Uganda oil finds trigger land grab near fields-mps

June 25 (Reuters) – The discovery of oil in western Uganda has prompted a land grab around the oil fields, dispossessing impoverished local communities and providing a potential trigger for conflict, members of parliament from the area said on Friday.

Energy

East Africa’s third largest economy is basking in a fresh wave of economic vitality as global investors rush in to tap opportunities in its budding oil industry.

Commercial hydrocarbon deposits were discovered in the Albertine Rift Basin close to the country’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2006 and reserves are estimated at 2 billion barrels.

Member of parliament Stephen Biraahwa Mukitale told Reuters there was a rush by powerful and influential individuals to acquire large tracts of land in the area.

“Land in the whole of the Albertine Graben is mostly customarily owned but powerful individuals speculating on its value are trying to survey and register large chunks of it in their names,” he said.

“I have warned the government that this is a recipe for conflict. The government must formally and openly survey and demarcate land in the whole area and give titles to the communities.”

The scramble for land, he said, is consolidating ownership in a few individuals and could provoke landless and impoverished people in the region to sabotage oil exploration and production activity in future.

“The land that is being registered for freehold ownership has owners already, these are the local communities and you can’t guarantee what these people will do once they discover they no longer own the land,” he said.

Tomson Kyahurwenda, another legislator from the region, told Reuters the land grab could unsettle the region.

“People go to Kampala and acquire individual titles and you find one person with nearly ten titles and I think this is not only unacceptable but criminal,” he said.

“The government policy is that land in that area belongs to the communities,” Matia Kasaija, junior internal affairs minister, told Reuters. Kasaija did mention any possible government action against grabbers.

Tullow Oil (TLW.L), which has made the most discoveries in the region, expects to start limited commercial petroleum production in the last quarter of 2011. Daily crude output is forecast to peak at about 200,000 barrels by 2015.

Tullow is awaiting approval of its proposed purchase of Heritage Oil’s (HOIL.L) exploration assets in Uganda. Heritage is selling its half-share stakes in exploration areas 1 and 3A for a total of $1.5 billion.

Approval of the deal, though, has stalled over a tax dispute pitting Heritage against the Ugandan government. (Reporting by Elias Biryabarema; Editing by Giles Elgood)

Youth Congress membership set to touch half million in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 (IANS) The membership of the Youth Congress is all set to touch the half million-mark in Kerala, a Congress legislator said Sunday.

Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunadh, who will contest for the post of Youth Congress president in the elections to be held in August, told IANS that initial indications are that the total number of Youth Congress members in the state will touch half a million.

‘We can’t make a comparison to the past because such a membership drive has never taken place,’ Vishnunadh said.

‘There could be close to a lakh new members and we feel that there would be at least one lakh women members also. The correct figures are expected in the coming days as the two returning officers are busy compiling the data,’ Vishnunadh said.

The minimum age for entry into the Youth Congress is 18 and the maximum age is 35. This time instead of dividing the Youth Congress based on the 14 districts of the state, each of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state have been divided into two.

Vipin Jose, a member of the Youth Congress who is planning to contest for the post of president from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha unit said: ‘The best part this time is that it has been made very clear in the rules that one person will have only one party post and hence more number of people can move up the ladder. This time a person can take membership from where he lives only.’

Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Sachin Pilot and Mohammed Azharuddin had come to the state for interaction with Youth Congress members.

Indonesia president proposes Nasution as c.bank gov -lawmaker

June 2 (Reuters) – Indonesia’s president on Wednesday proposed acting central bank governor Darmin Nasution, seen as dovish by markets, as the candidate for central bank governor, a legislator from the president’s party said.

The post of central bank governor has been vacant for a year after the former governor Boediono quit to team up with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and run as his vice president in last year’s elections.

Achsanul Qosasi, a lawmaker from Yudhoyono’s Democrat Party, said that the president had nominated Nasution.

Nasution, 61, has said inflation will likely remain within the central bank’s target range of 4-6 percent this year, and that should allow Bank Indonesia to keep its key interest rate BIPG at a record low of 6.5 percent for the rest of 2010, stoking growth in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. China, Afghanistan sign three deals to boost economic cooperation

Beijing, Mar 25(ANI): Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai have signed three deals, in which China has announced more investment in the war-torn country and pledged to continue aiding reconstruction efforts.

Jintao and Karzai, who is on a state visit to China, signed the deals on Wednesday, and it covers economic cooperation, technical training and the granting of preferential tariffs for some Afghan exports to China.

Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul said China has contributed tremendously in Afghan economic development, especially in infrastructure building.

Rassoul said Afghanistan welcomes more Chinese investment, and promised that the government will take necessary measures for the security of Chinese companies and nationals working in Afghanistan.

“There are some security issues. We are trying to deal with it and I hope the security situation will allow Chinese investment to operate without any risks,” The China Daily quoted Rassoul, as saying.

This is Karzai”s first visit to China since his re-election last year, and his fourth as Afghan President.

During his visit, he is also scheduled to meet top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao. (ANI)

UK’s Cameron says politicians not all “sleazy pigs”

British opposition leader David Cameron called on Tuesday for an inquiry into the actions of former ministers from the ruling Labour Party who were caught on camera offering to influence government policy for cash.

Seeking to embarrass Labour weeks before a national election, Cameron said the scandal had left voters thinking that British politicians were “just sleazy pigs out for gain”.

“But we are not, actually. There is a real role for politics and parliament to change things and make things better. And a new government, a new prime minister, a new parliament … could make a difference,” Cameron told a news conference.

Politicians’ moral standards had already become an electoral issue following a scandal last year over dubious expense claims filed by legislators. Both main parties were tainted.

Labour, trailing the Conservatives in opinion polls ahead of an election expected on May 6, suspended the three former cabinet ministers and one legislator who were secretly filmed by reporters posing as American lobbyists.

The footage, broadcast on national television on Monday, raised questions about whether the four had taken cash from lobbyists in exchange for using their influence in the past.

Labour dismissed calls for an inquiry, saying the politicians concerned had already referred themselves to a parliamentary watchdog and that senior civil servants had found no improper influence over government decisions.

5,000 POUNDS A DAY

The undercover footage showed Stephen Byers, a former transport secretary, telling reporters he could be hired for 5,000 pounds ($7,500) a day in exchange for access to ministers, secret government information and advice on influencing policy.

Byers later said he had been exaggerating his influence and denied any wrongdoing.

Cameron said a Conservative government would double to two years a bar on ex-ministers working as political lobbyists, and extend to 10 years the period during which former ministers had to seek advice from a watchdog on business appointments.

“Our political system is looking ever more ragged and broken,” he said. “It depends on public trust, and that trust … is in danger of disappearing altogether.”

The row has set the Conservatives back on the front foot on the issue of political standards after their own funding was put under the microscope since a major donor to the party disclosed that he was not paying British tax on his full income.

Michael Ashcroft, the Conservative deputy chairman and a multimillionaire with extensive interests in Belize, has “non-dom” tax status, meaning he is not taxed in Britain for income earned overseas. Labour has made extensive use of the Ashcroft row to attack the Conservatives.

Tampering of law student’s marks rocks Kerala assembly

Thiruvananthapuram, March 16 (IANS) The Kerala assembly Tuesday witnessed uproarious scenes and a walkout by the opposition over the alleged tampering of marks of law students, details of which are said to have been leaked by a Kerala University official who is the wife of the deputy leader of opposition.

Sulekha, the university’s controller of exams, is said to have discovered that marks of an LL.B final year student were raised from 34 to 44 in the Public International Law and Human Rights paper. Sulekha is the wife of deputy leader of Congress in the assembly G.Karthikeyan.

Congress legislator P.C.Vishnunadh moved an adjournment motion on the issue immediately after question hour but Speaker K. Radhakrishnan ruled that since Education Minister M.A.Baby was out of station, attending a function in which Kerala Governor R.S.Gavai was taking part, the motion could not be taken up.

This irked the opposition and Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy said as per the convention of the house, if a minister was absent some other minister could give a reply as the government had a collective responsibility.

This was opposed by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar, who said the question of collective responsibility did not arise on this issue.

‘The education minister has taken leave of absence from the speaker. Moreover, to reply to an issue in less than an hour for a minister not handling the department is not an easy task,’ said Vijayakumar.

But Chandy remained adamant and said what Vijayakumar pointed out did not go with the tradition of the house.

‘We also have been in government and we also have been absent from the assembly at times, but we handed over the responsibility to other ministers. Any minister can get the required information in an hour’s time to give a reply on an issue. What happened today is a black day in the history of the assembly,’ Chandy said, leading the opposition out of the house.

Later speaking to IANS, Vishnunadh said early this month a senior official of the Kerala University on perusal of certain records found that the marks list of students had been tampered with.

