Meet Britain”s unluckiest motorist

London, April 24 (ANI): A British man has claimed that he is Britain”s unluckiest motorist after going through five car crashes, three hit-and-runs and also being struck by a bus while cycling.

John Child, 45, a mechanical design engineer from Milton Keynes, Bucks, who has even been mowed down on a zebra crossing, is scared to leave his home.

He revealed he has been in ten accidents in the last ten years, and in every case he has had to fight to clear his name after being accused of being at fault.

Child has suffered from whiplash, severe bruising all over his body and even a torn shoulder ligament, and he has also had to fork out for more than 4,500 pounds for repairs to his cars and bike.

“I”ve seen my doctors so many times now after crashes I”ve told them I”m allergic to cars,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

And to add to his woes, the out-of-luck engineer was made redundant from his job at Jaguar in Warwickshire last year.

His catalogue of disasters began on January 24, 1999, when a woman pulled out and drove into the passenger side of his VW Golf as he drove across a roundabout.

“I have been driving since I was 18 for 28 safe years and I have never caused a collision,” he said.

“I used to cycle 25 miles in the evening after work to clear my head, but I”ve given that up now. It”s just not safe to cycle on the roads anymore.

“I still can”t work out why this keeps happening to me,” he said.

Colour-blind Child has managed to clear his name in nine out of the ten disputes but is still fighting a legal battle from an incident in March last year.

His luck may finally be changing though, as he was recently offered his old job back and will return to Jaguar later this year.

“It”s great news getting my job back. I hope this means my luck is turning,” he said.

Adding: “After everything that”s happened to me, I”m lucky to be alive.” (ANI)

China has added over 3 million hectares of new forests since 2000

Washington, March 29 (ANI): A new report indicates that in the last ten years, China has displayed an incredible feat of environmental engineering by adding over 3 million hectares of new forests, in order to combat deforestation.

According to Discovery News, a new report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations shows that deforestation decreased around the world over the last ten years, but China is miles ahead of the pack.

Since the year 2000, the country added over 3 million hectares of new forest, an area over twice the size of the American state of Connecticut.

With desertification in the western part of the country sending ever more sky-darkening sandstorms blowing into Beijing and the populated east, the government decided to enact a massive reforestation project ten years ago, and it’s been a resounding success so far.

China has a huge, impoverished rural population that is not in a position to care much about how conservation or land use with an eye toward the future.

These are people struggling to feed themselves, and the nation’s track record of being hard on the land reflects that.

But it appears their powerful central government is turning things around for them. (ANI)

Clarke’s best yet to come, says Ponting

Hamilton, Mar 27(ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting reckons that vice-captain Michael Clarke’s best is yet to come, as there is room for him to keep improving.

Ponting’s remark came after Clarke leapt four places in the ICC’s batting rankings to No.2 spot after scoring his 14th century in Australia’s 10-wicket win over New Zealand in Wellington last week.

The 28-year-old is 17 points behind Indian batsman Virender Sehwag (863 points), and another big game would give him the chance to regain the top spot, which he previously attained during the 2009 Ashes series in England.

“We don’t know if he’s starting to peak because his consistency over the last couple of years has been great. He’s probably been our leading run-scorer and he’d probably been our most consistent player. Whether that means he’s peaked or not is a different thing,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

“There has been a lot of talk over the years about batsmen peaking in their early thirties and he’s not 30 yet, so maybe, there is room for him to keep improving,” he added.

Talking about Clarke’s performance in Wellington, where he put a messy personal life behind to score a career-best 168, Ponting said the innings was terrific.

“Let’s hope he continues to improve, as has been a trend in Australian cricket for the last ten years. Michael is heading in the same direction as that,” he added.

Clarke’s decision to quit the one-day series against the Kiwis and return home with three games remaining had attracted heavy criticism from ex-players.

He later announced that his engagement to fiancée Lara Bingle was off, and returned to Wellington to prepare for the first Test.

Despite massive media interest, the batsman was able to focus on his game and play a brilliant knock. (ANI)

China to become world’s top tourist destination by 2015

Sanya (China), Mar 22(ANI): The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, has said that China is expected to become the world’s largest tourist destination by 2015.

Rifai stressed that China’s tourism economy has moved incredibly in the last ten years, and said: “As we predict, China is going to become the world”s No. 1 tourist destination by the year 2015.”

