Drogba confirmed in Ivory Coast team

(Reuters) – Didier Drogba returns to the starting lineup for the Ivory Coast against Brazil in their World Cup Group G match Sunday.

Sports

The Ivory Coast captain and leading scorer broke his forearm in a friendly against Japan in Switzerland just over two weeks ago and came on as a substitute in the goalless draw against Portugal wearing a protective plastic cast.

Drogba replaced Gervais Kouassi, the only change in the Elephants’ starting line-up.

Brazil named the same team which struggled to a 2-1 win over in their opening match last Tuesday.

Kaka, who is still not 100 percent fit after an injury-plagued season, was included in the starting line-up although coach Dunga said on the eve of the match that it was not certain whether he would play the whole game.

Nadal halts Federer’s run as world number one

(Reuters) – French Open champion Rafael Nadal toppled Roger Federer from the top of the ATP world rankings on Monday, leaving the ousted Swiss tantalizingly short of equaling Pete Sampras’s record time as world number one.

Sports

Federer, beaten in the quarter-finals by Sweden’s Robin Soderling at Roland Garros last Tuesday, dropped to second just one week short of matching the American’s record total of 286 weeks as number one.

Nadal last held the number one slot on June 29, last year.

The 24-year-old Spaniard’s 6-4 6-2 6-4 defeat of Soderling Sunday handed him a fifth French Open title and also made him the first player to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour finals in London in November.

Soderling moved up one place in the rankings to a career-high sixth while Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro, who missed the French Open while he recovers from wrist surgery, dropped to eighth.

Dump search fails to uncover murder clues

A police search of three Sydney rubbish dumps is yet to uncover any clues to help investigators hunting for the killer of nurse Michelle Beets.

Ms Beets, 57, was stabbed to death on the front verandah of her Chatswood home last Tuesday night.

Police received information on Tuesday suggesting the killer may have dumped evidence in a Chatswood bin the day after the attack.

More than 50 police officers spent yesterday sifting through garbage at tips in Artarmon, Lucas Heights and Eastern Creek.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mick Sheehy says there is about 300 tonnes of rubbish to comb through.

“At this stage I can say there has been no items located which we can suggest are connected to this crime,” he said.

“I’m not going to speculate or comment on what items it is we are searching for.”

Detective Sheehy said the search will continue throughout the night.

Police have described Ms Beets’s murder as callous and vicious.

A funeral for the Royal North Shore Hospital emergency nurse is expected to be held later this week.

Detectives have been looking for a man seen running from the scene with a green hooded top and a backpack. So far nobody has been arrested.

Mourinho celebrates ‘most beautiful defeat’

Barcelona, April 29 (DPA) Defensively strong Inter Milan battled their way into the final of the Champions League Wednesday by losing only 1-0 away to defending champions Barcelona.

Inter go into the final – in which they will face Bayern Munich in Madrid on May 22 – on a 3-2 aggregate after beating the Catalans 3-1 in San Siro last Tuesday.

It will be Inter’s first final since 1972, they have not won the European crown since 1965.

Defender Gerard Pique scored the only goal just six minutes from time, but Inter managed to avoid a second goal in a frenetic finale.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho, as provocative and theatrical as always, provoked the jeers of the Camp Nou with his wild celebrations at the end.

He then raised eyebrows by saying that ‘it is impossible that I become coach of Barcelona one day, because here they hate me.’ Mourinho was translator and then assistant coach at Barca from 1996 to 1998 – under present Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal – and is now clearly enjoying the role of anti-hero.

The Portuguese coach added that ‘it has been the most beautiful defeat of my life…Without organization we would have been eliminated. It is always difficult to play 10 against 11, but against Bar it is almost impossible.’

Inter captain Javier Zanetti said that ‘we really deserve to be in the final. We have worked very hard indeed in both matches. This is the proof that we are a good team. The important thing is that we are in the final.’

Inter striker Samuel Eto’o, who was the idol of the Barca fans from 2004 to 2009, said that ‘I thought the game was never going to end, it was interminable.’

He added, rather surprisingly, that ‘Barca are still the best team in the world and we have needed all of our qualities, in two matches, to eliminate them.’

