey by www.OnePoll.com revealed nearly a quarter of men go out twice a week, and buy rounds in groups of five. That equates to around 200 pounds a month.

“Buying rounds is a way of life in Britain and these results show us to be a very generous nation. The cost adds up and over their lifetime it amounts to a sizeable piece of their disposable income,” The Sun quoted a spokesman for the website, as saying.

The figures were calculated on a span of 47 years from age 18 to 65. (ANI)

‘I’ll always be Sania Mirza’

Newly wed tennis star Sania Mirza has said she will retain her maiden name and play for another three to four years.

In an interview to ‘People’ magazine along with husband and former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, Sania said, “no matter what happens I am always going to be Sania Mirza. Maybe later I’ll add his name (sic).”

She said they have chosen Palm Jumeirah in Dubai as their new residence.

“My husband wants to live in Palm Jumeirah and I am not fussy, so that’s where we live,” says Sania.

The couple said their courtship developed over telephone after the first few meetings.

“Suddenly we were constantly texting and then we started talking on the phone for hours. So that’s where things started for us,” says Sania.

Sania said her mother would keep saying that she was wasting so much money on phone calls. “I would tell her that it’s not a waste,” the 23-year-old tennis star said.

On the controversy surrounding their marriage, the two of them said it brought them closer together.

“Hats off to my parents who supported Shoaib like they have stood by me even before he became a part of the family. That got us all much closer,” said Sania.

Shoaib says he also had full faith in Sania’s love. “Sania always knew the truth so I was very confident. We were together and surrounded by people who loved and supported us.”

When asked about their busy schedules, Shoaib said, “We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won’t be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months.”

“Anyway, it’s temporary. I’ll probably play for another three to four years,” Sania added.

Sania said Shoaib was more romantic than her. “He is more romantic. When I was getting the mehndi done, he sat with me for four hours because he wanted to.”

On their marriage, she said, “Five years from now when we go on a drive, I want us to be excited at the thought of being together and holding hands.”

Shoaib said Sania was very adjusting, extremely sweet and very punctual. More importantly, she doesn’t get angry, he said.

Sania felt Shoaib was an easy person to live with. “We have spent the last seven days together and we haven’t felt like we are in each other’s face. It’s been very easy to live with him,” she said of her week-old marriage.

The pair is expecting a warm welcome in Pakistan. Shoaib says, “I’ve heard that people of Pakistan are very excited and people are saying that there will be dhols to welcome Sania.”

Both of them are now looking ahead to their honeymoon – she likes the Maldives, he prefers Europe – after which they will settle down in Dubai.

Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ is Britons’ favourite rock song

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Led Zeppelin track ‘Stairway To Heaven’ has been named the UK”s favourite rock song.

The song, first released in 1971, was one of three Led Zep tracks, which made the top 10 in a poll by digital station Absolute Classic Rock.

‘The Who’ came out at the second spot with ‘Won”t Get Fooled Again’, while their track ‘Baba O”Reilly’ notching up sixth position.

‘Stairway To Heaven’ was composed when the band”s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were staying at a remote cottage in Wales, Bron-Yr-Aur, and began to write musical passages.

The song became a mainstay of the band”s live shows, often featuring as a finale.

However, it was never released as a single during the band”s lifetime, reports the Mirror.

But, it was not until 2007 that it charted on download, but its ubiquity among rock fans is renowned, and it became a staple for any budding guitarist.

Led Zep also made the Absolute Classic Rock listeners” top 10 with ‘Whole Lotta Love’ at number four and ‘Rock ”n” Roll’ at seven. (ANI)

Coming soon: Drug that slows ageing process?

London, Apr 1 (ANI): The secrets of a key gene that helps us to live longer and fight disease have been unlocked by University of Birmingham researchers.

With the breakthrough, boffins believe developing drugs that slow the ageing process could be a possibility, reports The Daily Express.

They reckon a drug based on the gene is a real possibility for cutting how quickly the body ages.

Dr Robin May, who led the research, said: “I think there is definite potential, within our lifetime, that we will be able to develop drugs to slow the ageing process based on this gene. Although stopping the ageing process may not happen, slowing it down is quite realistic.”

The research team found that higher levels of the gene – called DAF-16 – are directly linked with longer life.

In the study, boffins found that DAF-16 was strongly involved in determining ageing and average lifespan of laboratory worms.

Dr May said: “We wanted to find out how normal ageing is being governed by genes and what effect these genes have on other traits, such as immunity.

