French singer wins £3K in damages over Bruni-Sarkozy liaison rumour

London, April 17 (ANI): A French pop singer has won 3,000 pounds in damages from a TV news station that alleged a liaison between him and France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

Benjamin Biolay had sought 20,000 pounds from the France-24 news channel for the “serious harm” he said he suffered from the allegation, reports the Daily Express.

Biolay’s lawsuit was one of two brought after internet rumours emerged last month that President Nicolas Sarkozy, and his wife were having extra-marital affairs.

France-24 carried the information in its international press review.

Biolay’s lawyer, Isabelle Wekstein, said she was satisfied with the court decision. (ANI)

Eurogroup statement on terms of Greek loans

Below is a text of the statement issued by euro zone finance ministers, the European Central Bank and the European Commission on the agreed terms of emergency loans for Greece, should Athens request help. “Statement on the support to Greece by Euro area Members States.

Following the statement by the Heads of State and Government of the Euro area on 25 March, Euro area Members States have agreed upon the terms of the financial support that will be given to Greece, when needed, to safeguard financial stability in the Euro area as a whole.

Euro area Members States are ready to provide financing via bilateral loans centrally pooled by the European Commission as part of a package including International Monetary Fund financing.

The Commission, in liaison with the ECB, will start working on Monday April 12th, with the International Monetary Fund and the Greek authorities on a joint program (including amounts and conditionality, building on the recommendations adopted by the Ecofin Council in February). In parallel, Euro area Members States will engage the necessary steps, at national level, in order to be able to deliver a swift assistance to Greece.

Euro area Member States will decide the activation of the support when needed and disbursements will be decided by participating Member States.

The program will cover a three-year period. The euro area Member States are ready to contribute for their part up to 30 billion in the first year to cover financing needs in a joint program to be designed with and co financed by the IMF. Financial support for the following years will be decided upon the agreement of the joint program.

In order to set incentives for Greece to return to market financing, Euro area Members States loans will be granted on non-concessional interest rates. The pricing formula used by the IMF is an appropriate benchmark for setting Euro area Members States bilateral loan conditions, albeit with some adjustments. Variable-rate loans will be based on 3-month Euribor. Fixed-rate loans will be based upon the rates corresponding to Euribor swap rates for the relevant maturities. A charge of 300 basis points will be applied. A further 100 basis points are charged for amounts outstanding for more than 3 years. In conformity with IMF charges, a one-off service fee of maximum 50 basis points will be charged to cover operational costs.

For instance, as of April 9th, for a three year fixed-rate loan granted to Greece, the rate would be around 5%.

The Eurogroup is confident that the determined efforts of the Greek authorities and of its European Partners will allow to overcome the fiscal and structural challenges of the Greek economy. In this context, the Eurogroup welcomes the budget execution in the first months of the year, which shows that the measures taken so far are bearing fruit.

Online dating sites helping people cheat on partners!

Sydney, Mar 27 (ANI): Internet dating sites are making a profitable business by offering cheating spouses an array of partners to have an affair with.

One such site operator is Noel Biderman, who uses the line “Life is short. Have an affair!” to advertise his online dating service, ashleymadison.com, which he claims has more than 5 million philandering members, including 10,000 in Australia.

But Biderman”s site is not the only one offering to help you find that special someone when you already have a special someone.

An Internet search throws up countless websites for cheating spouses, including meet2cheat.com.au, affairsclub.com, lonelyhousewives.com, philanderers.com and benaughty.com.

“I”m often asked if all these sites are causing more affairs,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted vice-president of Relationships Australia NSW, Anne Hollonds, as saying.

“To some extent it”s easier, you can just sit at a computer. But these tend to be people who are wanting to escape their circumstances and derive the benefits from having a liaison with someone else.

“There have always been people who wanted to do that but they found other ways of doing it,” she stated.

Affairs used to start in the office and end with the discovery of lipstick on the collar but the digital age has allowed them to unfold entirely in cyberspace.

Males outnumber females two to one on ashleymadison.com. Female users tend to fall into one of three categories: the desperate housewife, the other woman or the third and fastest-growing group, the honeymoon female – a newlywed “canvassing an exit strategy” after realising marriage is not what she expected.