For his part, Barca president Joan Laporta said that ”we just could not score the second goal that would have taken us to the final.’

Laporta added that ‘we now concentrate on winning the league, that is what our people deserve.’

Barca are just one point ahead of Real Madrid with four matches left.

Barca midfielder Yaya Toure commented that ‘I have never seen a team so defensive as this Inter.’

He also complained that the ‘goal’ of Bojan disallowed right at the end because of a supposed handball by himself ‘was not handball at all.’

Winger Pedro said that ‘this is a pity…We knew that they were going to defend in strength, but to go out like this makes you angry.’

Mourinho’s team had a surprisingly comfortable time in the Camp Nou, especially given that midfielder Thiago Motta was sent off after just 28 minutes.

This meant that Inter had to play out more than an hour with ten men, but they did so with calm efficiency and with surprisingly few scares. They were faultless in defence and managed to break up Barca’s rhythm with countless fouls and interruptions.

Barca were even slower, ponderous and predictable than in the first leg. Playmaker Xavi was well controlled, Lionel Messi turned in another dull display – and Zlatan Ibrahimovic looked unfit and out of sorts.

Mourinho had planned to employ the same 4-3-3 formation as in the first leg but striker Goran Pandev pulled a muscle in the pre-match warm-up and Christian Chivu was brought in to make a 5-3-2 lineup.

Inter moved even further back into their defensive shell when Motta was shown a straight red card, for a hand in the face of Sergio Busquets.

Mourinho pulled forwards Diego Milito and Samuel Eto’o back to play as effective full-backs, meaning that Barca enjoyed 75 per cent possession – but without taking advantage of it.

All that the hosts had to show for their possession in the second half was two wide shots from winger Pedro and a low drive from Messi which Inter keeper Julio Cesar did well to get down to.

Pep Guardiola brought on Maxwell, Bojan and Jeffren but still lacked the craft, speed and imagination to open up a packed defence.

Inter were content to soak up the pressure and shamelessly waste time, waiting for the clock to run down on Barca’s reign as European champions.

Barca’s frustration led to a series of hopeful long shots, none of which troubled Julio Cesar.

There was nothing that the Brazilian could do, however, when Pique scored in the 84th minute. Xavi played the tall defender through, in a marginally offside position. Pique skipped past Ivan Cordoba and calmly made it 1-0.

But time was about to run out for Barca, who failed to score the necessary second goal in a desperate finale.

Pay restrictions behind ILFC CEO’s exit -WSJ

NEW YORK, March 28 (Reuters) – The departure of the head of American International Group Inc’s (AIG.N) aircraft leasing unit was driven partly by U.S. pay restrictions imposed on the insurer, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

Stocks | Regulatory News | Bonds | Financials

AIG, which is nearly 80 percent owned by the government after a $182.3 billion taxpayer-funded rescue, said late on Friday that International Lease Finance Corp Chief Executive John Plueger retired.

Plueger’s exit came less than two months after former CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy, who founded ILFC, left after an unsuccessful bid to buy part of the aircraft lessor’s fleet. [ID:nN04104420]

AIG named ILFC Chief Financial Officer Alan Lund as interim president and CEO, while it conducts a search for a permanent successor. It also named ILFC Fred Cromer, senior vice president for finance, to succeed Lund as ILFC CFO.

Last Tuesday, Kenneth Feinberg, the Obama administration’s pay czar, clamped down on 2010 pay at five U.S. firms that still depend on a government lifeline, including AIG.

Feinberg said at the time that his burdensome restrictions were not sending talented workers fleeing for the exits. [ID:nN23255471]

Politics and affection

There is an old saying about kids in kindergarten. When a young boy pulls a girl’s hair it is actually a sign of affection.

That saying crystallised recently in parliament as the Liberal’s Peter Collier and Labor’s Ljiljanna Ravlich ripped into each other through a series of parliamentary Question Time sparring sessions.

It is always entertaining when politicians dislike each other, more so when the repugnance is so strong, that they may actually like each other.

At least that’s what it seemed like this week up the ‘hill’.