“To do that, we looked at a gene that we already knew to be involved in the ageing process, called DAF-16, to see how it may determine the different rates of ageing in different species. If you have more of that gene, you have got a better chance of living longer. Exposing the worms to a short burst of higher temperature, a quick bit of stress, increased the activity of this gene.

“It leads to the idea of what doesn’t kill you, does you good. If we have some moderate level of stress or challenge, that might be sufficient for us to live longer.”

The study has been published in the journal PLoS ONE. (ANI)

Catalyst simulations for fuel cells may make clean cars a reality

Washington, Sep 18 (ANI): University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers are working towards developing better catalyst for fuel cells in a bid to make clean cars a reality.

If successful, the researchers could make a car that runs on hydrogen from solar power, and produces water instead of carbon emissions.

Materials science and engineering assistant professor Dane Morgan and Ph.D. student Edward (Ted) Holby have developed a computational model that could optimise an important component of fuel cells, making it possible for the technology to have a more widespread use.

The researchers investigated how particle size is related to the overall stability of a material, and showed with their model that increasing the particle size of a fuel cell catalyst decreases degradation and therefore increases the useful lifetime of a fuel cell.

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that facilitate a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, producing electrical power and forming water.

In the type of fuel cells Morgan is researching, called proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), hydrogen is split into a proton and electron at one side of the fuel cell (the anode).

The proton moves through the device while the electron is forced to travel in an external circuit, where it can perform useful work, while at the other side of the fuel cell (the cathode), the protons, electrons and oxygen combine to form water, which is the only waste product.

One of the many hurdles to producing efficient fuel cells for widespread use is the catalyst added to aid the reaction between protons, electrons and oxygen at the cathode.

Current fuel cells use platinum and platinum alloys as a catalyst. While platinum can withstand the corrosive fuel cell environment, it is expensive and not very abundant.

Thus, to maximize platinum use, researchers use catalysts made with platinum particles as small as two nanometers, which are approximately 10 atoms across.

These tiny structures have a large surface area on which the fuel cell reaction occurs.

However, platinum catalysts this small degrade very quickly, which means that the fuel cell doesn’t last long.

The researchers have found a possible solution to the rapid degradation problem-when it comes to catalyst particle size, sometimes smaller isn’t better.

In their modelling work, they showed that if the particle size of a platinum catalyst is increased to four or five nanometers, which is approximately 20 atoms across, the level of degradation significantly decreases.

This means the catalyst and the fuel cell as a whole can continue to function for much longer than if the particle size was only two or three nanometers.

“Fuel cells are just one of many energy technologies – solar, battery, etc. – with enormous potential to reduce our dependence on oil and our carbon emissions. Computer simulation offers a powerful tool to understand and develop new materials at the heart of these energy technologies,” said Morgan. (ANI)

50,000 American Muslims to attend prayer meeting on Washington Mall on Sep.25

Washington, Sep.13 (ANI): At least 50,000 American Muslims will participate in a national prayer gathering for September 25 in Washington, D.C.

According to a report filed by The Star-Ledger, the gathering is taking place in the city’s National Mall area and is being organised by representatives of a mosque in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

The paper quoted Hassen Abdellah, president of the Dar-ul-Islam mosque and an event organizer, as saying: “Most of the time, when Muslims go to Washington, D.C., they go there to protest some type of event…This is not a protest. Never has the Islamic community prayed on Capitol Hill for the soul of America. We’re Americans. We need to change the face of Islam so people don’t feel every Muslim believes America is ‘the great Satan,’ because we love America.”

The Star-Ledger reports that “A permit from the Capitol Hill police, granted July 28, allows access to the area by the West Front of the Capitol building from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 25, but the main gathering will occur at 1 p.m., for the Friday prayer service.

Abdellah said he expects 50,000 people to attend, from mosques around the country, though non-Muslims are welcome, too.”

Abdellah stated the idea germinated after President Obama’s inaugural speech, and was reinforced by this summer’s Cairo address: “For the first time in my lifetime,”

Abdellah said, “I heard someone of his stature speaking about Islam and Muslims not in an adversarial sense, but in the sense of being welcome and acknowledging we are integral citizens in the society-that we’re gainfully employed, we’re educated.”(ANI)

Lewis Hamilton ‘dumps’ Nicole Scherzinger

London, September 13 (ANI): Lewis Hamilton has reportedly split with his Pussycat Dolls girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, telling her he is not prepared to settle down with her and have kids.