Loraleigh, a member of ashleymadison.com, who not surprisingly, did not wish to give her last name, went looking for sex with no strings attached.

“I”ve been married for 16 years and my husband is seven years older,” she said.

“His libido has dropped and mine hasn”t; in fact mine has increased. He”s older and not as fit as I am. I go jogging, I box, I swim, I”m trying to get rid of excess energy,” she revealed.

The hanky-panky is usually limited to instant message or webcam exchanges but she has met one user.

“I work in the health industry and you don”t flirt with people at work. It”s simply not done, so for me this was the obvious choice,” she added. (ANI)

Ashley Cole’s newest secret liaison – music

London, March 23 (ANI): English footballer Ashley Cole has another secret liaison – to music.

The Chelsea star teamed up with rapper 50 cent on a track for the film ‘Dead Man Running’, which he co-produced with Rio Ferdinand.

“He”s a good guy, man. We”ve only worked together twice but the time I”ve been around him he”s been a gentleman,” the Sun quoted Fiddy as saying.

“He”s passionate about music. We wrote a song together for the Dead Man Running soundtrack.

“We created an idea on set and it was in the film,” Fiddy added. (ANI)

Abu Dhabi wins International Renewable Energy Agency headquarters

Nicosia, July 1 (ANI): Abu Dhabi has been selected to house the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The announcement was made at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, after other candidate cities, like Bonn and Vienna withdrew their candidacies.

Although IRENA was established last January, it saw its membership grow quickly from 75 member countries to 130.

The IRENA will be located in Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City, the world’s first carbon-neutral, zero-waste city, powered entirely by renewable energy.

Masdar is a 22 billion-dollar project being constructed near Abu Dhabi which is scheduled for completion in 2015, with a capacity to house up to 50,000 people.

The symbolism of having the seat of an organization dealing with renewable energy sources in a city powered only by renewable energy was too big to miss, although some critics had pointed out that the per capita energy consumption in the UAE was the highest in the world.

The UAE Government offered to cover all operational costs of the IRENA in perpetuity and will also grant the agency an amount of 136 million dollars over a six year period.

It should be noted that IRENA’s innovation centre will be located in Bonn and the organization will have a liaison office in Vienna. (ANI)

Pak rejects UN call for ‘humanitarian pause’ in Swat offensive

Washington, May 27 (ANI): Responding to the United Nations call for a ‘humanitarian pause’ in the Swat offensive, the Pakistan Army has said such a halt in the offensive is not possible at present, as it would provide a breather to extremists.

“Lifting the curfew would mean letting the operational situation slip out of hand,” ISPR spokesperson Major General Athar Abbas said.

He said the government is also concerned about the plight of the people trapped in the war-zone, and is planning to airdrop supplies.

Major General Abbas claimed that the military has forced the Taliban fighters on the defensive.

“They’re in disarray and finding ways to sneak out,” he added.

Earlier, expressing concern over the Swat exodus and the plight of the thousands of displaced people, the United Nations (UN) is considering asking Pakistan to halt its offensive against the Taliban in the valley.

The United Nations said immediate and massive relief measures were needed for the civilians trapped in the conflict for which there is an urgent need ‘humanitarian pause’ in the war.

“We are … very concerned about those still trapped inside the conflict zone.

A humanitarian pause is a subject of discussion and with the very good liaison we have with the armed forces, it is obviously something that we would not shy away from asking for,” head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Pakistan, Manuel Bessler said.

According to an estimate around 200,000 civilians are still trapped in Swat and tens of thousands in Buner and Lower Dir while the UNHCR said that almost 126,000 people were being displaced daily in the region.

Bessler said the army has been distributing food and providing medical assistance, but added that ‘more needs to be done’.

He said that the UN’s internal security division did not have enough information regarding the situation in the valley so that it could rush in its volunteers to work in the war zone.

According to a report of New York-based humanitarian agency, the Human Rights Watch (HRW), hundreds of people have been trapped between the extremists and security forces are being compelled to live with scant food and water as the security forces have imposed a continuous curfew in the region. China concerned over rising US ‘influence’ in Pakistan

Islamabad, May 8 (ANI): China has expressed concern over the rising US ‘influence’ in the region, including Pakistan.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Lou Zhaohui, while raising concerns over the presence of US troops in the region, said the number of foreign forces was ‘too high’ across the region.