‘In the answer for Public International Law and Human Rights paper of final year LL.B course, a student had got 34 marks and this was marked on the counterfoil of the answer sheet. But in the tabulation sheet, he was found to have got 44 marks. On seeing this, the controller of examination called for the answer sheet and found that the student’s actual marks were 34. It was also found that an error of this nature was spotted in the case of another student as well,’ said Vishnunadh.

Earlier, during a meeting of the Kerala University Syndicate, members belonging to the Student Federation of India – the student wing of the ruling CPI-M – accused Sulekha of leaking details of the incident.

‘Our student activists who staged a protest march to the office of the university, yesterday (Monday) are now in jail. We demand a thorough investigation into the scam by an external agency because the credibility of the university is at stake,’ added Vishnunadh.

SP legislator booked for setting widow on fire

Lucknow, March 17 (IANS) A Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator in Uttar Pradesh has been booked for setting a woman on fire over a land dispute, police said Wednesday.

S. Azad, who represents the Sadar assembly seat, set ablaze Savitri Devi Tuesday night after heated arguments over a piece of land, police inspector Suresh Chauhan told reporters in Maharajganj district, around 300 km from Lucknow.

‘The incident took place in Rampur village. The legislator along with his supporters barged inside the widow’s home and later set her on fire.

‘The widow’s son tried to rescue his mother, but was assaulted by the supporters of the legislator. We have registered a case against the legislator, who is absconding. We have detained some of his supporters to ascertain his whereabouts,’ Chauhan said.

Savitri is being treated at a hospital, where her condition is stated to be very critical, he added.

Banish the cell phone, says ‘baba’ MP

New Delhi, March 17 (IANS) The ubiquitous cell phone is the epitome of all evil that would bedevil your sex life, damage your brain and make you a liar! That is the view of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Lok Sabha MP Prasanna Kumar Patasani, once a Maoist guerrilla and now a saffron-clad ‘baba’.

The MP from Bhubaneswar, who holds a mace even inside the house and is married with three children, advises young boys and girls to banish the mobile phone from their lives because even one year of its use could be harmful.

‘I have seen young boys and girls using the mobile phone for hours for romantic chat. If you continue this for one year… you will fail at the time of having sex,’ Patasani told IANS.

That’s not all.

‘Continuous usage of mobile phone will cause damage to the brain. Its radiation is harmful and it causes sexual problems,’ said Patasani, a renowned Oriya poet who spent some time in the Himalayas in the 1970s.

‘Don’t keep it in your pocket. Its radiation will harm your heart and other organs,’ said the man who was an Orissa cabinet minister in 1990-95.

Patasani says proudly that he refused to accept a mobile provided to all MPs from parliament.

Labelling it an ‘instrument of liar’ and a ‘time killing’ instrument, he said: ‘I have not taken it because of these scientific reasons.’

People carrying mobile phones, he went on, are compelled to lie to their family members and bosses when asked about their whereabouts.

‘So, it is an instrument of liar,’ said the MP, who studied in Singapore.

He said he meditated for more than eight years in a cave in Himalayas after accepting Maharshi Mahesh Yogi as his guru. He went underground after the then Congress government slapped the Maintenance of Internal Security Act on him for associating with Naxalites.

Patasani, who is president of more than 50 educational institutions and organisations, was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1998. He served as a legislator in the Orissa assembly for 18 years, from 1980 to 1998.

He has travelled to more than 100 countries and delivered a speech on various subjects, including on yoga and transcendental meditation.

Three candidates in fray for two Assam Rajya Sabha seats

Guwahati, March 16 (IANS) The Congress Tuesday fielded two candidates for as many seats for next week’s Rajya Sabha elections, while the opposition pledged its support to a media baron as its common candidate for one seat.

On the last day of filing of nominations, the Congress fielded Nazneen Farooq and sitting Rajya Sabha MP Silvious Condopan, while the opposition backed proprietor of the Asomiya Pratidin group of newspapers, Jayanta Barua, as its common candidate.

Election for the two Rajya Sabha seats is scheduled March 26. Both the seats are now held by the ruling Congress.

While the Congress took a gamble by fielding the second candidate, the lone opposition candidate is facing a challenge with several MLAs belonging to the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) openly revolting against the decision to support him as its candidate.

‘The party didn’t take our opinion and never discussed the name of Jayanta Barua while endorsing his candidature. I am unhappy and don’t support his candidature,’ said a visibly perturbed Abdul Aziz, an AGP legislator.

The AGP apart, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Asom United Democratic Front and the Left parties supported Barua’s candidature.