The 24-year-old Formula 1 ace purportedly put an end to his two-year-old relationship with the 31-year-old singer, leaving no hope of reconciliation.

“Lewis was adamant the relationship had come to an end,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“He was feeling under pressure to take their union to the next level and he wasn’t wanting to become engaged, get married or think about having children.

“He’s young, they spend an awful lot of time apart and he’s just not ready to leave his youth behind for a lifetime with Nicole.

“He found the tribulations of having a long-distance relationship very challenging indeed.

“Nicole’s mortified – she imagined being with Lewis for a long time and she’s shocked that things have ended so suddenly,” the source added. (ANI)

Noted Squash coach Satinder Bajwa trains poor children

Chandigarh, Sep.11 (ANI): Satinder Bajwa, an expatriate Punjabi, who is a squash coach, has set up an academy for the underprivileged children in Chandigarh to draw them to Squash.

These underprivileged children never thought about playing Squash. But, at the newly founded Squash Academy called ‘Mind, Body and Game – Connection’, they learn how to play it.

Satinder Bajwa, who has been the manager and mentor of eight times World Squash Champion Jansher Khan, has commenced this social business venture to promote the game here.

The Academy will nurture 30 children of ‘Khelshala’, a charitable trust, which serves underprivileged children through sports.

“Everybody wants to help his or her origins or the country that needs help. I am not a wealthy guy but I have something to give to kids in terms of a sport, so I thought how I give back to my country and I do a non-profit programme in the USA called Kids Squash and I thought may be its needed here in India and may be we can help kids through giving them something that they can use to help themselves,” said Satinder Bajwa, Founder of the MBG Ceonnection Academy in Chandigarh.

“You can give somebody money, money runs out but you give them something like this, may be if they are good at I, they can become very good, may be if they are good students, may be I can get them into some international university and few years down the roads, we might see some results which may enable people to help themselves,” said Bajwa.
He says the objective of the Squash Academy is to highlight that through exercise and play one can achieve a healthy body and mind for a fuller life experience.

The Academy will offer members a comprehensive set of world-class facilities including top of the line gym equipment and two squash courts, Bajwa adds.

Bajwa, who immigrated to the USA, is presently the chief coach of Squash at Harvard University. He felt the need to giver back to his homeland something valuable.

Many people in Punjab believe that Squash is a sport that has a future.

“The game is very nice. There is no age limit to play this game. Its very enjoyable and there are no chances of injuries,” said Manjit Singh, a trainee.

“We were little apprehensive in the first couple of days how may kids would be interested but we have had an amazing turnout and its been tones and tones of response from the kids and everyday more and more kids wanna come and play and its wonderful to see excitement and eagerness of all the kids ibn the village to come and play,” said Elizabeth Chaplin, a trainer in Massachusetts, US.

The MBG – Connection and Khelshala are a lifetime dream of Bajwa who also funded ‘kids squash’, a U.S.-based non-profit organization that promotes well-being through sports for children of all backgrounds.

Khelshala will also have an educational component as well as it will aim to leverage sports to help kids attain scholarships to private schools. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Machines can’t recognise images like humans as yet

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): Computers might have reached a point where they can replicate many aspects of human behaviour, but still they cannot recognize distorted images like humans do, says a team of Penn State researchers.

James Z. Wang, along with Ritendra Datta and Jia Li at Penn State, explored the difference in human and machine recognition of visual concepts under various image distortions.

“Our goal is to seek a better understanding of the fundamental differences between humans and machines and utilize this in developing automated methods for distinguishing humans and robotic programs,” said Wang.

The researchers used those differences to design image-based CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart), visual devices used to prevent automated network attacks.

Many e-commerce web sites use CAPTCHAs, which are randomly generated sets of words that a user types in a box provided in order to complete a registration or purchasing process. This is done to verify that the user is human and not a robotic program.

In the study, a demonstration program with an image-based CAPTCHA called IMAGINATION was presented on imagination.alipr.com.

Both humans and robotic programs were observed using the CAPTCHA.

While the scope of the human users was limited, the results of the study proved that robotic programs were not able to recognize distorted images.

In other words, a computer recognition program had to rely on an accurate picture, while humans were able to tell what the picture was even though it was distorted.

Wang said that he is hoping to work with developers in the future to make IMAGINATION a CAPTCHA program that Web sites can use to strengthen the prevention of automated network attacks.

