For sale – New Zealand village with pub, 40 people

June 25 (Reuters Life) – Stressed-out city executives looking to get away from it all have the chance to buy their own rural village in New Zealand, complete with a pub and population of 40.

Lifestyle

Otira, a hamlet on the rainy west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is on the market for $NZ1 million ($715,000).

Current owners Bill and Christine Hennah bought the rundown village in 1998 after passing through and “feeling sorry for it,” Christchurch-based newspaper The Press reported on Friday.

They paid $NZ80,000 ($56,000) for the hotel or pub, school, railway station, town hall and 18 houses making up the village near the Arthur’s Pass National Park that dates back to 1923.

The village developed when the Otira railway tunnel was opened, and during its heyday was home to about 600 workers and their families.

But the couple, now aged in their 60s, say they no longer have the energy to run the hotel. They are asking $NZ350,000 for the hotel or $NZ1 million for the whole lot.

“We need someone to build it up again. There is a lot of potential and opportunity,” Christine Hennah told The Press.

Australia launches anti-doping campaign aimed at young athletes

(Reuters Life!) – A hard-hitting poster showing an athlete injecting a prohibited substance is at the center of a new Australian anti-doping awareness campaign, with the warning “You can never win your reputation back.”

Lifestyle

Australian Sports Minister Kate Ellis Monday launched the campaign aimed at both young, up-and-coming athletes and elite sportsmen and women.

“This confronting poster sends the important message to athletes that doping is never okay and that your reputation, once lost, is something you can never get back,” said Ellis.

“Doping can ruin an athlete’s health but it can be just as damaging for an athlete’s reputation and ultimately has the potential to end careers.”

Australian Olympic and World Champion rower Amber Halliday and Paralympic swimmer and world record holder Matthew Cowdrey are among several athletes named as Campaign Ambassadors.

“I can relate to the pressure young athletes are under while trying to carve out a career in sport,” said Halliday, who has moved into cycling following her rowing career.

“This campaign highlights the fact that no matter how good athletes get, no matter how many races they win or goals they score, it will all come crashing down if they have cheated through doping.”

The “You can never win your reputation back” campaign will run through June and July and encourages Australians to visit the anti-doping website (www.asada.gov.au).

LiLo denies she”s addicted to drink and drugs

London, May 10 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan has hit back at rumours that she”s addicted to drink and drugs.

In a TV interview, the Mean Girls star sat alongside her mum Dina to set the record straight about the recent rumours.

The actress’ estranged father Michael recently claimed that his daughter was hooked on prescription drugs.

However, Lindsay has slammed his claims, insisting she has turned her life around, reports the Sun.

She told Entertainment Tonight: “I””m OK… when did I stop being OK?

“I am fine. I am happy and I am working. And I””m good.

“I””m surrounded by great friends now. You know, I have weeded out a lot of people in my life.

“I don””t (have substance abuse problems). I work. And if I go out with my friends, I””m 23, and I””m allowed to do that. I don””t go out when I””m working,” she added.

She has also blamed false claims about her lifestyle for lack of work.

“It distracts from me getting jobs. That””s when it hurts the most – especially when it””s not true,” she said. (ANI)

Gerrard’s wife warns fellow WAGs to ‘stop bitching about her marriage’

London, May 7 (ANI): Footballer Steven Gerrard’s wife Alex has warned fellow WAGs to ‘stop bitching about her marriage.’

English model Curran dismissed rumours that her relationship with Gerrard was on the rocks, when she arrived at a showbiz event with her hubby, reports The Daily Star.

Her friends have said that she is annoyed with her fellow WAGs who fuelled the split rumours.

“Quite a lot of other WAGs are bitching behind Alex’s back. She is just ignoring them but she’s not happy with it. Alex hates being called a WAG and hates what they stand for,” a close friend said.

“She is a model and journalist and doesn’t get the mentality that WAGs should stay at home or just go to lunch,” the friend added.

“They have nothing better to do than gossip and be bitchy. But when they meet it’s all air kisses and admiration for each other’s latest outfits. It’s all so false. Alex doesn’t like that lifestyle and doesn’t want any part of it,” the friend further said. (ANI)

Jack Tweed ‘sleeps with glamour model after a night out’

London, May 03 (ANI): Just days after vowing to change his wild ways, Jack Tweed has ended up sleeping with a scantily clad model it has emerged.