‘Since there are some problems within the opposition, we thought of fielding the second candidate,’ Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said.

The opposition is confident there would be no cross voting and all the legislators would vote for their common candidate.

‘We are confident our candidate would win,’ AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said.

But already there are hints of the Congress trying to woo disgruntled opposition legislators to vote for their candidate.

Mayawati challenges Income Tax probe with another currency garland

Lucknow, March 17 (ANI): Despite being criticised over the currency garland controversy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Wednesday defied the authorities by appearing again with a second currency garland.

Sources said the garland was presented to Mayawati by her supporters and is worth Rs 18 lakhs.

A BSP legislator said, “The money for the currency garland was collected with the help of donations from 18 BSP party-units.”

Mayawati had earlier called for an emergency meeting of her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to discuss the currency garland controversy involving her.

She was severely criticized both inside and outside Parliament as the currency garland controversy sparked demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the source of money used to make the garland reportedly worth Rs 5 crore.

The emergency meeting was called as the Income Tax Department is expected to begin an inquiry into the controversy.

The department is reportedly collecting photographs and video footage of the garland from various sources, including newspapers and TV channels that covered the event.

The Samajwadi Party and the Congress both have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter, questioning the source from where the money had come.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh has accused Mayawati of misusing public money, and said that she is not the daughter of a Dalit, but the daughter of wealth.

Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev has also criticized her of doing business through politics.

The multi-crore garland was just a small part of the extravagant Rs 200 crore celebrations that marked the BSP”s 25th anniversary, and its founder Kanshi Ram”s birthday, with a massive rally in Lucknow. (ANI)

Pak cricketers’ financial assets to be scrutinised following match fixing allegations

Islamabad, Mar. 8 (ANI): Pakistan’s National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports has decided to scrutinize the financial assets of Pakistani cricketers in the wake of match fixing allegation.

“We are very much concerned over the continuous criticism from different circles over match fixing and have directed PML (N) legislator Saud Majeed, chairman sub-committee, to probe into these allegations. The sub-committee will also scrutinize the financial strength of the players besides verifying their tax returns,” The Dawn NA committee chief Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, as saying

However, PCB chief Ijaz Butt informed the NA committee that the players who were involved in match-fixing were not from the current squad.

“The match fixing allegations are totally baseless and the current tour of the squad to Australia was not tainted by match fixing at all,” Butt said.

He claimed that that former cricketers Saleem Malik and Ataur Rehman were in fact responsible for match fixing.

The NA committee also gave a deadline of March 11 to the Punjab government for bring responsible police officers to book who displayed slackness during their duty on March 3, 2009 when the Sri Lankan cricket team was attacked by terrorists in Lahore. (ANI)

BJP- Shiv Sena finalises seat sharing for Maharashtra assembly polls

Mumbai, Aug 31 (ANI): Though the party’s top leadership is struggling to set the house in order, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Maharashtra unit has finalised the seat sharing agreement with the Shiv Sena on Monday for the upcoming assembly polls in the state.

According to BJP sources the talks with Shiv Sena are almost over and an official announcement would be made in a day or two.

Both the parties agreed for the existing 171:117 formula for the 288 Assembly seats, sources added.

In the 2004 Assembly elections, the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance had allotted seven seats to Shetkari Sanghatana led by vetern farmer’s leader Sharad Joshi. As Joshi’s party is no more a partner of Sena-BJP combine, both the parties are expected to share these seats.

BJP is claiming the Chindwada seat, as the sitting legislator of that constituency joined the party.

The poll managers of the saffron alliance are confident of achieving seat matrix despite trouble faced by the BJP central leadership.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress – Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) combine is still not sure on maintaining the alliance. Also the strategy of Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is not yet clear.

The MNS is holding its cards close to the chest as to go alone or ally with one of the two major political groups, or opt for the Third Front. (ANI)

BJP cannot shun support to Gorkhaland with Jaswant’s expulsion: GJM

Siliguri, Aug.19 (ANI): Members of the ethnic Gorkha Janmukti Morcha on Wednesday said that the expulsion of their legislator Jaswant Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party would neither affect their demand for autonomous Gorkhaland and nor could BJP back out from its promise on the issue.

Jaswant Singh has been elected to Lok Sabha from Darjeeling parliamentary constituency.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha wants a separate state to be carved out from West Bengal.

Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), the organisation demanding separate statehood, said that Jaswant Singh was still their lawmaker and hoped that he would continue to work for them.