“These are issues of serious concern for China. China is concerned over the US policies and the presence of a large number of foreign troops in the region,” the Dawn quoted Zhaohui, as saying.

Zhaohui also said that the expanding terror threat is a matter of prime concern for his country, and added that Beijing is lending all support to the United States and Pakistan to tackle the issue.

“We are cooperating with the US and Pakistan in the fight against terror,” he said.

Zhaohui added that China is also concerned about the safety of its over 10,000 citizens in Pakistan, and is closely monitoring the situation.

“Counter-terrorism pact is needed with Pakistan and we are in close liaison with the interior ministry for the security of over 10,000 Chinese engineers and technical experts in Pakistan,” he said. (ANI)

Quetta based Taliban leaders moves to Karachi, Peshawar fearing drone attacks

Peshawar, Apr 30 (ANI): A large number of Taliban leaders have shifted from Quetta to Karachi, Peshawar and other cities and are maintaining a low profile fearing fresh US drone strikes.

Taliban leaders after discussing in detail the situation, caused by recent threats of drone attacks by the United States, United Kingdom and other allies, have decided to vacate Quetta with immediate effect, sources have said.

The sources said that majority of the top leaders have shifted to Karachi, Peshawar and other areas of Pakistan and are now living in a low profile.

The Nation quoted sources as informing that Taliban leaders are under tremendous pressure of “certain friends to have ‘understanding’ with both Iran and China.”

Moreover, Taliban leadership has intensified efforts for collecting maximum donations from their Arab world well wishers and in this respect Maulvi Hamdullah has been made Taliban representative for the Gulf region.

Taliban supreme leader Mullah Muhammad Omar Akhund has written letters to around one thousands well wishers and philanthropists asking them for funds. Most of these well wishers belonged to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Maulana Hamdullah is considered amongst the most confidential aide to Mullah Omar since 1994. He had been heading the Finance Department in Qandahar during Taliban’s rule from 1994 till November 2001.

Meanwhile, Taliban leadership has also announced posting of Maulvi Qudratullah Jamal as Liaison Officer for the well wishers and friends throughout the world.

The Taliban leadership has also posted Maulvi Muatasem as head of Finance Committee, Maulvi Abdul Kabir as head of political Affairs Committee, Maulvi Aminullah as Commander for Orazgaan province, Amir Khan Mutaqqi as head of Culture and Information, Mullah Jalil as head for Interior Affairs and Mullah Baradar as special aide to Mullah Omar.

The sources informed that purpose of this reshuffling is to stimulate Taliban activities all over Afghanistan. (ANI)

Justice Department memos will have a chilling effect on US counter terrorism: Stratfor

Washington, Apr. 30 (ANI): The release of the four Department of Justice classified memos that reveal the controversial approval given by the Bush administration to torture and interrogation techniques used on GITMO detainees have had a chilling effect on US counter terrorism, believes intelligence think tank STRATFOR.

According to STRATFOR, realistically, those most likely to face investigation and prosecution are those who wrote the memos, rather than the low-level field personnel who acted in good faith based upon the guidance the memos provided, in spite of the fact that Obama has reassured that there will be no witch hunt.

The intelligence community believes the release of the memos has had a discernible “chilling effect” on those in the clandestine service who work on counter terrorism issues.

STRATFOR opines that the debate over the morality of such interrogation techniques has distracted many observers from examining the impact that the release of these memos is having on the ability of the U.S. government to fulfill its counter terrorism mission.

“Politics and moral arguments aside, the end effect of the memos’ release is that people who have put their lives on the line in U.S. counter terrorism efforts are now uncertain of whether they should be making that sacrifice,” says STRATFOR.

STRATFOR believes the memos’ release will not have a catastrophic effect on U.S. counter terrorism efforts, as most of the information in the memos was leaked to the press years ago and has been public knowledge.

However, when the release of the memos is examined in a wider context, and combined with a few other dynamics, it appears that the U.S. counter terrorism community is quietly slipping back into an atmosphere of risk-aversion.

It says that it is very important to realize that the counter terrorism community is just one small part of the larger intelligence community that is affected by this ebb and flow of covert activity.