The Collier/Ravlich rivalry is fast becoming WA’s version of the relationship between Tony ‘Punch’ Abbott and Julia ‘Judy’ Gillard.

The tension resonates each time Question Time rolls around.

Last Tuesday was a prime example. Protestors rallying over a much more serious matter disrupted parliament and were ejected from the house. When proceedings resumed the Labor MP was standing ready with her question, leading one Government member to note that the ‘real’ trouble was about to begin.

The dispute was actually quite minor: Ms Ravlich claimed the number of apprentices in training had fallen under the current government. Mr Collier says she got the numbers wrong. Then the fun started. The Minister for Training attempted to answer the question while his opposite number sat coiled like a spring and yapped insults across the chamber. “You’ve got no idea, I’m going to prove you wrong sunshine,” she barked.

The Minister, a former school teacher, sighed deeply and forgot every lesson he had given on bullying.

“Mr President everyone involved in this matter is trying to work together to get the best result, except that is for little Ms Nelly No Friends over here!”

In a former life Mr Collier was also a professional tennis coach and it is just as well, as Ravlich hurled an indecipherable volley of abuse across the chamber at the Minister.

The next day was no better. Ms Ravlich continued to bang on about apprentice trainees. The abuse rose to a crescendo, leaving the President of the upper house Barry House to put things in perspective: “I’m not sure what it is about you two but you bring out the worst in each other and it’s having a negative influence on some of the other members.”

The Minister was forced to revert to his old student manual as he worked his way through Ms Ravlich’s question. Each time she interjected he would extend his palm in a ‘stop’ motion, exclaiming “Ah!” At one stage I thought he was going to reprimand the Labor MP for ‘hands on head’ until he had finished.

If Mr Collier was playing teacher, then the rest of the chamber was doing its best to play the part of unruly students.

“Someone misses being a school teacher,” Labor’s Ken Travers whined across the house, met by an equally lame “Someone missed being in Government” from Transport Minister Simon O’Brien. “I know you are, you said you are.”, and so on.

Politics and affection? Oil and Water.

“Fear factor” fired me to score more frequently for Chelsea, says Lampard

London, Aug 22(ANI): Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has said that the fear of being sold or knocked out of The Blues fired him up to score more frequently.

Lampard equalled Jimmy Greaves record in the club’s all time goal charts, when he scored a penalty in the 3-1 victory over Sunderland last Tuesday, taking his goals tally to 132 in his eight-year career at the club.

The 31-year-old further admitted that he never dreamed of such a strike rate when he first arrived in west London, but knew that he had to up his game when Roman Abramovich took control of the club in 2003.

“Abramovich’s first year was a big year for me, I started to score more frequently. I think it was the fear factor a bit as no one knew whether they would be sold or knocked out of the team,” The Sun quoted Lampard, as saying.

“I really took it on board,” he added.

Lampard achieved his feat in 429 matches, since joining Chelsea from West Ham United in 2001.

“It is a great honour to be up there with Jimmy Greaves, one of the all-time great goalscorers. I’m very proud. I would not have imagined I’d have got to that level when I came to Chelsea,” Lampard said.

“I’ve got my eye on who is above me. Peter Osgood and Roy Bentley are 150 – not that I’ve been looking at the stats! Kerry Dixon is 193 and Bobby Tambling is 202. That feels a long way off but I’ll keep plugging away,” he added.

Lampard has scored many memorable goals for the team, but his all-time favourite remains the strike which helped Chelsea win the 2005 Premier League title.

“My favourite goal was the one that won us the league at Bolton. It wasn’t technically the best, but it was such a special one for me and the club. I watch it now and again and when I do, it gives e shivers,” he said. (ANI)

Pak military taking history lessons to ‘Get Baitullah’

Lahore, June 30 (ANI): In a bid to make its ‘Get Baitullah’ mission successful, the Pakistan Army is paying heed to lessons learnt by the British military some 70 year ago in Waziristan.

When the British went to war against Waziristan tribesmen more than 70 years ago, the ensuing guerrilla conflict lasted more than a decade. The British never captured the renegade leader and finally withdrew from the region.

