Harrah’s says sees Macau allowing more gaming entrants

June 8 (Reuters) – Harrah’s Entertainment Inc [HAMLEH.UL], the world’s largest casino operator by revenue, said on Tuesday that it believes Macau could allow new entrants to its local gambling market.

Stocks | Global Markets | Cyclical Consumer Goods

Harrah’s, which was bought by private-equity firms TPG Capital LP [TPG.UL] and Apollo Management LP [APOLO.UL] in a 2008 $31 billion leveraged buyout, operates more than 50 casinos in six countries, including Las Vegas resorts Caesars Palace and Paris.

It is also the only major U.S. casino operator without a license to operate in Macau, a tightly controlled market that has surpassed the Las Vegas Strip to become the world’s biggest gambling market.

Michael Chen, Harrah’s president for Asia, told Reuters he believed his company would eventually be allowed into Macau, but did not give a timeframe or say how its entrance would be accomplished. (Reporting by Sui-Lee Wee; Editing by Doug Young and Chris Lewis)

Hubby keeping Heidi Montag ‘a prisoner in her own home’

New York, May 14 (ANI): Heidi Montag’s hubby is reportedly keeping her a “prisoner” in her own home.

Reports suggest that Spencer keeps the windows of their house covered with dark cloth, the doors blocked.

It is said that Spencer invited one of his friends, a Marine, to serve as a guard.

In fact, Heidi was allowed to leave the house only three times in April.

“Once to do a paid appearance in Las Vegas and twice to accompany Spencer on research trips for a script he”s writing. He”s forcing Heidi to help with it, making her come up with ideas for the female characters,” the New York Daily News quoted a source as saying.

Meanwhile, a source has told OK! magazine that Heidi “has become Spencer”s little blonde puppet.”

“Spencer is obsessed with power, and Heidi is obsessed with herself. This gives Spencer something he wants — power over Heidi — and it gives Heidi something she wants: feeling like someone is obsessed with her. It”s really sick in many senses, but it works,” said the source. (ANI)

Las Vegas musical to celebrate Gloria Estefan’s life

London, May 4(ANI): The life of Latin pop star Gloria Estefan will be celebrated in a new autobiographical Las Vegas musical.

The show will be performed at the Tropicana Hotel-Casino in the Nevada gaming mecca. However, it will not feature performances of her biggest hits like Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, Turn The Beat Around and Anything For You by the singer herself, reports Sky News.

It will replace the famed showgirl revue Folies Bergere, a variety show that ended a 49-year run in 2008.

The 52-year-old Cuban-born singer hinted that she was planning “something big in Vegas” while accepting a star on the famous Walk of Stars.

Out of a career that bagged seven Grammy Awards and shifted more than 90 million albums worldwide, Estefan considers this project as “one of the most exciting things” to happen in her life.

Legendary Vegas show producer Bernie Yuman, best known for the Siegfried & Roy show, will produce the show. (ANI)

Brit Muslim boxer to take on Mayweather, Pacquiao in a year’s time

London, May 4 (ANI): WBA World light welterweight champion Amir Khan has said that he will be ready to take on American legend Floyd Mayweather Junior and Philippine Manny Pacquiao in a year’s time.

Khan, who defends his title against Paulie Malignaggi in New York on May 15, said it is only a matter of fine tuning his skills before he can take on the world’s top two fighters.

The British boxer is willing to move up a division to fight undefeated Mayweather, who cruised to a unanimous points verdict over Sugar Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on Saturday night, The Sun reports.

“In 12 months from now, I will be ready for Manny and Floyd Mayweather Junior,” Khan said.

Mayweather and Pacquiao were due to fight this year before rows over drug testing got in the way.

But Khan has no doubt the money-spinning bout will go ahead. “I know them both well and they both want to fight,” he said.

“It’s the promoters trying to sort out all the details that are holding it up. Who would win? That’s a tough one but I’d say Manny. He’s more aggressive and I think he’d take Mayweather into an uncomfortable zone where he hasn”t been for a very long time,” Khan said.

“Floyd likes to control a fight but so does Manny and he has a higher work rate. If things go well, I could end up fighting the winner. This game’s all about timing. You have to know the best time to have these big fights. I want to catch these guys when they have come off their peak,” he added. (ANI)

Marquez and Diaz in “2009 fight of the year” rematch

Five-times world champion Juan Manuel Marquez will defend his WBA and WBO lightweight titles against Juan Diaz in Las Vegas on July 31 in a rematch of their furious slugfest last year.

Mexican Marquez stopped Diaz in the ninth round in Houston in February 2009 to claim the vacant WBA and WBO belts.

Diaz dominated the early rounds before Marquez turned the tide, swarming after his opponent in the eighth and ninth until the referee halted the contest.

“Our fight was the fight of the year in 2009 and it may be the fight of the year again in 2010,” Marquez (50-5-1, 37 knockouts) told a news conference at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino on Saturday.

“A lot of people are asking me why Juan Diaz again? Number one, he is a great fighter and deserves a rematch. Number two, the people deserve a great fight like this.”

Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs) viewed his sequel with Marquez as a chance for redemption.

“It’s no secret my loss to Marquez is the one I want to get back the most,” he said.

“I was dominating the first fight but I didn’t finish (it off). This time that won’t be the case.”

Marquez, widely regarded as the world’s top lightweight, has not been in the ring since he lost a non-title welterweight bout to Floyd Mayweather Jr in September after moving up two weight classes.

Diaz, who held the world lightweight title from 2004 to 2007, has lost three of his last five fights.

The July rematch will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Holyfield stops Botha in eighth round

Evander Holyfield has stopped Frans Botha in the eighth round a battle of aging heavyweight warriors in Las Vegas.

The 47-year-old Holyfield improved to 43-10-2 with 28 wins inside the distance.

He knocked down 41-year old with 2:36 remaining in the round with a right to the chin.

Botha beat referee Russell Mora’s count, but as Holyfield backed him into a corner with 2:05 remaining Mora stopped the fight.

Botha, who fell to 47-5-3, was ahead on two judges’ cards 67-66 when the fight was stopped. The third judge had it 69-64 for Holyfield.

Most of the crowd of about 2,200 people at the Thomas and Mack Center were backing Holyfield, who briefly lost his balance and stumbled into a corner after a right from Botha in the second round.

From there, Holyfield began to take charge and Botha was warned twice in the first three rounds for hitting behind the head.

Botha was also warned in the first round for two blows to the head during a clinch.

The fight was Holyfield’s first in Las Vegas since 2003, when he lost to James Toney at Mandalay Bay.

Botha and Holyfield had originally been set to meet in Uganda in February, but that plan fell through when a Swedish promoter failed to come up with advance money.

Holyfield had not fought since December 2008, when he lost a WBA title-fight decision to Russian Nikolai Valuev in Zurich.