“Jaswant Singh has been expelled from the party but he is still a member of the Parliament from Darjeeling. His political and personnel figure remains intact and has vast experience of 40 year in Indian politics. We expect that he would continue to work here and his expulsion would not have any effect,” said Hemant Gautam, a leader of GJMM.

The members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha were reacting after hearing the news about Jaswant Singh being expelled from the primary membership of BJP on Wednesday (August 19).

Earlier in the day, the apex leadership of BJP which is presently meeting at Shimla in Himachal Pradesh expelled him over his book applauding Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan in his recently released book.

The book ‘Jinnah – India, Partition, Independence’, has triggered a political storm in the country.

Newspapers quoted Jaswant Singh’s book, as saying that Pakistan’s founder was ‘demonised in India’.

Jaswant Singh was elected from Darjeeling parliamentary constituency after the BJP extended its support to the call of Gorkhaland.

The Gorkha population in West Bengal is around one million out of 80 million people, although the overwhelming majority are concentrated in Darjeeling. (ANI)

Pak women become cautious after a legislator steals credit cards to buy jewellery

Lahore, July 14 (ANI): Women from all strata of Pakistani society have become cautious after a woman legislator belonging to PML-N Shumaila Rana allegedly stole credit cards and bought jewellery and clothes worth Rs 80,000 with it.

Police sources said the three PPC sections 420, 468 and 471 were added to the case of MPA Shumaila Rana for committing fraud and cheating the complainant woman.

Earlier, the case was registered against the accused MPA only under section 379 of PPC. he police investigators found fake signatures of the MPA on the receipt she received from a jewellery shop after purchasing jewellery on the stolen credit cards, the sources said.

Women visiting different health clubs, beauty parlours and gyms have demanded provision of separate lockers for the safety of their stuff, the Daily Times reported.

Zaib, a swimming pool and gym in-charge at a local club in Gulberg told Aaj Kal that Shumaila had committed a shameful act.

She accused the media of blowing the incident out of proportion and hence casting a bad impression on the viewers abroad.

Zaib said after the incident, women coming to the health club had become suspicious of fellow visitors.

She said most of the women coming to such clubs were well off and carried jewellery, cash and ATM cards in their bags.

Previously, the members would put away their stuff without any fear, but now they had become very cautious and demanded separate lockers, Zaib said.

“We will have to fulfil this genuine demand of our members in a next couple of days,” she added. (ANI)

Israel says it is clueless about US deadline on settlement freeze

Jerusalem, July 12 (ANI): Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon has said the Benjamin Netanyahu government has no knowledge of any six-month deadline given by the US for freezing settlement construction in the West Bank.

“We have no knowledge of this whatsoever,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Ayalon, as saying.

Earlier a Lebanon daily had quoted French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, as saying that if Israel failed to stop all Jewish construction in the West Bank within six-months, the US would end support for peace talks.

Kouchner reportedly expressed his fear that Israel’s “stubbornness, intentional foot-dragging and acquiescence to the Israel lobby” would convince the Americans to pull out of peace discussions altogether.

The French foreign minister was in Beirut on Friday for talks with senior Lebanese officials, including Hizbullah legislator Nawaf Musawi.

The meeting with Musawi was aimed at facilitating a new coalition government led by Prime Minister-designate Sa’ad Hariri. Hariri’s government is likely to include Hizbullah representation, though the Shi’ite group was defeated in national parliamentary elections.

Israel is opposed to Hizbullah joining the government.

Netanyahu’s advisor Mark Regev responded to the Kouchner-Musawi meeting by warning that “if Hizbullah joins the Lebanese government, then Lebanon as a country will be responsible for any Hizbullah aggression against Israel. That has to be clear.”

Kouchner’s meeting with a Hizbullah lawmaker is the latest in a string of European meetings with the group, which the US and the European parliament have recognized as a terrorist organization.

“Hizbullah is part of the parties that participated in the recent parliamentary elections. It is natural to meet with its representatives,” Kouchner told reporters.

“Lebanon is a democratic country; democracy implies we meet with opposition figures as well.” (ANI)

Bangalore bonds at first wine festival

Bangalore, July 10 (IANS) It was the perfect setting – the salubrious locales of Lalbagh Botanical Garden, accompanied by pleasant weather – the city could not have asked for more to kick-start its first wine festival Friday.
Connoisseurs got a chance to sample white, red and rose wines brewed in the state at the inaugural day of the three-day colourful fiesta, conceptualised by the Karnataka Wine Board on the lines of popular wine festivals in vogue in developed countries.