Tweed went to bed with the glamour model at a pal’s luxury flat in London’s swanky Mayfair soon after he made an emotional visit to dead wife Jade Goody’s grave to apologise for his bedroom frolics, reports the Daily Star.

Jack has publicly admitted to being a “fool” and vowed to change his raunchy lifestyle so that he could regain access to Jade’s children, Bobby, six, and Freddy, five.

But he slipped between the sheets with a glamour model after yet another booze orgy on the London club circuit.

A source said: “He’s like: ‘I’ve been in jail for how long?

“I haven’t had sex in ages and all these birds wanna sh*g me. I’m a 22-year-old guy and I want to get on with my life.

“He is going to play the field. This is the first girl since the court case, but it won’t be the last. I’m sure there’ll just be loads now,” the source added.

Jack’s spokesman said: “Jack was out with a group of eight people. They all went back to a friend’s house and slept over.” (ANI)

Malaysian politician questions effectiveness of religious raids

Kuantan, Apr 27 (ANI): In the wake of the shocking suicide by a Malay teenager, who flung himself off the fifth floor in a bid to evade officers conducting religious raids, Malaysian politician Adnan Yaakob has questioned the effectiveness of such exercises.

He believes that were the people targeted by these raids alive, they would at least have a chance of reforming themselves and adopting a lifestyle that upholds Islamic values.

“I think it is better to give them guidance rather than raiding a place. Raids will cause the person to panic and do something irrational like jumping off a building,” Adnan told the State Assembly at Kuantan, The Star reports.

He also raised the issue of teenage suicides caused by depression and urged teachers to be more observant and counsel those susceptible. (ANI)

Microsoft pulls Kin advert over ”sexting” allegations

Sydney, April 19 (ANI): Microsoft has announced its decision to pull a controversial advert for its new Kin line of phones after complaints emerged that it promotes “sexting” among teens.

The advert shows a man in a club taking a photo under his T-shirt using a Kin phone and sharing it with his friends. Thereafter, a young woman is shown receiving the message with a smile on her face.

Many, including James Steyer, chief executive officer of the non-profit Common Sense Media, have criticised the advert saying it is “absolutely baffling” that Microsoft had chosen to promote its Kin phones by glorifying sexting.

“It is both irresponsible and outrageous that an industry leader like Microsoft would take a form of digital abuse and position it as ”cool and hip” in order to sell a new product that is directly targeted to a teen audience,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Steyer, as saying.

And now Microsoft has issued a statement saying the company views the issue of sexting “very seriously” and had never intended to promote it in any way. It said the advert was meant to capture “the energy and playfulness of the generation of social communicators”.

Microsoft said: “We have received feedback that one of the Kin lifestyle videos has a scene that did not come across in the spirit it was intended.

“Upon further review we have acknowledged that and since removed the clip.” (ANI)

Was LSD an influence on Doctor Who?

LONDON (Reuters Life!) – The regenerations of Time Lord Doctor Who were modeled on the “horrifying” side effects of drug-induced trips, according to archived documents published by the BBC.

Lifestyle

Doctor Who, an eccentric TV hero who has fearlessly fought Daleks and Cybermen with the help of his Tardis time machine in the shape of a 1950s London police box, has become a classic figure since the show first aired in the 1960s.

The regenerations started in 1966 to allow writers to replace the lead actor. The series recently saw an 11th actor, Matt Smith, take on the role.

A BBC memo outlining the character describes his metaphysical change over the years as a “horrifying experience.”

“It as if he has had the L.S.D. drug and instead of experiencing the kicks, he has the hell and dank horror which can be its effect,” it says.

Lifetime Family Travel for 10 Cents on the Dollar a Reality with Lifetime Leisure Experiences

Insider Deals and Worldwide Connections from Travel Lifestyle Consultant
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.–(Business Wire)–
Luxury vacations for life for 10 cents on the dollar? That`s what Chris Klesh,
(http://www.lifetimeleisure.net) luxury travel expert and lifestyle consultant,
provides travelers.

Klesh is president and CEO of Lifetime Leisure Experiences and a retired
marketing executive for AT&T. The travel expert utilizes 20 years expertise and
resources to counsel travelers with free presentations to groups ranging from
travel, ski and country clubs, to active retirement communities interested in
travel, young families searching for affordable vacation solutions, and
financial advisors and planners who consult individuals on long term needs.
Klesh`s presentation is informative, straight-forward, factual, helpful and
entertaining.