“China is almost there. It is now the world”s fourth largest destination when it comes to incoming tourists, and the rates of growth are moving so quickly that we think this is a realistic target,” Xinhua news agency quoted Rifai, as saying.

“The number of incoming tourists rose from eight million to 48 million. The potential of the growth is still big because of the size of China,” he added.

He informed that currently France receives most international tourists; at 80 million people per year, followed by the United States and Spain, both at 60 million a year, while China has about 48 million.

Rifai further said that the global tourism industry is improving, but challenges remain due to the weak economy.

“The tourism industry has to follow and is very much affected by the general economic situation, and for sure the general economic situation has started to turn around. But we cannot call it a full recovery at the moment,” he said. (ANI)

Rowling’s mosaic made from 48,000 Lego bricks unveiled

London, May 5 (ANI): Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s mosaic has been constructed from 48,000 Lego bricks.
The giant tribute was built after the novelist came top of a poll to find the “ultimate hero” of the last ten years.

The portrait, which composed of white, yellow and grey bricks, is so tall that visitors to Legoland Windsor theme park in Berkshire had to use a ladder to add extra pieces.

Rowling lead the vote with more than a third (37.4 per cent) of responses, followed by High School Musical star Zac Efron in second place with 27.3 per cent, reports The Telegraph.

US President Barack Obama was voted the third greatest hero, receiving 11.8 per cent in the poll of 700 young people under the age of 14.

Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole and football superstar David Beckham made it into fourth and fifth place with an overall 6.7 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe was in the top 10 at number eight on the list.

Vicky Brown, general manager of Legoland Windsor, said: “We are thrilled that JK Rowling topped this poll as her books have been a great inspiration to children of all ages.

“At Legoland, we actively encourage imagination and creativity and believe in making the children the heroes – just as Rowling does in her stories.”

The top 10 heroes in the Legoland Windsor poll:

1. JK Rowling – 37.4 percent

2. Zac Efron – 27.3 percent

3. Barack Obama – 11.8 percent

4. Cheryl Cole – 6.7 percent

5. David Beckham – 4.4 percent

6. Andy Murray – 3 percent

7. Sir David Attenborough – 2 percent

8. Daniel Radcliffe – 2 percent

9. David Tennant – 1 percent

10. Joe Jonas (Jonas Brothers) – 1 percent. (ANI)

Heat wave in Kolkata

Kolkata, Apr 21 (ANI): Soaring mercury levels made life miserable for people in Kolkata as they grapple with the heat wave.he scorching heat has made life miserable for those who have no option but to work in the sun.

“I have never experienced this abnormal temperature of 41 degrees especially in middle of April. There is no possibility of rain for at least for the next few days. So it has become unbearable, but still we have to come out. We can’t avoid it,” said J. Chowdhury, a resident.

In order to beat the heat, the residents are opting for lemonades and soft drinks, which are having a brisk sale in Kolkata.

“I used to sell the drinks worth rupees 3000 and rupees 4000 daily, but due to this heat the sale of the soft drinks has increased. The sale has reached between rupees 5000 and rupees 6000,” said Radhe Shyam Kumar, a shop owner.

According to the weather officials, the weather would continue to warm for at least next two days in West Bengal.

“No respite will be there for the next 48 hours for West Bengal particularly. The main reason for this discomfort or high temperature is due to the lack of sufficient moisture in the atmosphere. The moisture that is generally available in the atmosphere has been driven away by the recent cyclone ‘Bijli’ from our state,” said G.C. Debnath, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Alipore.

The mercury has risen to 41 degree Celsius on Tuesday, which is supposed to be the highest temperature in April during the last ten years in Kolkata. (ANI)

1 in 8 Brits ‘living in fear’

London, Apr 14 (ANI): Britons are increasingly “living in fear”, a situation that is making the economic crisis worse, mental health experts have said.

According to a new report from the Mental Health Foundation, levels of anxiety are on the rise in the UK.

Infact measures aimed at tackling crime and terrorism are failing to quell fears and could be adding to them, it said.

Official figures show around 800,000 more people in the UK now suffer from anxiety disorders than in 1993, reports The Scotsman.

As per a poll of 2,246 adults for the report In the Face of Fear, 77 per cent believed the world had become more frightening in the last ten years.