The festival was inaugurated by Horticulture Minister Umesh V. Katti and legislator D. Hemachandra Sagar.

“Wine is a healthy drink, if enjoyed in a moderate manner. Wine has very little alcohol percentage. It leaves drinkers with no hangover,” said L. Shantakumari Sunder, development commissioner and chairperson of the wine board.

Along with free tasting of wine, a seminar was part of the first day of the festival to educate farmers, industrialists and public about wine cultivation, production and contract farming.

Opportunities available in the state were also highlighted at the fiesta.

Wine lovers thronged the stalls of various wineries.

“We’re getting good response from the crowds. Visitors are very adventurous and want to taste different kinds of wines,” said Sunil Doshi, manning the stall of Kinvah, a winery based in Nandi Valley.

Added Jayakumar, senior marketing executive at Naka winery in Bangalore: “The festival is an eye-opener for wine makers, fruit cultivators and wine lovers.”

The visitors were clearly an excited lot.

“I accidentally bumped into the festival. But it’s a pleasant surprise and I am enjoying every glass of wine,” said Sussane D’Souza, a tourist from California.

IT professional Bittu Nair found it “simply fabulous”.

“It’s beyond my imagination to see large number of people getting an opportunity to enjoy wine under the sky,” Nair said.

Karnataka has 600 acres under grape cultivation, with Nandi Valley in Chikkaballapur and Krishna Valley in Bijapur with the highest cultivation.

The state also produces approximately 18 lakh litres of wine annually, second only to Maharashtra’s one crore litres. In 2008-09, Karnataka exported around three lakh litres to the rest of the country and abroad.

The government recently amended the Karnataka Excise (Lease of Rights to Retail Vend of Wine) Rules, 2008, to facilitate setting up of wine boutiques.

Shopping malls, super markets and multiplexes with not less than 15,000 square feet floor area will be allowed to have wine boutiques.

US to ensure every penny of Pak aid is utilized for intended purpose : Clinton

Washington, May 21 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the Obama administration would ensure that US aid to Pakistan is not diverted to any other channel, and is utilized only for the purpose it is meant for.

“The administration will make sure that there’s no diversion of money or any use of it other than what it is meant for,” The Dawn quoted Clinton, as saying.
Addressing the US Senate’s Appropriations Sub-committee on State and Foreign Operations, Clinton said she also supported a legislator’s proposal that conditions should be stringed to the assistance provided to Pakistan and Afghanistan to ensure that the money is used only for the purpose for which it is meant for.

Replying to a Democrat Senator Christopher Dodd’s query regarding speculations that Pakistan might be using the US aid to expand its nuclear capabilities or to buy weapons to be used against India, Clinton assured the Senate that the aid would not be misused.

“None of our aid will affect the efforts by Pakistan regarding their nuclear stockpile,” she said.

“The administration will make sure that there’s no ‘diversion of money or any use of it other than what it is meant for,” Clinton added.

Commenting on the heightened tension between India and Pakistan in the wake of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Clinton said Washington wants a cordial relationship between both countries.

“The US would like to see a reduction in India-Pakistan tensions and the resumption of the bilateral dialogue to give both a little more confidence in each other,” she said. (ANI)

Communist party demands action after its MLA attacked by Trinamool Congress

Kolkata, May 11 (ANI): The Communist Party has slammed the Trinamool Congress of West Bengal for allegedly attacking a woman legislator during an election meeting.

Chandana Ghoshdastidar, a legislator of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was seriously injured when alleged supporters of the Trinamool Congress, attacked her at Falta, 30 km from Kolkata during an election meeting.

Communist Party workers said that some party activists were also injured.

Brinda Karat, senior CPI (M) leader who came to visit Ghoshdastidar in the hospital, condemned the attack.

“We have demanded the government and the police to act immediately. What is the Trinamool Congress? What kind of culture do they want bring into West Bengal that an elected woman MLA should become a target like this? The administration and the police will take action,” Karat said.

Meanwhile, Pranab Mukherjee, a senior leader of the Congress, which is in pre-poll alliance with the Trinamool Congress, rapped the Communists for dreaming to form a government at the Centre. He said it would take them another 250 years to realize their dream.

“In 1952, the CPI (M) got 15 seats and that after increasing reached 60 in 2004. Now you can calculate how long they will take to reach 272. After that they should think to form a government. After another 250 years, they should think of that,” Mukherjee said.

The Congress has tied up with the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. The Communists are expected to face a tough fight after they angered many of its traditional rural voters over a land acquisition drive for industry. (ANI)
