Govt. to help grant 150,000 illegal Indian citizens Italian citizenship: Krishna

Istanbul (Turkey), Sep.18 (ANI): In a unique landmark exercise, the Indian Government has undertaken a massive action plan to help over 150,000 illegal Indian immigrants acquire Italian citizenship within the next fortnight.

Revealing this information exclusively to ANI TV, Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said the Italian Government has given New Delhi fifteen days to formalise the required documentation.

Krishna further revealed that about 50 percent of the over 150,000 illegal Indians hailed from Punjab and a majority of them were doing odd jobs in agricultural farms in Italy.e said the Indian Government has taken the matter up with Italy and the latter has agreed to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants.

Krishna told ANI TV that he has ordered officials from Punjab to reach Italy to facilitate the process, adding that P.M. Meena, a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, would oversee the whole exercise.

The External Affairs Ministry would be issuing over 75,000 thousand passports in the next ten days to formalise a process which is unique anywhere in the world, he disclosed.

There are three types of illegal immigrants (a) those who have left India on their own passport with short term visa and have overstayed after expiry of visa; (b) those who have left India on their own passport to a transit country like Ukraine, or Russia etc. but stayed in Italy without passport or visa and (c) those who have left on some else’s passport or under a fake identity and entered Italy illegally. Study on sheep shows link between personality, survival, and reproductive success

Washington, September 16 (ANI): Canadian researchers have established a link between personality, survival, and reproductive success by carrying out a study on male bighorn sheep.

Denis Reale, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at UQAM and Canada Research Chair in Behavioural Ecology, says that the new study offers insight into personality differences in animals and humans, from an evolutionary perspective.

Since 1969, several teams of researchers have been studying this population of bighorn sheep in Alberta, Canada. They have collected considerable data over the years.

Working in collaboration with researchers from the University of Sherbrooke and the University of Alberta, Reale identified the rams in terms of boldness and docility.

The researchers then conducted paternity tests to determine which rams were reproducing.

They point out that in a system like that of bighorn sheep where there is strong competition among the males for impregnating females, large size and high dominance status are normally key factors in a male’s success.

Males usually attain these conditions in the prime of life, between 6 and 12 years, the researchers say.

However, the paternity tests showed that some young males manage to fertilize females.

The researchers also concentrated on the risk associated with participation in the rut-males can be injured or fall from a cliff in fighting.

Reale and his colleagues hypothesized that the young males that manage to reproduce would be the boldest and most combative, and analysis of the data confirmed it.

However, in exchange for sexual precocity and risk-taking, these rams often die younger than their more docile peers. The latter, instead, invest in the long term, breed later and reach an older age.

Based on their observations, the researchers came to the conclusion that their findings indicate a variation in the personalities and life histories of the population, with two extreme types: one that could be characterised as “live fast and die” and the other as “slow and steady wins the race”.

Depending on their personality, the males managed to breed and to transmit their genes, but in different ways.

The study demonstrates that personality has a direct influence on the lifestyle of individuals.

A research article describing the study has been published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology. (ANI)

Demi Moore threatens to sue blogger Perez Hilton over daughter’s pics

Washington, September 4 (ANI): Hollywood actress Demi Moore has threatened to sue celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, after she spotted a link on the latter’s site directing viewers to a set of “inappropriate” pictures of her teen daughter Tallulah.

The 15-year-old is the youngest of Demi’s three daughters with ex-husband Bruce Willis.

According to reports, the snaps Demi is angry at show the teen baring her chest in a revealing top, and wearing a tiny pair of shorts.

Moore has expressed her disgust about the pictures on her Twitter.com page, accusing the blogger of flouting child pornography laws.

“Expect another letter from my attorney, kitten,” Contactmusic quoted her as having written.

Moore goes on to rage about Hilton’s “exploitation” of teens in a series of furious posts.

She wrote: “Clearly Perez Hilton isn’t taking violating child pornography laws very seriously. He might not but there are a lot of people who do! Anyone who advertises follows or supports Perez supports violating child pornography laws!”

She further wrote: “Let me ask all of you, what is it called when someone is telling people to look and focus on a child’s ‘boobs and ass’ while providing photos? (It’s) child pornography! Or just being a general pervert/creep. Disgusting! This is not a game. Children should not be exploited. They must be protected.”

Hitting back at Morre, Hilton called her comments “libellous, defamatory, inaccurate and stupid.”