Although machine recognizability does not exceed human recognizability at this time, Wang is optimistic that it would be possible in the future.

“We are seeing more intelligently designed computer programs that can harness a large volume of online data, much more than a typical human can experience in a lifetime, for knowledge generation and automatic recognition. If certain obstacles, which many believe to be insurmountable, such as scalability and image representation, can be overcome, it is possible that one day machine recognizability can reach that of humans,” said Wang.

The study has been presented in the latest issue of IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. (ANI)

Brit drinkers splash £39,480 on drinks for friends!

London, Sept 4 (ANI): British drinkers splash out an average of 39,480 pounds buying rounds for their friends over a lifetime, according to a new survey.

The study involving 4000 Britons adults revealed that they spend around 840 pounds a year on drinks for their friends, partners and work colleagues.

It also showed that an average Briton goes out socialising to bars, pubs and restaurants three times a month, despite the ongoing credit crisis.

About a quarter of men go out twice a week, and buy rounds in groups of five – which equates to 200 pounds a month.

They are likely to spend over 13 pounds on one round alone, and on average will buy 1.8 rounds in an evening out,

“Buying rounds is a way of life in Britain and these results show us to be a very generous nation,” the Telegraph quoted a spokesman for OnePoll, which conducted the survey as saying.

“The cost of buying a round soon adds up and over their lifetime it amounts to a sizeable piece of their disposable income,” he added. (ANI)

ISRO formally calls off India’s first moon mission

Panaji. Aug 31 (ANI): Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has formally called off Chandrayaan-1, India’s first moon mission, after it lost contact with the craft. ink with the Chandrayaan-1 craft broke down early on Saturday.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said, “The net result is that the lunar has lost radio contact with the craft and we are not receiving any signal. So we had to terminate the mission with this sequence…we made all attempts but our attempts were not succeed.”

Nair claimed that though the moon mission terminated much before its two-year lifetime it was a great success.

“About 95 percent of the objectives of the scientific experiments have been completed and we have more than 70,000 images of the moon, especially the most critical regions are in our custody,” he added.

The 79-million dollar mission was launched amid national euphoria last October, putting India in the Asian space race alongside China.

A probe vehicle landed on the moon a month later and sent back images of the lunar surface.

But a critical sensor in the main craft, orbiting the moon, malfunctioned in July, raising fears that the two-year mission might have to be curtailed.

One of the mission’s main aims was to look for Helium 3, an isotope which is very rare on earth but could be an energy source in the future in nuclear fusion.

ISRO has plans to send a manned mission to space in four years’ time and eventually on to Mars. (ANI)

Man-made volcanoes may cool Earth by reflecting sunlight back into space

London, August 30 (ANI): The Royal Society in London seems to be convinced that man-made volcanoes can help stave off climate change, as it is backing research into simulated volcanic eruptions that will spray millions of tons of dust into the air to cool the Earth.

This week, the society will call for a global programme of studies into geo-engineering, which can help devise new ways to manipulate the planet’s climate to counteract global warming.

It believes that pouring sulphur-based particles into the upper atmosphere may help keep the planet cool.

Ken Caldeira, an earth scientist at Stanford University, California, and a member of a Royal Society working group on geo-engineering, said that dust sprayed into the stratosphere in volcanic eruptions could cool the Earth by reflecting light back into space.

“If I had a dollar for geo-engineering research I would put 90 cents of it into stratospheric aerosols and 10 cents into everything else,” Times Online quoted Caldeira as saying.

The intervention by the Royal Society comes amid tension ahead of the United Nations-sponsored climate talks in Copenhagen in December to agree global cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.

The Royal Society’s decision to take geo-engineering seriously is a measure of the desperation felt by scientists about climate change.

Brian Launder, a professor at Manchester University, who is also on the working group, recently said that without CO2 reductions or geo-engineering “civilisation as we know it will end within our grandchildren’s lifetime”.

“The only rational scheme is to reduce the sunlight reaching Earth and to reflect back more of it,” he said.

The society’s report is expected to draw partly on research by Tim Lenton, professor of earth sciences at the University of East Anglia, who has just completed the first big comparison of different forms of geo-engineering.

“We estimate that 1.5-5m tons of sulphate particles could be released (artificially) into the stratosphere each year on a recurring basis. This is quite a small amount, which makes it potentially economically viable, but it could reduce global temperature rise by up to 2C,” said Lenton. (ANI)