Now, the Pakistan Army is trying to isolate Baitullah Mehsud before sending its troops into battle.

“We are trying to shape the environment before we move in for the fight. We are also trying to minimise the loss of life. Ours is the only institution that can stand up to the militants, but public support is crucial. When we do move in, it must be only against Baitullah and his group. We cannot afford to provoke a tribal uprising,” the Daily Times quoted Major General Athar Abbas, as saying. owever, the results have not been very satisfactory.

Last Tuesday, a Mehsud loyalist assassinated a key pro-government tribal leader and US drone strikes killed 46 people at the funeral of a slain Mehsud commander.

The delay in launching a full operation is giving Mehsud plenty of time to gather support.

According to sources, the military is concerned about being pushed into the new campaign too soon after the Swat campaign.

They added that there were also concern in the military that the US drone attacks were killing only a few important militant figures but stoking anti-American sentiment throughout the tribal region.

General Abbas said he would not say how soon the ground operation in Waziristan would begin.

However, he said, “We are dealing with a lot of complexities and constraints. We can only go so far without hurting our long-term interests.” (ANI)

Infomercial King Billy Mays – Billy Mays – Billy Mays dead – Billy Mays Death – Billy Mays Died – Billy Mays Dies – Billy Mays Passed Away – Infomercial King Billy Mays passes away at age of 50 – RIP Billy Mays

“Infomercial King” Billy Mays has passed away, according to Fox Tampa Bay, Florida. He is most commonly known as the salesperson promoting OxiClean in the United States.

According to the reports, Billy Mays may have been a passenger on a US Airways commercial aircraft that made an emergency flat landing on Saturday in Tampa. The US Airways Boeing 737′s front tires blew on landing Saturday at noon, causing the aircraft’s nose to smash into the runway.

The aircraft accident may have caused a bump to the head and is the leading theory to the cause of Billy Mays’ death.

William “Billy” D. Mays, Jr. was born in 1958. He made name for himself as a television direct-response advertisement salesperson most notable for promoting OxiClean, Orange Glo, and other cleaning, home-based, and maintenance products.

Most recently Billy Mays featured in an infomerical documentary for the Discovery Channel that began airing in April called Pitchmen. Billy Mays appeared on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian just last Tuesday, June 23.

Wenger refuses to rule out switch to Real Madrid

London, May 18 (ANI): Arsenal’s coach Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out a summer switch to Spanish football giant Real Madrid.

The Gunners’ long-serving boss was coy when asked on French TV whether he had spoken to Madrid presidential candidate Florentino Perez.

Far from denying it, Wenger just said: “Please allow me to remain discreet on this matter.”

Perez is the overwhelming favourite to win next month’s presidential election at the Bernabeu.

“With Perez, the project will be greatly interesting for all the managers,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

Frenchman Wenger took over at Arsenal in September 1996 and has never walked out on a club before the end of his contract.

But this time, he would only say: “In general, I always go to the end of my contract.”

The report also claimed Wenger held a meeting with Perez in a hotel in Paris last Tuesday. But after the goalless draw with Manchester United on Saturday, Wenger insisted he was looking forward to challenging the Red Devils for the title next season.

Wenger has already told United boss Alex Ferguson: “We’ll be fighting you for the title next season.” (ANI)

Venezuelan opposition leader seeking asylum

Caracas, April 21 (EFE) Venezuelan opposition leader Manuel Rosales, who has gone into hiding last month after a corruption case against him was resurrected, is seeking asylum in a friendly nation, his party said Monday.

A team from the UNT party ‘is working with a friendly country’ to arrange political asylum for Rosales, UNT chairman Omar Barboza said, without disclosing the name of nation they are in talk with.

Rosales, who founded the UNT party and ran against Hugo Chavez in the 2006 presidential election, will address Venezuelans within 48 hours on the matter, Barboza added.

The opposition leader’s allies say he is hiding as he doubts that he cannot get a fair trial in the case, which dates back to Sep 13, 2004, when Chavez ally Jose Pirela filed a criminal complaint against Rosales alleging graft. Rosales was the then-governor of the oil-rich state of Zulia.