In a post on his own Twitter.com page, he writes: “Thanks for drawing MORE attention to your daughter’s behaviour and your parenting skills (or lack thereof). U r (sic) real smart! That is CLEARLY not child porn. And I didn’t even post those on my site! I would not let my 15 year old daughter dress like that under ANY context. You are delusional and slightly senile!” (ANI)

Ancient Indus Valley script might soon be decoded by computer program

Sydney, August 29 (ANI): A recent research has determined that an ancient, indecipherable text from the Indus Valley civilization is being decoded with the help of a computer program.

According to a report by ABC News, though it has yet to decrypt this mysterious language, the program may help to decipher other ancient texts whose meanings have been long since forgotten.

“The computer program operates on sequences of symbols, so it can be used to learn a statistical model of any set of unknown or known texts,” said Rajesh Rao, University of Washington professor of computer science and co-author of the research paper.

“In fact, such statistical models have been used to analyze a wide variety of sequences ranging from DNA and speech to economic data,” he added.

Roughly 5,000 seals, tablets and amulets, filled with about 500 different symbols, were created somewhere between 2600 and 1900 B.C. by a people living in the Indus River Valley.

Despite numerous attempts to decipher the symbols, a full translation has long eluded scientists.

In fact, one recent paper even cast doubt on whether the Indus Valley script was even a written text at all, but rather political or religious symbols.

To start the search for what meaning the text might hold, American and Indian scientists input the symbols into a computer program and ran a statistical analysis of the symbols and where they appear in the texts.

With that information, the program can do many things including creating new, hypothetical Indus Valley texts, fill in missing symbols in existing texts, and tell the scientist if a particular text has been generated by their computer model.

“We used the latter to show that the Indus texts that have been discovered in West Asia are statistically very different from the texts found in the Indus Valley, suggesting that the Indus people used their script to represent different content or language when living in a foreign land,” said Rao.

For now, however, the Indus Valley script, along with many other ancient texts, remains indecipherable, but scientists are hopeful that computers will eventually decode the symbols on them.

“I am however optimistic that given a few more years, we may be able to at least narrow down the language family of the script by using computer analysis to gain an in-depth understanding of the underlying grammar,” said Rao. (ANI)

And after the latest incident involving her, Robertson was arrested at her St Kilda apartment, and charged with assault.

The former call girl and undercover police officer allegedly injured an associate so badly that the latter received facial injuries, outside a Barkly St restaurant on August 16.

Lockerbie bomber once again declares his innocence

Tripoli (Libya), Aug.22 (ANI): Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the man accused of perpetrating the bombing of a Pan Am Flight 103 that claimed 270 lives in 1988 in Lockerbie, southern Scotland, has once again proclaimed his innocence.

In an interview to The Times at his house, in the Dimachk area of Tripoli, al-Megrahi who was released by the Scottish authorities earlier this week on grounds of ill health, said: ” I always believed I would come back if justice prevailed.”

He did not come across as bitter or angry but continued to insist on his innocence, as he has done from the day of his conviction. He abandoned his appeal, he said, not because he was guilty but to give himself the best possible chance of going home before he died.

He had applied to be freed on compassionate grounds and also to be transferred to a Libyan prison under the terms of an agreement Britain and Libya signed in April.

One of the conditions of the latter was that all legal proceedings had to be finished.

He denied reports that he had been pressured to drop the appeal by a Scottish or British government terrified that such a hearing would expose a grave miscarriage of justice, but he added: “If there is justice in the UK I would be acquitted or the verdict would be quashed because it was unsafe. There was a miscarriage of justice.”

Al-Megrahi promised that before he died he would present new evidence through his Scottish lawyers that would exonerate him.

“My message to the British and Scottish communities is that I will put out the evidence and ask them to be the jury,” he said. He refused to elaborate.

Asked who, then, was responsible for the deaths of 270 people who died in the Lockerbie bombing, al-Megrahi smiled. “It’s a very good question but I’m not the right person to ask.”

He insisted that it was not Libya and would not be drawn on suggestions that it was Syria, Iran or the Palestinians.

He said that he understood why many of the victims’ relatives were angry at his release.

“They have hatred for me. It’s natural to behave like this,” he said, although he pointedly added that others had written to him in prison to say that they forgave him whether he was guilty or innocent.

