No charges against Michael Phelps after bong scandal

New York, Feb 17 (ANI): Olympic golden boy Michael Phelps will not face any charges in pot-smoking scandal, according to South Carolina sheriff Leon Lott.

Lett confirmed that they won’t prosecute the 23-year-old star, as he defended the zealousness of his probe into pot-smoking at a college party last year.

The eight times Olympic gold medallist came under fire after he was snapped smoking marijuana pipe at a party in University of South Carolina.

Lott said that they had no choice but to launch a probe after the photos surfaced.

“These were drug violations. You had to do something,” The New York Daily News quoted Lott as saying.

“If I had ignored it, people on the other side would have asked why I had ignored it,” he added.

Lott said he won’t prosecute Phelps because, while the Olympian never disputed the photo was of him smoking a water pipe, he also never specifically admitted it.

“We had a photo, and him saying he was sorry for inappropriate behaviour. That behaviour could have been going to a party. He never said, ‘I smoked marijuana,’” he added.

Meanwhile, Phelps said he was relieved, had learned his lesson and was ready to “dive back into the pool.” (ANI)

Eight arrested in Michael Phelps’ pot puffing scandal

Washington, Feb 11 (ANI): Eight people have been arrested in connection to Olympic golden boy Michael Phelps’s pot puffing scandal.

According to WIS-TV, Richland County Sheriff’s Department has taken seven suspects in custody for possessing marijuana and the one for dealing in it.

One person is suspected to be the owner of the bong – who wasn’t present at the party, but was allegedly trying to sell the pipe on eBay for 100,000 dollars, reports Fox News.

The pics published in Britain’s News of the World, showing the eight times Olympic gold medallist using a bong, were taken in November at a University of South Carolina house party.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott has been criticized by those who believe he should focus on other crimes and stop singling out Phelps when other partygoers also broke the law.

But he said that he couldn’t ignore the violation captured in the picture just because Phelps is rich and famous.

USA Swimming has barred the 23-year-old star for three months, while Kellogg, the food company, announced that it would not renew its contract with swimming sensation when their deal expires at the end of February. (ANI)