“Counter terrorism is considered an ancillary program that is sometimes seen as an interesting side tour of duty, but more widely seen as being outside the mainstream career path – risky and not particularly career-enhancing. This assessment is reinforced by such events as the recent release of the memos,” says STRATFOR.

STRATFOR concludes by saying that it was a lack of intelligence that led the Bush administration to authorize enhanced interrogation techniques. Ironically, the current investigation into those techniques and other practices may very well lead to significant gaps in terrorism-related intelligence from both internal and liaison sources.

The U.S. counter terrorism community may soon be facing challenges even more daunting than those posed by its already difficult mission. (ANI)

CIA no longer using secret prisons: US spy chief

In a U-turn to George Bush’s policies to deal with terror, the CIA has shut down its secret prisons where the US spy agency used to interrogate suspected terrorists using harsh techniques, including waterboarding.

In a letter to the agency’s employees, CIA Director Leon Panetta has said that he informed the US Congress of its detention policies, following an executive order by President Barack Obama this January to close down the secret detention sites as well as the camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

The US spy chief said in his letter, issued on Thursday, that the Central Intelligence Agency had discontinued “using contract employees to conduct interrogations” also.

“CIA no longer operates detention facilities or black sites and has proposed a plan to decommission the remaining sites. I have directed our agency personnel to take charge of the decommissioning process and have further directed that the contracts for site security be promptly terminated,” he wrote.

The now-empty “black sites” in unidentified countries were used to detain suspects who were captured in the “war on terrorism” launched by former American President George W Bush after the September 11 attacks.

However, Panetta said that the CIA would continue to question suspects, using “a dialogue style of questioning that is fully consistent with interrogation approaches authorized and listed in the Army Field Manual” which bans harsh methods, the US media reported.

“CIA officers do not tolerate, and will continue to promptly report, any inappropriate behaviour or allegations of abuse. That holds true whether a suspect is in the custody of an American partner or a foreign liaison service,” he said.

Election observers enjoy state-sponsored boat cruise, dinner

Panaji, April 9 (IANS) Three election observers, deputed by the Election Commission to ensure free and impartial polls in Goa, were treated to a complimentary boat cruise and dinner by state tourism department last weekend, sources said Thursday, though one observer said he knew nothing about it while another denied being on the junket.

The trip, on board the state-run cruise boat Santa Monica, for the three observers Chanchal Tewari (Indian Administrative Service), Masood Hassan (Indian Administrative Service) and T.C. Jose (Indian Revenue Service) and their liaison officer M. Olwatt April 4, has kicked off a storm with terse noting being exchanged between the state tourism department, which initiated the junket, and the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) which is now dithering from footing the bill.

When contacted, Tewari said that he ‘does not know anything about this’. Hassan, on the other hand, denied being a part of the junket. ‘You better clarify this with the tourism department,’ he said.

Tourism department sources told IANS that the request for the junket for the three officials came from deputy director in the tourism department Pamela Mascarenhas, who called up the assistant manager at Santa Monica booking counter asking him to arrange a complimentary dinner and cruise.

‘We do not give such complimentary tickets until the managing director of GTDC Benjamin Braganza clears it. But being a weekend he could not be contacted. So complimentary passes were given to the observers and their liaison officer,’ a source said.

On Monday, however, the managing director in his noting said that the GTDC would not foot the bill and it would have to be paid by the tourism department.

‘The act is highly objectionable and inappropriate, more so because the officials are attached to the Election Commission in Goa to conduct free and impartial polls,’ the managing director’s note reads. IANS has a copy of the note.

A copy of the note has also been forwarded to the Election Commission.

Deputy Election Officer P.S. Meena, who wrote the letter to the GTDC chief seeking the complimentary passes, has been relieved of election duties, though a senior official said this was because he had some ‘urgent family work’.

The three observers were appointed to Goa by the Election Commission from a pool of senior bureaucrats to oversee the election process and ensure that the poll exercise is fair and impartial.

In the past, the apex court has taken serious view of state government funds being used for the entertainment of election observers, as it ‘would have serious impact on the impartiality of such observers’.

‘This should be taken care of by the Election Commission and strict instructions should be given to observers not to accept undue hospitality of states because that would unnecessarily compromise their objectivity and transparency,’ the Supreme court had said in a 2005 ruling.