Klesh offers vacationers the opportunity to renew, relax and create lifelong
memories on an annual basis. He doesn’t take names, phone numbers or email
addresses to add to a list for future solicitation. “I don`t need to. The people
interested about luxury travel will want to talk to me,” said Klesh. “I can help
folks seriously looking for a long range vacation strategy for a fraction of the
price.”

For instance, for the same price as a 450 sq. ft. hotel room, clients can
vacation in 1,400 sq. ft. units complete with a full kitchen, multiple bedrooms
and bathrooms. And they only pay a fraction for golf, skiing and other
activities. People who thought annual vacations were impossible are now staying
at quality resorts annually.

Research indicates that vacations reduce the risk of heart disease, depression,
and a host of other ills – and even slow the aging process. Two vacations a year
can cut a person`s risk of heart attack by 50 percent (Conde Nast, Sept. 2009).
Furthermore, today`s hectic lifestyle can take its toll on relationships as
evidenced by high divorce rates in the United States. According to a recent
survey by VacationBetter.org, 72% of respondents listed time away with their
spouse as one of the best ways to reconnect and rekindle romance within the
marriage (http://www.vacationbetter.org/why-vacation). In the process, travel
helps bring families together and represents a healthier lifestyle.

With a focus on making travel dreams come true, Klesh shares his inside
knowledge and passion for traveling. What started as a hobby became a passionate
profession as he regularly travels 50 weeks a year.

According to Mike Novatka, Palm Beach, FL, “Klesh is true to his word. Before
I`d pay rack rate at hotels. Now I`m able to stay in a 1,200 square-foot,
2-bedroom luxury condo for a week at $1,400 total overlooking central park in
New York. Plus he arranged for family tickets to Mets games and attend sold-out
Broadway shows, all for a fraction of the cost. The condo was awesome, the
services matched what we were looking for with free breakfasts daily, evening
cocktail receptions and an ideal location. He’s helped my family of eight afford
luxurious vacations in New York, Colorado, Utah, and Lake Tahoe for savings up
to 90 percent off of what it would normally cost.”

Klesh was a corporate marketing manager at AT&T (formally BellSouth) for more
than 30 years and has a Bachelor of Science from Indiana University and a M.B.A.
from Fairleigh Dickinson University (Teaneck, NJ). He considers himself a
`cultural jock` with hobbies ranging from skiing, music, theater, tennis,
golfing, boating, kayaking, mountain biking, traveling and reading. Klesh lives
primarily in South Lake Tahoe and Palm Beach, Florida, and is a member of the
Florida Speakers Association. In 2002, he transformed those hobbies into a
fervent business, Lifetime Leisure Experiences. He culled inside information
from sources developed over the years into a bona fide system of practical every
day use that hundreds of clients are currently utilizing to each save thousands
of dollars annually.

U.S. workers more confident of jobs, higher pay

(Reuters) – Increasingly confident about the job market, U.S. workers expect higher pay in a economic recovery or many of them will be hunting for new jobs, according to research released on Friday.

U.S. | Lifestyle

Workers are feeling more optimistic about the economy and job market than they have since December 2008, according to a survey conducted for www.Glassdoor.com, an online job information site, in late March.

“This is a precursor to consumer confidence,” said Rusty Rueff, Glassdoor’s career and workplace expert. “You don’t go spend money, you don’t go take a vacation, you don’t buy the car unless you feel like over the next six months or 12 months, you’re not going to have to worry about your job security and your pay security.”

Fewer than one in five workers are concerned about being laid off in the next six months, a rate that has fallen for five consecutive quarters, the survey said.

If they were to lose their jobs, 38 percent of workers think they could find a job matching their experience and pay in six months. In the previous quarter, the fourth quarter of 2009, 33 percent thought that was likely, it said.

Yet 76 percent of employees say they are willing to take a pay cut if faced with losing their jobs — from about half who would take a cut of less than 10 percent to one in 20 workers who would take a cut of more than a third.

“Their confidence is coming back around where the job market is going to be,” Rueff said. “But the reality is they’re probably looking left and right at former co-workers and friends who are in the job market and saying, ‘Look how long it’s taken them to find another job and how tough it is.’”