“They believe I’m guilty which in reality I’m not. One day the truth won’t be hiding as it is now. We have an Arab saying: ‘The truth never dies’.”

Meanwhile, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saif, has claimed that al Megrahi’s release was linked to trade deals between Britain and Libya.

Saif al Islam Gaddafi said that Megrahi’s return was a “victory” for all Libyans.

According to The Telegraph, he made the claims in a television interview for Libyan television recorded as he accompanied Megrahi on the flight back from Scotland to Libya on Thursday.

The UK government has vehemently denied the claims.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “There is no deal. All decisions relating to Megrahi’s case have been exclusively for Scottish ministers, the Crown Office in Scotland and the Scottish judicial authorities.” (ANI)

‘I have no discord with Flintoff,’ says Strauss

London, Aug.19 (ANI): England cricket captain Andrew Strauss has refuted suggestions and allegations of him having a discord with all-rounder Andrew Flintoff because of the latter’s omission from the fourth Ashes Test at Leeds, saying both players understood each other well, and would be going into the fifth and final Ashes Test with all guns firing.

Stating that the England camp was in harmony, and adding that there was great excitement going into the Oval Test, Strauss said: “I’ve spoken to ‘Fred’ about the whole situation. We both know where each other stands on it – and it’s just not an issue between us.”

“At this stage of a tour, maybe people try to create things out of nothing – from in our ranks, there is not an issue there at all,” The Independent quoted him, as saying.

Strauss said that he understood Flintoff’s disappointment over not playing the fourth Test.

“You can understand why he’d be disappointed. It’s his last couple of Tests, so he’s dying to play. I think he understood the situation in terms of what we needed from him. With the doctors’ advice, we felt he wasn’t going to be in a position to give us that for that Test match – on the back of a lot of bowling previous to that,” Strauss said.

Asked about Flintoff’s well-being, Strauss reported: “It looks very promising. He’s had some good time off; the swelling has gone down; we’re happy with what he’s done – things are looking pretty good. He got it through (in the nets) as he normally does. We’re very encouraged by what we’ve seen so far.

“He’s obviously a massive player for us. We’re very fortunate to have a guy of that quality in our side – especially one that tends to ‘up’ his performances against Australia. Going into a must-win game like this, I’m far more comfortable as captain seeing his name on the team sheet,” he added.

“We all want him to go out in a blaze of glory,” Strauss confirmed. (ANI)

Gazza pays heartfelt tribute to ex-manager Bobby Robson

London, Aug.15 (ANI): Troubled former British soccer star Paul Gascoigne paid a heartfelt tribute to Sir Bobby Robson on Friday, saying that the latter had saved his life.

Re-emphasising the fact that he always saw Robson as his second father, Gazza said the former England manager played a significant part in his fight against addiction and mental illness.

“I know that Sir Bobby is up there now, looking down, thinking that I’m still daft as a brush. But you know what? He’s still got his arm around my shoulders and he always will have,” The Sun quoted Gazza, 42, as saying.

He revealed that he was so grief-stricken after Sir Bobby’s death last month that he was dealing with his grief by listening to Van Morrison songs – and writing poetry non-stop.

His pieces include one written on hotel notepaper that pays tribute to the “great man” and father figure he first met when he was just 12.

Gazza also said he was no longer afraid of death after seeing his mentor’s courage as he finally succumbed to cancer after a 17-year battle against the disease.

Gazza said: “I couldn’t have dealt with all the problems without the help of a lot of people. My family obviously come first, but a close second was Sir Bobby. He was always there for me, whatever sort of trouble I was in.” (ANI)

‘Drones may kill leaders but not eliminate the Taliban’

Lahore, Aug. 8 (ANI): The US missile strike that killed Baitullah Mehsud may not be sufficient to eliminate the Taliban from Pakistan’s tribal belt.

The terror outfit has intertwined the ethnic identity, religion and politics with extremism, and it will take decades to undo, the Guardian reports.

Behind the rise of Pak-Taliban chief Mehsud in Pakistan lie factors that are not going to be resolved easily.

“Firstly, there is the fusion of Pashtun tribal identity with a radical Islamic identity. The latter has only ever really thrived when grafted onto a sense of local belonging. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were Pashtuns from the Pakistani side of the frontier that has split their tribal lands for over a century,” the report said.

Second issue is that the Pashtun tribes of the FATA have the lowest levels of literacy, economic development and infrastructural development of anywhere in Pakistan, it observed.