Indian American Penn says White House shift not the end of his acting career

Washington, Apr.9 (ANI): Indian American actor Kal Penn has insisted that his move to the White House isn’t the end of his acting career.

He said that he is just taking a break to concentrate on public service.

The actor left fans of the U.S. medical drama ‘House’ stunned on Monday night when his doctor character, Lawrence Cutner, committed suicide.

According to the New York Daily News, he then announced he’d taken a position as the associate director in the White House’s Office of Public Liaison and Intergovernmental Affairs – a role similar to the one he held as a volunteer in Barack Obama’s campaign before he became President.

Penn moved to Iowa to work exclusively for Obama during the Hollywood writers strike in 2007, and admits he has wanted to do more for the U.S. leader ever since.

But he insists this won’t signal the end of his acting career.

Calling in to Los Angeles radio station KOST 103.5 on Wednesday morning, Penn said, “I’m not retiring from acting… It’s not a Joaquin Phoenix-style walking away (and) never coming back.

He adds, “I still have a passion for it. But for the time being, I won’t be acting.”

Of his new public service role, the actor reveals: “I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there, so I’m going to be the associate director in the White House office of public liaison.”

“They do outreach with the American public and with different organisations. They’re basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House.” (ANI)

Amar Singh does U-turn, won’t quit Samajwadi Party

Lucknow, April 8 (IANS) Hours after he publicly threatened to quit the Samajwadi Party owing to his ego clash with senior party leader Azam Khan, Amar Singh took a U-turn, claiming he had been misunderstood.

Differences within the Samajwadi Party flared up Tuesday, when general secretary Amar Singh dared party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to choose between him and party leader Azam Khan and said he was prepared to walk out of the organisation.

‘If people think that the party can survive without me but not without Azam Khan, I would not hesitate to say good-bye to Mulayam Singhji and make an exit from the party,’ he said at a seminar organised by the Student Islamic Federation of India here.

However, later he invited select TV journalists around 11 p.m. Tuesday at his Gomati Nagar residence to tell them: ‘I may leave this world but will never leave the Samajwadi Party’.

Samajwadi Party sources claimed that Amar Singh’s ‘change of heart’ came after Mulayam Singh gave him a piece of his mind.

Mulayam Singh was understood to have reminded Amar Singh that if he had risen from a liaison officer of a corporate house to a political leader of consequence, it was entirely due to the blessings showered on him by the Samajwadi Party chief.

Amar Singh promptly went for damage control and decided to blame the media by coming up with the usual alibi that he had been misquoted.

As if building up a defence for his subdued participation in the poll campaign, he went on to plead that ‘owing to ill-health, I may not be in a position to devote as much time in the campaign as I had planned earlier’.

He said his absence at some places should not be attributed ‘to anything else’.

When a journalist sought to know what he was ailing from, pat came the reply: ‘Both my kidneys are damaged, so I have to undergo various time-consuming procedures.’

Indian American actor Penn gets a job in the White House

Washington, Apr.7 (ANI): New Jersey-born actor Kal Penn, who played a stoner Guantanamo Bay escapee in the movies and a doctor on TV’s “House,” has been appointed an associate director in the White House Office of Public Liaison, administration officials confirmed Tuesday.

The Indian-American film star will be an emissary to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, along with arts and entertainment groups.

Penn campaigned extensively throughout the country for President Obama last year and was a hit on college campuses.

“I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House. I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there,” Penn explained.

Penn described the office as the “front door” of the White House, saying he’ll be responsible for doing outreach with the American public.

Penn gained fame as the co-star of the raucous and profane “Harold and Kumar” stoner comedies that have become a cult favorite with fans worldwide. He also starred in Mira Nair’s ‘The Namesake,’ and played a terrorist in a recurring role on “24.”

Penn acknowledged that ditching Hollywood for Washington comes with a massive pay cut.

As it turns out, Penn will not be working in the White House, per se. His office will be in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, located next to the West Wing and housing most of the White House staff.

Penn, born in Montclair, New Jersey, said he’s long been interested in both the arts and public service. His grandparents marched with Gandhi in the Indian independence movement, “and that was always in the back of my head.”

