Not all weak China local-govt loans sure to sour

July 27 (Reuters) – Not all the loans to local government financing vehicles that Chinese banks have identified as being at risk of default will in fact turn sour, a source at China’s banking regulator said on Tuesday.

The source, who declined to be identified, was responding to media reports that about 23 percent of the 7.66 trillion yuan ($1.13 trillion) that banks had lent to local governments, mainly to finance infrastructure, could become non-performing. [ID:nTOE66P032]

He said banks could mitigate credit risk by, for example, requiring the borrowers to set aside more collateral.

The estimate of the percentage of loans at risk was based on the banks’ own investigations at the behest of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the source added. (Reporting by Zhou Xin and Simon Rabinovitch; Writing by Alan Wheatley; Editing by Jacqueline Wong)

Newton”s apple tree to travel into zero gravity

London, May 10 (ANI): A piece of the tree, which inspired Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of gravity after an apple fell from it, will be carried into zero gravity space on the next NASA shuttle mission.

The section of wood from Newton”s original apple tree is normally held in the Royal Society”s archives.

It was lent to British-born astronaut Dr Piers Sellers, who will be taking it into orbit, as part of the academic institution”s 350th anniversary celebrations.

The tree sample will be accompanied on its trip into space by an image of Sir Isaac, also donated by the Royal Society.

“We”re delighted to take this piece of Sir Isaac Newton”s apple tree. While it”s up there, it will experience no gravity, so if it had an apple on it, the apple wouldn”t fall,” the Scotsman quoted Sellers, a graduate of Edinburgh University, as saying.

“I”m pretty sure Sir Isaac would have loved to see this, as it would have proved his first law of motion to be correct,” he added. (ANI)

Morrissey’s tribute to late superfan

London, May 5 (ANI): Singer Morrissey expressed his deep sympathies in a tribute that he penned for a long time fan who passed away last month.

After being told by DJ Janice Long of her death, the former The Smiths frontman paid homage to Melinda Hsu – who travelled thousands of miles to follow the singer””s tours – to thank her for giving him “strength” during his live shows.

In a statement, Morrissey writes: “I did not know Melinda personally, but I felt as if I did because she had been a front row fixture for many years… Mel was a smiling face who lent strength to every single concert, even when events were going somewhat pear-shaped.”

“I felt as if I knew Mel because she was always there – regardless of wherever ””there”” happened to be; no snowbound landscape too far, no off-the-beaten track too untrekkable (sic). I often handed her the microphone mid-concert and she would always make an effort to say something different each time.

“What is more, she always seemed so happy to be there on the front row, even though she had heard these live renditions enough times to emaciate the brain of the most inherently decent devotee… Her contribution was a declaration of love for which she seemed to save all of her strength, and for which I could only ever repay with half-witted mumbles of thanks,” The Daily Star quoted him as saying. Kenna’s VC loaned to War Memorial

The Victoria Cross awarded to Private Edward Kenna for destroying a Japanese machine gun nest during World War II is now on display at the Australian War Memorial.

Private Kenna was Australia’s last surviving World War II VC recipient until his death last year at the age of 90.

He kept his Victoria Cross in a sock drawer for most of his life, but this morning his surviving family lent the medal to the museum.

Private Kenna was awarded the prestigious medal for valour after exposing himself to heavy gunfire in New Guinea in 1945.

He killed a Japanese machine gun crew, making it possible for his company’s attack to succeed.

But his son, Rob Kenna, says his father never mentioned the brave acts.

“If you ever spoke to dad about the VC, it was all about the people who didn’t come home, brave people who died,” he said.

War Memorial director Steve Gower says the museum is grateful for the loan.

“Ted Kenna showed remarkable and unselfish courage in the service of others,” he said.

“With his award now publicly displayed at the Memorial, it can be viewed by all Australians who can reflect on his gallantry.”

Landholders back plan to save plains wanderers

Landholders around Conargo have lent their support to a new plan to save an endangered ground-dwelling bird, the plains wanderer.

The new plan comes five years after the original Plains Wanderer Recovery Plan.

Western Riverina farmers thought the initial management plan was too restrictive.

Colin Bull, who heads the North Conargo Land Management Group, says the new plan is a win for everyone, including the plains wanderer.

“There’s commonsense in the new plan and any landholders I speak to they just want to be proud that they’ve got the bird on their property but not have any unnecessary restrictions … put on them,” he said.

The Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, and the Murray Catchment Management Authority have developed the new plan which will be launched at the Conargo Hall this morning.

Mr Bull says it is a good outcome for everyone.

“We have to work with the threatened species legislation whether we like it or not. We want the bird to be there, we want to be proud that the bird is on our land and we want a workable situation which we believe will be a win-win situation for everyone,” he said.

Dentists ‘exploiting’ Medicare scheme

Dental health experts say the Federal Government has failed to stop dentists from rorting the Medicare dental scheme.

The Senate has twice blocked the Government’s attempts to replace the scheme with a cheaper, more targeted plan.

Associate Professor Hans Zoellner, from the Association for the Promotion of Dental Health, says the Government should retain the scheme and administer it responsibly.

“A handful of dentists have been exploiting the scheme and overservicing patients and giving too much crown and bridge,” he said.