They are not considered full citizens. Pushed to the margins, they are, in one sense, trying to fight their way into the centre of national political and economic life, the report added.

Finally, there is religious homogeneity: the conservative southwest Asian Deobandi strand of Sunni Islam that has established itself with its system of mosques and free schools across the region, it says.

Put all this together and it is fairly clear that drones may tackle symptoms but not causes. It is also clear why, as my colleague Declan Walsh points out elsewhere on this site, another Mehsud may well emerge soon, it concludes. (ANI)

Michelle Braun makes 90s Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss ‘look like Mary Poppins’

New York, Jun 26 (ANI): A new madam has come to Hollywood and she is said to be making many quake in their shoes, as she has entered into a plea deal with the FBI.

Michelle Braun is said to be the next Heidi Fleiss, who is an American former madam, and the only difference between them is that the former holds more power than the latter, reports the Herald Sun.

“They say she makes nineties Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss look like Mary Poppins,” the Daily Mail stated.

Braun has admitted to operating a vice ring that sold call girls at very expensive rates to very, very prominent people.

The girls, many of whom were models, actresses or Playboy centrefolds, could fetch nearly 50,000 dollars per night for sex, while Fleiss’ girls only got about 10,000 dollars per night.

Their clients allegedly included prominent celebrities, politicians and businesspeople.

“Let’s just say you’d be shocked,” the New York Daily News quoted Marc Nurik, Braun’s lawyer, as saying about the identities of her clients.

Braum reportedly raked in more than 8 million dollars for this venture, and she is said to have charged men roughly 1,600 dollars just to look at the pictures of the girls on her Web site.

Her business would have gone on undisturbed had she not made some suspicious comments to Rolling Stone.

“All I do is make the introductions between famous girls and rich guys who want to meet them,” she had said.

The FBI finally caught Braun when she agreed to fly one of her girls to New York to meet with a man, who was actually an undercover agent. (ANI)

Why Musharraf’s memoirs’ Punjabi version of never saw the light of day

Islamabad, June 22 (ANI): The Punjabi version of Pervez Musharraf’s much debated book ‘In the Line of Fire’ has remained an untold story, as it was caught in the firing-line of Pakistani politics’ shifting loyalties, The Nation reports.

The story dates back to those days when former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi used to say that Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid would get former President Pervez Musharraf elected ten times in uniform.

In 2007, Musharraf’s ‘In the Line of Fire’ was selling like hot cakes in the national and international market, and Elahi decided that the book of his boss should be translated in Punjabi, and released an amount of money for the purpose while he was holding office.

“As per decided scheme of things, a Professor of Sargodha University had to translate the book with the title ‘Baldian Bhanwan’ (burning fires) while famous Ferozsons (Pvt) Limited had to carry the responsibility for publishing it,” The Nation quoted sources, as saying.

The translation of Musharraf’s book was still underway when the tenure of PML-Q government ended in November 2007, they added.

“Then the days changed and after humiliating defeat of PML-Q in February 2008 elections, Chaudhrys distanced themselves from Musharraf, particularly when the latter asked them to quit the central command of the party. Elahi withheld funds which he was supposed to release from his personal pocket for the translation and publishing of the Punjabi version of Musharraf’s memoir,” sources said.

With the resignation of Pervez Musharraf in August 2008, the chapter closed forever, they added.

Notably, Musharraf’s book has been translated in Hindi and Tamil.(ANI)

How Prince William gained insight into violent street culture

London, June 21 (ANI): Prince William has made it known for the first time how his private meetings with former street gang members helped him pick valuable pointers from them.

The royal revealed he had met former gang members through his links to charities and understands their struggle to earn “respect”.

“Former gang members have told me that it is precisely to find status, respect from others and the role in a community that we all crave that led them to fall in with gangs in the first place,” The Telegraph quoted him as saying in his article for the newspaper.

“One enduring feature of all gangs – and teams – is that they survive on mutual support. They allow their members to earn respect by obeying the rules, and they share clear objectives.

“Essentially, they allow the individual to belong. As such, the fundamental difference – so far as I can see – between violent street gangs and cohesive teams of contented young people is the destructive violence of the former set against the constructive comradeship of the latter.

“The challenge, therefore, seems to me to be to how turn gang members into team members,” he added.

William, who turns 27 today, is presently training to be a search and rescue pilot. (ANI)