More than 37 per cent felt frightened or anxious more often than they used to while 77 per cent thought people generally were more scared than they used to be, the study found.

The study said: “New research suggests that we are becoming more fearful as a nation. Our survey emphatically indicates that people perceive our world as having become more frightening and frightened.

“The government’s Psychiatric Morbidity Surveys, published in February 2009, show significant increases in anxiety disorders from 1993 to 2007. The Mental Health Foundation believes these trends are linked.

“The more fearful people feel in the general population, the more people will be tipped over into diagnosable anxiety disorders.”

The Mental Health Foundation said that fear was partly driving the economic crisis, because emotion overrides logical thinking.

“Individuals and institutions – keen to protect themselves – are now too afraid to lend, spend and invest, despite the fact that these actions could assist in ending the recession,” it said. (ANI)

40pct Brits believe in ghosts

London, April 13 (ANI): If a new study is anything to go by, 40 percent Britons believe in ghosts and over 50 percent in life after death.

The survey of more than 2,000 people has shown that seven out of ten people believe in the human soul and more than five out of ten believe in heaven.

ComRes, the company that conducted the research for Theos, found that one in five believes in astrology or horoscopes, one in ten in Tarot or fortune telling and nearly three in ten people believe in reincarnation.
According to the results, people are more superstitious than 60 years ago, at a time when orthodox religious belief is declining and secularism is on the rise.

“The enlightenment optimism in the ability of science and reason to explain everything ended decades ago. The extent of belief will probably surprise people, but the finding is consistent with other research we have undertaken,” Times Online quoted Paul Woolley, the director of Theos, as saying.

“The results indicate that people have a very diverse and unorthodox set of beliefs. Our research may point to a slight increase in scepticism about aspects of the supernatural over the last ten years,” he added. (ANI)

“IBM positioned to lead” says Chairman Palmisano in letter to stockholders

With the IBM – International Business Machines Corp. – stock having done better than the company’s large-capital technology contemporaries,

Chairman and CEO Samuel J. Palmisano, in a letter to the stockholders, expressed optimism that IBM is “positioned to lead in the era that lies on the other side of the present crisis.”

Saying that IBM is confident of thriving despite the economic downturn, as the company plans to develop money-saving computer services, and spread out further, by the way of the so-called ‘cloud computing’ concept of delivering software, data and computing power over the Internet.

IBM’s fourth-quarter profit and 2009 forecast surpassed the estimates of the analysts, largely due to the endeavors of Palmisano who, ever since he took over the IBM reins as the CEO seven years back, has shifted jobs overseas and focused on more profitable businesses.

Stressing IBM’s exposure in the global arena, the recession notwithstanding, Palmisano remarked in the letter: “We will not simply ride out the storm. Rather we will take a long-term view, and go on offense… We entered this turbulent period strong, and we expect to exit it stronger.”

Undoubtedly, IBM has broadened its horizons lucratively over the last ten years, emerging from its ancestry as a hardware maker; and has gone on to become the biggest IT services business – vending high end software to corporations and governments worldwide!

In UK, cocaine now cheaper than lager and wine

London, Feb.13 (ANI): A line of cocaine is now cheaper than a pint of lager or a glass of wine, official figures in Britain have disclosed.

According to DrugScope, a charity that provides research and advice on drugs policy, gram of cocaine can make between 10 and 20 lines for snorting, depending on its strength.

That means a line of cocaine can cost as little as a pound, with an average price per line of between two and four pounds. The average price of a pint of lager is around 2.75 pounds, although some pub chains have reacted to the credit crunch by cutting the price of a pint as low as 99 pence. A glass of wine typically costs 3.50 pounds.

According to The Telegraph, the Home Office has admitted that the street price of both cocaine and heroin has fallen by nearly half in the last ten years, making the most dangerous illegal drugs cheaper than they have ever been.

Based on reports from police forces, the Home Office said that cocaine is now being sold for as little as 20 pounds a gram in some parts of the country.

The most common price for the drug is 40 pounds per gram. Home Office figures for 1998 show the average price was 77 pounds.

A gram of heroin can now be bought for as little as 25 pounds, with the average price somewhere between £40 and £50 per gram. In 1998, the average was 74 pounds.

The Home Office figures are based on data collected from police forces and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.

The figures were uncovered by the Tories, who said they proved that Labour had failed to stem the flow of Class A drugs into the UK. (ANI)