A UCLA graduate, Penn has been taking courses in international security at Stanford University. (ANI)

Israel not taking orders from Obama, says Minister

Jerusalem, Apr.7 (ANI): Israel’s Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan has said that his country is not taking orders from US President Barack Obama or officials of his administration.

Responding to an earlier statement by Obama in which he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to all previous understandings between Israel and the Palestinians, including the process launched at Annapolis, Maryland, in 2007, Erdan said: “Israel does not take orders from [Barack] Obama,”.
Erdan, who is also the liaison between the cabinet and the Knesset, praised Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman , who said Israel was not bound by the Annapolis talks because it had never been approved by the cabinet or the Knesset.

“In voting for [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu the citizens of Israel have decided that they will not become the US’s 51st state,” the Jerusalem Post quoted Erdan, as saying.

He added, however, that “Obama is a friend of Israel and the United States is an important ally, and everything between us will be the result of communication.”

The Prime Minister’s Office responded to Obama’s comments in Turkey by saying, “Israel appreciates President Obama’s commitment to Israel’s security and to the pursuit of peace.”

“The government of Israel is committed to both of these goals and will formulate its policies in the near future so as to work closely with the United States toward achieving these common objectives,” the statement read, while not addressing Obama’s comments on the Annapolis process and the two-state solution. US bars entry of Israel’s new national security aide

Washington, Mar.17 (ANI): The United States has decided to bar the entry of Uzi Arad, who is expected to be Israel’s new national security adviser, for nearly two years on the grounds that he is an intelligence risk.

According to the Washington Times, Arad, a former member and director of intelligence for the Mossad, Israel’s spy service, is mentioned in the indictment of Lawrence Franklin, a former Pentagon analyst who pleaded guilty in 2005 to providing classified information about Iran in a conversation with two employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Beyond Arad’s status, Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to face difficulties abroad because of his choice, announced Monday, of Avigdor Lieberman to serve as foreign minister in a narrow new rightist government.

Lieberman, head of the Israel Is Our Home party, has advocated requiring Israel’s 1.46 million Arabs to take a loyalty test or risk expulsion.

Arad acknowledged to The Washington Times that he has not been able to obtain a visa to come to the United States, but said the Israeli government is trying to change that.

“The director general of the Israel Foreign Ministry did tell his American counterparts that there has been no cause to deny me a visa,” Arad told The Times.

Israeli and U.S. officials said Arad has been denied a U.S. visa since June 2007 under section 212 3(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

This gives consular officers and the Justice Department authority to bar people who may seek “to violate any law of the United States relating to espionage or sabotage” from entering the country.

Arad was a member of the Mossad spy service from 1975 to 1997. After retiring, he became Netanyahu’s foreign policy adviser.

While in the Mossad, Arad worked mainly on analysis, but he also served as a liaison for intelligence operations with allied services such as the CIA. (ANI)

Pak security officials “abandoned us” during terror attack: Peter Manuel

Colombo, Mar, 9 (ANI): The umpires’ minivan which was traveling behind the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team, was virtually abandoned by the security personnel when bullets rained from all directions during the terror attack.

Umpires performance manager Peter Manuel, who was inside the van with Umpires Simon Toffel, Steve Davis, Nadhim Gouri, Ahsan Raza, ICC match referee Chris Broad, and liaison officer Abdul Sami, has said that they were left alone by their security officers during the attack.

Recalling his brush with death, Manuel said: “It was unbelievable. Bullets were raining on us and not a shot was fired in our defense by the Pakistan security officials. We were basically abandoned by the security that was supposed to protect us. The 20 minutes that we were in that situation felt eternal.”

Manuel was infuriated by the fact that no effort was made to by the security officers to ensure the safety of all the officials following the attack on the bus carrying the Lankan cricketers.

He said that one security personnel, during the attack, in fact opened the door of the van to hide inside rather than retaliating the terrorists’ gun-shots.

“When the van door opened I thought that was the end of all of us. I thought the terrorist will either massacre us in the van or would drop a grenade. When we saw the police officer we were glad to see him but it is virtually only by shouting at him in a deafening manner that forced him to drive us to safety after he refused several times,” The Dawn quoted Manuel, as saying.