More than a quarter of workers whose companies have made structural changes in the last six months said their pay was cut, the survey said. That rate has held roughly steady over the past five quarters, Glassdoor.com said.

“Companies realize that people are willing to take a cut versus any more restructurings happening, and they are capitalizing on that. There’s nothing wrong with that until there comes some kind of breaking point,” Rueff said..

“There will be a point where in this job market, the churn of people starting to get up and leave and go other places will start to happen.”

If there is an economic recovery, 21 percent of employees said they will be looking for a new job, roughly half expect a raise, 22 percent expect a bonus and 11 percent expect a promotion, Glassdoor.com said.

Its online site offers information on salaries, jobs and interview questions, contributed anonymously, about several thousand companies. Its quarterly survey measures job security, salary expectations, rehire probability and company outlook as indicators of employee confidence.

Harris Interactive conducted the survey for Glassdoor.com from March 19 to 23, 2010 online among 2,315 adults. The data were weighted to be representative of the U.S. population on the basis of region, age within gender, education, household income, race or ethnicity and propensity to be online, and no estimates of sampling errors could be calculated, it said.

I’m not going to end up like my mum: Peaches Geldof

London, March 29 (ANI): Peaches Geldof has blasted claims that she faces the seedy drug death as her mum.

Friends of the socialite have expressed their fear for her heading for early grave like her mother, Paula Yates, who died of an overdose of drugs 10 years ago, reports the Daily Star.

However, Geldof has denied she is on a downward spiral.

“I’m not going to end up like my mum,” Peaches told friends.

Author and family friend Gerry Agar, 49, who was Paula’s friend, said that the same fake friends and ‘toxic’ lifestyle trap Peaches.

Gerry said: “She has become like the replacement Paula and even uses the same arguments to convince people that she is just having a nice time.

“But while she plays around in her present company, nothing will change and it is so frustrating for me because I am watching history repeat itself.

“Things have been going disastrously wrong for Peaches for a while because she refuses to listen to the people who try to stop her, It’s tragic she has been boxed in badly, it will be the downfall of her too.

“I really hoped that when Peaches went to America she would break away from her toxic lifestyle but obviously that hasn’t happened,” Gerry added. (ANI)

”Reggie Bush dumps Kim Kardashian over marriage issue”

Washington, Mar 24 (ANI): Football player Reggie Bush has reportedly dumped socialite Kim Kardashian because he doesn”t want to marry her.

A source close to Kardashian, 29, revealed that this time it is for good, as Bush, 25, just “wasn”t feeling it anymore”, especially since what he wants differs totally from her lifestyle.

“Kim has been pushing for marriage, especially since Khloe got hitched, the pressure”s been on,” Radar Online quoted the source as saying.

“She feels it”s the next step for her and Reggie. But Reggie knows deep down in his heart that he doesn”t want to marry Kim.

“He basically put it on the line for her – he wants a wife that is a support system to him and would be a stay at home mom to his children.

“Reggie loves Kim but he knows that”s just not her. He loves her drive and ambition, and he thinks she”s amazing, he truly loves her, but he knows she”s just not the right kind of girl for him to marry,” the source said.

The split is said to have happened amidst reports of Bush cheating on Kardashian, and their struggle to maintain a long distance relationship is also said to have added to it.

“Kim is so caught up in the whole Hollywood thing, and that”s totally not Reggie”s scene,” the source said.

“He”s a jock, he”s a ball player, that”s his career and his life, and he just feels that Kim doesn”t fit 100 percent into that.

“Reggie didn”t want to string Kim along, he basically told her that she deserves to be with someone that can make the commitment that she wants.

“Kim is devastated, she loves Reggie with all her heart and truly believed that he would be her husband and the father of her children.

“She”s so maternal and is really in the place for kids right now – that”s just been amplified by the birth of Mason, her nephew.

“Kim kind of feels her sisters are leaving her behind, one is married and one is a mom – two things she really wants to be,” the source stated.

Another source close to the Kardashians said they don”t think Kim and Reggie will be able to work through this split and get back together, as they did last time.

“It has been a really rocky road for them and I”m not sure if they will get through this one,” the source added. (ANI)

Married people twice as likely to become fat than their single counterparts

London, Mar 20 (ANI): Wondering what wedding present to buy for your friend? Well, a gym membership might be a good idea. A new study has claimed that people who are married are twice as likely to become obese than their single counterparts.

