Man City turn to Hungary’s Fulop to solve ‘keeper crisis

Manchester City have lined up Hungarian international Marton Fulop on loan from Premier League rivals Sunderland to resolve a goalkeeping crisis threatening their bid for a Champions League qualifying place.

A spokesman for the Abu Dhabi owned club said the 26-year-old was expected to join City for training later on Wednesday once the deal had been finalised.

Ireland international Shay Given, the club’s regular goalkeeper, was ruled out for the season after dislocating his shoulder in a 0-0 draw at Arsenal at the weekend.

The club’s reserve keeper Stuart Taylor is recovering from knee surgery which left only 23-year-old Gunnar Nielsen, who stood in on Saturday as the first player from the Faroe Islands to appear in the Premier League.

City also have Joe Hart on loan to Birmingham City but said they had failed to reach an agreement to recall him after talks on Tuesday.

Fulop is used to playing on loan — having had stints at Chesterfield, Coventry and Sunderland while on Tottenham Hotspur’s books and then joining Leicester and Stoke from Sunderland.

The Hungarian is expected to play against Aston Villa at home on Saturday. City have three games remaining and are sixth in the league, a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham and Villa and one ahead of Liverpool.

Tottenham want Pompey to pay up for Begovic non-transfer

Tottenham Hotspur are claiming a million pounds ($1.55 million) from Portsmouth for Bosnian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, even though he never signed for the London club and is now at Premier League rivals Stoke City.

A report by the administrator of FA Cup finalists Portsmouth, now relegated and 119 million pounds in debt, included Begovic on a list of transfer fees owed with the explanation ‘sell on fee Tottenham’ next to his name.

Tottenham said in a statement on Thursday that the money was due to them, but disputed the explanation given by the administrator.

“The statement contained within the Administrator’s report released yesterday… that it relates to a sell-on fee for Begovic, is inaccurate, as is the statement that the player was registered with Tottenham Hotspur,” the club said on their website (www.tottenhamhotspur.com).

Tottenham said they had agreed to the joint purchase in the January transfer window of French centre-back Younes Kaboul, who had previously been at Spurs, and Bosnian international Begovic.

“The transfer of Younes Kaboul was completed and Portsmouth pressed for an immediate payment in order to alleviate their cashflow situation,” added Tottenham.

“We were assured that the transfer of Begovic would be completed before the end of the transfer window.

“In order to assist Portsmouth with their financial difficulties we paid Portsmouth an agreed sum of money, whilst at the same time concluding an agreement that, should Begovic be sold or loaned to any Club other than ourselves, we would be repaid the sum of one million pounds.”

Begovic, Portsmouth’s number two keeper, subsequently moved to Stoke in a 3.25 million pound deal.

“Our intention had been to assist a fellow Club in financial difficulties whilst at the same time protecting our commercial position,” said Tottenham in the statement. “We shall continue to do the latter.”

Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou, whose report detailed creditors including the milkman, a local florist and a pie company, said he had no further information from what had been published.

“You can draw your own conclusions… if it’s due we’ll pay it. As a football club, they will be paid I have no doubt,” he told Reuters.

Liverpool”s Torres warns Champion League rivals that his best is yet to come

London, Mar.29 (ANI): Having scored 20 goals in the 2009-10 season so far, Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has rival Champions League chasers that his best is yet to come.

Black Cats boss Steve Bruce described him as ”unstoppable”.

But the Spanish sensation played down the plaudits.

“I”ve scored better goals and, hopefully, the best are still to come. For me it”s about keeping going and scoring more goals. That”s my job. We”re going the right way as a team. The last part of the season has been much better and now we have six games left to continue playing like this,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“We have to be as strong away as we are at home. You could see from the first minute this was a different team compared to the first part of the season. We have confidence now and you can see we are playing well. Now we have to try to win all our games, wait for the other results and see where it leaves us,” he added.

Torres was speaking after scoring two goals against the Black Cats on Sunday.

Bruce said: “Sometimes you have to admit you were beaten by a better team. When Torres and (Steven) Gerrard are in that sort of mood, it becomes very difficult for any side to contain them.”

Kop boss Rafa Benitez said: “It was a good display but this is a long race. Still, it was nice to see the fans and players go home with smiles on their faces.” (ANI)

Manchester United is Premier League title favourites: Ancelotti

London, Mar 22 (ANI): Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that Premier League rivals Manchester United is now favourite to win the title after his club slipped up again.

Days after being knocked out of the Champions League, the Blues saw their Premier League hopes dented by Sam Allardyce’s Blackburn.

El-Hadji Diouf headed Rovers level in the second half after the visitors had failed to build on the early lead given them by Didier Drogba’s 28th goal of the season.

And it means Chelsea are outside the top two for the first time since August and lie four points behind United, although they still have a game in hand.

Ancelotti admits his team have made it much more difficult for themselves and knows only a win will be enough when they travel to Portsmouth on Wednesday night, The Sun reports.

Asked whether United now had the advantage, he said: “They are top of the league now, so yes. We know we have to do better than this. We now have less probability of winning the title. We have made it more difficult for ourselves now – although it is not impossible. I still think we can do it.”

“We still have the ability to win this title but we have to be at our best. What we have to do now is stay as close to Manchester United as possible so that”s why our game at Portsmouth on Wednesday is so important,” he said.

Ancelotti admitted this was his worst week since taking charge at Stamford Bridge, but admitted his players are struggling to recover from their humbling by Manchester City last month. (ANI)

Chelsea bid for Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery

London, May 28 (ANI): Chelsea is locked in talks to sign Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery for 43-million pounds.

According to The Sun, the two clubs are believed to have agreed to the fee and Blues are now thrashing out terms with the 26-year-old French international midfielder.

