SeaMicro Puts Netbook Processors to Work in Super-Green Web Server Computing

In tech time, three months is forever. At the end of March the end of March, we reported that researchers in Germany had developed an efficient supercomputer using discount parts intended for netbooks. And this week, previously stealth tech startup SeaMicro released a new high-performance server that puts that research to work.

SeaMicro’s SM10000 x86-server uses 512 Intel Atom processors — more commonly found in netbooks and other light-weight computing applications — to achieve massive computing power with a small energy footprint.

The server is optimized for performing internet-focused tasks, and CEO Andrew Feldman realized started work over three years ago on servers that would perform more efficiently for delivering thousands of small requests simultaneous rather than dealing with one big job at a time.

By shifting to smaller, more efficient processors in larger scale, SeaMicro says customers will save huge will lead to huge savings for customers: As the chart below shows, the lower the CPU utilization of the server, the more a company will save year over year, as unused processors are powered down to save energy.

Strasburg gets victory as Nationals dump Indians

(Reuters) – Stephen Strasburg followed his dazzling Major League Baseball debut with another steady performance to lead the Washington Nationals to a 9-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Sports

The 21-year-old power pitcher struck out eight batters and allowed two hits in 5-1/3 innings for his second win despite fighting control on the mound and walking five batters.

Strasburg, the most anticipated prospect in years, allowed just one run but was relieved in the sixth inning after walking consecutive batters to load the bases.

The Nationals gave Strasburg plenty of run support in the sixth as a two-run double from Ivan Rodriguez and a two-run triple by Ian Desmond gave Washington a 6-1 lead.

Strasburg delivered one of the best MLB debuts of all-time on Tuesday when he struck out 14 Pittsburgh batters and allowed just four hits, no walks and struck out the final seven batters he faced before being taken out of the game.

NBA – Magic stun Celtics to stay alive in series

The Orlando Magic again staved off elimination in the Eastern Conference final with a commanding and occasionally physical 113-92 win against the Boston Celtics in Game Five on Wednesday.

Two days after beating the Celtics 96-92 in an overtime thriller in Boston to stay alive, the Magic delivered a confident display on their home court to trail 3-2 in the best-of-seven series.

Guard Jameer Nelson top scored for Orlando with 24 points while muscular center Dwight Howard weighed in with 21 points, along with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Rasheed Wallace contributed 21 points to lead the way for Boston, who had appeared to have the series firmly in control after winning the first two games in Orlando.

Game Six is in Boston Friday when the Celtics need just one more win to advance to the NBA finals.

“It was our best offensive night of the series,” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy told reporters after his team had shot slightly better than 52 percent from the floor.

“Obviously in Game Six we will need to be even better at both ends. We have a huge, huge challenge in front of us but it’s a challenge we worked hard to get to.”

No NBA team has ever won a playoff series after losing the first three games but Nelson said the Magic were banking on pulling off a miracle through sheer self-belief.

MAKING HISTORY

“We just all believe,” he added.

“We know we can do it one game at a time. We know we didn’t play our best in the first three games, but that’s behind us. We are trying to make history.”

A difficult night for the Celtics became even worse when they lost starting center Kendrick Perkins shortly before the end of the first half when he was ejected after picking up two technical fouls, his sixth and seventh of the postseason.

Unless the league rescinds one of the technicals, Perkins will face a mandatory one-game suspension.

The Celtics raced 5-0 up early on before the Magic took control with a scintillating three-point display to lead 31-27 after the first quarter.

Guard JJ Redick and Mickael Pietrus each added a pair of three-pointers as Orlando charged 14 ahead midway through the second period before holding a 57-49 advantage by half-time.

The Celtics were also deprived of Perkins’s replacement, Glen Davis, when he suffered concussion after being accidently struck by Howard’s elbow just before the end of the third quarter.

Leading 84-75 going into the final period, the Magic steadily pulled even further away to keep alive their hopes of reaching the NBA finals for a second year in a row.

“They played a great game tonight,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of the Magic. “They are a great team when they get a lead because then those threes (three-pointers) are easy. I never thought we applied any real pressure.”

Stressful job can increase risk of asthma

London May 27 (IANS) Being part of a stressful job can increase a person’s risk of developing asthma by 40 percent, reveals a new study.

The research led by Heidelberg University in Germany tracked 5,000 men and women aged between 40 and 65 over eight years. They found that among those free of asthma at the start of the project, there was up to a 40 percent higher incidence of asthma eight years later if they suffered stress at work.

The signs were long working hours, demanding schedules and uncomfortable working conditions.

‘Our study suggests work stress and the inability to relax after work are associated with an increased risk of asthma,’ dailymail.co.uk quoted the report as saying.

Earlier studies have shown stress can lead to the release of chemicals that promote allergies and disrupt the way the body halts inflammation of the airways.

However, the team stressed that the absolute risk of someone developing asthma because they are overloaded at work is still very small.

The study appears in journal Allergy.

Wozniacki shrugs off injury to waltz through in Paris

Danish third seed Caroline Wozniacki showed no signs of her recent injury troubles with a 6-0 6-3 demolition of Russia’s Alla Kudryavsteva in the French Open first round on Monday.

The U.S Open runner-up burst out of the blocks and wrapped up the first set in just 25 minutes under the blazing sun on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Kudryavtseva, the world number 78, stopped the rot by winning the eighth game and had the audacity to break for a 2-1 lead before Wozniacki, 19, restored order, making the decisive break in game eight for a 5-3 lead.

She sealed the win after an hour and nine minutes when the Russian netted a backhand service return. She now plays Germany’s Kristina Barrois or Italy’s Tathiana Garbin for a place in the third round. (Editing by Miles Evans; To query or comment on this story emailsportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Venus outguns Schnyder to advance in Paris

Second seed Venus Williams took the first step towards a maiden French Open title when she outgunned Patty Schnyder 6-3 6-3 in the first round on Sunday.

Venus, who lost the 2002 final to sister Serena, could have expected a trickier match against Schnyder but the wily Swiss has been struggling with injury and she eased to the opening set in 32 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Wearing a risque dark outfit that resembled a nightdress, Venus broke in game eight of the second to lead 5-3 and she eventually served out for victory in an hour and 20 minutes, sealing the win with a forehand winner.

She now plays Japanese qualifier Kurumi Nara or Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain for a place in the third round.