“There’s an unnecessarily great expense, a significant amount which is probably not required and just purely cosmetic.

“The Government really has an important role to regulate the scheme but instead of regulating dental Menticare, the Government has simply refused to even look at it.”

But Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon says the program was poorly designed by the previous Government.

“It has lent itself to be able to be abused, it’s clear when there is an undersupply of dental services in the community and when dental care is expensive that any program would provide some relief,” she said.

“But we believe it would be much better targeted to those who have the most need.”

The truth behind Obama’s ‘rear view’ G-8 pic revealed

Washington, July 11 (ANI): A reporter behind the controversial G-8 photo, which depicts U.S. President Barack Obama seemingly checking out a woman’s rear, has now lent some clarity to it.

“There has been interest in a certain photo of the president during this photo-op, and I have mentioned what I saw from my perspective to several of you, so here it is for everyone,” the Politico quoted Pool reporter Stephen Dinan of the Washington Times as saying in an addendum sent to White House reporters.

Obama was the centre of attention for most of the event. All eyes were on him, particularly, when the group entered, and as the juniors-the teen student that accompanied each leader-were leaving the stage.

Dinan says that he did not look anything from his perspective that looked like Obama checking out anyone.

He says that he did see Obama act as a traffic cop, and keep things running.

“Obama greeted most, if not all, of the juniors,” the reporter said.

“For the photo Obama was standing in between Sarkozy (on his left) and the US junior, with Lula’s junior and then Lula to right of them. The juniors were led out by summit staff one-by-one to the right of the stage, while the leaders remained for their own photo.

It was at this point that your pooler did see Obama, Lula and Sarkozy laughing and appearing to needle each other over something as they were looking toward their right,” the reporter added. (ANI)

Car theft syndicates employing sexy girls to steal amorous men’s cars

Kuala Lumpur, Jun 24 (ANI): Sexy women are helping car theft syndicates steal amorous businessmen’s luxury vehicles, says a report.

According to the Harian Metro, during the past six months, about 10 businessmen have lost their cars after being seduced by these women.

The women persuade their victims to lend them their expensive cars, and then deliver the vehicles to the syndicates.

The crime would usually go unreported by the victim, who fears for his image or family life.

But the ploy came to light when one of the victims, businessman Ramli Che Mat, 36, reported his car stolen after he lent it to a friend.

Ramli said that he had lent his Toyota Caldina to his friend in January with the intention of selling it to him.

“Without telling me, he let his ‘girlfriend’ use it,” the Star Online quoted him as saying.

Ramli was alerted when the bank called to inform him about missing the hire-purchase payment for two months, and he immediately asked his friend about the car.

Both of them then visited the woman at her Setapak home, but she claimed the bank had repossessed the car.

However, a call to the bank revealed that there was no order for the vehicle to be repossessed, said Ramli.

He and his friend then went to confront the woman again, but found that she had disappeared. She did not answer her mobile phone either.

“However, she did send an SMS that sounded like a challenge to us to lodge a police report,” he said.

Subang Jaya police chief ACP Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar confirmed that a report had been lodged on the matter. (ANI)

‘Clear-headed’ Farrah Fawcett praised by doctor

London, May 20 (ANI): Cancer-stricken Farrah Fawcett’s doctor has showered the actress with praises, saying her “clear thinking” has lent her a helping hand in battling the disease.

The former Charlie’s Angels star was diagnosed with anal cancer back in 2006, and it has since spread to her liver.

The 62-year-old, in 2007, refused to undergo a colostomy, a surgical procedure that involves connecting a part of the colon onto the anterior abdominal wall, opting for an alternative therapy in Germany instead.

And now, her doctor, Lawrence Vogl, feels the star was right in turning down the surgery.

“I’m not truly convinced (it would have helped). Farrah always had – and has – a very special insight and very clear thinking. And I think if you see it now, I think she, in a way, was right,” the Daily Star quoted Vogl as saying in an interview with Larry King.

Vogl further said he admired the brave actress for her determination, adding: “If you treat the person for a longer time, you will always have a very special relationship.

“But from a lot of treatments and contact and communication, I think she is extremely special, an extremely brave person. She was very charming and very, very controlled.” (ANI)

US school sets world record with 27 hours of drumming

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): A group of US school students have made a new world record by drumming for 27 hours and 23 seconds.

Students at Rock Hill High School in South Carolina began the drum roll at 5pm on May 8 and continued to play until around 8pm the next day.

The 27 musicians lent a helping hand in raising 3,600 dollars which will now be spent on new equipment for the school band, reports the China Daily.

Percussion director Michael Skellett told a local newspaper: “It’s been a huge success. Plus, we got to break a world record in the process, which is cool.”

One student, Jason Piers, piped the previous individual world record by two minutes but his name may not officially enter the Guinness since he did not complete the paperwork in advance.

Piers, who kept the drum roll on for four hours and 10 minutes, revealed he would appeal for his efforts to be officially recognised since the video footage of the attempt existed.

He added: “If not, I’ll do it next year.” (ANI)

Steve Waugh cleans muck in Kolkata

Kolkata, May 8 (ANI): Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh cleaned muck from an Indian water body in Kolkata during the cleanliness drive in the city.

He had also pitched in his support to build homes for tsunami victims in Andaman Nicobar islands in 2005. (ANI)