Rosales was due to appear in a court Monday to explain what he says are politically motivated corruption charges.

The case has sparked criticism that the leftist Chavez, who last year vowed to jail Rosales, is using the legal system to carry out witch-hunts against opposition leaders who won key posts in November’s elections for governors and mayors.

In an open letter he released last Tuesday from hiding, Rosales said that, along with the ‘democratic forces … we will intelligently confront the hunt and the lynching that Chavez has ordered against me.’

IAEA chief calls for dialogue on North Korea nuclear issue

Beijing, April 20 (Xinhua) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei Monday called for dialogue to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

‘The only way to resolve the issues is through dialogue,’ ElBaradei told reporters at a conference on nuclear energy in Beijing. ‘There is no other solution apart from dialogue.’

He said dialogue should be conducted through the United Nations Security Council to resolve such issues in Iran, North Korea and Cuba, instead of ‘flexing muscles’.

North Korea last Tuesday asked IAEA inspectors to stop work and leave the country as soon as possible, a day after the Security Council condemned the North Korea’s April 5 ‘rocket’ launch. The country claimed it was a satellite launch while US, Japan and South Korea viewed it as a front for testing ballistic missile technology.

ElBaradei said he hoped IAEA would be allowed to resume work in the country.

Hometown concert on Handel Special Day is sell-out

Halle, Germany – As 12 European cities marked “Handel Special Day” with concerts of the Anglo-German composer’s music, orchestras played funeral music Sunday in his hometown, the eastern German city of Halle.

“The concert in our Market Church was a sell-out,” said Bianca Berger, spokeswoman for the Handel birthplace trust in Halle.

Handel (1685-1759) was born in Germany and baptized in the church. He later became a British citizen. The concerts were organized to mark the 250th anniversary last Tuesday of his death in London.

The various concerts around Europe were broadcast by 40 radio stations.

The Halle concert required multiple orchestras to play the music staged at a 1784 memorial service for the great composer in Westminster Abbey, London. dpa

Pleasure cruise ends in tragedy for Indian couple

George Town (Penang), April 15 (IANS) An Indian couple’s pleasure cruise ended in tragedy when the man fell off the ship and his wife dived into the choppy sea in a failed rescue attempt.

Kasturi Shetty, 47, dived off the Star Cruise Virgo Monday to save her husband Noojady Nithyanand, 49, after the latter slipped on the deck and fell into the sea.

‘She is a good swimmer, but her husband is not. That is why she risked her life to save him,’ said Pranhakar Shetty, the husband’s cousin, who was also on the cruise.

Kasturi is still recovering from the trauma.

Her gutsy attempt proved futile as she was swept away from her husband by the undercurrent, New Straits Times reported from the capital of Penang.

Pranhakar said he and the couple left Bangalore last Tuesday for the cruise which set sail from Singapore.

The incident happened at 10.30 a.m. as the ship was headed towards Pulau Kendi.

Noojady lost his footing as he and his wife were strolling on the slippery deck, according to sources.

The husband’s body is yet to be found, the newspaper said.

Alex Ferguson warns Cristiano Ronaldo about his attitude

London – Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his star striker Cristiano Ronaldo about his attitude, according to media reports on Sunday. The Portuguese winger, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer, has cut an increasingly frustrated figure this season and has been guilty of a number of acts of petulance.

His form has also suffered, and although he scored twice in the 3- 2 win over Aston Villa last week, it was his mistake that gifted Porto their opener in the 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Champions League last Tuesday.

That, clearly, is a concern for Ferguson.

“I don’t accept that he will give goals away because of the player he is, I speak to him about it,” he said. “I don’t accept that from anyone.”

“He always feels he’s not getting the proper protection from referees and I think that, maybe, in quite a few cases he is right, and a few cases he is not right,” Ferguson said. “It’s hard when a player who wants to entertain doesn’t get everything his own way. But you can’t get everything your own way.”

Ferguson said the Portuguese winger “understands that and there’s not a problem with that. It’s just a frustration that he feels he doesn’t get the decision and he gets upset about it. I think, obviously, he doesn’t enjoy that and he knows he’s letting himself down more than anything.”