And Greek boffins put the blame on changed lifestyle for the increased weight, as married couples “let themselves go”.

The research was based on the study of more than 17,000 couples aged between 20 and 70, reports The Telegraph.

From analyses, it was found that married couples exercised less frequently, had less sex, had poor nutrition and were “comfortable” in their lives.

Married couples spend more time eating together, sit in front of the TV more and often order takeaway ready meals while exercising less.

The study was presented on Friday to the Panhellenic Medical Conference.

Scientists from Salonica and Ioannina Universities concluded that “abdominal obesity, or belly fat” was the worst problem among married people.

Prof Dimitris Kiortsis, one of the study”s co-authors, from Ioannina University who is also president of the Hellenic Medical Association for Obesity, said most married couples also have less sex, which is considered intense exercise that burns calories.

The expert commented: “The need to hunt for a partner is reduced”. (ANI)

Confusion over Monaro airstrip plans

The Cooma-Monaro Shire Council in the New South Wales South East says an application to build airstrips on a Monaro property needs more clarification.

Plans to build two airstrips 9km south of Michelago has led to a community backlash, with people saying the development will affect their rural lifestyle.

The Council says issues such as the extent of use of the airstrip need to be clarified with the development applicants.

Director of Environmental Services Peter Smith says there is an element of confusion about the issue.

“The application with us is still current,” he said.

“The current application has not been rejected.

“We have asked that the applicant provide us with some more comprehensive information.

“The applicants have indicated that they wanted to amend the application, our advice to them was that they need to amend the whole application.”

How to stay fit in flu season

Washington, Sept 20 (ANI): As cold and flu season approaches, giving up junk food for more healthy options would help maintain a strong immune system.

Dr Ara DerMarderosian, professor of pharmacognosy for University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and an expert in nutraceuticals and natural foods, have provided guidance to change how you eat and break habits that pack on the pounds and compromise immunity.

? Don’t play “food police”

Be conscious of what and how much you eat, but don’t overdo self-monitoring to the point that a healthy lifestyle shifts from being a choice to becoming overwhelming, pushing other activities away and interfering with relationships.

? Pay attention to true hunger

Listen to your hunger signals and refrain from eating when you’re not hungry. Eating when your body doesn’t need food can cause you to overindulge.

? Eat slowly

Eat like a gourmet – enjoy each bite to have, chewing methodically, and truly enjoy the taste of your food. Eating slowly gives your body time to break down the food, which can prevent post-meal indigestion and feeling bloated.

? Focus on eating

Do not watch television, read or work while you eat. When you’re not focused on eating, it’s unlikely you’ll notice how much is going in your mouth.

? Avoid eating when stressed

Stress is a well-known cause of overeating and digestive issues, such as heartburn. A relaxing atmosphere, enjoyable company and conversation, and not feeling rushed for time makes for a healthy meal.

? Everything in moderation

Eating food is pleasurable, so enjoy a few morsels of candy, but limit the quantity. (ANI)

Katona’s ‘hubby wants to leak couple’s sex tape on net to ease cash crisis’

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Already troubled Kerry Katona fears getting into more mess as hubby Mark Croft wants to sell off a steamy sex tape of the couple to alleviate their cash crunch, it has emerged.

Pals say Katona’s former taxi driver hubby tried to sell the idea to her, which has made the ex-Atomic Kitten even more anxious about losing the custody of her two daughters, Molly and Lilly Sue, to their father and divorced hubby Brian Nicholas McFadden.

“Mark’s not given up hope by any means. He thinks it’s a guaranteed earner, which could make them anything up to half-a-million,” a pal was quoted by the Daily Star, as saying.

Friends say the 39-year old Croft has no plans to change his mind and he intends to use the cash from the tape’s sale to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

A friend said: “Mark thinks he knows it all and is determined to take over every aspect of Kerry’s life. He thinks that a sex tape of them, which somehow found its way on to the internet, would earn them a lot of cash – at least 250,000 pounds and possibly as much as 500,000 pounds.

“Mark is absolutely obsessed with money and has told Kerry that it could be a life-saver for them, but at the moment she’s having nothing to do with it.

“She’s scared stiff of anything so tacky being the last stop in her attempts to hold on to her two little girls by Brian McFadden.” (ANI)