Ribery is holding out for a bumper 125,000-pound-a-week salary after tax, but Chelsea are reluctant to offer more than 90,000-pounds-a-week.

If the Londoners do close the deal it will be a bitter blow to Premier League rivals Manchester United, who have long wanted the Frenchman as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.ullback Patrice Evra revealed in The Sun that he was hoping to persuade Ribery to join United. (ANI)

Tevez issues ‘come and get him’ plea to Man U rivals

London, May 10 (ANI): Argentinean Carlos Tevez has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Manchester United’s Premier League rivals by insisting that his career at Old Trafford is over.

The on-loan striker is angry at being left on the bench for long periods and claims United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t tried to sign him permanently.

Tevez’s shock bombshell will alert Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton and Aston Villa – while Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian’s company, which owns the player, has also received a 45 million pounds offer from a foreign club.

News of the World quoted Tevez as saying: “I am very sad about this but I guess what I’m saying is goodbye.”

“I don’t think I will be a Manchester United player next season. I have done everything I possibly can but they have never made me an offer so I have to leave. I think I will be at another club next season,” he added.

The Argentinean insists he wants to stay here.

He said: “I want to play in England because it is the best league in the world and it suits my style.” (ANI)

Man U’s Berbatov turns the heat on Barca

London, May 8 (ANI): Striker Dimitar Berbatov has turned up the heat on Champions League rivals Barcelona – by telling them most teams are scared of Manchester United.

The Bulgarian insists United will have no problems in the final if they can repeat Tuesday night’s display which tore Arsenal to shreds.

“We were a class, even two, above Arsenal. Most teams are afraid of us and if we play like we did against Arsenal, we will not have problems,” The Sun quoted Berbatov, as saying.

nited mid-fielder Michael Carrick said the showpiece final in Rome must not distract the team. (ANI)

Chelsea’s game is boring and fans are ghosts: Arsenal goalie

London, May 2 (ANI): Arsenal keeper Manuel Almunia launched a bitter attack on Champions League rivals Chelsea last night, branding their game as ‘boring’ and Blues fans as ‘ghosts’.

He also made it clear he would rather play Chelsea in the Euro final in Rome on May 27, as they would be much easier to beat than Barcelona.

“In the final I would want Chelsea. They are more predictable, whereas Barcelona has greater resources. We know what Chelsea is like. We have them measured. They wouldn’t surprise us,” The Sun quoted Almunia, as saying.

“Our semi-final, first leg with Manchester United was much better than Chelsea’s against Barcelona. Chelsea just went to Spain to defend and it made for a boring game. They showed that all they wanted was a 0-0 result.

“Our manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t know how to put a team together that isn’t going for a win. United wanted to seal the game at home but didn’t manage it and our morale is high. We have a great home record this season and I know we can get through to the final,” Almunia said.

Commenting on Chelsea fans, Almunia added: “They say their fans are ghosts. You don’t see or hear them. A lot of people travel with English teams and it surprised me that not many Chelsea supporters went to Spain for their tie with Barcelona.”

Almunia was the star of the show at Old Trafford in midweek, even though the Gunners ended up being beaten 1-0.

His heroics have given Wenger’s men the opportunity to do the business at home in the return on Tuesday and reach the final showdown in the Italian capital. (ANI)

‘Red’ Rooney plans to paint kid’s nursery with rival teams’ ‘blue’!

London, April 14 (ANI): Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is reportedly planning to make his unborn child’s nursery a shrine for his team’s Premier League rivals Everton – by painting it blue.

The father-to-be, who had been an Everton fan during his childhood and played for them until 2004, is allegedly making plans to cover the walls of his first child’s nursery with the rival club’s blue colour.

The acclaimed striker had apparently told his pals to expect royal blue carpets, snaps of the Goodison Park stands on the wallpaper and even the Everton club crest in the baby’s room.

“Wayne has been walking on cloud nine ever since the news – he and Coleen can’t wait,” the Sun quoted a club source as saying.

“The lads are all made up for him but Wazza insists the baby will follow Everton, no matter what,” the source added.

But if he turned out to be a father of a girl, then the 23-year-old may have to step back for his wife Coleen to decide the theme, as per sources.

The source added: “Coleen will definitely be having the last say though. If it’s a girl she will insist on a fairytale castle for her Little Princess.” (ANI)

Picking ManU playing 11 biggest nightmare for Ferguson

London, Feb 18 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said the whole squad is playing so well at the moment that it is proving a nightmare to choose the final 11 and tell some of his stars that they are left out.
Ferguson said: “Everyone has done so well that I’m beginning to dread picking the team. I feel guilty when I am forced to leave someone out who has not only done nothing wrong but who has played exceptionally well.”
“It puts the club in a strong position, of course, but it doesn’t make the manager’s job very easy,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Fergie has a big seven days ahead of him, in which he has to pick three teams.

Tonight, they take on Fulham, then it is Blackburn at home on Saturday followed by a Champions League crunch in the San Siro against Inter Milan next Tuesday.

He will want to field his strongest team against the Italian champions, but right now he admits to not knowing what that is.

Fergie said: “People sometimes ask me what I consider to be my best side and the short answer is that I don’t have one. I can give you my best 14 or 15 but, better than that, all I can say is that it’s a squad game and we have a damn fine squad. In fact the best!”

The Club World Cup is in the bag and Manchester United have a date at Wembley against Tottenham in the Carling Cup final on March 1.

Victory over Derby on Sunday booked them a trip to Swansea or Fulham in the FA Cup last eight.

And, tonight, they can go five points clear of nearest Premier League rivals Liverpool in their long-awaited game in hand. (ANI)
